Allen to miss start of India T20I series if Scorchers reach BBL finals

If Scorchers don’t qualify, then Allen should be available for the full series

Opener Finn Allen could miss the start of New Zealand’s upcoming five-match T20I series in India due to BBL commitments. The series, which starts on January 21 in Nagpur, serves as important preparation for the T20 World Cup to be played in India and Sri Lanka. It is the second leg of New Zealand’s white-ball tour with three ODIs slated from January 11-17.But Allen might not be available until possibly the fourth T20I on January 28 if Perth Scorchers reach the BBL final set to be played on January 25. Scorchers wrap up their regular season against Melbourne Stars on January 17 in Perth. If they don’t qualify for the finals, then Allen should be available for the full T20I series.”Pending selection, I’ll head straight to India once the Big Bash finishes up for us [Scorchers],” Allen told ESPNcricinfo.Allen, 26, is one of five players who signed casual agreements in order to have some flexibility between playing for New Zealand, remaining within the high-performance system, and taking up franchise opportunities overseas.”Playing for New Zealand is still, for me, the pinnacle and the reason why I love playing is to represent my country,” Allen said. “But cricket’s obviously evolving and changing year on year.”New Zealand Cricket’s been really good to work with over the last wee while. [I’m] confident about getting back into some Black Caps stuff after the Big Bash and hopefully can continue that.”Gearing up to partner Australia T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh at the top of the order for Scorchers, Allen will be making his return to competitive cricket after being sidelined with a foot stress fracture sustained in the MLC in early July.In the season opener of MLC, Allen had smashed 151 – featuring a T20 record of 19 sixes – in San Francisco Unicorns’ victory over Washington Freedom at the Oakland Coliseum.Allen last played international cricket in March, where he hit 27 off 12 balls in New Zealand’s eight-wicket victory over Pakistan in Wellington.

Hat-trick hero Bray wants to stay a two-sport sensation

The pace bowler continues to impress for Sydney Sixers in WBBL but isn’t ready to move on from soccer yet

AAP17-Nov-2025Sydney Sixers teen sensation Caoimhe Bray wants to play elite cricket and soccer for as long as possible, still pinching herself she is following Ellyse Perry’s path.Bray, 16, captured headlines again on Saturday night when she became the youngest player to take a hat-trick in any of the main women’s T20 leagues.Still on modified training in cricket given her age, Bray remains in junior Matildas camps and has played as a goalkeeper in the national Under-17 side.Injury restricted her involvement with soccer last winter, while Bray has prioritised the WBBL over the A-League Women competition after signing a three-year deal with Sixers. The NSW product has conceded she will likely need to choose a sport at some point, but believes there is no need to make a decision imminently.”I have to commit myself to the cricket for the summer part of the season. And when winter comes around, that’s when soccer comes back,” Bray said. “So many people are asking the question will you still be playing soccer or still be playing cricket. People have their own opinions, like ‘go into cricket, surely’.”But so much can change. I have the three years signed with the Sixers and so much can change over that period. If you don’t know the future, neither do I. I don’t know what it will be like in a few years. But I am going to try and stick to [doing both] as much as I can.”Bray’s situation is eerily similar to Perry’s, who famously played in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup for Australia while also playing international cricket. She said she was still pinching herself to be sharing a field with Perry, and doing her best not to bug the 35-year-old too much.Perhaps the most impressive thing about Bray is that her rise has come on largely modified programs. The seamer only did two days a week at NSW training in the pre-season, rather than four, and is still kept from bowling 10 overs in a 50-over game.”There were things during the Breakers pre-season I didn’t do compared to others, just because of my age,” Bray said. “It was just like there is no point for you to do it. They said: ‘you are changing so much in terms of height and body’.”You don’t want to overwork too much because that is when you break down. They are trying to look out for that.”

Latham: NZ20 a 'great initiative' and will be 'hugely beneficial' for us

New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham believes the NZ20 – the country’s first proposed T20 franchise tournament – is a “great initiative” and will be “hugely beneficial” for cricket in the nation. Even though the NZ20 idea is yet to get approval from New Zealand Cricket (NZC), plans are underway to launch the six-team competition for men in January 2027 and for women later in the same year. Once underway, it will replace the Super Smash, New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition.”I think you look at the NZ20 possibility, I think that’s a great initiative,” Latham said in Wellington a day before the second Test against West Indies. “When you look at the way that cricket’s moving around the world – I think we’re the only Test-playing nation that doesn’t have a franchise competition. But what it will bring to the country, to cricket here in New Zealand will be hugely beneficial, having international players to boost the standard of cricket. I think we’ve got a great standard of cricket here and I think the Super Smash has produced great cricketers for us up to this point. But I think being able to push the game forward here in New Zealand will only do great things for the cricket here.”The proposed tournament originated from former New Zealand players such as Stephen Fleming who then engaged with the New Zealand Players Association (NZPA] to check the feasibility of a franchise-based competition in New Zealand. The tournament model is set to be based on that of the CPL in the Caribbean and is looking to get private investment as one of the sources of funding.Related

  • Plans being developed for NZ20 league in January 2027

When asked if Latham was hopeful of the tournament getting off the ground, he said: “Certainly hopeful. I would love to see it happen and I’m sure you talk to a lot of the players that will be in the same camp. A lot of the guys have played franchise cricket around the world these days and been able to mix with overseas players that have had great international careers that don’t play international cricket now but still play in franchise cricket…To learn off the likes of those sort of guys will be hugely beneficial not only to the guys that play cricket for New Zealand but also to the younger generation coming through here in New Zealand.”You talk to a lot of guys that play franchise cricket around the world, they have a lot of fun, they learn a lot from different players and in different conditions. So as I said earlier it’s a great initiative and hopefully one that can get off the ground.”Latham himself has not featured in any T20 franchise tournament around the world but did play for Birmingham Bears in the Vitality Blast in the English summer this year, which was the off season for New Zealand. In his last game there, he smashed a 51-ball 104 against Derbyshire. However, it is during the New Zealand summer that a lot of top players from New Zealand choose to play T20 franchise cricket – such as the BBL, SA20 and ILT20 – over the Super Smash back home.”I would much rather see have our own competition here where we’re using all of our talent as best we can to boost cricket here in New Zealand,” Latham said. “And I think that’s a really good opportunity to do that.”The ILT20 and SA20 – both into their fourth season – already face a calendar clash with the BBL. The ILT20 started early this time to be played from December 2 to January 4, while the SA20 will run from December 26 to January 25 and they both will overlap with the BBL from December 14 to January 25.

Chelsea hit by more injury misery as Liam Delap forced off early against Bournemouth with suspected dislocated shoulder

Chelsea's summer signing Liam Delap looks set for more time on the sidelines after being forced out of Saturday's game against Bournemouth at the Amex Stadium with a shoulder injury. The forward landed heavily and looked to be in real pain in the first half of the game following a duel at a corner. Manager Enzo Maresca sent on Marc Guiu in his place and now faces an anxious wait to discover the severity of his injury.

  • Delap suffers suspected dislocated shoulder

Delap was back in the starting XI for Chelsea on the south coast on Saturday but lasted less than half an hour due to injury. The Chelsea striker appeared to dislocate his shoulder after a heavy fall and was replaced immediately. Delap had caught the eye in the opening exchanges against Bournemouth for his physical approach and was perhaps fortunate not to have been booked for catching Marcos Senesi with a stray arm twice before he had to be taken off.

Injuries interrupting Delap's start to life at Chelsea

Delap will be frustrated if he is forced back onto the sidelines. The summer signing has already missed a significant chunk of the campaign for the Blues after sustaining a hamstring injury back in August that kept him out of action until November. The 22-year-old has therefore only managed six starts for Chelsea in all competitions so far in the 2025-26 season, with his only goal coming as a substitute in the Champions League win over Barcelona.

  • Maresca's praise for Delap

The injury to Delap will also be frustrating for manager Enzo Maresca who was full of praise for Delap ahead of the match. "It was a long time for him to be out," he told reporters. "I think he is getting better and the other day against Leeds, he had two or three chances where he could have done better. I know Liam from many years ago at Manchester City and I don’t have any doubts that he will score goals and be important for us.’

    What comes next for Chelsea?

Delap and Chelsea must wait to discover the severity of the striker's injury and how much time he will miss. The issue comes ahead of a busy festive period for the Blues. Maresca's side take on Atalanta next in the Champions League and then host Everton at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.

'Why is he in charge?!' – Wolves in dissaray as unpopular chairman Jeff Shi admits he's 'not an expert' with club hurtling towards Premier League relegation

Wolves fans vented their anger on social media as unpopular chairman Jeff Shi made an honest admission that he's "not an expert" with the club tumbling towards Premier League relegation. However, his honesty has further poured fuel on a mounting fire at Molineux, where supporters have already been protesting against the club's direction under Fosun's ownership.

Wolves get off to worst start in decades

Rob Edwards’ side sit rock bottom of the Premier League with just two points from 15 matches. Their eight-game losing streak has matched an unwanted club record dating back to the 1981-82 season, and they have not tasted victory in the top flight since April. With Wolves already 13 points adrift of safety and travelling to league leaders Arsenal next, the mood on terraces and social media has reached breaking point. Much of the frustration stems from a summer that saw the spine of the side dismantled. Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri were sold to Manchester United and Manchester City for a combined £92.5 million ($123.8m), while captain Nelson Semedo walked away on a free transfer.

In return, Wolves signed six players, Fer Lopez, Jhon Arias, Tolu Arokodare, David Moller Wolfe, Jackson Tchatchoua and Ladislav Krejci, none of whom had kicked a ball in the Premier League before. The only arrival with prior experience at the club was Jorgen Strand Larsen, whose loan move was made permanent for £23m ($30.8m). The Norwegian forward, however, has scored just once in the league this season after netting 14 times last term.

AdvertisementShi admits his mistakes

Shi acknowledged the scale of the upheaval, admitting to the : "I am not an expert. Maybe we sold too many players in one window. You can see the squad and compare it to last season, maybe we changed 40 or 50% of the key players. It's a task to rebuild a team but the Premier League is very tough. If you can't control the tempo and need a longer time to rebuild the team the games will punish you."

Protests gathered momentum on Monday night as several supporters’ groups organised a boycott of the opening 15 minutes of the 4-1 home defeat to Manchester United. Their message was clear: that Fosun’s stewardship has steered Wolves into a state of "managed decline". The dismantling of the team that achieved continental highs continues to haunt supporters. Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota, Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore and Pedro Neto have all departed without adequate replacements.

Shi, who has long been targeted by fan frustration, said: "It's a very natural feeling from the fans. Five or six years ago we were at some heights, the semi-final of the FA Cup and quarter-final in Europe. When you have reached those heights fans don't want to let it go. I feel it myself. When you lose something like that it's a tough blow – for this I have empathy. I'm not only a fan, I'm the CEO and chairman in the club. I have to think about how to judge the last decade in a more factual way and think about the next 10 years."

What did the fans say?

Shi's comments did little to appease fans, many of whom responded online with disbelief that the club’s top executive would admit to lacking expertise while Wolves spiral toward the Championship.

@kylecoyle_ asked: "If he’s not an expert, WHY IS HE IN CHARGE?!"

@LTCwolf wrote: "Genuinely unbelievable that this man is in charge of a Premier League football club. Completely disconnected with the reality around him. #wwfc"

@adamgj03 lashed out: "He loves playing the “I don’t know football” card but he’s been doing the job for the best part of a decade and getting paid handsomely for it, that excuse just doesn’t wash now."

@phibel69 wrote: "Jeff shi and Jackson have just confirmed why wolves are rock bottom. It's a bloody car crash every time they're interviewed."

And like many fans, @BennettDar89036 too wants Shi to be thrown out: "Get this delusional guy and Fosun out of our club. That interview was simply bizarre."

Getty ImagesEdwards backed despite dire results

Edwards, appointed in November as Wolves’ fifth permanent manager in four years, has lost all four of his matches in charge since joining from Middlesbrough. Yet Shi insists the club remains committed to a long-term project under the former defender, who played 111 times for Wolves and later coached their youth sides.

When asked if Edwards will keep his job, Shi insisted: "No-one can guarantee 100%, but I can say 95% [for] at least two or three years. It's a long-term project with Rob."

Wolves face league leaders Arsenal next at the Emirates, and barring a miraculous turnaround in form, the bottom-placed side should prepare themselves for a rough evening in north London.

Mookie Betts Had Saddest Line About His Struggles in World Series After Game 5 Loss

The Dodgers are now one loss away from losing the World Series after falling to the Blue Jays, 6-1, in Game 5 on Wednesday night. The series now shifts back to Toronto for Game 6 on Friday night where the Blue Jays will have a great chance to win their first title since 1993.

The Dodgers' bats have gone cold at the worst possible time as they were only able to score a combined three runs in Games 4 and 5. While Shohei Ohtani has carried this team on his back, Mookie Betts, an eight-time All-Star and former AL MVP, has been lost at the plate against the Blue Jays as he has just three hits in 23 at-bats with no RBIs.

After Game 5, in which he went 0-for-4, Betts had a brutally honest take on his struggles thus far.

"I don’t want to speak on anybody else but for me personally I’ve just been terrible," Betts said. "I’ve been terrible and I wish it was from lack of effort, I really do, but it’s not so I don’t have any answers."

David Ortiz, who was teammates with Betts for a few years in Boston, spoke about those comments on Fox's post-game show.

"He hurts. He hurts," Ortiz said. "I know Mookie very well. It hurts to see him answering the question that way because to me he still is one of the best players in the game but it seems like his confidence level is pretty low right now. And of course, I don’t blame him—when you don’t see results, Kevin, you start questioning yourself. When you have already shown superstar status everybody starts questioning you when things are not going well."

Ortiz then offered some simple advice for Betts.

"Now if I’m Mookie, I would put that all behind," he said. "You remember when we used to prepare for to go to play a Little League game? You wasn’t thinking about a scouting report, you wasn’t thinking about what people say, you wasn’t thinking about what I did yesterday. When you played in Little League all you wanted to do was see the ball and try to hit it and have fun. At the end of the day that’s what the game is all about, having fun."

Derek Jeter also weighed in Betts' comments.

"I appreciate what he said because it’s the truth," Jeter said. "We’ve all been there. We’ve all sat there in front of our locker and said that we’ve been terrible. The best thing about the postseason is who cares what has happened up to a particular point? He’s going to be up In Game 6 with an opportunity to do something special and if he does something special no one will talk about his postseason prior too, that’s the way you have to look at it."

Here's that complete conversation:

Betts has a day off before Game 6. It will be interesting to see how he responds because the Dodgers will need him to step up if they want to keep their championship hopes alive.

Aaron Boone Explains What Led to Yankees, DJ LeMahieu Split

The New York Yankees stunningly designated veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu for assignment Wednesday, putting an abrupt end to his tenure with the organization just days after the team announced plans to demote him to a bench role.

Aaron Boone spoke to reporters after the news broke of LeMahieu's release, and he offered an explanation as to how things unraveled to the point where the 36-year-old was DFA'd.

"It's been a tough couple days. Some hard conversations and then ultimately coming to this conclusion (to DFA LeMahieu) for what's been a great player and who has done a lot of great things for this organization. Difficult, but in the end (we) feel like this is the right thing to do at this time," Boone said.

Boone clarified that although LeMahieu did not take the news of his demotion too well, he did not ask to be released by the team. He added that he, LeMahieu and GM Brian Cashman had all had "respectful" conversations about the situation.

LeMahieu had been playing second base for the Yankees since returning from injury in May, but the organization opted to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to the position, leaving LeMahieu as the odd man out. Boone said that playing third base was something the veteran was open to but it proved to be too physically demanding.

It was a rather unceremonious end to LeMahieu's time in New York, especially considering how important he was to the team in the early 2020s.

Red Sox Fan Made the Most Casual Barehanded Grab on Home Run Ball

The Boston Red Sox stayed hot Tuesday night, beating the Colorado Rockies, 10–2, at Fenway Park for their fifth straight win.

The good vibes weren't only on the field for the Red Sox, but also in the stands above the legendary Green Monster where one fan made one of the coolest, and most casual, catches of the 2025 season.

Trevor Story's 15th home run of the year was a three-run shot that gave the Red Sox a commanding 9–0 lead. It also gave a fan wearing one of the team's jerseys a moment he'll never forget.

Check this out:

Here's the full home run:

He made that look way too easy. What a night at Fenway for that fella.
