Jess Jonassen, the Australia Women left-arm spinner, is set to undergo surgery on her left knee later this month. Jonassen had been “managing” an ongoing injury through the 2015-16 season, the team’s physiotherapist Kate Mahoney said, and the surgery has been scheduled for the off season.”Jess is managing an ongoing left-knee injury, which she has been managing this season,” Mahoney said. “She was reviewed by an orthopaedic surgeon after returning from the [team’s] commitments at the Women’s World T20 in India, and will require arthroscopy surgery later this month.”Her rehabilitation and return to play will be more clear after the procedure, but we are hopeful that she will recover in time for the tour of Sri Lanka later this year.”Jonassen, 23, has turned out in 31 ODIs and 46 T20Is for Australia Women, taking 43 wickets at 21.23 and 33 wickets 22.27 in the two formats respectively. She has also played the one Test match, against England Women in 215. In the just-concluded Women’s World T20, where Australia Women finished runners-up, she had picked up just the one wicket in six games.

Another trial by spin to decide series

South Africa’s 52-run win in the first T20 has put Bangladesh in an unfamiliar situation of late – to level a series after a loss in the first game

Isam: Bangladesh will look to improve their batting

Big pictureSouth Africa’s 52-run win in the first T20 could have left Bangladesh dispirited but there has been a good vibe among the home team in recent months because they have learned how to bounce back. What will irk them, though, is that this is the first time since November that they have lost the first game of a series. It was South Africa’s T20 captain Faf du Plessis who ensured victory after the visitors had a sluggish start. Rilee Rossouw also contributed at an important stage, adding an unbeaten 58 for the fifth wicket with du Plessis, who did not throw his wicket away despite occasionally struggling to time the ball.Bangladesh were hasty in their chase and Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan need to execute proper shots in the next game. They were first hustled by South Africa’s pace attack and later strangled by Aaron Phangiso and JP Duminy. The visitors will want more of the same in the second T20, in particular the verve shown by youngster Kagiso Rabada.Bangladesh will also hope their bowling attack can once again contain South Africa, and that their batsmen can find the right blend of discipline and aggression.Form guideBangladesh LWLLL
South Africa WWLLLPlayers to watchLeft-arm spinner Arafat Sunny took the wickets of AB de Villiers and JP Duminy but did not finish his full quota of four overs. He had figures of 3-0-19-2 and will be expected to be accurate once again.Despite the hot and humid weather, South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada bowled with a lot of energy and generated more bounce than anyone else on this pitch.Teams newsLegspinner Jubair Hossain, who was one of two players to go to training on Monday, could replace Sohag Gazi who went wicketless in his two overs.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Sabbir Rahman, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Litton Das, 8 Sohag Gazi/Jubair Hossain, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 10 Arafat Sunny, 11 Mustafizur RahmanThe visitors had left out Beuran Hendricks, Chris Morris and Eddie Leie for the first T20 and it is likely they will remain benched, unless South Africa have plans to hand the young legspinner Leie a T20 debut.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 AB de Villiers, 3 Faf du Plessis (capt), 4 JP Duminy, 5 David Miller, 6 Rilee Rossouw, 7 David Wiese, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Kyle Abbott, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Aaron PhangisoPitch and conditionsThe pitch for the first game was slow and had inconsistent bounce. The surface for the second T20 may have higher bounce and aid batting a little more.Stats and trivia Shakib Al Hasan is now Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, after he overtook Abdur Razzak’s 44 wickets. Having been bowled out for 78 in their 2011 World Cup game, Bangladesh have been dismissed for less than 100 by South Africa in two consecutive matches. AB de Villiers opened in the first match, only the second time he has done so for South Africa in T20s

Sarfaraz and Suryakumar's withheld Ranji fees

The Mumbai Cricket Association has decided to withhold the match fees of Sarfaraz Khan and Suryakumar Yadav as a punishment for their on and off-field indiscipline

Amol Karhadkar30-Apr-2015Suryakumar Yadav and Sarfaraz Khan have made the headlines in the past few weeks with a couple of valuable knocks, laced with aggressive and unorthodox strokeplay during the Indian Premier League. If you believe the administration of their Ranji team, Mumbai, they show as little deference to authority as they do to conventional batsmanship. So both men’s match fees have been held as insurance. “The MCA managing committee has decided to withhold Sarfaraz and Surya’s match fees for the next two years as an assurance for their good behaviour,” Ravi Sawant, MCA vice-president, said.Technically, an association can only block a part of a cricketer’s match fees. Domestic players are paid Rs 10000 per match day by their respective states at the end of the season and the remaining dues are settled by the BCCI based on profits gained. The amount paid by the host association is then reimbursed by the BCCI, so with the MCA withholding players’ dues, it cannot seek the money from the Board till the players are paid. But MCA officials said they were compelled to take the decision to stress the importance of discipline among the younger generation.Suryakumar has been appointed vice-captain of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, while Sarfaraz nearly became the youngest player to score a fifty in IPL history last night against Rajasthan Royals. However, multiple indiscretions – on and off the field – had initially left Sarfaraz and Suryakumar out of Mumbai’s list of probables for the domestic Twenty20 tournament. The duo were considered for selection only after they tendered an unconditional apology to the MCA disciplinary committee.Suryakumar, who led Mumbai for the first six Ranji Trophy matches, used abusive language towards MCA office bearers in a taped telephonic conversation with a team-mate. He had also complained against his team-mates to the match referee, and had in turn had been the subject of one from his team-mates for using abusive language in the dressing room and on the field.Sarfaraz was dropped from the Ranji squad and later found himself in controversy when he made offensive gestures at the selectors after after leading Mumbai to a victory in the Under-19 championship semi-final.

South Africa retain winning Test squad for Zimbabwe

South Africa have retained their victorious Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare starting August 9

Hashim Amla (capt), AB de Villiers (vice-capt), Kyle Abbott, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Dale Steyn, Stiaan van Zyl

South Africa have retained their victorious Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare starting August 9. South Africa regained their No.1 Test ranking after three months when they beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in the two-Test series that concluded on Monday. It was Hashim Amla’s first Test series as full-time captain, following the retirement of Graeme Smith. South Africa will play a three-match bilateral ODI series with Zimbabwe following the Test and stay back for a tri-series, also involving Australia.”The Proteas have earned a vote of confidence,” said Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson. “We will be naming the ODI squad for the three-match series against Zimbabwe next week and will give consideration to resting a couple of players.”We will, however, be sending our full-strength ODI squad for the following triangular series against Zimbabwe and Australia.”South Africa last played a Test series in Zimbabwe back in 2001.

'Follow England's lead on anti-corruption'

Cricket boards around the world would do well to emulate the example of the English game in the fight against corruption, according to Angus Porter, the head of the players’ union in England. While recent revelations relating to Lou Vincent might have painted an unflattering picture of the extent of corruption in county cricket, Porter, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, remains confident that methods used to combat the issue in England should be used as a template in the rest of the world.”The Vincent revelations are largely historical,” Porter told ESPNcricinfo. “They may only have come into the public domain in the last few days, but the ECB and PCA had known about them for some time.”While they are a reminder that there is no room for complacency in the battle against corruption, we wouldn’t want people to use them to express outdated concerns about the English game. Much has been achieved in the last few years and the recent news relates largely to a period before many preventative measures had come into place.”There are, in Porter’s estimation, six elements to the fight against corruption. Crucially, given recent suggestions about the restructuring of the Anti-Corruption Unit, they require an independent investigative and disciplinary body, as well as national player associations and the full co-operation of the national cricket boards. That is not an environment offered in India and Pakistan, for example, who do not recognise player associations.Porter’s six-point plan:1) Unity with independence
“It is incredibly important that all stake-holders act together,” Porter says. “So in England we have seen the ECB and PCA work together to find the best way to educate those involved, but also investigate and act where necessary.” But at the same time it is, he says, “essential that the independence of the investigative, reporting and disciplinary processes is maintained.” So while the ECB may fund the ACU’s work, they should not limit, interfere or attempt to influence in its work. And, as Porter points out “we need to be certain that it must not just be independent, it must be perceived as independent.”2) A distinction between the educational and investigative
In England and Wales, the PCA take on the role of educating players about the dangers of corruption and what to do should they be approached. They are not directly involved in the investigative or disciplinary aspects. “This is a particular challenge in those countries that do not have a players’ association to help with the education function,” Porter says. “It is very hard to go from the classroom with a player to then investigating them.”3) Start young
The prevention process now starts long before players sign professional terms with a first-class county. Anti-corruption education is given to academy players and ingrained in them as they develop through the system. Ignorance cannot be an excuse.4) An amnesty
In 2012, an amnesty was declared in England in which players could report historic information. While little of significance came to light during that process, it did provide a last opportunity for those who might have been guilty to come clean and offered them no excuses should information come to light at a later date. “Other countries should follow the lead of the game in England and Wales and declare an amnesty,” Porter says. “While our amnesty did not reveal a huge amount of new information, it did clear the conscience of a few people and made it very clear that a line had been drawn. There could be no excuse if anything came to light after that date.”5) Tie-in education with registration of players
It has become mandatory for players to have completed their anti-corruption training before they can be registered to play for a county. “Players cannot take the field of play until they have done so,” Porter explains. At times, with some overseas signings, this has only happened a couple of hours before a game, but there have been no exceptions. Not only does the process ensure that the players have been educated, it ensures they cannot use a defence of ignorance should they have been found to have engaged in corrupt practices.”Cricket in England is, we believe, the only sport in the world that has hard-wired education into registration in this way,” Porter says. “Again, I believe other countries would do well to follow this example.”6) Allow the prevention and investigation methods to be intelligence based
Over recent days, England players Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara have made comments in the media suggesting that preventative measures taken in county cricket were not as robust as those taken in international cricket. Notably, both called for the ban on communication devices – mobile phones and the like – in international cricket to be replicated in the domestic game. But, says, Porter that may not address the real issue.”While we are delighted to see the obvious desire of the England players to see that everything possible should be done to combat corruption, it is important we think these things through,” he says. “It may be that there is a place to restrict the use of communication devices in televised games, but while members of the public are still able to access dressing rooms during those games, it would seem to be pointless to introduce such a ban without taking other measures first.”The danger is that such action will give people a warm feeling of contentment that they are doing the right thing, but that it will actually be no use at all. The evidence we have is that fixing usually takes place away from the ground and not on match days.”Porter also points out that most players involved in the England squads were not party to the pre-season anti-corruption programmes at the counties and might not be fully aware of the extent of the help now offered at domestic level.”I think James Anderson was the only England player available for the pre-season education,” Porter explained. “But the England team’s anti-corruption runs parallel to the county teams’ so no-one slips through the net. Anderson would have seen Mervyn Westfield give some incredibly powerful testimony on the mistakes he made.”Confidence in the integrity of the game is paramount. We have achieved a great deal in the last few years and, while recent news reminds us that there is no room for complacency, it would be wrong for people to judge the integrity of the English game on historic cases.”

Bangladesh not repaying faith of adoring fans – Kumble

Former India captain Anil Kumble believes that Bangladesh have not done justice to the level of support they receive at home

Former India captain Anil Kumble believes that Bangladesh have not done justice to the level of support they receive at home. The World Twenty20 hosts lost to two Associate nations this month, first to Afghanistan in the Asia Cup and then to Hong Kong in the first round of the World T20 last weekend. On Tuesday, they begin their Super 10s campaign with a game against defending champions West Indies.”They’ve played at the highest level for a good number of years but the worrying thing for me is they have yet to arrive as a top-class international team,” Kumble wrote in his column. “It is bewildering when you consider the immense passion for the game in the country. The game is played at a reasonable level throughout the country but the national team is still to repay the faith of its adoring public.”Having played nine international matches in Bangladesh between 1998 and 2007, Kumble has seen the home side’s wide following first-hand. He believes that if Bangladesh were to beat West Indies, despite West Indies’ own shaky form, it would be considered a shock result. “They are in their own backyard with the conditions more than suited to their players. Yet there is that unfortunate feeling one gets that should the Windies stumble, it would be seen more as an upset win for the hosts rather than a victory which shouldn’t raise any eyebrows,” he said.Kumble compared the team to Sri Lanka in their early days, but said Bangladesh are still to arrive as a major force.Recently, Bangladesh whitewashed New Zealand in a home ODI series for the second time in three years, while also beating West Indies in ODIs in 2012. They have defeated each Test-playing nation at least once in ODIs, though they haven’t beaten Pakistan since 1999. In Test cricket, Bangladesh recently drew a series against New Zealand and a Test against Sri Lanka. But since that draw in Chittagong in early February, they lost two T20s and seven ODIs in a row, before beating Afghanistan and Nepal in the World T20’s opening round. Then, they lost to Hong Kong.”They [Bangladesh] have scored some good wins in the ODI version but not consistently enough to be taken seriously for a big team,” Kumble said. “With a tournament of this stature having arrived at their doorstep, it’s a fantastic opportunity for Bangladesh to make people look at them in a different light.”
