Man Utd transfer update on Trippier

Many Manchester United fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Kieran Trippier.

As per The Daily Telegraph, the Atletico Madrid right-back is desperate for a return to the Premier League in the summer window and is waiting to see if the Old Trafford faithful make a new bid for him.

Two other clubs in the top flight have shown an interest in signing Trippier, but his preference is to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

The England international would be an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka in an attacking sense, having made more assists and averaged more key passes (1.2), crosses (1.2) and long balls (2.4) per game in their respective domestic leagues during the 2020/21 season (Whoscored).

Trippier already knows English football well too having played for both Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur previously, and at 28, he is of a good age to make one final big move in his footballing career.

Basin upgrade promised while NZC take more control of venues

A short-term agreement to improve facilities at the Basin Reserve will see Test cricket retained at the ground this coming summer, with a longer term undertaking made by Wellington Stadium officials for a more substantial upgrade having been accepted by New Zealand Cricket. The grand old lady of the New Zealand cricket scene was the subject of much criticism in both the Test matches played at the ground last summer, the Boxing Day match against Bangladesh and the late-March match against England. The latter was especially embarrassing given the pathetic state of the ground’s scoreboard, the continuing woeful state of the ground covers and the inadequate facilities around the ground. However, there will be no Boxing Day Test this summer. The Test will be played two weeks before Christmas in order to meet Indian requests to be back home by January 16, and to fit in with the best pre-tournament World Cup schedule for New Zealand. The change was not a precedent for future summers, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Martin Snedden told CricInfo today.Problems at the Basin Reserve have resulted in a complete change of NZC’s match management plans and its relationship with ground authorities.”Last season we became a lot more active in directing the ground authorities on the types of wickets we wanted at grounds.”We want them hard, bouncy and as fast as reasonably possible in New Zealand conditions,” he said.Hamilton, Carisbrook and Napier had been consistently solid in this regard in recent times while the drop-in pitch at Jade Stadium in Christchurch was a big step forward. It had been too green to start with but by the fourth day of the game it “an absolute beauty”, Snedden said.”Eden Park went some way towards doing what we wanted, but the quality was not quite as good. But it was a step in the right direction,” he said.New Zealand had to have top quality pitches for a fast-paced game.Wellington ground authorities had given NZC a real commitment to try and move the Basin Reserve wicket to the next level.Soils capable of serving the ground better will be laid on the practice block to allow an assessment of which is best suited to Wellington. Once that is decided, the soil would be re-laid in the pitch block. It would be a two step process and NZC would support them in that. There would also be an upgrading of the outfield while a new system of covers would be sought to avoid the embarrassing delays that have hindered the ground in the past. The existing scoreboard, which fell into such disrepute and disrepair during the Test will be upgraded while a Clipsal electronic screen would continue to be used in conjunction with the traditional scoreboard.”I’m happy enough with how the whole situation has turned out. Over a period of time there will be a long-term improvement,” Snedden said.A new system of match management for all international grounds has also been introduced by NZC.When it was only a third party in ground usage, NZC had found problems in getting its requirements for matches met. It was difficult getting some accountability and there was no contracted relationship with ground authorities. Now, with the support of the major associations there would be a contract directly with each ground authority. And Snedden did not envisage any problems in getting the required agreement.”The relationship hasn’t changed. They will be our agents, it is the principle that is different.”If we strike problems we will have better and more direct control,” Snedden said.

Celtic: Jack Nayler leaves for RB Leipzig

Celtic’s head of sports science Jack Nayler has left for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Rodgers recruit

Nayler was brought to the club by Brendan Rodgers in November 2016.

He previously worked under Carlo Ancelotti at the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid and actually remained at Celtic Park following Rodgers’ move to Leicester City in 2019.

He has now moved on though, opting for the Bundesliga and Champions League with Die Rotten Bullen.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-7/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Leipzig move

The Scottish Sun claim that Nayler has indeed swapped Glasgow for Leipzig.

Jesse Marsch, who was linked with the vacant Celtic managerial role prior to Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, is the manager there, and he’s brought in the Hoops man as part of his backroom staff.

Celtic haven’t actually let fans know regarding Nayler’s exit, with no social media posts or statement on the club website.

The Verdict: Will Postecoglou act?

Postecoglou admitted in his first press conference as Celtic boss that he is yet to decide on his backroom staff and would make decisions as he goes.

The Scottish Sun claim that Nayler left Celtic weeks before Postecoglou arrived at Parkhead, so it’ll be interesting to see if he brings in a new man as the club’s head of sports science.

He may well be more concerned about getting his assistant managers and coaching staff in place before looking at the sports science side of things, with John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan’s futures still seemingly up in the air.

How Manchester City could look next season

Despite a superb overall campaign that saw them claim the Premier League title and win the Carabao Cup, Manchester City have been tipped for a summer rebuild ahead of next season.

After falling just short in the FA Cup and Champions League, it seems that Pep Guardiola’s side are looking to make some big name signings ahead of next season, which will likely also see some first-team regulars depart as the former Barcelona boss looks to end City’s woes in Europe after losing the Champions League final to Chelsea last season.

A host of names have been linked with the Citizens now that the transfer window is open, whilst the likes of Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva have all been linked with moves away.

Here’s how Football FanCast predicts Guardiola’s strongest XI could look next season…

After their title win was built on the improvement of their defence, with Ruben Dias a standout signing at the back, it seems unlikely that City will make too many defensive signings this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Nuno Mendes is one name who has been touted as a potential option at left-back but that seems reliant on whether or not they can get rid of Benjamin Mendy, with Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko likely to rotate their next season, with John Stones and Kyle Walker also likely to keep their regular spots.

Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri will likely be the regular midfield partnership for Guardiola, although a new defensive-midfield signing may be necessary if Fernandinho does not agree to a new contract with the Etihad outfit.

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez keep their place in attacking-midfield roles, with Phil Foden likely to be regular on the wing or through the middle, although the potential £100m signing of Jack Grealish could see him become a starter on the left.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Up front, Harry Kane could seal a £150m exit from Tottenham Hotspur to sign for Guardiola’s side, with the Citizens seemingly the most likely destination for the England captain.

And, in other news… Bye-bye Bernardo: Txiki should seal Man City swoop for “phenomenal” £27m-rated wizard

This week last year: NCA and the lessons to be learned

It was exactly a year ago, Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskarvisited the National Cricket Academy as the first guest lecturer.Gavaskar who was one of the five members of the NCA committee, formedunder the chairmanship of Raj Singh Dungarpur, spent time with thetrainees. Accompanying him was the Director Hanumant Singh and coachesRoger Binny and Vasu Paranjpe. It was all good news for Indian cricket that former players ofGavaskar’s stature were giving back quality time to the game. Wardslike Yuvraj Singh definitely benefited from the words of adviceGavaskar had for him to play his natural game and not get undulyworried about matters of technique. Yuvraj went on to make his debutin the ICC KnockOut Championship in Nairobi and fired the imaginationof the Indian cricket fans with a breathtaking innings against theAussies.Gavaskar did question the wisdom of the BCCI in giving the NCAtrainees a three-day match against the visiting Zimbabwe team. He wasof the opinion that there were other players in India who deserved toplay a match against a touring side. As is the norm in most cases, people in power do not take criticism lightly. Dungarpur launched apersonal attack on Sunil Gavaskar through a tabloid, questioningGavaskar’s sincerity to his position in the NCA. As the whole worldwould know, Gavaskar always plays with a straight bat and he offeredthe same to Dungarpur’s volley, offering his resignation.NCA, which was modelled on the academy in Australia, was furtherthrown into despair when Hanumant Singh and Vasu Paranjpe followedGavaskar in putting in their resignation. It was a terrible climax tothe year 2000 in which three players, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartikand Nikhil Haldipur were thrown out of the academy on disciplinarygrounds. Ironical it might sound that in the following monthsHarbhajan Singh turned to out to be the match winner for India in theTest series against Australia.Unlike the professional set-up in Australia, NCA has struggled toproduce the goods. Though Rodney Marsh has been involved in anadvisory capacity, NCA has been tied up in a knot, struggling to finda way forward. But not for long; by the end of March this year, NCAwas again in news. Sunil Gavaskar’s resignation was turned down andHanumant Singh made a comeback as a committee member. No wondercricket is called the game of glorious uncertainties.Following the home series win against Australia, with Indian cricketbuzzing after the gloomy days of the match-fixing saga, NCA announcedits intention of setting up five zonal academies. In addition to the20 odd trainees at the NCA, each of the zonal academies feature 20wards in their training programme. Definitely it gives more playersthe opportunity to fine-tune their game. All that needs to be seen iswhether the NCA and its five zonal wings will produce the goods in thelonger run. The players and the avid fans will be praying and hopingthat NCA will be run in a professional manner with a clear focus onthe game itself.NCA has not delivered anything spectacular to Indian cricket so far.Now that the likes of Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Roger Binny, NariContractor, Syed Kirmani and others are involved in the running of NCAand the zonal academies, the days of petty ego clashes and other farcemight be put to the back burner and cricket may get its proper due.People like Gavaskar have so much in them to pass on to the youngergeneration that the future of the game in India looks bright andprosperous. Hope is a good thing, if not the best thing in life.

Leeds can finally sell Casilla by signing Dieng

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa can finally wave goodbye to Kiko Casilla this summer by signing QPR’s Seny Dieng.

What’s the story?

The Athletic’s Phil Hay previously claimed towards the end of last season that Casilla is “one of the players we’ve been expecting Leeds to move on in the summer”.

And, after reports suggesting that Leeds are one of a number of Premier League sides tracking Dieng’s progress in the Championship, West London Sport have delivered an update on the situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

They revealed: “There have so far been no enquiries about Dieng despite speculation about his future resulting from his performances since leapfrogging both Lumley and Kelly to become first-choice keeper.”

Bielsa must land Dieng

While Leeds have yet to make a summer move for the 6 foot 4 Dieng just yet, Bielsa must surely ensure that the Whites do so and snap him ahead of the new Premier League season.

With Casilla being firmly relegated to being Illan Meslier’s number two, and Meslier’s emergence onto the scene, Bielsa must surely look to offload the £40k-a-week earning Spaniard this summer.

Speaking after Leeds’ FA Cup loss to Crawley Town earlier this season, journalist Daniel Storey, slammed: “I think Kiko Casilla was the other game-changer in a negative sense because I don’t think he should be playing for Leeds for non-football reasons, but he probably shouldn’t be playing for Leeds for football reasons after today.”

Meanwhile, Leeds TV podcaster, Oscar Mario called him a “complete liability”, and despite Bielsa’s surprise decision to bring him back into the fold on the final day of the Premier League season, his time at the club is surely up.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

In Dieng, the Leeds boss will have the perfect chance to wave goodbye to Casilla and bring in the kind of goalkeeper who could potentially challenge Meslier for that number one jersey.

Meanwhile, Bielsa may be heading for a major early window howler at Leeds…

Giles injury overshadows mixed day for England

Deep into Sri Lanka’s hinterland, in a town famous for its red rice and feted for its fiery fish curries, England enjoyed a day of mixed fortunes in their final practice game before the First Test Match in Galle.Having won the toss the England fast bowlers reduced a Sri Lankan board President’s XI to 24 for four on a clammy and unevenly grassed wicket. England’s rosy start, however, was overshadowed by an injury scare to their premier spinner and then tarnished by a bold fightback from a schoolboy making his first-class debut and a left-arm spinner with only one first-class fifty to his name before this match. The President’s XI were finally bowled out for 253. The true value of such a score is difficult to ascertain, but it is surely not far from par, especially with the abrasive surface likely to assist Sri Lanka’s trio of twirly men. However, the day’s cricket at Matara Sports Club was dominated by the news that Ashley Giles has sustained an injury just seven days away from the Galle Test. He bowled five overs for 23 runs in the morning before leaving the field to receive treatment for stiffness in his left Achilles tendon.Although England will be heartened to hear that the injury is not the same one that forced him to withdraw from the ICC Knockout in Kenya, it is a worrying development.Giles took 17 wickets in three Test Matches in Pakistan and was a crucial component in the team’s success. In Sri Lanka, he has continued where he left off in Karachi and as Duncan Fletcher said tonight: “He is a top spin bowler and we saw him as a kingpin in our attack in Sri Lanka.”The true extent of the injury is as yet unknown and Fletcher refused to be panicked by the news: “It’s an injury that has been with him for some time and he has successfully had injections for it in the past. We will have to monitor it over the next couple of days and take it from there.”Fletcher ruled out calling for a replacement at this stage. “A lot of people may like us to rush into this and start panicking but we want to look at this quite calmly and reassess the situation tomorrow.” Phil Tufnell and Chris Schofield are officially on standby for the tour.Graeme Hick had already pulled out of this game with a slight calf strain, giving a place to Craig White. Hick’s calf strain had worsened overnight but he is expected to be fit for the Test Match. The absence of Giles undoubtedly assisted the Sri Lankans as they repaired the early-morning damage inflicted by impressive opening spells from both Matthew Hoggard and Andrew Caddick. Both bowlers moved the ball in the air and continued to do so off the pitch as the day progressed.Caddick had Avishka Gunawardene caught at third slip as the bleary-eyed left hander, who has endured a gruelling 48 hours having just returned from New Zealand with the national squad, wafted at a short delivery.

MatthewHoggard : Seized Chance

Hoggard then clean bowled Ruwin Peiris for six and had schoolboy, Sunendra Kumara, caught at the wicket for two in his next over. White struck three balls later with his very first delivery to remove the inform Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has been asked to captain and keep wicket in this game.Hashan Tillakaratne, still in with a chance of selection in the Test side, and Jevantha Kalutunga, a free-flowing right-hander who has scored heavily in domestic cricket this year, survived until lunch and added 60 runs for the fifth wicket.Hoggard returned straight after the luncheon interval and soon had the ball smacking head high into Alec Stewart’s gloves. He cut short Tillakaratne’s gritty innings thanks to a diving catch in the gully by Craig White. Kalatunga was joined at the crease by Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and the pair added 38 runs before Kalatunga was caught at mid off for 54 from 96 balls to leave the President’s XI on 122 for six.England would have had high hopes of wrapping up the innings but the young Pushpakumara, who was making his first-class debut, and Niroshan Banadaratillake, who is likely to play in the Test match as Sri Lanka’s second spinner, frustrated the English bowlers with an entertaining 92-run partnership. The left-handed Pushpakumara first showed his class with a breezy fifty in England’s first two-day practice game in Colombo. He continued in the same positive vein today and dealt with the spin of Croft and Vaughan with particular authority. When Pushpakumara was caught at long off for 52 by Graham Thorpe to become the first of three wickets for Robert Croft, Banadaratillake threw caution to the wind and launched the Glamorgan off spinner for two sixes as he raced to 73 from just 90 deliveries.Matthew Hoggard had dropped a relatively simple catch off Banadaratillake when the bowler had made just 35, but made amends with a brilliant one-handed effort right on the edge of boundary to dismiss the right-hander. Croft and White then quickly wrapped up the innings and England survived the remaining nine overs of the day without alarm.
