Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr and GOAL's European Team of the Season for 2022-23

There were immense performances from all around the continent over the course of the campaign, but who makes GOAL's best XI?

The domestic European season will finally come to a close this weekend, with only the Champions League and Europa Conference League finals to wrap up before all attention can turn to the madness of the summer transfer window.

It's been a truly remarkable season for a number of individuals. Erling Haaland has destroyed record books in multiple competitions. Jude Bellingham has become one of the world's best midfielders as a teenager. Marc-Andre ter Stegen has racked up clean sheets at an unprecedented rate. Meanwhile, the likes of Kieran Trippier and Kim Min-Jae have been unexpected stars for resurgent sides.

But who were the best? And how can they be put in a perfect team? Here's GOAL's European Team of the Season…

Getty ImagesGK: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)

Ter Stegen has enjoyed the luxury of playing behind Europe's best defensive unit this year, but that takes nothing away from his level of performance. The German shot-stopper's save percentage was his best of the last three years, and could yet set a new record for clean sheets in a La Liga season.

There have been some standout individual performances, too. Ter Stegen made crucial saves in Barca's narrow win over Atletico Madrid, while his trio of stops against Athletic Club were also key in a spring push that saw the Blaugrana seal their first league title in four years.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRB: Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)

Right-back was an admittedly shallow position in Europe this year, but that's not to take anything away from Trippier. The Newcastle full-back is part of the reason why Eddie Howe's side made an unlikely push for Champions League football next year.

The England international was a creative force all season, setting up seven goals while also serving as a constant danger from set-pieces. Trippier's defensive impact is also not to be understated, with the right-back using every bit of his Atletico Madrid experience to add a much-needed toughness to Newcastle's backline.

Getty ImagesCB: Ronald Araujo (Barcelona)

It was going to come together at some point. Araujo is bigger, faster, and more athletic than everyone else. But he's also a supremely intelligent defender, capable of commanding spaces as well as functioning as a ball-winner. And this year, he finally reached the world-class potential that was always there.

Barcelona would not be the same team without him. And the scary thing is, he's still 24, and could spend many more years at the top.

GettyCB: Kim Min-jae (Napoli)

Undoubtedly one of the bargain signings in Europe this year, Min-Jae has been crucial in Napoli's march to their first Scudetto since 1990. He wasn't an entirely unknown quantity when the eventual league winners brought him in from Fenerbahce, but few knew that 'The Monster' would be this impactful.

Sadly, Napoli could well sell him this summer, with Manchester United linked with a big-money move for the South Korean. Regardless, it's been a fine 12 months in Italy for one of a burgeoning talent.

MANCHESTER CITY PIONEIRO

Taylor 291 revives England hopes

James Taylor compiled his highest first-class score of 291 to reaffirm his England credentials and give Nottinghamshire control at Horsham

David Lloyd20-Jul-2015
ScorecardJames Taylor fell nine short of a triple-century as Notts took charge at Horsham•Getty ImagesThere cannot be a bad day on which to score a huge double-hundred and rewrite a few records. But when the country you are desperate to represent once again has been hammered in an Ashes Test just 24 hours earlier, your timing looks absolutely spot-on.James Taylor is unlikely to be first cab off England’s rank – Jonny Bairstow surely deserves his place at the head of the batting queue – but a chanceless innings of 291 suggests quite strongly that the Nottinghamshire player’s engine is running sweetly again after a spluttering early summer.Three years have passed since Taylor made his only two Test appearances, against South Africa, but at 25 he remains a genuine candidate for further opportunities – and they could come sooner, rather than later, if this eight-hour, 385-ball knock proves to be the start of something big in the 2015 Championship programme.Taylor credits Moores effect

James Taylor highlighted the help given to him by former England coach Peter Moores after scoring 291 at Horsham – the second double-hundred of his career against Sussex. Moores arrived at Trent Bridge recently to bolster the county’s coaching staff and will remain with until the end of the season
“Peter has been outstanding for me,” Taylor said. “It’s no coincidence that over the last three weeks since he joined us I have played some important innings in T20 and now I’ve got this 291. I worked closely with him with England and now for Notts, and he has been brilliant.
“I haven’t scored as many runs this season and haven’t got the big scores I want before now. But as far as England is concerned I’d like to think I’ll be talked about again after this innings.
“It’s three years since I played my last Test and a lot has happened. I feel I have matured as a player and I know my own game a lot better. I’ve got a lot more experience in terms of knowledge of the game too and I’m more mature. I feel in a really good place after that knock and it’s up to me to kick on now.

Splendidly though the little right-hander played while compiling the highest Championship score by a Nottinghamshire batsman for 76 years, and the fourth highest of all time, a couple of points need noting: this Sussex attack – the admirable Steve Magoffin apart – is neither experienced enough nor sufficiently threatening to maintain pressure on a so-far sound pitch while the parched outfield at Cricket Field Road turns even firm pushes into boundary strokes. But, that said, Notts were in a spot of bother at 186 for 5 on Sunday when Taylor and Chris Read joined forces. And, come Monday evening, Harry Gurney – another England possibility should the Ashes continue to go badly from a home perspective – extracted enough bounce from the surface during an impressive, back-bending spell to discomfort Sussex’s batsmen.Back to Taylor, though. Walking out to take guard on the first day, his Championship season had a distinctly underwhelming look about it: a top score of 61 from 16 innings and an average of 29.By the time he left the crease for the final time in this innings, having carved Magoffin to backward point while trying to race to 300, his previous first-class best, of 242, had been put in the shade – as had both the ground record score (262 not out by Ian Bell in 2004) and the biggest individual contribution by a Notts player (268 not out by JA Dixon in 1897) at any venue against Sussex.Much more important to Taylor than any of those statistics, one suspects, is the manner in which he played: careful when required and then supremely confident once in the groove. How much the recent arrival at Trent Bridge of former England coach Peter Moores has had to do with Taylor’s revival is hard for the outsider to gauge but the batsman himself was full of praise for the consultant’s assistance.Resuming on 163, Taylor underlined his determination to cash in by defending resolutely for half an hour while adding just a single and getting his eye in. Thereafter, though, Sussex had next to no answer to either Taylor or Read as a stand of 174 rose, in leaps and bounds, to 365 before the latter thin-edged a catch behind. Oh, and just to keep the statisticians busy, a Notts partnership record against Sussex that had stood for 128 years disappeared along the way.Read’s third Championship hundred of the season was inevitably overshadowed by Taylor’s near triple. But between them the pair had put Notts in a position to dominate – and three wickets for Gurney in a final session that lost eight overs to bad light and drizzle did nothing to help Sussex sleep easy.

‘Lyon no longer just a support bowler’

Three wickets needed, a wearing SCG pitch, the light fading, India trying to cling on for a draw – it could have been the 2008 finish all over again. But Michael Clarke was in the commentary box this time, not out in the middle with ball in hand, and Ajinkya Rahane and Bhuvneshwar Kumar held their nerve, and held off the Australian charge. Steven Smith’s side instead had to settle for a draw and a 2-0 series victory. At tea on the final day, India needed 189 for an unlikely win with eight wickets in hand; Virat Kohli and M Vijay were at the crease. But both men fell soon after the resumption, and with the ball reverse-swinging, the pitch providing variable bounce for Nathan Lyon, and the momentum with Australia, they were followed inside by Suresh Raina, Wriddhiman Saha and R Ashwin. But then came the match-saving partnership between Rahane and Bhuvneshwar, who survived for nearly 12 overs. Bhuvneshwar handled the final one of the match from Lyon, confident enough to even drive the first delivery to the long-off boundary with all the fieldsmen up, and India reached safety. It was a draw, but after their loss in similar circumstances in Adelaide, it was also an achievement. Both men showed impressive calmness, Rahane doing his best to take most of the bowling himself, Bhuvneshwar able to keep Lyon’s sharp offbreaks down instead of flying to the assortment of men close-in on the leg side. Smith tried all four of his frontline bowlers in the dying stages, but it was to no avail; India finished on 7 for 252, with Rahane on 38 and Bhuvneshwar on 20.Notably, Australia did not break through in the final 10 overs of the match, after Smith took the new Kookaburra. He might later have reflected that a reverse-swinging bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Hazlewood, in particular, was getting the old ball to tail in to India’s right-handers. Starc proved a handful with it as well, but they were unable to get the new ball to talk. The session had started with all results possible, although India’s victory chances required a change in approach after they seemed focussed on the draw for most of the day. Vijay had twice taken Lyon for 16 in an over earlier, but when he tried to lift the tempo against Hazlewood’s pace his attempted cut resulted in an easy take for Brad Haddin, and he was out for 80.Kohli followed on 46 when Starc got one to straighten and caught the edge through to Shane Watson at first slip, and thus started a mini-collapse that had the Sydney crowd roaring. Raina completed a pair in his first Test for two and a half years, trapped lbw when Starc moved a ball back in, and India’s 2 for 178 had become 5 for 203.It was 6 for 208 when Saha was done by a Lyon offbreak that stayed perilously low and struck him directly in line with middle stump. The last hour began with Australia four wickets from victory, and they claimed one when Ashwin, who had held out for 22 balls for his single run, was lbw when Hazlewood reversed the old ball in late and struck him in front. But then came the new ball, and as it turned out, new hope for India. Hazlewood and Starc had been miserly all day, both conceding less than two an over. That helped to build the pressure as Lyon toiled at the other end, but for the first four hours of the day India handled the situation well, losing only one wicket in each session.Occasionally India, or more specifically Vijay, went on the attack. Sixteen runs came from Lyon’s penultimate over before tea, as Vijay used his feet to lift a six and a four down the ground, and swept another boundary. Another 16 had come in a Lyon over before lunch, including a lofted six over midwicket from Vijay, although in the same over Vijay edged a ball that ricocheted off Haddin and lobbed just out of reach of Watson at slip.It was that kind of day for the Australians, half chances falling just out of reach and, on occasion, being dropped. Shaun Marsh at short cover put down a tough when Vijay had 42 and the bowler, Ryan Harris, responded in frustration next delivery when Vijay pushed the ball back to him and Harris hurled it at the stumps, only to see it bounce in the footmarks and over the head of the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin for four overthrows. In the next over, Rohit Sharma pushed at Watson and edged wide of slip, where Smith hurled himself to his right to clutch a stunning one-handed catch. The only other wicket to fall in the first two-thirds of the day was KL Rahul’s, who advanced to Lyon but failed to get to the pitch of the ball and was caught off his glove at backward short leg.Australia nearly made it two from two deliveries when Rohit’s first ball resulted in a perilously close stumping chance; the TV umpire decided that there was enough doubt as to Rohit’s foot position to reprieve him. At that point, India were all about defence, trying to get themselves into a solid position before any thoughts of victory entered their minds. Not surprisingly, Australia had declared on their overnight score and set India 349 to win. For the third time in the series, the match went down to the last hour of the fifth day. There was no repeat of the dramatic Australian win in Adelaide, but nor was it the tamer draw of Melbourne. This result was somewhere in between, thrilling in its way, but with neither side coming out on top.And in the end, 2-0 seemed a fitting scoreline in a series in which Australia were more consistently strong all round, but India fought hard and showed impressive resolve.

Smith proves South Africa's recurring nightmare

On Wednesday, AB de Villiers said Steven Smith was an opposing captain’s nightmare, after his unbeaten 73 off 55 balls blasted Australia past 300 in Canberra. Two days later Smith proved to be a recurring nightmare, his 104 in Melbourne delivering Australia a series win in a match that looked dead and buried. From 5 for 98 in the 25th over, Smith and Matthew Wade took Australia to the brink of victory, before some late boundaries from James Faulkner ensured the target of 268 was reached. To recover from such a precarious position against an attack led by Dale Steyn showed the maturity and talent of Smith, who said the victory was “right up there” with any he had been part of.”I was lucky enough to have some good partners out there,” Smith said. “Matthew Wade came out and played beautifully from ball one and really took the pressure off. James Faulkner came in and did what he’s done so well over the last 12 to 18 months and finished the job. It made it a lot easier on me and I was just lucky to be there at the other end knocking them around, and Jimmy came in and hit some good boundaries. It ranks right up there.”We just needed to consolidate and play each ball on its merits. We knew if we had a few wickets in hand at the end it was going to get a lot easier. It certainly got a little bit easier when the dew came in and the wicket kept one pace. It was a little bit two-paced at the start of our innings. That made things a lot easier and we had a few wickets left in the shed at the end to go hard and credit to the boys we did well in the end.”Smith is in such impressive touch across all formats that he should enter the Test series against India as Australia’s most in-form batsman. It was therefore a slight concern for Australian fans to see Smith receive treatment from the team physio during his innings, and it remains to be seen whether a sore hip will see him rested for Sunday’s dead rubber in Sydney, but Smith was confident the problem would not be serious.”I’m just a little bit tight through my hips,” he said. “Hopefully it settles down tomorrow and I’ll be right to play on Sunday … No real concern. Hopefully it settles down tomorrow and everything should be fine.”Australia certainly hope so. One of the only Australians who handled the Test conditions in the UAE with any level of comfort, Smith is currently ranked 12th on the ICC’s Test batting rankings and is transferring his form to one-day cricket. The leading Australian run scorer in this series with 187, despite having been left out of the first game, Smith has effectively made himself an indispensable member of the side.In the long term, that could spell trouble for one of his batting colleagues, if captain Michael Clarke returns for the World Cup. Smith said he was disappointed to have been left out of the series opener in Perth given his strong ODI form against Pakistan in the UAE, but he said he was pleased to have responded with two Man-of-the-Match performances on his return.”I was a little bit disappointed but since I’ve been back I feel like I’m hitting the ball really well and I’m just looking to, every game I play for Australia, keep winning games for them and keep getting better at the same time,” Smith said. “I’m happy where everything is at, at the moment.”I think my whole batting in general has improved a lot over the last 12 months. I think I’m premeditating a lot less, I’m playing each ball on its merits and just looking to bat time. I get that opportunity when I’m batting at three and four in the one-day game, to bat a bit of time and spend some time in the middle. It always gets a lot easier, just when you get that time out there and give yourself a chance.”

  • Evan Gulbis – 229 v South Australia in Hobart in 2014

  • Aamer Yamin – 225 v Quetta in Multan in 2013

Evan Gulbis made the second highest first-class score for a No.8 batsman – after Wasim Akram’s 257 against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura in 1996 – and then took 4 for 7 to spearhead Tasmania’s innings-and-316-run victory against South Australia in Hobart. Needing 439 to make Tasmania bat again, South Australia were dismissed for 123 in 47.1 overs in their second innings.Tasmania began the third day at Bellerive Oval on 8 for 507 in their first innings, with Gulbis resuming on 156. He found a steady partner in Xavier Doherty, who contributed 43 to an 84-run stand for the ninth wicket. Gulbis then took his team past 600 with a 60-run stand with last man Jackson Bird, and became only the fifth double-centurion at No. 8 – and the first Australian – in first class cricket. Before this innings of 229 off 293 balls, Gulbis had scored only 217 runs in 17 first-class innings, with a high score of 80. His record-breaking effort led Tasmania to 651.Having been on the field for 168.5 overs, South Australia made a steady start to their second innings, with their openers adding 59. It was their largest partnership. Gulbis made the first breakthrough for Tasmnaia, dismissing Sam Raphael for 30. He then returned to take the last three wickets in the space of four balls to end the match. In between Gulbis’ strikes, Luke Butterworth wrecked the South Australia middle order with three rapid wickets, finishing with 3 for 18 in 11 overs.
