Ponting to captain in Clarke's absence

Australia’s selectors have turned to the former captain Ricky Ponting as the short-term leadership solution to Michael Clarke’s hamstring problem

Daniel Brettig14-Feb-2012Australia’s selectors have turned to the former captain Ricky Ponting as the short-term leadership solution to Michael Clarke’s hamstring problem.Less than a year after he passed the job to Clarke, Ponting will lead his country in Friday’s triangular series ODI against Sri Lanka in Sydney. In naming Ponting as the stand-in captain, the national selector John Inverarity said that David Warner’s leadership potential was being closely monitored, though it was thought best not to thrust him into the captaincy immediately. Warner still has only a modest record in ODI matches, and has made an indifferent start to this series.”After careful consideration the National Selection Panel has asked Ricky Ponting if he would captain the Australian ODI team in Michael Clarke’s absence,” Inverarity said. “David Warner is a young player making his way. He displays considerable leadership potential, but the NSP is of the view that he should not, at this moment, have the added responsibility of captaincy thrust on him.”David has been gaining valuable experience under Michael Clarke’s captaincy and now he will have the opportunity to grow his leadership skills further as vice-captain to Ricky Ponting. In making this decision the NSP reminded itself of the fact that Ricky Ponting led the winning Australian ICC Cricket World Cup teams in 2003 and 2007. The NSP appreciates the fact that Ricky is prepared to accept this responsibility in the wider interests of the team.”Australia ODI squad

Michael Clarke (capt), Ricky Ponting (capt for Friday’s ODI vs Sri Lanka), David Warner, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ben Hilfenhaus, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade (wk)

Clarke is expected to be fit in time to return to the team for Sunday’s match against India in Brisbane, the second of the two fixtures for which the 14-man squad was named. Another notable change was the resting of the fast bowler Ryan Harris, after he put in an uncharacteristically loose display with the ball and in the field against India in Adelaide.Inverarity said that Harris was carrying a few “minor niggles” while also appearing to show signs of fatigue after playing in the third and fourth Tests against India then the first three ODIs of the triangular series. In his place are Brett Lee, who has made a swift recovery from a broken bone in his foot, and Ben Hilfenhaus.”Some players are showing signs of fatigue after a demanding summer in which the Australian team has played with great intensity and purpose and performed with distinction,” Inverarity said. ” The NSP has omitted Ryan Harris for this reason and for the fact that he is carrying some minor niggles. The NSP has refreshed the squad with the inclusion of Brett Lee and Ben Hilfenhaus. Brett is making a good recovery from his toe injury and will be given rigorous fitness tests before Friday’s ODI fixture. As expected Michael Hussey returns to the squad.”Shane Watson, meanwhile, has been deemed ready to return to first-class cricket after a grade appearance in Sydney over the weekend. He will turn out alongside the Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin for New South Wales against Western Australia in Perth, in a Sheffield Shield match starting on Friday.”Shane played a Grade cricket game in Sydney on Saturday,” the team physio Alex Kountouris said. “He batted and bowled in that game without any issue and will be available for consideration for selection for a Bupa Shield game in Perth later this week as he continues his return from injury.”

A volta do décimo segundo jogador! Depois de ficar punida por seis jogos, a torcida da Ponte Preta poderá comparecer na partida contra o Fortaleza, neste domingo, às 18h, no Majestoso. O técnico João Brigatti exaltou a presença dos torcedores para o confronto.

-A torcida fez muita falta nesses jogos. Sentimos muita falta, eu principalmente.

Broad excited by England's new faces

Stuart Broad will hope that his personal change in fortune over the last couple of months will be replicated in England’s Twenty20 form when they take on India at Old Trafford. It is Broad’s second international as captain and his first, against Sri Lanka, couldn’t have gone much worse as the home side were hammered by nine wickets at Bristol.”We learned from the Sri Lanka defeat and as international cricketers it’s exciting to have fresh challenges against a strong Indian team,” he said. “It was a tough experience but you learn certain things from certain players. We know there’s a game to win and that’s what we’re focused on. We can take confidence from the Test series, the Twenty20 is not something to be scared of, we play the way we play because it can work for us.”Already, one-match into Broad’s reign, there have been significant changes to the line-up. Michael Lumb and Luke Wright, who featured at Bristol, both have long-term injuries while Ian Bell has been quietly pushed out of the Twenty20 set-up after being surprisingly left out against Sri Lanka. Those spaces have been taken by Alex Hales, Broad’s Nottinghamshire team-mate, Somerset’s Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes from Durham. The trio is among the most exciting talent in the county game. Hales and Buttler, who made 32 off 16 in the Friends Life t20 semi-final against Hampshire, in particular have been rewarded for match-winning domestic performances, while Stokes is viewed as a solution to England’s lack of boundary-hitting power in the middle order. Stokes made his ODI debut against Ireland in Dublin, and despite making just 3 off 10 balls is likely to figure in England’s plans over the winter, especially when he is fit to bowl again after fracturing a finger mid-season.”Alex Hales is one a tall guy, 6′ 4” – 6′ 5”, and strikes the ball hard,” Broad said. “He has an extremely high strike-rate [139.89] in the Twenty20 format and he’s done really well in red-ball and white-ball cricket. He’s an exciting talent.Jos Buttler’s hitting for Somerset has caught the eye of Stuart Broad•Getty Images

“We’ve seen Jos Buttler play all sorts of shots – particularly against Notts. He can hit over the keeper and fine leg and still has the power to find a straight boundary. He showed his talent on Twenty20 Finals day on Saturday. Stokesy is a strong guy, a big-hitter of the ball. He certainly showed his power in training.”That session at Old Trafford on Tuesday involved simulated match situations in the middle. It is a training method England have made use of before, putting batsmen and bowlers under pressure situations rather than just the normal net routine, and led to Kevin Pietersen getting a painful blow in the throat although there was no lasting damage as he prepared for his final international appearance of the summer.”It was designed to put the guys under match pressure and you get value for your shots,” Broad said. “As a bowler you see if you can get a yorker in the hole or a batsman gets hold of it. We did a first six [over] scenario, a spin scenario and a death scenario just to get used to it. The guys got a lot out of it, a few players struck some big blows and the bowlers nailed their skills as well. We created intensity in the field that we will expect to see.”You see guys playing under pressure and it was good to get out of the middle. From my point of view I’ve not bowled on that square since it has been turned around. You got a sense of the size of the boundaries and players how they will strike it.”For Broad, however, his time in charge of the national side is brief. Two days of training followed by the match will be the sum of his leadership until the two Twenty20 matches against West Indies which have been tagged onto the end of the season. They are now looking very important in Broad’s development of this team and he accepts he has to make the best use of whatever chances he gets.”We get three days every couple of months so you have to make use of these opportunities,” he said. “And then you get a World Cup where you can build up momentum and take that into the World Cup like we did Caribbean. Three months before that tournament we lost to the Lions in Abu Dhabi, then we were beating the best sides in the world. You have to make use of these opportunities and these sculpt your squad.”England’s World Twenty20 defence in Sri Lanka is now little more than 12 months away and, although plans came together at the last minute for the 2010 edition, Broad and Andy Flower will want to have some settled ideas by the end of the summer. A victory against India would be a good place to start.

Spurs handed Milinkovic-Savic boost

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who relayed the comments of Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri regarding the potential departure of the central midfielder – who has been heavily linked with a £68m move to Tottenham – in which the 63-year-old claimed that, should the Serbia international go on to leave Rome at the end of the current campaign, he will not be sold to another Serie A side.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Regarding the potential sale of the 27-year-old, Sarri said: “Speaking to the president, I have become convinced that if Milinkovic does leave, and that will not happen easily, he will not remain in Italy.”

He’d be “unreal” for Conte

Considering just how impressive Milinkovic-Savic has been for Lazio over the past seven years, in addition to the fact that Antonio Conte is reported to have prioritised the signing of a new central midfielder ahead of Tottenham’s 2022/23 campaign, Sarri’s update revealing that the Serbian will not remain in Italy this summer will certainly come as a huge boost to Paratici’s chances of landing the 27-year-old.

Indeed, the £63m-rated midfielder has proven over his 36 Serie A appearances this season just how good of a signing he would be for Spurs, bagging 11 goals, registering 11 assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots, making 1.4 key passes and completing 1.2 dribbles per game.

The £95k-per-week talent has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.9 tackles, 51.2 passes, 1.1 clearances and winning 6.9 duels – at a success rate of 51% – per fixture.

These metrics have seen the player who David Amoyal dubbed “unreal” average a rather breathtaking SofaScore match rating of 7.30, not only ranking him as Lazio’s best performer in the Italian top flight but also as the joint 10th-best player in the division as a whole.

Indeed, these extraordinary returns have also seen the KRC Genk starlet earn comparisons to some of Europe’s most prestigious midfield talents, with FBref data showing that the 27-year-old’s output is similar to that of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka.

As such, it is clear for all to see just how well suited Milinkovic-Savic would be to Conte’s tactical setup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leading us to believe that Paratici must do all he can to convince the Serbian sensation of a move to north London this summer.

PCB stops Kaneria from joining Test squad

Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria has been refused “clearance” by the PCB to join the Test squad for the series against South Africa in the UAE

Osman Samiuddin07-Nov-2010Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria has been refused “clearance” by the PCB to join the Test squad for the series against South Africa in the UAE.Kaneria was due to fly to Dubai early on Sunday morning as one of a group of five players but he was called by a board official just before he was due to leave for the airport and informed that he could not go. Mohammad Sami, Azhar Ali, Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Yousuf all left to join the squad.”Danish has not been given clearance by the board,” Zakir Khan, the PCB’s director of cricket international, told ESPNcricinfo. No other reason was given. Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, and other officials were unavailable for comment. The last-minute development is bound to fuel speculation over the reasons of the sudden u-turn. Kaneria was selected in the original squad announced in October and, as chief selector Mohsin Khan repeatedly stressedthat no player will be selected unless he was cleared by the chairman, it must be assumed that Kaneria was cleared initially.Kaneria was also part of the training camp the team had before the departure for the UAE. He has since played in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy as well, taking 18 wickets in two games for Habib Bank Limited. He last played for Pakistan in the Trent Bridge Test against England in August, after which he was dropped. Kaneria had played 61 Tests and is the country’s most successful spinner with 261 wickets. It is not clear whether the decision has anything to do with the PCB’s attempts – compelled by the ICC’s warning last month – to put its house in order and tighten up against corruption. Kaneria was the subject of a criminal investigation through the summer by Essex police over allegations that he was involved in spot-fixing during a county game. The investigations had begun in May but Kaneria was cleared by police in September.

We have to remain positive – Taibu

This is Tatenda Taibu’s third tour of South Africa, and despite his record against them he is yet to taste victory in the country

Liam Brickhill in Potchefstroom17-Oct-2010

Tatenda Taibu: “I thought there was enough time to get another hundred against South Africa”•AFP

Tatenda Taibu clearly enjoys the challenge of competing against the South Africans. He was the only Zimbabwe batsman to make the most of another flat track in the second ODI, scoring 78 out of a total of 268, but his one-day record against Zimbabwe’s southern neighbours is one that any international batsman would envy: in 13 matches against South Africa he has scored 499 runs at an average of 49.90, including two unbeaten hundreds and two half-centuries.”I thought there was enough time to get another hundred against South Africa,” Taibu said after the game. “I always cherish my innings that I play against south Africa, because they are one of the best teams so if you play well against them it’s always an innings to cherish. There was definitely enough time for me to get a hundred so I was a little disappointed not to get there.”This is Taibu’s third tour of South Africa, and despite his record against them he is yet to taste victory in the country. Zimbabwe have performed admirably on their most recent trip, but the gulf between the two sides remains a wide one and it will take a special effort to register a consolation victory in the final match of the series in Benoni on Friday. Taibu, however, urged his teammates to remain positive.”We have to carry on being positive, we shouldn’t lose that,” insisted Taibu. “We should keep our shoulders high and our chins up and play as positively as we can because that’s our only chance to beat South Africa. We obviously have a lot of work to do on our bowling, and also with the batsmen. When they get starts they need to carry on and score big runs as the South Africans are doing.”When you look at the two teams at the moment, you can see the intensity that the South Africans have and we have to emulate that as we try to become a recognised team.”
