Bagai steps down from Canada captaincy

Ashish Bagai has stepped down as captain of Canada ahead of the Intercontinental Cup which begins in June

ESPNcricinfo staff30-May-2011Ashish Bagai has stepped down as captain of Canada ahead of the Intercontinental Cup which begins in June. The 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Bagai, who made his debut in 2003 and has had two stints as captain, will still be available for selection as a player. Bagai led Canada in the 2011 World Cup in which they beat higher-ranked Kenya in the group stages. He made two half-centuries during the tournament.”It has been an honour to captain my country in the sport I love and I thank everyone in this organisation who helped and supported me throughout my term including administrators, coaches, managers and most of all, the players,” Bagai said in a letter to Cricket Canada’s board.”I undertook each task over the last two years with the primary objective of moving not just the team but also the entire organisation forward.”Bagai was appointed captain for the 2007 Intercontinental Cup when he was just 25 but chose to take up a job in the banking industry in the UK later the same year, making him unavailable for many of Canada’s matches. In 2009 he quit his job and signed a contract with Cricket Canada to play the sport full-time and has been captain of the national team since.Cricket Canada have accepted Bagai’s decision to step down and indicated they would still select him as a player.”Cricket Canada thanks Ashish for his outstanding contribution to Canadian cricket at a time when circumstances were difficult and challenging,” Cricket Canada president Ranjit Saini said in a statement. “I wish him well and look forward to his continued contribution as a player and strong supporter of Canadian cricket.”Canada will have to name a new captain for the Intercontinental Cup in which they will play four-day matches over a 28-month time frame against Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, Kenya, Netherlands, Namibia and UAE.

Sore heads, bleary eyes, great memories

The morning after winning the World Cup the Indian team had an appointment with the president

Nagraj Gollapudi in Mumbai03-Apr-2011″I was in a state of shock,” Gary Kirsten said as he described his emotions to Ratnakar Shetty, the World Cup tournament director, who also happens to be the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, less than 24 hours after India had become world champions. Both men stood on the lawns of the Raj Bhavan, residence of the Governor of Maharasthra, whose capital city is Mumbai. If you were expecting to see bleary-eyed men sleep walking you would have been disappointed. The entire India squad, along with the support staff, had turned up to meet the president of India Pratibha Patil. Wearing the smart green and white-collared team T-shirts, every man looked fresh and relaxed. Not that there were no celebrations after the World Cup triumph. As Yuvraj Singh had assured last evening, he would make sure it would be an unforgettable night. “I did not sleep,” he said, wearing a pair of much-needed sunglasses. Paddy Upton was briefer. “Hungover,” he said when asked about the feeling after the biggest day in his life. Harbhajan Singh concurred with Upton and added “was up till 8am”. Munaf Patel had probably slept the most. “I don’t drink. I don’t party,” he said with his open smile.MS Dhoni, wearing a new look, having shaved his head (purported reasons varied from “spontaneity” to “religious”) was kept busy by the various bigwigs, which included a mixture of politicians, industrialists and administrators. Sharad Pawar, the ICC president, attended the function along with chief executive Haroon Lorgat. The function was also attended by chiefs of other foreign boards: James Sutherland (Australia), Giles Clarke (England), Ernest Hilaire (West Indies) and few members from the Associates and the Affiliates. The fervent celebrations that erupted immediately after Dhoni had lit up the India skies with the winning six continued through Sunday in Mumbai. Even on regular Sundays the Gateway of India, an iconic outpost which stands opposite the Indian team hotel, is the most-visited spot in the megapolis. Today a few thousand extra came in to get a glimpse of the world champions.Through the night the fans had jumped, hooped, danced and shrieked “we are the champions, we are the champions”. Those chants were again heard on the streets leading form the team hotel to the Governor’s house on Sunday. The newspapers had made the people aware of the fact the players were meeting the president. Tourists and locals lined up along Marine Drive, the road which runs along the sea and leads up to Malabar Hill where Raj Bhavan is located. The whistles and the vuvuzelas kept the tempo alive. Flags waved from the balconies and windows. A few decided to take their own victory bus ride as they hired a double-decker and passed behind the team hotel, hooting and cheering the Indians. Mumbai Indians, the IPL team Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh represent, had put out a giant hoarding to congratulate the team.

Even on regular Sundays the Gateway of India, an iconic outpost which stands opposite the Indian team hotel, is the most-visited spot in the megapolis. On Sunday, a few thousand extra came in to get a glimpse of the world champions

The day had started early for the players. They had a photo shoot with the Gateway of India as the backdrop. Tendulkar and Dhoni wore suits, Yuvraj and others were more casual. Every player held the Cup with various poses. Tendulkar later said that he was happy that he had never stopped chasing his dream of winning the World Cup. If anything he made sure he would never give up.”It was a very emotional moment because I had never dreamt in my wildest of dream that I will be able to see such wonderful moments in my life,” he said. “I would like to thank God for giving me such a wonderful day in my life. Whatever hard work as a team we have put in, we have got the fruits of it. Not just we as a team, the entire nation is happy in our win. That is what we wanted to achieve the most.”Tendulkar pointed out that even if winning the World Cup was his ultimate dream his passion for cricket was still very much alive. “I think this would be a proud moment for everyone in our country. We don’t get to see such wonderful days everyday, so I think it is a very special day for every Indian,” he said. Many agreed, including Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Mumbai Indians, who had walked in along with his wife Nita and socialised with Anjali Tendulkar and Sakshi Dhoni. The Ambanis had arrived at the same time the Indian players lined up to meet the first lady of India. Ambani made sure he would not obstruct the flow of the things and stepped back, allowing the players to interact with the Indian president freely. “This is an achievement by the Indian team dedicated to the people of India. This is something that will inspire the youth of India,” Ambani said. His wife said when India won the Cup for the first time she was “just 19”, but today she was one with the Indian team. “I am so happy team India has done us all proud,” Nita Ambani said. Standing by her side, Anjali Tendulkar listened quietly. No amount of requests and pleads would force her to reveal how she felt. Instead, she made sure Dhoni’s wife was comfortable, considering Sakshi was still getting used to attend such social evenings.Kumar Manglam Birla, another noted industrialist, enquired if Gautam Gambhir’s parents were present at the ground on Saturday evening. “No, they were not here as I tend to get tense if they come and watch my game. I asked them to stay back home and enjoy the game,” he said. Later, Birla’s wife told Harbhajan that he was their son’s favourite cricketer. Another elderly lady politely asked Harbhajan about the Powerplays and the pressure on bowlers. Harbhajan did not lose the opportunity to point out the bowlers were under the pump more than the batsmen.Players like Virender Sehwag and Munaf Patel desisted from speaking to the media but youngsters like Virat Kohli and R Ashwin were open about living a dream so early in their lives. Kohli dedicated the win to his late father, who he said always wanted him to play for India. As the sun set, a cool breeze wafted through and the Mumbai police brass band played the national anthem once again to send off the president. The players got ready to leave. They had to pack to get back home before joining their IPL teams. But for the moment, they had to re-join the party.

Man United can offload Wan Bissaka

Manchester United are expected to have several outgoings this summer due to contract expiration, but Erik ten Hag could be set to offload even more players as new transfer interest emerges.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic, Crystal Palace are interested in bringing back Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Selhurst Park this summer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

The report suggests that there has been no official move made for the right-back, and no decision will be made on his future at Old Trafford until new manager Ten Hag has come in to assess the squad he has inherited.

This comes following the news that fellow defender Harry Maguire may also exit in the summer

Forget Maguire

This new development from Crystal Palace could be a huge benefit to the Dutch coach, who can finally axe the defender from the team as he attempts to rebuild the squad and revive the club when he joins this summer.

The 24-year-old defender who was dubbed “reckless” by Jamie Carragher, has been disappointing in his 26 appearances for the club this season with uninspiring and poor defensive performances throughout.

Wan-Bissaka has had two errors leading to shots, gave away a penalty to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, loses possession 14 times per game on average, has only won 37% of his aerial duels and only wins possession 0.3 times per game.

That proves the right-back is showing no dominance or threat in his position and making costly mistakes that have contributed to Manchester United’s poor season.

The Red Devils are said to be already looking at replacements to fill the boots in the right-back role, with the Daily Mail reporting back in January that they are eyeing up a move for Tariq Lamptey this summer, so this speculation about a move back to London for Wan-Bissaka could be a win-win situation for both the player and the club.

With Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani all set to leave on a free this summer, Ten Hag will likely have a busy transfer window ahead of him and we could see a number of new faces at Man United this summer whilst many old faces are shown the door to kick off the new manager’s revolution.

Ralf Rangnick could seal Man Utd exit

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick may be about to become the new boss of the Austria national team, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: Rangnick struggles in charge

The 63-year-old replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last year, taking up an interim role until the end of the season and looking to turn United’s fortunes around.

In truth, Rangnick has struggled to impress, however, proving unable to lift the Red Devils’ performance level and suffering some damaging Premier League defeats against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

The German has been linked with taking up a director of football role at Old Trafford when Erik ten Hag comes in, but a new update suggests that may not happen.

The Latest: Key update emerges

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Sky Germany’s Plettenberg claimed that Rangnick is in talks to become Austria’s new manager, with an announcement even possible on Friday:

“What a development, it’s true what @KURIERat is reporting! Rangnick is close to become the new head coach of Austria! Nothing is signed yet. Last details have to be clarified now. Announcement of the big deal could follow tomorrow.”

Some reports have suggested he could perform both the national team role and serve as a consultant at United, but that is not yet confirmed.

The Verdict: Potential loss

While Rangnick has struggled as manager – in fairness, the players need to have a look at themselves – not having him in a different role moving forward could be a blow, given his expertise and experience, namely within the Red Bull model, who are known for their incredible recruitment.

The hope was that he and Ten Hag could potentially dovetail with one another, in terms of recruitment and the overall running of matters, but that ship looks to have already sailed, and it’s hard to imagine he’ll be 100 per cent focused in a consultancy role if serving as Austria boss at the same time.

It is hard to begrudge Rangnick a national side job, but if a late change of heart happens, it could still be better for United to have his full attention on Old Trafford.

Leeds: Orta handed boost in Roberts pursuit

Leeds United have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Haydon Roberts to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

In recent comments made to Sussex Live, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter revealed that the centre-back will likely be leaving the American Express Community Stadium ahead of the 2022/23 campaign – as the 19-year-old is in need of regular first-team football in order to continue his development in the professional game.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

And, while Potter is likely referring to a season loan deal for the defender, the 46-year-old’s remarks will certainly have caught the attention of Victor Orta, who is reported to have a long-standing interest in the England U19 international – even seeing an offer for Roberts rejected in the summer of 2020.

Orta must move for Roberts

Considering the sheer amount of potential Roberts quite clearly possesses, should an opportunity arise to land the centre-back this summer, it is one Orta simply must do everything he can to take.

Indeed, Potter himself has previously revealed his excitement regarding the 19-year-old’s ability, stating back in September of last year: “He’s a really exciting player. He is obviously young and he has got a lot to learn but he has got some really interesting attributes.

“Very strong, very quick, very mobile. Powerful. Good with the ball, brings it out well. He’s got good courage so he’s got a lot of things that are really exciting, that fit how we want to try and do things.”

Furthermore, back in 2020, The Athletic spoke to a number of scouts about Roberts’ future in the game, with one even drawing comparisons between the Brighton starlet and the former Leeds loanee, Ben White:

“I like him. I think he’s a good defender. [The only question is] about his size to play there, but then again look at Ben White. You probably wouldn’t think he is so good in the air but he’s been outstanding for Leeds this season.

“One plus point with Haydon is he is left-footed. To have a left-footed centre-half is so much better. It offers variety. He’s got quality on the ball. He has played in midfield as well a few times.

“It’s good for young centre-backs to go in there, put themselves under a bit more pressure playing in other areas. I’ve seen him play left-back a couple of times for England. Whether he wants to play there is a question mark.”

As such, while it is true that Jesse Marsch is not exactly short of options in the heart of his Leeds defence – with the likes of Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Pascal Struijk, Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell in his first-team squad – the signing of Roberts would nevertheless appear to be an astute one for Orta to make this summer.

Indeed, with the right-footed Cresswell coming on leaps and bounds this season, forming a partnership between the 19-year-old and the £4.2k-per-week Roberts – who Andy Naylor dubbed a “talent” – could well prove to become the base on which the Leeds side is built for many a year to come.

AND in other news: Orta plotting Leeds offer for “under the radar” talent, it could be bye-bye Phillips

Man United: Should ten Hag sign Harry Kane?

A managerial saga tends to embody that of a horse race and with Manchester United’s hunt to find Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term successor, that has never been more true.

In the running has been the likes of Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag but only one of them has made it over the final jump and into the home straight.

That happens to be ten Hag, someone who has always been front and centre of most races he’s competed in.

Indeed, the Dutch coach has an impressive CV, winning the Eredivisie on two occasions and taking home the Netherland’s domestic cup competition on the same number of occasions.

He very nearly made it to the final furlong in the Champions League too, only to be defeated by Pochettino’s Spurs side in the semi-final back in 2018/19.

However, it’s funny how football works itself out, because ten Hag is now set to beat that very man to the hot seat at Old Trafford, and he could also prise away one of Pochettino’s main men of days gone by; Harry Kane.

United have often been linked with a move for the Tottenham striker and this summer is no different. That said, they may have to part ways with a whopping £100m or even more according to claims made in recent days.

Yet, if ten Hag can finally bring the England captain to Man United, it would be a remarkable way to introduce himself to the club’s fanbase.

To put things simply, he would become an instant hit with the Old Trafford crowd, bringing a player to United who could not only make their rebuild easier, but also bring them closer to the title in a quicker fashion.

United have often been linked with Erling Haaland too but in Kane, someone dubbed an “animal” by football writer Andrew Gaffney, they’d discover someone who is arguably even better right now.

The Norwegian powerhouse has admitted himself that the Spurs striker is better than him and considering his proven record in the Premier League, a move would certainly be less of a gamble.

Haaland may have scored one more goal than the England international this term but it’s evident the latter provides you with much more than just being able to find the net.

When it comes to shot-creating actions, Kane is out in front with 3.26 per 90 minutes compared to Haaland’s 2.61, according to FB Ref. Furthermore, the progressive distance with which the former plays his passes is also considerably larger, averaging a whopping 115.8 yards per 90 compared to the Norway international’s measly 38.8 yards.

On top of that, Tottenham’s star man provides more from a defensive point of view, winning more pressures per 90 inside his own team’s half and in the middle of the pitch.

Despite Haaland’s raw pace, it’s Kane again who comes out on top when it comes to progressing with the ball, making 3.94 progressive carries with the ball at his feet per 90 in comparison to Haaland’s 3.07.

With that in mind, it looks as though the 28-year-old would be a far better acquisition for the present.

Ten Hag must do all he can to lure the forward to Old Trafford this summer.

AND in other news, Man Utd now plot bid to sign £60m “special talent”, he’s miles better than Rashford…
