Leeds United have been tipped to consider bringing Reading midfielder John Swift to Elland Road this summer, LeedsLive report.

Swift was linked with a move to Yorkshire in the January window, with reports suggesting the 26-year-old was on the club’s list of midfield targets.

As we know, a move for the Royals star didn’t materialise, with Leeds failing to add to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad in any capacity.

Bielsa, who Phil Hay said admired Swift, was sacked in February, with Jesse Marsch the new man in charge, but despite the switch in manager, Swift has come up in conversation once again ahead of the summer window.

LeedsLive reporter Danny Bloomer shared a story on Thursday morning, looking at five free agents the Whites could be interested in this summer.

Swift was one of those, with no progress made with Reading regarding a new contract, and as a result, he could end his six-year stay with the club.

The Verdict: Smart signing?

Swift, labelled as ‘super-talented’ by former Reading boss Veljko Paunovic, has been in impressive form this season, contributing to 24 goals in 38 Championship games, netting 11.

Therefore, picking up the attacking midfielder on a free transfer to bolster Marsch’s midfield options could be a shrewd piece of business. The 26-year-old is clearly a player of interest to Victor Orta given the interest in January and the Whites only have four midfielders on the books at this moment in time.

He appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high £5.4m Transfermarkt valuation, so the coming months could be the perfect time to firm up their long-term interest in the former Chelsea youngster.

The Verdict: Must secure an alternative

With time running out in the January transfer window and a new midfielder badly needed, it is important that Leeds now turn their attention elsewhere.

Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw are both currently out injured, leaving Marcelo Bielsa short of options at the heart of midfield, and someone like Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez would be a fantastic addition before deadline day ends on Monday.

The Uruguayan has a huge amount of experience, winning 49 caps for his country, also winning an average of 2.3 aerial duels and 1.9 tackles per game in Serie A this season.

He may be able to leave this month and he would be an upgrade on Vieira, having been linked with the club since last summer.

Everton are once again on the hunt for a new permanent manager with Duncan Ferguson having to hold the fort on a temporary basis in his latest caretaker role after the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

Before even officially being appointed at Goodison Park, protests began from Toffees fans against the former Liverpool manager.

With just seven wins, four draws and 11 defeats in the 22 games he had in charge of Everton across all competitions with the latest being a disheartening 2-1 defeat against Dean Smith’s relegation battling Norwich City at Carrow Road, it’s safe to say that Benitez’s second spell of managing in Merseyside did not go too well, thus leaving Ferguson to pick up the pieces and steady the ship.

While Farhad Moshiri is on the lookout for a new permanent manager for his side, there has, unsurprisingly, been a significant number of names linked with the position.

One name that has been mentioned with the role that a lot of Premier League followers will be familiar with is AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite having success managing in England in the past, mostly with Chelsea where he won three Premier League titles and one FA Cup across two spells in charge of the west London club as well as winning the Europa League with Manchester United, things haven’t always been smooth-sailing for the 58-year-old.

Having admitted to being “arrogant” during his early days of managing in England, there have been occasions where claims have emerged suggesting that he had lost the dressing room during his time at Tottenham and United.

Given the drama that Mourinho has been involved in during his previous spells at clubs in the Premier League, like having rocky relationships at United with the likes of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw, he could end up being another version of Benitez; somebody who arrives with previous experience of managing in the Premier League and at top clubs, but ultimately dragging Everton towards the relegation zone and falling out with players, as the Spaniard did with Lucas Digne.

Also, in a recent poll run by Football FanCast, it seems as though 77% of voters think that Mourinho would not be a good appointment for Everton, further suggesting that the Toffees should be looking elsewhere for their new permanent manager instead of risking a potential disaster at the helm.

Everton have held talks with Ashley Cole over a potential coaching role in Frank Lampard’s Goodison Park set-up. 

That’s according to an on-air update from Sky Sports News, which was shared via Football Daily on Twitter.

The lowdown

Lampard’s appointment as Rafael Benitez’s permanent successor was confirmed by Everton on Monday.

He spent 13 years of his playing career at Chelsea (from 2001 to 2014) and was a team-mate of Cole for more than half of that time (2006-2014). Together, they won the Premier League in 2010, the Champions League in 2012 and the Europa League in 2013.

Cole then played under Lampard at Derby County in his final season before retirement, and the then-Rams boss said that the defender’s ‘experience’ was a ‘really good’ asset, hailing him as a ‘machine’ (via Goal).

The latest

Sky Sports News reporter Hayley McQueen revealed on-air on Tuesday morning (via Football Daily) that Lampard had set about adding Cole to his backroom team. The former England left-back is set to decide whether to accept or reject the offer this week.

McQueen stated: “Little bit of news just coming into us, Frank Lampard wants Ashley Cole to join him as part of his coaching staff at Everton.”

Her colleague Jo Wilson then added: “We understand discussions have taken place to bring Lampard’s former teammate on board at Goodison Park, with a decision expected to be made in the next few days.”

The verdict

Lampard has asked the likes of Duncan Ferguson, Leighton Baines and Alan Kelly to remain at the club, but he will see Cole as a fresh face who can help to implement his vision at Goodison Park.

The 41-year-old’s presence could be invaluable. Cole has honed his coaching skills working with Chelsea’s youth teams and the England under-21 side.

A player of his stature – he has been nominated for a place in the Premier League Hall of Fame – should also command great respect from the Everton players, so it seems a sensible move from Lampard to try and instigate a reunion with his former club and international colleague.

Paul Marsh, the ACA’s chief executive, said the players want to be involved in the event, but there are safety fears following a threat from the 313 Brigade, Al-Qaeda’s operational arm in Pakistan.”The independent report has identified some serious concerns with aspects of the current security process,” Marsh said after the meeting in Sydney. “Specifically these concerns relate to the reported direct threat against the event and the status and implementation of the IPL’s security plan.”The process from here is for all players associated to meet with their player groups and for all of us to feed back the concerns raised from these meetings to the IPL. This will be coordinated through our peak body the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations. From here we will await a response from the IPL.”Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players’ Association chief, also outlined the security concerns at a press conference in Christchurch. “There have been threats against cities in India, and clearly a direct threat against the event,” Mills said. “A combination of those and our lack of confidence in security management plans have led us to having to ask some questions of the IPL and see whether they can alleviate those concerns.”It’s one thing to have a security management plan, it’s a much different thing to see it delivered and delivered well. It’s quite complex when you consider the IPL is played across 12 cities, 12 police jurisdictions throughout India. There are some real concerns around that aspect.”So far the IPL has rejected dealing with players’ associations, a move which forced unions from Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa to commission their own safety report on the situation in India. They never got close as Philander again was in the wickets with 4 for 32 and Peterson completed an excellent all-round game by collecting 5 for 60.
