O Tricolor abre sua participação no Paulistão contra o Mirassol, no Pacaembu, enquanto o Eintracht Frankfurt inicia o segundo turno do Campeonato Alemão recebendo o Freiburg – no momento, ocupa a sexta colocação.

Mid-table crisis for Bangalore

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai

The Preview by Devashish Fuloria08-May-2012Match factsWednesday, May 9, Mumbai
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Will it be again down to Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers for Royal Challengers?•AFP

Big PictureMumbai Indians face Royal Challengers Bangalore for the first time this season, thanks to the scheduling. The two heavyweights have met each other nine times in IPL and the record is almost even with five wins to Mumbai Indians. Both teams were pre-tournament favourites, boasting intimidating batsmen and experienced bowlers. However, things haven’t gone smoothly for either. Royal Challengers have five wins and five losses and they are lingering in mid-table, trying to push their way up. A loss in Mumbai will put them in a tight spot. Mumbai Indians have been slightly luckier with seven wins out of eleven, even though they have been inconsistent. Whereas, Royal Challengers have been overly dependent on the Gayle-de Villiers duo, Mumbai’s batting has flickered between good and ordinary. However, the difference between the teams is mainly in the potency of their bowling attacks. Mumbai Indians are the second most economical team, giving away 7.28 runs per over as against Royal Challengers’ 8.47, the worst in the tournament. This has affected their ability to take wickets as they average 36.82 runs per wicket against Mumbai Indians’ 21.80, the best among all the teams. No surprises here as Mumbai Indians also have three bowlers in the top ten list of leading wicket takers while Zaheer Khan, Royal Challenger’s top bowler, is 18th. Royal Challengers addressed the issue by bringing back Muttiah Muralitharan in place of Daniel Vettori in their previous game and he responded with an economical spell, but lacked support from the other end. Both teams have done better in chases with a few last-ball finishes. However, de Villiers, who has been critical in those situations, might find Lasith Malinga slightly trickier than Dale Steyn in such a situation. In any case, that sets the stage for interesting contests – Tendulkar-Muralitharan, Malinga-Gayle, Malinga-de Villiers.Form guide (most recent first, completed games)
Mumbai Indians: WWWLW
Royal Challengers Bangalore: WLLWWPlayers to watchAB de Villiers made Steyn look pedestrian, taking 23 runs off his last over. Overall, de Villiers has scored 292 runs at a strike-rate of 171.76. With no support from the Indian contingent in the team, the responsibility of setting up the pace would again be on him along with Chris Gayle.Lasith Malinga has been taking wickets for fun. If he can break the Gayle-de Villiers combine -the spine of Royal Challengers’ batting – that would be more than half the job done.Stats and trivia Royal Challengers Bangalore are the second fastest batting team behind Delhi Daredevils with a strike rate of 130.71. Mumbai Indians are the slowest with 114.27. Royal Challengers have hit the most sixes in the tournament – 73. Most of them have come from Gayle (31) and de Villiers (14). Mumbai Indians have hit 51 sixes. Three of Mumbai Indians’ seven wins have come off the last ball. They also managed another tight win against Kings XI Punjab with only one remaining.Quotes”I told him [RP Singh] to give me the three balls that were left as I knew I could do it from there.”

“I won’t say I’m a finisher of the game. I can even get better hopefully as there’s lots of room for improvement.” “

Morgan Review faces its moment of truth

The ECB Board would have to face down rising discontent at Lord’s today if it opted to implement David Morgan’s recommendations over the future structure of county cricket.

The ECB Board would have to face down rising discontent at Lord’s today if it opted to implement David Morgan’s recommendations over the future structure of county cricket.Morgan, the former chairman of the ICC and ECB, was appointed in May 2011 to lead a review into the “business of county cricket”. After months of consultation with a variety of the game’s “stakeholders” – though notably few spectators – he submitted his full report to the ECB board in January. The ECB Board, keen to show leadership after years of prevarication, have not only expressed provisional support for Morgan’s conclusions, but insisted that his recommendations – which include a 14-match championship, reduced from 16, a return to 50-over cricket and a minimum of 14 T20 matches per county – must be adopted as a package. While the board can – and might – impose that decision upon the counties, Morgan’s conclusions have received such widespread criticism that there is a growing sense of caution from some at ECB over their implementation.Indeed, Morgan achieved that rarest of things in county cricket: unanimity of sorts. The Professional Cricketers’ Association, the vast majority of the county chief executives, coaches and chairmen, the ECB’s cricket committee and, according to unofficial on-line polls, the majority of spectators, have all expressed their reservations over Morgan’s recommendations. The recurring theme of their issue with the report is the reduction in the championship program and the subsequent compromise to the integrity of the competition. That leaves the board with few options. While they are loathe to be seen to U-turn on such a key issue, they are also reluctant to so blatantly ignore the views of all the parties they represent. One potential – and very ECB – solution would be to defer a final decision pending more consultation. It could almost be their catchphrase.

It was just massive relief – Guptill

Martin Guptill, the New Zealand opener, has said the fight and heart his team showed on the fourth day of the Hobart Test will give them confidence for the future

New Zealand celebrate the fall of the final wicket and their first Test win in Australia for 26 years•AFP

A couple of hours after Doug Bracewell bowled Nathan Lyon to complete New Zealand’s first Test victory in Australia since 1985, the New Zealand players wandered out of the Bellerive Oval dressing rooms and made their way to the pitch. The captain Ross Taylor was carrying an esky, or to use the New Zealand term, a chilly-bin, full of drinks.Several black caps were askew on heads. Some men were still in their whites, others had changed into the black training gear. A few were barefoot; Jesse Ryder settled for socks without shoes. They huddled together and let out a chant that was as boisterous as it was unintelligible. Drinks were sprayed, photos were taken, and they all took a few moments to let their historic achievement sink in.”It was a big night,” the batsman Martin Guptill told ESPNcricinfo on Tuesday. “It’s 26 years since we’ve beaten Australia over here so we have cause to celebrate. It’s definitely the highlight of my career so far. It’ll be in the memory banks for a long time.”By Tuesday afternoon, when the Test would have still been going had it lasted five days, the players based on the South Island had already flown out of Hobart. The Northern Island men were remaining for an extra night. They were still getting their heads around what they had accomplished. One of the men who stayed on was Daniel Vettori, who was a late withdrawal from the match due to a hamstring injury. When the final wicket fell, Vettori was standing in the doorway of the change rooms clapping and cheering, but he didn’t run out on the field for fear of exacerbating his injury.”He hasn’t won a Test against Australia,” Guptill said of Vettori. “It was mixed emotions for him that he wasn’t playing, but for him to be there when we took that final wicket was fantastic. He was ecstatic and enjoyed the celebrations as well.”It almost wasn’t so. Australia’s No.11, Lyon, joined David Warner at the crease with 42 runs required for a home victory. A couple of lbw reviews went against New Zealand and the target edged closer and closer. When it reached single figures, there were plenty of nerves among the New Zealand players.”That was one of the most intense feelings you could ever have,” Guptill said. “When Dougie bowled Nathan Lyon for that last wicket it was just massive relief. You saw the way we were jumping around in the middle that we really wanted it and we worked hard to get it. I think we deserved it.”It was a little bit [nerve-wracking] but we backed our bowlers to take the wickets. Dougie and Timmy [Southee] bowled fantastic spells and really put pressure on. We were lucky enough to keep Dave Warner off strike for long enough periods to take that last wicket.”Dougie bowled unbelievably well. For a young lad to do that in his third Test, and against Australia, is pretty remarkable. Everyone is very proud of him and he’ll certainly have a long career for New Zealand ahead of him.”Bracewell finished the match with 9 for 60, the best Test figures by a New Zealand player in five years, but he needed help from the fielders. After New Zealand put down four catches in the Gabba Test, it was clear that batting and fielding were the two areas they needed to improve in to challenge Australia in Hobart. They didn’t put down any genuine chances at Bellerive Oval. Guptill snared four catches in the match, including Phillip Hughes at second slip in both innings, taking to four from four the amount of dismissals that read Hughes, caught Guptill bowled Martin in the series.”He loves bowling to left-handers and gets that swing away,” Guptill said of Martin. “You know you’re always in the game in the slips with him bowling to left-handers. Myself, Ross, Jesse and Reece [Young] behind the wicket were always in the game when Hughes was on strike.”The win, New Zealand’s first in Australia in 26 years and first against Australia since 1993, cannot help but fill Taylor’s side with confidence. The players return home to Twenty20 cricket, with the HRV Cup scheduled over the next few weeks, but when they face Zimbabwe and South Africa in Tests later in the summer, they will draw on their Hobart success as inspiration.”The guys showed a lot of fight and a lot of heart yesterday,” Guptill said. “If we can take that into each Test match that we play then we’re going to get better as a side and we’re going to get the results that we want.”

Vini Jr chama Felipe Melo de 'paizão', nega briga e diz: 'Me dá conselhos'

Ele é meu paizão, sempre me dá conselhos.

Battling Yorkshire downed by Middlesex

Scorecard
A fourth-wicket stand of 111 between Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance followed by some remarkable hitting from Jonny Bairstow brought about a dramatic change in fortunes for Yorkshire in their CB40 Group A match at Headingley, but they still went down by six wickets to new leaders Middlesex. After barely playing a shot in anger in struggling to 53 for 3 off 16 overs, Yorkshire then blasted their way to 196 for 7 off the next 15 in a game reduced to 31 overs a side because of rain. Middlesex were equal to the task, however, and they eased their way to their target with an over to spare, Paul Stirling and Chris Rogers racking up half-centuries.Put in to bat, Yorkshire lost a wicket in the first over when Joe Sayers edged Cory Collymore to second slip where Neil Dexter deflected the ball to first slip and it was caught at the second attempt by Dawid Malan.Captain Andrew Gale glanced Collymore for four and Lyth drove Steven Finn over long-off for another boundary but runs remained hard to come by and Yorkshire were in big trouble when Gale top-edged a pull for Steven Crook to hold a return catch and Anthony McGrath was run out by Tim Murtagh’s direct hit.Even when Ballance joined Lyth there was no immediate improvement and there were ironic cheers from the small crowd as Ballance struck Murtagh for four to end a spell of 11 overs without a boundary. Suddenly, Ballance sprang to life by pulling Finn for six in an over which cost 17 and brought the batsman his first one-day half-century for Yorkshire.Crook took up even greater punishment in the next over which conceded 22 with both batsmen clearing the rope. The 100 stand arrived off 83 balls and Lyth then brought up his own 50 before Ballance was caught on the square leg boundary by Scott Newman off Dexter for 71 from 53 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes.Lyth was also held in the deep in the next over from Collymore, his 52 coming off 73 balls with three fours and a six, but the most dramatic hitting came in a furious late assault from Bairstow. He blasted Dexter over long on for six and in the final over from Collymore he smashed three consecutive sixes, all to different parts of the ground. In attempting a fourth he was sensationally caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Crooks who slipped at the last second and grabbed the ball while on the seat of his pants. There were 27 runs in the over, plus the wicket, and Bairstow’s 33 was scored off 15 balls with four sixes.Yorkshire were denied an early success when McGrath put down Malan at second slip and the signs looked ominous as Newman lifted Richard Pyrah over mid-wicket for six.The openers had put on 59 inside 12 overs before they were parted by Ben Sanderson who was lofted to Ryan Sidebottom at wide mid-on by Newman for 33 and it became 64 for 2 when Malan’s reverse sweep hit the back of the bat and was neatly held behind the stumps by Bairstow.Unfortunately for Yorkshire, they could not capitalise on these dismissals and Stirling and Rogers gradually put Middlesex in command with some fluent batting that brought each of them their half-centuries in a three figure stand. Shortly before going to his 50, Rogers survived a legside stumping chance against Pyrah but by this time Yorkshire were already looking a beaten side. The stand closed on 116 in 13 overs, Stirling being bowled by Sidebottom for an excellent 57 from 37 balls with five fours and a six, and Rogers soon followed for 51, slicing Ajmal Shahzad to Sidebottom after receiving 44 balls and hitting six boundaries. Dexter and Jamie Dalrymple came together at 182 for4 in the 27th over and saw Middlesex over the line without any further alarms.

Amit Bhandari retires at 32

Amit Bhandari, the Delhi seamer, has announced his retirement from first-class cricket at the age of 32. Bhandari, who played two one-day internationals for India, has not been picked in the Delhi squad since being dropped in 2008.Bhandari, who made his first-class debut in the 1997-98 season, played in 95 first-class matches for Delhi, and became only the second Delhi bowler after Madan Lal to go past 300 wickets. He was called up to the national team in 2000 but got smashed for 75 runs in his 10 overs in his debut one-day international. He didn’t play for the national side after that till 2004, when he took 3 for 31 against Zimbabwe, and still rues the fact he didn’t play more international cricket.”I sat on the bench for 32 matches,” Bhandari said. “None of the coaches or captains ever told me that why I didn’t play enough despite taking lots of wickets. They talked about my lack of pace but then how many in India are tearaway fast bowlers?”Though opportunities at the India level weren’t too forthcoming, Bhandari enjoyed a successful career with Delhi and also played under Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. “Amit was a bowler any captain could count on for making the breakthroughs,” Sehwag said of Bhandari. “He could bowl with precision and was easily one of the best I had seen. Seam was his strong point and he could adapt to conditions easily He was a superb fielder too, inside and outside the circle. It is sad he could not play more than two matches for India.” Gambhir, who captained Bhandari in Delhi’s successful Ranji Trophy campaign in 2008, said he used Bhadari’s inputs regularly. “His experience was priceless for the team in that season. He was an asset,” Gambhir said.Bhandari now wants to get involved in coaching and believes he can contribute to developing young Indian fast bowlers. “I would like to do all the NCA level coaching starting from this year. I would definitely like to get involved in active coaching. There are lot of subtle things about pace bowling that I still don’t know. Getting involved in active coaching would give me a chance to pass on some knowledge to the younger generations.”
