Pundit says Rangers won’t sign Oli McBurnie for £15 from Sheff Utd

Dean Windass thinks that the Scottish Premiership is Oli McBurnie’s sort of level, but doesn’t believe he’s a Steven Gerrard type of player.

Despite representing Scotland at international level, the Sheffield United striker has never kicked a ball north of the border.

But the 24-year-old has emerged as a target for Rangers despite scoring just once in 24 Premier League appearances for the Blades last season.

In fact, the boyhood Rangers fan has only found the just seven times in 65 outings since his move from Swansea two years ago and has been strongly linked with a move away from Bramall Lane following their relegation.

Sheffield United signed McBurnie for around £20m in 2019, but reports believe that Gerrard’s men could pinch him for significantly less – especially with just two years left on his Blades contract.

But despite the cut-price, Windass told The Transfer Tavern that he can’t see a move to Ibrox materialising:

“I can’t see him being a Steven Gerrard type of player. Not technically the greatest player in the world. Scottish Premiership is his level, but he’s not a Steven Gerrard type of player.”

Having failed to prove himself as a Premier League player, Rangers would be an excellent move for McBurnie, especially with the prospect of playing in the Champions League.

But his goal record since arriving at Bramall Lane isn’t exactly inspiring, so that could force Gerrard to look elsewhere.

Wolves: Is this Bruno Lage’s starting XI?

With Nuno Espirito Santo no longer the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fosun and Jeff Shi are busy trying to find a replacement.

It’s thought that Bruno Lage is the frontrunner, with the Jorge Mendes client believed to be in negotiations with Wolves.

If he does agree terms at Molineux, it would be an interesting appointment for a number of reasons. His phenomenal work with Ruben Dias and Fabio Silva proves that he knows how to develop a young player, so it could be game-changing for the young talents coming through the academy at Compton if he is hired.

Lage may face an uphill task in the transfer market, with Wolves required to sell some of their best players before they can afford to spend on new recruits.

With that in mind, how could the Portuguese’s starting XI look if he takes over at Molineux? Here’s our fun prediction…

With Ruben Neves linked with a £35m departure, we’re tipping the midfielder to take his leave when the window opens.

We also think that, in order to fund new recruits, Wolves could sell Adama Traore. They’re in negotiations to extend the Spaniard’s deal in the Midlands but are yet to reach an agreement.

If those two are sold, it will give the Old Gold a wonderful opportunity to spend.

Replacing Neves in midfield is Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha, a player Wolves have been tracking for a year now. He could set the Old Gold back a fee of £35m.

With Willian Jose heading back to Real Sociedad following the conclusion of his loan deal, we anticipate Lage and Fosun to sign a new striker.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

They have been linked with Carlos Vinicius, who played under Lage at Benfica, but we believe Ivan Toney would be the better addition. Brentford are seeking a fee of £30m in order to relinquish the grasp on their star striker.

In scoring 32 goals for the Bees this season, he’s a player on whom plenty of Premier League clubs – including Wolves – have had a keen eye.

Two new wingers could arrive, with the £10.8m-rated Arnaut Danjuma of Bournemouth linked with a switch and Goncalo Guedes – a player for whom Wolves are willing to put €20m (£17.2m) on the table – heading to Molineux.

Other permanent additions arrive in the form of on-loan duo Vitinha and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Wolves possess the option to buy the former for €16m (£14m), while the latter’s option stands at around the €15m (£13m) mark.

All in all, that would see Wolves spend a colossal £110m. It’s not completely out of the equation, with a number of players, including Neves, Traore and Raul Jimenez all linked with exits from Molineux.

West Ham: GSB played blinder over Diangana

West Ham’s controversial decision to offload Grady Diangana last summer is looking better and better as every week passes.

After a successful loan spell at promotion-winning West Brom during the 2019/20 campaign, many at the London Stadium expected the 23-year-old winger to contend for a place in David Moyes’ first team.

But the Iron’s ownership group, GSB, had other ideas as the temptation of £18m was far too much to refuse.

This decision was met with fury from fans as well as their skipper, Mark Noble.

Supporters were seen protesting following a defeat to Newcastle United earlier in the season whilst the veteran midfielder tweeted he was “gutted, angry and sad.”

Fast-forward to now and it seems as if David Sullivan and co played an absolute blinder, especially in getting so much for him.

Now valued at just €15m (£13m), Diangana has struggled to have much of an impact in the Premier League, where the Baggies are facing an instant return to the Championship.

The 5 foot 11 dynamo has only played 16 times this term, scoring just once but it’s evident that he’s just not favoured by former Hammers boss Sam Allardyce as he’s played just 63 minutes of league action since the turn of the year, failing to contribute a goal or an assist since September, via Transfermarkt.

At this point, you could say West Ham were lucky to get as much as they did for him. In the second flight, he bagged eight goals and registered seven assists, with many plaudits coming his way.

Sky Sports’ EFL podcast ran an episode highlighting ‘future stars’ in the division, in which Diangana featured alongside the likes of Joe Rodon, who has gone onto feature in Spurs’ first-team, and Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford.

The 23-year-old was described as an “explosive” attacker and one that is a “total nightmare” to defend against but we’ve just not seen that lucrative form translate into the big time.

Diangana may well go onto thrive in the Championship again next season, with relegation at the Hawthorns all but confirmed, but the Irons will not rue his sale whatsoever.

He is yet to deliver and GSB have laughed their way to the bank.

Everton fans react to Romero report

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero was a reported target for Everton in the summer transfer window.

The Blues pursued a loan move for the Argentine on deadline day but United held out for a loan fee of £8m and the deal was scuppered (via The Athletic).

Everton subsequently turned their attentions to Roma’s Robin Olsen, who arrived as competition for Jordan Pickford.

Romero still has sights set on working with Ancelotti

However, this proposed transfer may not be dead in the water. According to the Daily Mail, Romero remains hopeful of a move to Goodison Park come the end of the season.

Significantly, the 34-year-old will be out of contract by then, meaning that United can no longer stand in his way.

The Daily Mail also claimed that there is interest from Romero’s homeland, with Boca Juniors and River Plate potentially readying competing offers.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed the news, and there was mixed reaction from Everton supporters. Some no longer saw the sense in the move, while others were still keen on it.

Spurs can get Mourinho’s new Ramos in Milenkovic

Tottenham could potentially sign Jose Mourinho’s new Sergio Ramos by bringing in Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Spurs are after the Serbia international, and are keen on bringing him to the Premier League.

An update was delivered on their pursuit of the 6 foot 4 powerhouse by Italian publication CalcioMercato, who claim that Mourinho’s side, along with fellow Premier League giants Liverpool, have reached out to Milenkovic’s agents over a potential move.

The report adds that Manchester United also remain in the equation for his signature, and that Fiorentina also hold out hope they can tie him down to a new deal.

Mourinho’s new Ramos?

Throughout his illustrious managerial career, Mourinho has worked with some of the world’s best, not least Sergio Ramos in his time at Real Madrid.

The Spain international was one of the cornerstones of Madrid’s success in the early 2010s under Mourinho’s leadership, playing 137 times for him – the second-most he’s played for any manager, only behind current Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane.

Ramos was his leader on and off the pitch, and enjoyed some of his peak years under Mourinho’s management – he was named in FIFA’s World XI for three years in a row during the pair’s time at the Bernabeu.

Speaking back in 2012, the current Spurs boss remarked: “When Sergio is at his best, he gives me all that a defender has to give: security in defence, quality bringing the ball out, strength and set pieces, leadership. When he is in shape, he is one of the best.”

And in Milenkovic, Daniel Levy could unearth something incredibly similar. The Serbian is an absolute powerhouse in the centre of defence, averaging 1.5 tackles and 1.3 interceptions in Serie A this season – both stats in the top five among Fiorentina’s entire squad.

The £25.2m-rated titan has already earned rave reviews for his abilities and potential, being described as someone who is “fearless” and is a “beast”. Milenkovic has shown he could also develop into the leader Ramos is right now, having captained Fiorentina on a couple of occasions already this season, despite only being 23.

When Mourinho joined Madrid as manager in May 2010, Ramos was only 24 and was still trying to make his mark on world football. Milenkovic is in that similar age profile, and under the Spurs boss’ guidance, could develop into a superstar just like the Spaniard did.

Meanwhile, Spurs played a blinder by selling this man for £17m…

Predicted Spurs XI vs Wolfsberger - team & injury news

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action a day earlier than expected as they welcome Austrian outfit Wolfsberger AC to north London for the second leg of their Europa League Round of 32 clash this evening.

Jose Mourinho’s men have won just two of their last eight matches, including the 4-1 whitewash in the first-leg of this encounter, so despite the result being a mere formality, the Portuguese will surely want to see a decent performance.

Indeed, the 58-year-old has already revealed that he is likely to name “a very similar” lineup to the one that demolished tonight’s opposition in Hungary a week ago.

He has also revealed that Ben Davies will take the armband, while Toby Aldwereireld will start, so how will the rest of the XI look? Here’s what we are predicting…

There could be as many as eight changes to the side that tasted defeat to local rivals West Ham on Sunday afternoon, as Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Lucas Moura all remain.

It is the Englishman who gets the nod as Alderweireld’s partner over Davinson Sanchez, with Joe Rodon ineligible to feature in the Europa League.

Davies, as mentioned above, will come back in to replace Sergio Reguilon whilst between the sticks, back-up shot-stopper Joe Hart may be given his first run-out since the Wycombe FA cup win.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele are in line to receive a rest, as is Heung-min Son and Harry Kane ahead of an important Premier League fixture with Burnley on Sunday – all four will be needed to turn around their domestic fortunes, more so than here.

So, as a result, we may see Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko partner up at the base of midfield once again with Moura being deployed in the no.10 role.

That will allow Gareth Bale to start, having made such an encouraging impact against the Hammers from the bench at the weekend – he assisted the Brazilian’s sole consolation goal, and that duo could continue to deliver tonight.

Whilst on the left flank, we’re expecting Steven Bergwijn to be granted his first start since the Everton defeat over £80k-per-week Erik Lamela, who is axed after a string of poor performances.

Carlos Vinicius is also in contention to lead the line without Kane.

This game will come too soon for Serge Aurier and Giovani Lo Celso as the pair have only just returned to training this week following their respective injuries.

Mourinho has also revealed that four academy prospects will be involved on the bench – record-breaker Dane Scarlett, Dilan Markanday, Marcus Lavinier and Nile John – they could all feature should Spurs have put this tie away by the hour mark.

The Evening Standard also claim Dennis Cirkin, Jamie Bowden and Alfie Devine are among those in contention, too.

AND in other news, Better than Dier: Levy could land Spurs a massive UPGRADE in £22.5m-rated “machine”…
