Partab Ramchand25-Oct-2002Thirsting for revenge for the shock defeat sustained in the World Cupin England in the summer, the West Indies came over to India in1983-84 with a definite plan – to mow India down with an incessantdose of pace bowling. That they succeeded in their mission is borneout by the results – a 3-0 victory in the six-match Test series and aclean sweep of all the five one-day internationals.

Gavaskar despite having to endure the rare sight of Marshall knockingthe bat out of his hands with a super-fast delivery at Kanpur, thehumiliation of some low scores and a couple of ducks , includingfalling to the first ball of a Test match for the second time, recovered to tally 505 runs in the series.

The West Indies were very much the top team in world cricket in theeighties and they came to India in the midst of their world record -going 27 Tests without defeat. They were indeed a formidable side, probably the strongest ever from the Caribbean to visit India.
© CricInfoThe batting started with Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes andcontinued with Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd and Larry Gomes. In JeffDujon, they had arguably the best wicket-keeper batsman in West Indiancricket history. And this was backed up by a menacing quintet of fastbowlers in Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts WinstonDavis and Wayne Daniel.Earlier in the year, West Indies had beaten India 2-0 in a five-matchseries at home. And any hopes that India would do better at home weresquashed by West Indies winning the first Test by an innings and 83runs just after lunch on the fourth day. It was a meek surrender bythe Indians and a quick demolition job by the visitors, and but forthe odd match or two or some sporadic gallant batting and bowlingperformances by the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar andKapil Dev, the stage was set for the rest of the series.Even as the West Indies were on the rampage in the Tests, it was hopedthat India would at least do well in the one-day games. But this was aWest Indian side that had come with certain objectives. And armed tothe teeth, they wasted little time in working out their strategy toperfection.First the batsmen performed according to reputation. Lloyd (2),Greenidge and Richards got hundreds while Dujon, the best player ofspin bowling in the side, came up with some timely knocks. Such washis improvement that after starting the series at No 7, he was by theend of the contest, walking out at No 5, ahead of Lloyd. And whilethere was no really big total – the highest was 454 compiled in thefirst Test – the batting never really disappointed. They gave enoughruns for the bowlers to work on.The pacemen, headed by Marshall, time and again ripped through theIndian batting. Marshall was easily the player of the series. Hisawesome pace and bounce proved to be disconcerting for the leadingIndian batsmen and he even caused problems for Gavaskar. He finishedthe series with 33 wickets and his comrade-in-arms Holding was notvery far behind, with 30 wickets. All in all, there little doubt atthe end of the series that India had lost to a far superior all-roundside, shrewdly led by the benign figure of Lloyd. The Indians might have finished on the losing side but they did havetheir few moments in the sunshine. The batting in the three Tests atNew Delhi, Bombay and Madras, all of which were drawn, was of a highorder, symbolised by totals of 464, 463 and 451 for eight declared.Unfortunately at the other end of the pendulum were totals of 164, 103and 90 at Kanpur, Ahmedabad and Calcutta.Gavaskar despite having to endure the rare sight of Marshall knockingthe bat out of his hands with a super-fast delivery at Kanpur, thehumiliation of some low scores and a couple of ducks , includingfalling to the first ball of a Test match for the second time, recovered to tally 505 runs in the series.During it, he set numerous records passing Geoff Boycott’s aggregateand becoming the top run-getter in Tests, equaling and then surpassingDon Bradman’s long-standing record of 29 hundreds, becoming the firstto score either 13 hundreds or three double centuries against WestIndies. And his score of 236 not out in the final Test at Madras wasthe highest score for India in Test cricket, surpassing another longstanding record standing in the name of Vinoo Mankad, who got 231against New Zealand in 1955-56, also at Madras but at the Corporationstadium.Vengsarkar got two hundreds while Roger Binny, Ravi Shastri and SyedKirmani came up with timely contributions. But the batting lackedconsistency and this was responsible for the three heavy defeats, theothers being sustained at Ahmedabad (by 138 runs) and Calcutta (by aninnings and 46 runs), both with more than a day to spare.Another problem was the bowling. It hinged too much on Kapil Dev andthe captain performed heroically to take 29 wickets. But he receivedlittle support, though, Maninder Singh, at the end of only his firstyear in international cricket, showed some promise. Kapil had a spellof nine for 83 in the second innings at Ahmedabad, making him thethird Indian bowler after Subhash Gupte and Jasu Patel to take ninewickets in a Test.

Second DivisionThe division’s closest match was played out at Chelmsford where, try as they might, Leicestershire just couldn’t consign Essex to defeat despite having them nine down. Ravi Bopara’s 87 and James Foster’s unbeaten 88 from 212 balls held them together long enough to cling on for the draw. After the tumble of wickets on the first day, the draw was the least expected result, but the pitch flattened out considerably and was taking a lot of turn on the final day, as evidenced by Claude Henderson’s figures of 4 for 68. Even so, it took some determined efforts from Essex who were seven down at tea. But Foster played out the last over from Dillon du Preez, well-supported by David Masters (5 off 87 balls) and Tony Palladino (2 off 53 balls) before Danish Kaneria survived the last eleven minutes with his senior partner. Kaneria offered a chance, spooning Henderson to mid-off but the ball evaded Garnett Kruger’s high dive to his right.Northamptonshire spared Glamorgan no mercy in notching their first win of the season, an emphatic affair at Swansea. Glamorgan followed on 256 behind and were soon in the soup at 5 for 21 as Northamptonshire’s opening pair David Lucas and Johan van der Wath scythed the top five down for single figures. Mark Wallace, James Harris and Robert Croft painstakingly rebuilt as they each reached double figures, the only batsmen to do so this innings. But they were only staving off the inevitable and Andrew Hall nipped in with three to do the rest mid-afternoon. Although rain wiped out much of the second day, there was still enough time for the visitors to complete the job.Warwickshire and Middlesex ended with a predictable draw at Edgbaston, after four batsmen contributed fifties for the visitors. Billy Godleman moved on to 87, Owais Shah converted his overnight 46 to 50, then Eoin Morgan and Shaun Udal batted into the evening as Middlesex built an insurmountable lead.

First DivisionJoe Denly’s century allowed Kent to dream of a romantic finish at Tunbridge Wells after they had lost four wickets for 8 runs. But Somerset emerged winners by 20 runs after Steffan Jones’ systematic destruction of Kent’s line-up, taking 5 for 63. Resuming five down with 137 still required, Kent made some progress before the loss of Geraint Jones triggered the slide. At 176 for 9, the writing appeared on the wall for Kent, who required 271, but Denly stood firm with Martin Saggers, together adding 74 before Charl Willoughby trapped Denly in front for 149. Willoughby ended with 4 for 67.Solid batting from Surrey on the final day forced stalemate with Yorkshire at The Oval, with an early end to proceedings as Surrey declared on 299 for 6 to close the game. Usman Afzaal’s century ensured the result, and his third-wicket stand of 104 with Murtaza Hussain, who made 56, ended any hopes Yorkshire may have had after Deon Kruis’ early dismissal of Scott Newman left the home side 70 for 3.

Sri Lanka in full swing at SSC

Charlie Austin04-Aug-2002With three `papara’ bands in full swing under the corrugated tin roofs atthe Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka celebrated the return of Aravinda deSilva and Muttiah Muralitharan to their one-day side, cruising to acomfortable five-wicket win against Bangladesh in the opening game of athree-match series. The carnival atmosphere off the field – a stark change to the Test series, which was played out in front of empty stands – produced some entertainingafternoon batting by Sri Lanka’s batsmen. With Bangladesh scoring a respectable, if not competitive, 226, MarvanAtapattu guided the host team home after blazing cameos from SanathJayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara.Jayasuriya launched a withering assault in the early overs, thrashing 40from 32 balls, including six fours and a massive short arm jab for six thatsailed onto the grassed bank in front of the scoreboard. When he departed, caught at short mid-wicket off a miscued pull, Sangakkaracarried on the attack, scorching to 29 from 23 balls with six fours.Sri Lanka rattled up their 100 in 14.2 overs, allowing them to amble towardsvictory after Sangakkara was caught at mid-wicket, slog-sweeping mediumpacer Khaled Mahmud. The right-hander Atapattu, now playing as an opener after the axing ofRomesh Kaluwitharana, eased himself past fifty for the 41st time in hiscareer. He looked set for a century but was run out for 83 after a direct hit fromManjural Islam, the wicket bringing veteran Aravinda de Silva (1) to thecrease for the first time in one and a half years in a One-DayInternational.De Silva’s arrival was greeted with a cheering ovation from the crowd, butthey were only able to savour one sweep shot before the 36-year-old beforehe was dubiously adjudged to have feathered a catch behind.Arnold guided Sri Lanka past the winning post, finishing with 29 from 56balls.Earlier in the day, Bangladesh, looking for only their fourth victory inone-day cricket, had boldly elected to bat first in the morning on a pitchthat traditionally offers the fast bowlers encouragement during the firsthour. But the decision appeared justified as the openers, Al Sahariar and MohammadAshraful, comfortably negotiated the early overs, adding 38 for the firstwicket, as left-armer Chaminda Vaas failed to swing the ball. However, in the tenth over, Al Sahariar chased a wide swinging delivery fromDilhara Fernando to be caught behind for 25, precipitating a top ordercollapse that saw four wickets fall for 38 runs.Habibul Bashar (2) dragged a short ball from Chamila Gamage on to his stumpsand Alok Kapali gifted Mahela Jayawardene a simple catch at first slip togive debutante all-rounder Hasantha Fernando his first wicket ininternational cricket. With Ashraful caught at mid-off for 36, attempting an over-ambitious loftedstraight drive against Muttiah Muralitharan, Bangladesh were precariouslyplaced on 86 for four. But gutsy, workman-like half centuries from Tushar Imran (61) and skipperKhaled Mahmud (54) ensured the visitors their highest score against SriLanka. The pair added 90 for the fifth wicket, forcing Jayasuriya to chop andchange his bowlers, seven of whom were used during the innings. In the end it was Muralitharan, playing his first one-day match sincedislocating his shoulder at Sharjah last April, who broke through as Imrantop edged an attempted sweep. The wicket drew Muralitharan level with Australian spinner Shane Warne on278 wickets, fourth equal highest wicket-taker in ODI history.Sri Lanka re-grouped after the fall of Imran, restricting Bangladesh to 55runs in the final 10 overs, as wickets fell too frequently for an all-outassault.In the morning, Sri Lanka had awarded two new caps to fast bowler ChamilaGamage and medium pace all-rounder Hasantha Fernando.Bangladesh, meanwhile, drafted in all three of their one-day specialists -former captain Naimur Rahman, left arm spinner Mohammad Raffique andall-rounder Khaled Mahmud – as they packed their side with all-rounders.

Robin Smith back to lead Hampshire for the last time

Robin Smith will lead out the Hampshire side for the last time this Sunday, as he takes his place for only the second time this season in a Norwich Union League Division Two game, when the Northamptonshire Steelbacks visit the Rose Bowl.Smith, who announced he was standing down from the captaincy position after five years in the job, heads the 13-man squad for the final game of a disappointing 2002 season, regaining the reigns from Will Kendall, for what is likely to be an emotional match for the 39-year-old.There is no place in the squad for the released Jason Laney, who had been a regular fixture of the side for the past two months, so John Crawley replaces him from the last NUL game at Hove a fortnight ago.A win for Hampshire will see them assured of a home tie in next seasons’ 2003 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, as the bottom four sides in NUL2 meet each other instead of a Minor County.Hampshire squad: Neil Johnson, Will Kendall, John Crawley, Robin Smith (capt), John Francis, James Adams, Nic Pothas (w-k), Dimitri Mascarenhas, Lawrence Prittipaul, James Hamblin, Shaun Udal, Alan Mullally, James Tomlinson.

Celtic should revive Josh Maja interest

Back in 2018, Celtic arguably spent the best £9m that’s departed their pockets for many a year.

Odsonne Edouard joined the Hoops and instantly became a fan favourite, leading the club to domestic glory on a regular basis courtesy of his goals.

The Frenchman won the league on three consecutive occasions and has now taken his tally in green and white to an impressive 83 strikes.

He has been the Premiership’s top scorer three years on the trot and even when Celtic faltered this term, Edouard scored 22 goals.

Unfortunately, there is a huge threat that he heads for the exit door this summer. A £15m move to Leicester initially looked to be on the cards but the Foxes have instead made a move for RB Salzburg forward Patson Daka.

He still attracts the eyes of West Ham while Arsenal have also been interested in recent months.

Seeing him exit would be a disastrous start to Ange Postecoglou’s reign at Paradise. He is the club’s most important player and a replacement will be needed.

Celtic have been linked with players from Japan but they should also look towards France and Josh Maja.

The former Sunderland striker currently plays for Bordeaux and enjoyed a profitable loan spell with Fulham last term, scoring three times in the back half of the season. However, he’s returned to France where his side are looking to sell him according to the print edition of the Mirror (27/06/21).

Celtic were interested in the 22-year-old back in 2019 when Brendan Rodgers was still in charge but they ultimately didn’t make a move.

Though, with the forward now proving himself in the Premier League, it feels as good a time as any to finally bring Maja to Glasgow.

In short, he’d be an ideal replacement for Edouard. He can hold the ball up, run in behind and most importantly, score goals.

Maja has 39 strikes in his senior career to date but hasn’t quite found his feet in French football. Before his move across the channel, he scored 14 in 24 for Sunderland throughout 2018/19.

When he first broke onto the scene, Rangers striker Jermain Defoe was in awe of his talents.

Speaking to Sunderland club media, the veteran commented: “Josh is a quick thinker and if you’re that fast upstairs you don’t need anything else.”

Defoe continued: “When he trained with the first team he showed such great awareness – he knew when to pass it, had a great touch – and although he’s not got electric pace, he’s two steps ahead of everyone which means he’s got an immediate advantage.”

The forward concluded: “The gift Josh has is rare and if he builds on it, the sky’s the limit.”

Maja clearly has an excellent football brain and within those split decisions it takes to make a smart call, it separates him from other players Celtic may have in mind.

Targeted by Rodgers, Postecoglou must now consider him as well.

AND in other news, Ange can fix big Celtic issue by signing £4m gem who’s been “outstanding” at Euro 2020…

Crystal Palace must avoid Eddie Howe

Crystal Palace must avoid former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe this summer as they continue to search for Roy Hodgson’s successor.

What’s the story?

Former Hull City striker Dean Windass recently claimed the 43-year-old tactician would be an ideal fit for the Eagles as they embark on a new chapter in their history, but the capital club should think twice before doing so.

Howe left the Cherries at the end of the 2019/20 campaign following their relegation to the Championship and was expected to take charge of Scottish giants Celtic before talks broke down, leaving him available for the Palace vacancy.

Palace must avoid

Hodgson’s decision to step down from his position in charge of the south London outfit has left them in a precarious position.

Although the former England boss brought stability to Selhurst Park throughout his four-year stay, he’s left the first-team playing squad in a far from healthy position.

Over a dozen stars are set to become free agents at the end of the month, and injuries to promising youngsters Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson have made the task facing Hodgson’s replacement an extremely daunting one.

Therefore, opting for an experienced manager on this occasion is the logical route to go down, meaning chairman Steve Parish must avoid Howe on this occassion.

While Howe impressed for large spells of his tenure on the south coast, he ultimately oversaw a relegation despite spending relatively large sums of money during Bournemouth’s time in the Premier League.

Big-money signings such as Jordan Ibe, Dominic Solanke and Jefferson Lerma failed to produce the results required to maintain their top-flight status and raised some questions over Howe’s managerial ability.

Palace need someone who can oversee a major squad overhaul on a shoestring budget, unfortunately for the Englishman, he has failed to show he can do that so far in his career.

At one point it looked as though ex-Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival at Selhurst Park was imminent until some last-minute demands saw that proposed move collapse.

And shifting their focus from Nuno to Howe would represent quite the compromise from the Palace hierarchy.

In his nine years in the dugout, the Portuguese boss has recorded a highly respectable 47.83% win rate, whereas Howe has managed a modest 42.51%.

Although these figures don’t automatically make Nuno a better manager than Howe, they are indicative of the varying levels of success the two men have had throughout their careers and maybe enough for Parish to opt for an older head.

And, in other news…Parish masterstroke: Palace must swoop for £9m-rated prodigy, he’s an “absolute tank”

Barry Fry drops Toney to West Ham claim

Peterborough of Director of Football Barry Fry has told Football FanCast that West Ham weren’t willing to pay his asking-price for Ivan Toney last summer.

On the back of scoring 26 goals with Posh, the striker was a man in demand, with several Premier League clubs interested in taking a risk on the 25-year-old, who’d never previously played above League One level.

And West Ham, who were on the back of narrowly avoiding relegation, were one of those sides.

The Hammers had Michail Antonio in their ranks, but with record signing Sebastien Haller having only scored seven Premier League goals during his debut season at the London Stadium, David Moyes was looking to add to his striking ranks.

But Fry revealed that he priced the West Ham owners out of a deal, and Toney eventually moved to the Championship, scoring 32 goals, including a crucial penalty in the play-offs against Bournemouth last weekend.

Fry exclusively told Football FanCast what went down with the West Ham owners:

“I spoke to David Sullivan before I sold him to Brentford, because I thought Ivan Toney would be ideal for West Ham.

“But David didn’t agree and thought I wanted too much money and didn’t think he would have the impact in the Championship.”
