IPL to become 10-team tournament from 2022

BCCI invites bids for two new franchises; six cities in the fray

Nagraj Gollapudi31-Aug-2021It’s now official. The IPL will be a 10-team tournament from the 2022 season, with the BCCI inviting bids for the two new franchises on Tuesday. Interested bidders will need to buy the tender document by October 5, after which the IPL will carry out a technical evaluation before selling the two franchises.ESPNcricinfo understands that the minimum bid price for each of the new franchises will be INR 2000 crore (USD 270 million approx) and that there are six cities in the fray including Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Guwahati and Cuttack. It is learned that successful bidders will own the new franchises for perpetuity. While it announced the launch of the bidding process on Tuesday, the BCCI did not reveal details such as whether bids would be made via sealed envelope or an e-auction, and by when it would unveil the two new franchises. The BCCI pointed out that any interested bidder is allowed to pick more than one bid document, which costs INR 10 lakhs, but would be allowed to own only one franchise. While the decision to add two new franchises was finalised by the IPL Governing Council on Monday, the BCCI has been contemplating the move for the last two years. At its annual general meeting in December 2020, the BCCI got the approval to do so from its members – the state associations. How will having 10 teams affect the IPL on the field?
The 2022 edition will not be the first time the IPL will comprise 10 teams – that already happened a decade ago after the Pune Warriors and the Kochi Tuskers were added to the original roster of eight franchises in 2011. It has been confirmed that the tournament format will follow the 2011 model, which scrapped the simple home-and-away format, and included a total of 74 matches. In the 2011 edition, the 10 teams were split into two loose groups, and the tournament comprised 70 league matches and four playoff games, with all the teams ranked in one composite league table. During the league phase, every team played the same number of league matches, which was 14.Each team played the other four in their group both home and away (eight matches), four of the teams in the other group once each (four matches, either home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the composition of the groups as well as who played whom across the groups once and twice. The last time more than eight teams played in the IPL was in 2013, when nine teams took part and played a total of 76 matches. The last time the BCCI conducted bidding for new franchises was in 2015 when the Rising Pune Supergiants and the Gujarat Lions replaced the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, who were both suspended for two years from the IPL.The Sanjeev Goenka-owned New Rising consortium picked Pune as the base for the Supergiants while the Delhi-based mobile phone manufacturer Intex chose Rajkot as the Lions’ home venue. New Rising and Intex had bid INR -16 and -10 crore respectively as per the reverse-bidding plan the BCCI devised to get two new franchises temporarily for two seasons. Under the reverse bidding, bidders were encouraged to pit a sum lower than the base price of INR 40 crore set by the BCCI. This meant the BCCI would pay a maximum of INR 40 crore from its central revenue pool to the new owner. The investor who bid the lowest price would eventually bag the ownership rights.

Surgery 'worst fear' for Swann

Graeme Swann has admitted that the thought of needing surgery on his troublesome right elbow is his ‘worst fear’

Graeme Swann has admitted that the thought of needing surgery on his troublesome right elbow is his “worst fear” and he will try anything to get through the rest of his career without another operation.Swann has had to manage the problem, which involves floating bone fragments very near the nerve in his elbow, for a number of years. He has been rested for some of England’s one-day internationals this season and had an injection shortly before the South Africa Test series began, although he doubts its effectiveness. Memories of when he last underwent surgery in 2009 – which he described as “horrendous” – mean he will trying anything to avoid a second procedure.”That is my worst fear at the minute,” he said. “When I had surgery before it was ten times the problem it is now. There are bits of floating bone in there which are too close to the nerve. I had all the other pieces taken out but the surgeon said he had to leave these. He said they may cause you a bit of grief now and then. It is little things like if I hold the phone too long with my right hand I can’t use my arm for a couple of minutes – it just goes dead.”During the one-day series – the Aussies or West Indies I can’t remember – it was really starting to ache. The break we had since really helped. I don’t think the jab has done anything to be honest. I reckon it was more a hope-for-the-best jab because nothing else seemed to work. The rest from bowling for a couple of weeks did it good. There was an option to play in the Championship game this week that’s going on at Trent Bridge but I think if I start doing that then I will be in a lot of trouble.”If anything was going to test the well-being of Swann’s elbow it would have been last week’s opening Test against South Africa where he toiled through 52 wicketless overs as South Africa piled up 637 for 2. He insisted he felt no ill-effects from two days in the field although he knows that the only way to manage the problem in the longer term could be to miss further matches.”After the Oval Test my body felt strangely buoyant, quite youthful,” he said. “After bowling 52 fruitless overs I should have really wanted to hang the boots up there I suppose. It was very strange. A spinner normally bowls 50 overs per Test anyway. I just got them out of the way in one fell swoop.”If it keeps deteriorating I will undoubtedly have to miss some cricket. But it’s not really deteriorated in the last three or four weeks, it feels better than it did. I’ll have to cross that bridge when I come to it. I’m hoping not because realistically, if I look at the age I am and what have you, if I can just get to the end of my playing days and my arm falls off the next day sort of thing, I’m quite happy with that. I don’t want to have another operation if I can help it because it’s horrendous.”In terms of the immediate future, Swann is unconcerned about his lack of recent success in Test cricket. In four matches this season he has claimed just six wickets at 72.16 and while he had more of a holding role against West Indies he was expected to be a significant threat at The Oval.”I was actually very happy with it,” he said of his performance. “It felt very blunt by the end of it as you tend to when you have bowled 35 overs for no wicket. On the fourth morning it was very unpleasant bowling. I took too long to adjust to Graeme Smith to go a little bit wider – I should have done that earlier – but had he been given lbw, it was one of those that was umpire’s call, we could have had a new man in and we could have bowled them out for 300.”Anyone who bowls knows that at some point you’re going to have spells when you don’t take wickets,” he added. “If you let that get you down it is going to be the end of your career. I still bowl against people I’ve bowled at a lot before and I always back myself. My consistency’s always getting better. I’m always working on new things, new ways of getting people out – mentally, not physically with new balls and things.”Swann, though, would not be overly perturbed if he had to wait a little longer for a return to wicket-taking form so long as England can find a way back into the series. “You’ve got a new game, a new wicket – I might not even bowl. I’m fully expecting to get handed the ball just before teatime when they’re seven down and there’s a left-hander in. I’m an eternal optimist.”Investec, the specialist bank and asset manager, is the title sponsor of Test match cricket in England. Du Plessis, Chris Morris get South Africa T20 call-up

Faf du Plessis, the middle order batsman, has been has been named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the unofficial Twenty20 tri-series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe in June

Firdose Moonda30-May-2012Faf du Plessis, the middle order batsman, has been named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the unofficial Twenty20 tri-series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe in June, while Chris Morris, the Highveld Lions allrounder, has received a maiden call-up.The squad will be led by Johan Botha. AB de Villiers, allrounder Jacques Kallis and the fast-bowling pair of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel have been rested because all four played extensively during the recent IPL and will likely be needed in all three formats for the upcoming series against England.Du Plessis has played 21 ODIs for South Africa but has never been part of the Twenty20 squad. He staked a claim for a place in the shortest format after a successful stint with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2012. Du Plessis, who opened the batting and scored three half-centuries, held the orange cap for being the leading scorer in the tournament at one stage, although he finished 13th on the batting charts. In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, du Plessis said, “If I could pick where to bat in 20-over cricket, I would say I’d like to open. It suits my style of batting because I am someone who can hit the ball over the top and along the ground, and I’ve learned when to hold back and when to go for it.”Du Plessis has been tipped to open the batting with world-record holder Richard Levi, although that would probably come at the expense of limited-overs vice-captain Hashim Amla. While du Plessis’ inclusion in the national squad was expected, Morris’ came as a complete surprise to everyone, including himself.”One of my former provincial coaches, Lawrence Mahatlane called me up to say congratulations and I wasn’t sure what he was talking about,” Morris, who has also been picked in the South Africa A side to play Sri Lanka A, told ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t know what to do yet. I’m not sure if I should jump and down or what. I was just happy to be playing franchise cricket and I didn’t even think about the national side at all. I’ve come such a long way in such a short time, that definitely wasn’t in my thoughts.”Morris has just completed his first full season as a franchise cricketer, having been spotted by former Highveld Lions coach Gordon Parsons in Centurion in 2009.South Africa’s 15-man squad

Johan Botha (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Marchant de Lange, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Dane Vilas (wk)

“Gordon saw me there and asked me if I wanted to go to trials at the Lions and I did,” he said. “Before that I was playing club cricket in Pretoria and to be honest, I didn’t really set the scene alight. But then I got offered to go to the Lions academy and the rest is history. The Lions have taught me everything I know about my game.”After playing in the amateur competition for a season, Morris was contracted to the Lions for the 2011-12 season. He scored two half-centuries and took 23 wickets at an average of 26.00 in the first-class competition and was the leading bowler overall in the MiWay T20 competition, with 21 wickets. It was his performances in the shortest format that earned him his national call-up.”He was also very effective as a lower order hitter and played a very significant role in getting the Lions to the final,” Cricket South Africa’s selection convenor, Andrew Hudson, said.Morris opened the bowling and stepped up to bowl at the death as well, two roles he has enjoyed. “I wanted that kind of responsibility because when I have that, then I focus more,” Morris said. While Morris has played club cricket in England before, he has never travelled as part of a tour, except at school, and has also never been to Zimbabwe. Most of the national squad are relative strangers to him as he has only met them as opponents occasionally in the past.”I’m really excited and really looking forward to it,” he said. “The more I can talk to people, the more I am going to learn.”The rest of the squad includes players who have been given opportunity in the past. Both Farhaan Behardien and Dane Vilas featured in South Africa’s XI for a one-off Twenty20 against India in March. Behardien has been a consistent performer for the Titans in the last few seasons and will bat in the middle-order, while Dane Vilas will don the wicketkeeping gloves.Botha continues as captain, after he also led the team in the match against India, an indication that he remains part of South Africa’s World Twenty20 plans. He will be released from his national contract after the ICC event in September to captain South Australia and will not participate in the South African domestic season.

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jan-2012Jimmy Adams, the former West Indies batsman, has been appointed the new head coach at Kent. Guptill, McCullum set up T20 sweep

The brothers McCullum ensured that New Zealand sealed their two-match Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe with a convincing win in the second game

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Oct-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrendon McCullum set up New Zealand’s big total with a rapid half-century•AFPThe brothers McCullum ensured that New Zealand sealed their two-match Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe with a convincing win in the second game. Brendon scored 64 off 37 balls and Nathan took three key wickets with his offspin to wreck Zimbabwe’s hope of evening the series. The hosts were more competitive than they had been in the previous game; after an ordinary performance in the field they batted bravely, but the target was too tall for them.Chris Mpofu started well, with five, precise, back-of-a-length deliveries but indiscipline crept in when his sixth delivery was a legside wide that ended up costing five runs. Kyle Jarvis also had an impressive initial burst with his first ball resulting in a confident appeal for lbw against McCullum. The ball looked destined for middle and leg stump but the umpire did not think so. McCullum was on two at the time and went on to capitalise on his good fortune. The floodgates opened when he clipped Jarvis over mid-wicket for six in the same over.Another six, off an Mpofu slower ball took New Zealand to 28 without loss when rain interrupted play after three overs. The 20-minute break shaved four overs off the game, reducing it to 18 overs a side. It should also have given Zimbabwe’s bowlers enough time to rethink their strategies, but it served only to motivate McCullum and Guptill, who returned to the crease breathing fire. The better they batted, the worse Zimbabwe bowled. Jarvis could not find the right length; Prosper Utseya tossed it up too much and even Ray Price was guilty of dropping it too short. McCullum took a particular liking to Utseya, smacking him for two sixes in the ninth over to get to the brink of his half-century. His fifty came up, surprisingly, with a single off Elton Chigumbura.Just when it looked as though the rest of New Zealand’s batsmen might not get a chance to occupy the crease, Zimbabwe got a breakthrough with the first ball of Jarvis’ third over. McCullum tried the paddle scoop and missed. But the dismissal was a false dawn. Even as it sent one powerhitter back to the dressing room, it brought another one out. Jesse Ryder played carefully for the first few balls he was at the crease and then pulled Utseya over square leg for four to announce his arrival. With McCullum gone, Guptill took over and reached a fifty of his own, without taking many risks. He pummelled Mpofu in the 16th over, before falling to a big shot off Jarvis.Although the stats do not reflect it, Zimbabwe’s bowlers produced a number of good deliveries. Unfortunately for them, they also sent down at least one hittable delivery in every over. Mpofu finally got it right in the final over, when he bowled full and straight and was able to squeeze the New Zealand batsmen, but it was too little, too late.Zimbabwe will take heart from their chase, which started in promising fashion, was quickly pegged back with early two wickets but then took flight again. With moisture still hanging in the air, Hamilton Masakadza was undone by seam movement from Doug Bracewell and was caught behind. In the next over, Brendan Taylor was bowled by a slower ball from Aldridge.Instead of allowing the innings to unravel, Chamu Chibhabha and Elton Chigumbura took the fight to New Zealand. Chibhabha, a man known for his ability to hit the ball a long way in domestic cricket, tucked into debutant Graeme Aldridge, who bowled too full at first and too short later. Chigumbura dealt with changes in length and speed in the same fashion, by taking dispatching the deliveries over the boundary and Chibhabha did well to attack the spinners. Their third-wicket partnership of 57 threatened to give Zimbabwe an unlikely chance at victory but Nathan McCullum put an end to any thoughts of a win.He got rid of Chigumbura after reacting speedily to take a good return catch and dismissed Charles Coventry for a duck in the same fashion. Chibhabha continued to fight hard but, after reaching his highest score in this format, was undone by the two brothers: he was stumped by Brendon off Nathan. With Chibhabha gone, Zimbabwe’s chase fizzled out and came to an ignominious end with four wickets falling in four balls in the 17th over, two of them run-outs.

SLC angry over allegation against players

A potential dispute involving two leading cricketers, Sri Lanka Cricket and a state-owned channel appears to have been doused

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2011A potential dispute involving two leading cricketers, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and a state-owned channel appears to have been doused after the channel issued a clarification over remarks made by an anchor following Sri Lanka’s 11-run loss to Pakistan on Saturday.A commentary on Sunday on Sri Lanka’s state TV network, ITN, said a businessman had bet roughly $18,000 on a Pakistan victory and, according to an SLC release, implied “that our players might have been involved in match-fixing.”SLC condemned the comments and said it would be taking up the matter “with the relevant authorities of this channel, based on the fact that this channel has brought great distress to two of our national cricketers.” After Sri Lanka’s nine-wicket win over Kenya on Tuesday, a board official said that the matter would be discussed with lawyers and board authorities.Soon after the SLC release, ITN issued its own clarification. “It must be emphasised that our intention was purely not to embarrass” the players. “We wish to express our deep concern if the contents of the programme had hurt both of them or any other party. Today’s “Vimasuma” [the name of the show] was based on making further clarifications with regard to the earlier programme.”Sri Lanka’s team manager Anura Tennekoon denied there would be any inquiry from the SLC or from the International Cricket Council (ICC). “Knowing both [the players], we feel there is no necessity to investigate the matter and, as far as the ICC has concerned, they have the right to investigate but so far they have not brought anything on this,” Tennekoon said. “But we will discuss the matter with our lawyer as well.”

-Eu pretendo me firmar na equipe.
