South Africa retain winning Test squad for Zimbabwe

South Africa have retained their victorious Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare starting August 9

South Africa have retained their victorious Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare starting August 9. South Africa regained their No.1 Test ranking after three months when they beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in the two-Test series that concluded on Monday. It was Hashim Amla’s first Test series as full-time captain, following the retirement of Graeme Smith. South Africa will play a three-match bilateral ODI series with Zimbabwe following the Test and stay back for a tri-series, also involving Australia.”The Proteas have earned a vote of confidence,” said Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson. “We will be naming the ODI squad for the three-match series against Zimbabwe next week and will give consideration to resting a couple of players.”We will, however, be sending our full-strength ODI squad for the following triangular series against Zimbabwe and Australia.”South Africa last played a Test series in Zimbabwe back in 2001.

'Follow England's lead on anti-corruption'

Cricket boards around the world would do well to emulate the example of the English game in the fight against corruption, according to Angus Porter, the head of the players’ union in England. While recent revelations relating to Lou Vincent might have painted an unflattering picture of the extent of corruption in county cricket, Porter, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, remains confident that methods used to combat the issue in England should be used as a template in the rest of the world.”The Vincent revelations are largely historical,” Porter told ESPNcricinfo. “They may only have come into the public domain in the last few days, but the ECB and PCA had known about them for some time.”While they are a reminder that there is no room for complacency in the battle against corruption, we wouldn’t want people to use them to express outdated concerns about the English game. Much has been achieved in the last few years and the recent news relates largely to a period before many preventative measures had come into place.”There are, in Porter’s estimation, six elements to the fight against corruption. Crucially, given recent suggestions about the restructuring of the Anti-Corruption Unit, they require an independent investigative and disciplinary body, as well as national player associations and the full co-operation of the national cricket boards. That is not an environment offered in India and Pakistan, for example, who do not recognise player associations.Porter’s six-point plan:1) Unity with independence
“It is incredibly important that all stake-holders act together,” Porter says. “So in England we have seen the ECB and PCA work together to find the best way to educate those involved, but also investigate and act where necessary.” But at the same time it is, he says, “essential that the independence of the investigative, reporting and disciplinary processes is maintained.” So while the ECB may fund the ACU’s work, they should not limit, interfere or attempt to influence in its work. And, as Porter points out “we need to be certain that it must not just be independent, it must be perceived as independent.”2) A distinction between the educational and investigative
In England and Wales, the PCA take on the role of educating players about the dangers of corruption and what to do should they be approached. They are not directly involved in the investigative or disciplinary aspects. “This is a particular challenge in those countries that do not have a players’ association to help with the education function,” Porter says. “It is very hard to go from the classroom with a player to then investigating them.”3) Start young
The prevention process now starts long before players sign professional terms with a first-class county. Anti-corruption education is given to academy players and ingrained in them as they develop through the system. Ignorance cannot be an excuse.4) An amnesty
In 2012, an amnesty was declared in England in which players could report historic information. While little of significance came to light during that process, it did provide a last opportunity for those who might have been guilty to come clean and offered them no excuses should information come to light at a later date. “Other countries should follow the lead of the game in England and Wales and declare an amnesty,” Porter says. “While our amnesty did not reveal a huge amount of new information, it did clear the conscience of a few people and made it very clear that a line had been drawn. There could be no excuse if anything came to light after that date.”5) Tie-in education with registration of players
It has become mandatory for players to have completed their anti-corruption training before they can be registered to play for a county. “Players cannot take the field of play until they have done so,” Porter explains. At times, with some overseas signings, this has only happened a couple of hours before a game, but there have been no exceptions. Not only does the process ensure that the players have been educated, it ensures they cannot use a defence of ignorance should they have been found to have engaged in corrupt practices.”Cricket in England is, we believe, the only sport in the world that has hard-wired education into registration in this way,” Porter says. “Again, I believe other countries would do well to follow this example.”6) Allow the prevention and investigation methods to be intelligence based
Over recent days, England players Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara have made comments in the media suggesting that preventative measures taken in county cricket were not as robust as those taken in international cricket. Notably, both called for the ban on communication devices – mobile phones and the like – in international cricket to be replicated in the domestic game. But, says, Porter that may not address the real issue.”While we are delighted to see the obvious desire of the England players to see that everything possible should be done to combat corruption, it is important we think these things through,” he says. “It may be that there is a place to restrict the use of communication devices in televised games, but while members of the public are still able to access dressing rooms during those games, it would seem to be pointless to introduce such a ban without taking other measures first.”The danger is that such action will give people a warm feeling of contentment that they are doing the right thing, but that it will actually be no use at all. The evidence we have is that fixing usually takes place away from the ground and not on match days.”Porter also points out that most players involved in the England squads were not party to the pre-season anti-corruption programmes at the counties and might not be fully aware of the extent of the help now offered at domestic level.”I think James Anderson was the only England player available for the pre-season education,” Porter explained. “But the England team’s anti-corruption runs parallel to the county teams’ so no-one slips through the net. Anderson would have seen Mervyn Westfield give some incredibly powerful testimony on the mistakes he made.”Confidence in the integrity of the game is paramount. We have achieved a great deal in the last few years and, while recent news reminds us that there is no room for complacency, it would be wrong for people to judge the integrity of the English game on historic cases.”

Bangladesh not repaying faith of adoring fans – Kumble

Former India captain Anil Kumble believes that Bangladesh have not done justice to the level of support they receive at home

Former India captain Anil Kumble believes that Bangladesh have not done justice to the level of support they receive at home. The World Twenty20 hosts lost to two Associate nations this month, first to Afghanistan in the Asia Cup and then to Hong Kong in the first round of the World T20 last weekend. On Tuesday, they begin their Super 10s campaign with a game against defending champions West Indies.”They’ve played at the highest level for a good number of years but the worrying thing for me is they have yet to arrive as a top-class international team,” Kumble wrote in his column. “It is bewildering when you consider the immense passion for the game in the country. The game is played at a reasonable level throughout the country but the national team is still to repay the faith of its adoring public.”Having played nine international matches in Bangladesh between 1998 and 2007, Kumble has seen the home side’s wide following first-hand. He believes that if Bangladesh were to beat West Indies, despite West Indies’ own shaky form, it would be considered a shock result. “They are in their own backyard with the conditions more than suited to their players. Yet there is that unfortunate feeling one gets that should the Windies stumble, it would be seen more as an upset win for the hosts rather than a victory which shouldn’t raise any eyebrows,” he said.Kumble compared the team to Sri Lanka in their early days, but said Bangladesh are still to arrive as a major force.Recently, Bangladesh whitewashed New Zealand in a home ODI series for the second time in three years, while also beating West Indies in ODIs in 2012. They have defeated each Test-playing nation at least once in ODIs, though they haven’t beaten Pakistan since 1999. In Test cricket, Bangladesh recently drew a series against New Zealand and a Test against Sri Lanka. But since that draw in Chittagong in early February, they lost two T20s and seven ODIs in a row, before beating Afghanistan and Nepal in the World T20’s opening round. Then, they lost to Hong Kong.”They [Bangladesh] have scored some good wins in the ODI version but not consistently enough to be taken seriously for a big team,” Kumble said. “With a tournament of this stature having arrived at their doorstep, it’s a fantastic opportunity for Bangladesh to make people look at them in a different light.”

Afghanistan look to seal World Cup spot

Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan is looking for a direct qualification for the 2015 World Cup when his team takes on Kenya on Wednesday and Friday in what are must-win matches for them to qualify

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Sep-2013

V for Victory: Afghanistan coach is confident of a direct qualification for the 2015 World Cup•Associated Press

Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan has targeted winning both matches against Kenya this week in the World Cricket League (WCL), victories which will guarantee direct qualification to the 2015 World Cup.Afghanistan are currently No. 4 in the WCL points table behind Ireland, UAE and Netherlands, with only the top two automatically progressing to the World Cup. While Ireland have already qualified, UAE and Netherlands have 18 points each after playing all their matches. Two wins for Afghanistan, currently on 15 points, will lift them to second place and seal a World Cup spot. If Afghanistan fail to do so, they will head to New Zealand for a second chance to qualify.”It is very important for us to qualify directly, otherwise there would be extra pressure on the boys to go to New Zealand for another round of qualification,” Khan said. “We want to qualify directly and start preparing for the World Cup.”Khan stated that though the players have been under pressure throughout the tournament, they are now used to it. “Since I joined about 18 months ago, we knew that we had to win all remaining matches to qualify directly for the World Cup,” he said. “The pressure has been there since the beginning and the boys are used to it.”If Afghanistan are unable to win both the matches, UAE at No. 2 will qualify automatically along with Ireland. UAE won their last two matches, on Friday and Sunday, dismissing Namibia for 39 and 80 respectively, which also caused Netherlands’ elimination. The WCL teams that don’t progress directly to the World Cup will get a second chance in next year’s qualifiers in New Zealand. They will play with Hong Kong, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Uganda for the other two World Cup spots.

Aziz, Anwar star as UAE beat Canada again

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShaiman Anwar made 57 after his century in the previous match•Eddie Norfolk

A four-wicket haul by offspinner Nasir Aziz and a fighting half-century from Shaiman Anwar helped UAE secure their second WCL Championship win over Canada in King City, Ontario. The victory strengthened UAE’s position at fourth place on the points table, giving them a three-point lead over Afghanistan.UAE’s bowlers, led by Aziz, vindicated their captain Khurram Khan’s decision to bowl first, as Canada’s in-form opener Ruvindu Gunasekera was dismissed by Shadeep Silva for 9. Usman Limbada, who scored a half-century in the last match, was pushed up to No 3 and he stitched together a steady 50-run stand with Hiral Patel, who fell soon after scoring his third List A fifty. The experienced Ashish Bagai joined Limbada at the crease but the pair struggled, adding 33 in 80 balls. Canada’s scoring-rate dropped further after Limbada was bowled by Aziz in his first over, the 30th of the innings. The next six overs produced just 10 runs and Damodar Daesrath succumbed to the pressure in the batting Powerplay, holing out to midwicket to give Aziz his second wicket. Canada managed 11 in the Powerplay and Aziz and Silva struck regularly in the last 10 overs to restrict the hosts to 179 for 9. Aziz, playing his eighth List A match, finished with his best figures of 4 for 20.In reply, UAE raced to 21 in 2.4 overs, but suffered a couple of early jolts as opener Abdul Shakoor and Khurram departed. Swapnil Patil tried to get a partnership going with Arshad Ali but fell to Junaid Siddiqui. A 58-run stand in nearly 19 overs between Arshad and Anwar anchored the chase. However, Rizwan Cheema struck, dismissing Arshad, Rohan Mustafa and Mohammad Azam in consecutive overs to leave UAE stuttering at 137 for 6 in the 37th over. Anwar played a tenacious 93-ball 57, following his unbeaten hundred two days ago, and almost guided UAE home before Cheema removed him in the 45th over. With 14 required and two wickets left, Canada were back in the game. However, Aziz and Silva steered UAE to victory in the 49th over.

Smith takes charge for Surrey despite Pepper defiance

New Zealander takes three-for before Patterson leads hosts’ reply with half-century

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay23-May-2025Surrey dismissed Essex for 217 as events on day one at the Kia Oval followed a familiar pattern.Having won the toss, the champions fielded first on a well-grassed surface and despite Michael Pepper’s 75 they bowled Essex out in two sessions.Australian left-hander Kurtis Patterson led the reply with 51 as Surrey reached 94 for three at stumps, 123 behind.Pepper provided much of the resistance in front of a crowd of 5,861 and helped Essex’s last three wickets add 71 while at the start of the day Surrey didn’t use the new ball particularly well. But Surrey have got themselves into a familiar position and will try to bat into the third day before putting Essex back under pressure in their second innings. There had been the promise of a different story unfolding in the first half hour when Dean Elgar and Paul Walter helped themselves to ten boundaries in the opening eight overs as they posted a half-century stand with few alarms against some unusually indifferent new-ball bowling by Dan Worrall and Nathan Smith.

But when Sam Curran, who was making his first Championship appearance of the season, replaced Worrall at the Vauxhall End he broke through with his second ball, which darted off the seam and Elgar edged it to second slip. From 50 without loss Essex slipped to 95 for four as the Surrey seamers profited from bowling a better length. Walter played well for his 38 but was one of three wickets to fall in 7.4 overs for seven runs as the champions tightened the screw before lunch.Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes snapped up a simple opportunity when Walter poked at Jordan Clark’s outswinger but there was nothing ordinary about his next intervention when he dived in front of first slip to remove Charlie Allison after Smith had switched ends – a fine way for Foakes to claim his 450th catch in first-class cricket.Smith had a second wicket before lunch and Foakes a third catch after skipper Tom Westley was surprised by extra bounce and Essex would have been in further strife had Jamie Overton, like Curran playing his first Championship game of the season, not dropped straightforward catches at slip to reprieve first Pepper and then Matt Critchley off successive deliveries. Overton took himself out of the cordon but Pepper apart, Essex failed to make the most of their good fortune.Critchley, aiming to leg, was beaten by Tom Lawes’ late inswing and Foakes had his fourth catch – and Worrall his first wicket – when Noah Thain followed an away swinger. Simon Harmer was lbw unwisely offering no shot when Curran switched ends. But from 146 for seven Pepper led a tail-end revival, first with Shane Snater with whom he added 51 in 65 balls. Snater contributed 28 before edging to second slip in Overton’s third over but Pepper brought up Essex’s 200 by driving Overton handsomely over long-on for six while adding another 24 with Sri Lankan Kasun Rajitha. Rajitha eventually played on to Smith and Pepper holed out to deep mid-wicket for a season’s best 75 from 94 balls with nine fours.Burns was caught at slip aiming an expansive drive at Jamie Porter and Surrey suffered a setback when Patterson was squared up by Porter shortly after the Australian left-hander had reached an attractive half-century. Nightwatchman Lawes fell in the penultimate over but Surrey are still well placed.

McGrath and Turner join Hall of Fame

Two of Australia’s finest fast bowlers, Glenn McGrath and Charlie Turner, will become the newest additions to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame on Monday

Two of Australia’s finest fast bowlers, Glenn McGrath and Charlie Turner, will become the newest additions to the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame on Monday. Turner and McGrath represented Australia a century apart but will together be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Allan Border Medal ceremony in Melbourne, bringing the number of inductees to 37.The nomination of McGrath follows last year’s induction of his long-time team-mate Shane Warne, who bowed out from Test cricket alongside McGrath during the Sydney Ashes Test in the first week of 2007. The inaugural winner of the Allan Border Medal in 2000, McGrath took 563 Test wickets at 21.64 as well as 381 wickets at 22.02 in one-day internationals, and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in December last year.”I’m very humbled but it’s a huge honour,” McGrath said. “I grew up in the country watching cricket and loving cricket from a young age and the thought of one day playing for Australia was such a dream.”To achieve that, but then to be lucky enough to have played for as long as I did in an amazing era, and now to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is a huge honour. To be alongside some of my heroes growing up, guys like Dennis Lillee, Rod Marsh, the Chappells, there are some incredible names there. To think that my name is alongside those is pretty amazing.”Just as McGrath was the pre-eminent Australian fast bowler of his era, Turner was Australia’s leading fast man during his international career, which spanned the years 1887 to 1895. Turner, known as the “Terror”, was the natural successor to Fred Spofforth, whose final Test was Turner’s debut, and in 17 Tests Turner collected 101 wickets at the average of 16.53.He remains the equal second-fastest man to the 100-wicket milestone in Tests; among Australians, only Clarrie Grimmett can match Turner’s record of reaching the mark in 17 matches. Turner, who played for New South Wales, also had a remarkable first-class record of 993 wickets at 14.25.”Glenn McGrath and Charlie Turner were each the outstanding Australian fast bowler of their era,” David Crow, the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame chairman, said. “Despite careers more than a century apart, they had much in common. Tall, right-arm fast bowlers, both men hailed from country New South Wales. Their superb records demonstrate the dominance each had over opposition batsmen over a prolonged period.”The Hall of Fame began in 1996 with the induction of ten players and a further 27 have been added in the years since.Hall of Fame inductees Warwick Armstrong, Richie Benaud, John Blackham, Allan Border, Sir Donald Bradman, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Alan Davidson, George Giffen, Clarrie Grimmett, Neil Harvey, Lindsay Hassett, Ian Healy, Clem Hill, Bill Lawry, Dennis Lillee, Ray Lindwall, Charles Macartney, Rod Marsh, Stan McCabe, Glenn McGrath, Graham McKenzie, Keith Miller, Arthur Morris, Monty Noble, Bill O’Reilly, Bill Ponsford, Bob Simpson, Fred Spofforth, Mark Taylor, Hugh Trumble, Victor Trumper, Charlie Turner, Doug Walters, Shane Warne, Steve Waugh, Bill Woodfull.
