Leeds Transfer Roundup: Cahill update, Leeds want Casilla gone, Interest in Sawyers

[ad_pod ]

Thursday’s Leeds transfer roundup included news on a Dutch defender, a big contract demand from a star midfielder and a blow in the pursuit of a Premier League winger. Today’s edition features turnind down a Champions League winner, the potential departure of a goalkeeper and interest in a Championship rival’s captain.

Leeds to turn down Cahill

According to Friday’s print edition of The Mirror (12/07, page 67 – via HITC), Leeds are set to turn down the chance to sign former Chelsea center-back Gary Cahill. The Whites had reportedly been given the opportunity to snap up the 33-year-old, but he does “not fit the bill”.

Whites want Casilla to leave

Leeds are looking to sell former Real Madrid shot-stopper Kiko Casilla this summer according to Football Insider. Not only are the Elland Road outfit willing to listen to offers for the 6 foot 3 shot-stopper, but they are actively looking for a summer suitor.

Interest in Sawyers

The Daily Record is reporting that Marcelo Bielsa and co are interested in taking Brentford captain Romaine Sawyers to Yorkshire. Scottish Premier League champions Celtic are also looking at the 27-year-old. As it stands, Leeds have not made an official bid.

Celtic are in an incredibly strong position when it comes to Kieran Tierney’s future

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Pundit and football agent Allan Preston insists Celtic hold all the cards when it comes to a potential Kieran Tierney exit this summer, speaking on Saturday afternoon’s edition of BBC Sportsound.

What’s he said?

Preston works for the football agency that represents the Scotland international and is a regular on the BBC Radio Scotland show, so when he appeared on Saturday’s panel one of the topics that came up was inevitably the talented left-back.

Refuting any suggestion that Tierney could be looking to force a move away from Celtic Park, Preston’s comments gave an insight into the current situation, amid bids from English Premier League sides Arsenal.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

Speaking at length on the programme, Preston explained:

“It is all down to Celtic. If they get a price that they believe is the correct value for Kieran Tierney he could possibly be on his way. No one has hit that price yet.

“I know Kieran really well, I had some food with him the other day, he is such an unassuming young man. He is wealthy at the moment but he doesn’t possess a watch, he isn’t into material things like this.

“He still hangs about his pals from when he was a youngster, he sponsors his local pub team where his pals play and he’s not into his designed gear or anything like that.

“As the guys say he loves Celtic, he absolutely loves Celtic.”

Celtic’s negotiating position

Having already rejected two bids from Arsenal, it’s clear that the Hoops aren’t looking to make a quick buck when it comes to Tierney’s departure.

He is one of the key assets in Neil Lennon’s first-team squad and still just 22 years of age with four years left on his current contract, there is absolutely no rush to sell.

Preston’s comments also make it clear that Tierney won’t be taking the huff anytime soon and handing in a transfer request or anything as dramatic as that.

That love for the club along with the business realities of any potential deal means that any side looking to sign the left-back will have to be serious and weigh in on the full £25m valuation Celtic have placed on his shoulders, before the Hoops even entertain the notion of him leaving.

From Definitely In to Phased Out: How England could line up at Euro 2020

[long_read]

Just as night follows day, so too does an international tournament follow an international tournament.

Fresh from finishing third at the UEFA Nations League, England will be in action at Euro 2020 next summer, provided they can qualify from a group also comprising Czech Republic, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Montenegro. They have won the two games they have played so far.

But how could they line up at the showpiece next summer, which is set to take place across Europe and culminate at Wembley?

Football FanCast takes a look at those who will almost certainly be included in the squad, barring injury, those who need a good season to be included, and those who are more than likely to be watching from the sofa…

[snack_break title=”DEFINITELY IN”]

Jordan Pickford – England’s No.1, he arguably outperforms himself when he is playing for his country as opposed to his form for Everton. Made a brilliant penalty save against Colombia in the World Cup and followed it by scoring one and saving one in the Nations League third-place shootout with Switzerland.

Trent Alexander Arnold – The best right-back currently playing in Europe. He has been a revelation for Liverpool and was perhaps the reason they reached the Champions League final, thanks to his quick thinking against Barcelona. A decent defender and an excellent crosser of the ball, he should be one of the first names on the teamsheet at the tournament.

Harry Maguire – “Slabhead”. Maguire became a cult hero during the 2018 World Cup and is perhaps the most straightforward defender of England’s current pool. A threat in the opposition box – he scored at the World Cup against Sweden – he is almost certain to be in Southgate’s first XI at Euro 2020.

Jordan Henderson – Liverpool’s captain, Henderson is key to the way his sides play. He may not be the most spectacular midfielder but he’s phenomenal at driving the team forward. He’ll be in the squad and most likely on the pitch at Euro 2020.

Dele Alli – Frustrating at times, Alli is blessed with genuinely world-class talent. He simply needs to add it all up in one sum. If he can add consistency to his game, he’ll be one of England’s most potent attacking weapons at the tournament. He’ll be hoping to improve in 2019/20 after a mixed season at club level but he’ll be in the squad.

Jadon Sancho – England’s most exciting youngster, Sancho is already being touted as a £100m player. A revelation at Borussia Dortmund, he could destroy opposition defences for England and could be vital to the Three Lions’ chances of glory.

Raheem Sterling – Manchester City’s best player in one of the best seasons in their history in 2018/19, it would take a collapse of Devon Loch proportions for him to miss out on a spot in the squad. He captained England against the Netherlands; he’ll be in the XI for the first game of Euro 2020, fitness permitting.

Harry Kane – England’s captain and one of the best strikers in world football. If he stays fit, he’s likely to win the Golden Boot next summer.

Soccer Football – World Cup – Group G – England vs Panama – Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia – June 24, 2018 England’s Kyle Walker during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Carlos Barria

Harry Winks – England’s best ball-playing midfielder, Winks should be the player Southgate is building around. Fitness issues can trouble him but if he enjoys an injury-free season, he’ll be on the plane.

Tom Heaton – Burnley’s first-choice goalkeeper, he’s a model of consistency. Provided Sean Dyche keeps his faith in him, he’ll be an able deputy to Pickford.

Kyle Walker – Walker has seen his right-back spot robbed by Alexander-Arnold but he’s still an elite right-back and it would be a shock if he was left out of the squad.

Joe Gomez – An excellent centre-back with all the tools needed to be an elite defender, Gomez needs to play regularly. He made 16 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in 2018/19, having struggled with ankle injuries. If he stays fit and proves his worth, he’ll be in the squad.

John Stones – This would have been a dead cert, but then he did what he did against the Netherlands. One feels that he can over-complicate things at times and England need a more assured distributor alongside Maguire. He’ll need to recover his form at Manchester City to guarantee a place in the squad.

Ben Chilwell – Chilwell has emerged as England’s best left-back during his time at Leicester City. Danny Rose is breathing down his neck but his lung-busting runs forward and seemingly unflappable composure give him the edge on the Tottenham Hotspur man. It remains to be seen if that form is a purple patch, however.

Danny Rose – England will need two left-backs at the tournament and Rose, while perhaps not first-choice, is unlikely to be left out altogether.

Declan Rice – A recent England debutant, Rice has broken out as England’s best defensive midfielder in the past few months. If he keeps his form up and stays fit, he’ll almost definitely be selected.

Jesse Lingard – Lingard has the attributes needed to unlock most opposition defences but it remains to be seen if he will be trusted to dislodge the likes of Alli, Sterling and Sancho from England’s exciting forward line. Likely a bench player at the tournament, it’s nevertheless likely he’ll be in the squad.

Marcus Rashford – Kane’s understudy, this one is purely fitness permitting. Rashford has all the quality in the world but he needs to be playing regularly. If Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keeps his faith in him, and he’s fit next summer, he’ll be on the plane.

[snack_break title=”ON THE CUSP”]

Jack Butland – Having never earned his big move, Butland remains Stoke City’s goalkeeper. If he keeps his consistency, he’ll likely be the third-choice behind Pickford and Heaton. If not, he could see his spot snatched.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – He has yet to make his senior debut but it seems just a matter of time. The Crystal Palace right-back is being linked with a big move this summer and his chances of selection will surely increase if it comes off. If not, he’ll have to keep putting in the work as one of the Eagles’ best players to be noticed.

Ross Barkley – A truly gifted attacking midfielder, Barkley has been in and out of the Chelsea team under Maurizio Sarri; if he can put a run of games together and show his remarkable quality, Southgate will surely pick him. If not, he could lose his spot.

James Maddison – Maddison could be the chief beneficiary if Barkley does miss out. A brilliant midfielder with the ability to unlock defences and score from set-pieces, he would offer something different to the Chelsea man and also to Alli. The spot is there for the taking. It is down to him to make sure that Southgate can’t ignore him any longer.

Michael Keane – A more than capable centre-back, he isn’t quite as good as Maguire but he’s decent at what he does and Southgate seems to trust him, though he needs a solid season to get back into the squad.

[snack_break title=”FORM DEPENDENT”]

Chris Smalling – Manchester United’s best centre-back but, at this point, that isn’t saying much. He’s been an England regular before, winning 31 caps, but he hasn’t played for his country since 2017. Get back to previous form, though, and he’s in with a shout.

James Tarkowski – A meat and potatoes defender, if he keeps his excellent 2018/19 form up next term, he’d be a solid option for Southgate to call on. If not, there are plenty of other options in his position.

Ryan Sessegnon – He could leave Fulham this summer – Tottenham have been heavily linked – and if he thrives under Mauricio Pochettino, he could be the latest Spurs star to earn a call-up. If he stays in west London or he sits on the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, maybe not.

Jack Grealish – It remains to be seen how Grealish will adjust to Premier League football after Aston Villa’s promotion. If he continues to dazzle with his dribbling ability and eye for a pass, expect him to be under consideration for a spot in Southgate’s squad.

Adam Lallana – Lallana is something of an enigma. On form, he is one of the best attacking midfielders in the country. And yet, he so rarely seems to be on form these days. Jurgen Klopp has phased him out at Liverpool and he was not included in the squad for any of the club’s final six Premier League outings as they looked to chase down Manchester City. Perhaps he needs a move but it’s unlikely he’ll be in the England squad unless he can get back to his Southampton ways.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – Another talent with all the raw attributes needed to be an elite winger, he needs the trust of his manager. If he has the chance to thrive that he sorely deserves, he could play his way into Southgate’s plans. If he continues to sit on the bench, don’t expect him to be in the England squad next summer. A long-term injury of course doesn’t help his case.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – A player with a potent mix of intelligence of excellent positional awareness, Loftus-Cheek is the archetypal modern midfielder. He’s got the lung-busting stamina needed to play as a box-to-box midfielder but, again, he needs to be trusted. He made a total of 24 Premier League appearances in 2018/19. Repeat that next season and Southgate will have a decision to make but like his Chelsea team-mate, he’ll start 2019/20 on the sidelines.

Nathaniel Chalobah – Capped once under Southgate, Chalobah is a physical, mobile presence in the centre of midfield. He made just nine Premier League appearances in 2018/19, though, so don’t expect him to be in the squad unless games come thick and fast.

Lewis Dunk – An excellent defender playing for an unfashionable club, the Brighton & Hove Albion stalwart could make the fourth centre-back spot his own, provided his consistency carries through this season.

Alex McCarthy – The third goalkeeping spot is there for the taking. If McCarthy has a good season, he could well be in Southgate’s thinking.

Tammy Abraham – A goalscoring machine at Aston Villa, it remains to be seen if Abraham will return to Chelsea this season or go out on loan again. If he can score anywhere close to 26 goals in the Premier League, as he did in the Championship, he’ll certainly be in the squad. That, though, is a massive if.

Phil Foden – The jewel of Manchester City’s academy, will he play? It seems unlikely, what with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva blocking his path. But if he can force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans, he can do similar to Southgate.

Nathan Redmond – A revelation at Southampton under Ralph Hasenhuttl, Redmond was included in Southgate’s initial Nations League squad before it was whittled down to 23. Allying pace, finishing ability and excellent dribbling, Redmond could be something of a wildcard next summer.

James Ward-Prowse – A smart passer of the ball, the Southampton star simply hasn’t made his mark on the international game. Another tidy season could see him considered but it does feel that his time may have been and gone.

[snack_break title=”PHASED OUT”]

Soccer Football – World Cup – Semi Final – Croatia v England – Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, Russia – July 11, 2018 England’s Kieran Trippier celebrates scoring their first goal REUTERS/Darren Staples

Danny Welbeck – Injuries have robbed him of the games he needs to prove his worth. On his day, he is unlike any other forward player in the Premier League but a question mark constantly hangs over his fitness. If he can complete a full season, Southgate will have a decision to make, but it seems tragically unlikely at this stage.

Ashley Young – Ageing and far from the best option for Manchester United, he is perhaps the fourth-choice left-back for England behind Chilwell, Rose and Luke Shaw. It’d be a shock if he was in the squad, regardless of his form this season.

Kieran Trippier – He has endured a nightmare season at Spurs and continues to be linked with Napoli. Perhaps a move would bring the best out of him but he is likely to be England’s fourth-choice next summer behind Alexander-Arnold, Walker and Wan-Bissaka. What a fall from grace.

Luke Shaw – If Chilwell and Rose are in the squad, Shaw could potentially be included as a third-choice full-back but one wonders if Southgate will even bother. He’s been steady for United but that’s it. Steady doesn’t earn you an international call-up.

Callum Wilson – Outside of Kane and Rashford, there are places to be earned up front. But Wilson is somewhat injury-prone and it remains to be seen if he can stay fit. If he can, and if he can repeat this season’s tally of 15 goals in all competitions, he has a chance. Otherwise, it’s a no.

Eric Dier – A disappointing season at club level did not stop him being called up to the Nations League squad but Dier could be behind Henderson and Rice in the pecking order come next summer. Will Southgate see a need to take three defensive midfielders? If the answer is no, expect Dier to miss out.

Fabian Delph – Versatile and talented, Delph is in and out of the Manchester City team and he needs to play consistently to have any right to be called up. That just doesn’t feel very likely.

Phil Jones – Much like Smalling, Jones used to be a key part of England’s squad. He hasn’t played for his country since the World Cup – he played 90 minutes in the third-place play-off – and hasn’t been called up once in the aftermath. Sadly for Jones, England haven’t missed him.

"We love you" – Arsenal fans react to Ramsey’s message ahead of Baku Final

[ad_pod ]

When Arsenal face Chelsea in the Europa League final, Aaron Ramsey won’t be lining up for the Gunners having been ruled out by injury.

The 58-cap Welshman has delivered trophy-winning moments in his time with the Gunners, including a headed winner against the Blues in the 2017 FA Cup final.

Unai Emery’s men will have to line up without the midfielder, who’s set to join Juventus after agreeing a move to the Old Lady once his contract at Arsenal has expired, meaning he will leave the club on a free transfer in July.

Before Arsenal fans can worry about transfer plans of their own, they need to contest perhaps the club’s biggest game of the last ten years – an opportunity to win European silverware and reach Champions League football, which reports state will have a huge bearing on how Arsenal can perform in the transfer market.

Ramsey was key to Arsenal’s late season flourish, and his injury coincided with a huge collapse in results. Despite being unable to play, he’s flown out to Baku and sent his club a message to wish them good luck before the game, and of course fans were quick to respond to the departing midfielder…

Transfer Focus: Arsenal target Russian starlet Fedor Chalov

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans, if all you want to hear about is links to the latest wonderkid defender, look away now. You may already have Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but according to Sky Sports, the Gunners are in for another striker.

The young CSKA Moscow man Fedor Chalov is the striker in question, and whilst no one is doubting his credentials as an out and out goalscorer, he just isn’t what is needed at the Emirates considering their current crisis at the back.

What’s the story?

Sky Sports are linking the Gunners with a move for 21-year-old Russian Premier League Golden Boot winner Chalov.

The report claims that the Gunners are rivalled in their interest in Chalov by both Monaco and Sevilla, while also pointing out that the hitman has three years left on his deal with CSKA.

From 6-0 FA Cup final maulings to Mkhitaryan missing the the Europa League final, is football broken? Fans discuss in the video below…

Considering the youngster’s age and goalscoring record, this could prove to be a pricey deal for Unai Emery, although there’s no mention of a fee in the report.

Arsenal fans have seen him up close too, as he actually scored against them in their Europa League clash with CSKA back in the 2017/18 season.

Unneeded Quality

The first priority for Emery right now is of course his defence. In the last Premier League season, the Gunners shipped 51 goals in the 38 games, ranking 8th out of the top ten clubs, and that is not the sort of stat that gets you into the Champions League.

Emery has the firepower at his disposal to bag plenty at the other end, so bringing in a means of scoring more just doesn’t seem like a wise use of the club’s measly finances.

There’s no reason why Chalov shouldn’t sign, we just don’t think it’s a safe option to bring the Russian in until the defensive issues have been fixed first.

There is no point blowing part of the transfer budget on an inexperienced 21-year-old striker when you’ve got Shkodran Mustafi in your starting line-up, it’s really that simple.

There will be a lot of changes at Arsenal this summer and Chalov would undoubtedly be a good signing if it happened. With so many problems to fix at the other end of the pitch though, Emery has bigger fish to fry and should forget about the young Russian for now.

Matias Vecino would be a top summer signing for Tottenham

Wow, Tottenham Hotspur are in a Champions League final. You’ll probably still be celebrating that while reading this but just to read that sentence again must be nice. Milk it, ladies and gentlemen, milk it for literally all you can.

Obviously, it now seems churlish to even talk about the problems in play at the club right now after a fairly disappointing domestic campaign but, clearly, there are issues.

Indeed, Spurs are known for struggling without talisman Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son, which is something they will look to work on this summer. With that in mind, reports suggest that Tottenham will have a tasty budget to utilise during the summer period as Mauricio Pochettino may finally be entrusted to make a real difference to the club.

Clearly, he is in search of a number of top players this summer, those fitting to make Tottenham genuine contenders in every competition they play in next season.

So the March rumour linking (as per CalcioMercato) Inter Milan’s Matias Vecino in that case, makes complete sense, given the midfield quality he possesses. Vecino, who was signed for £21.6 million back in 2017 (as per Transfermarkt), will be a familiar name to Tottenham fans seeing as he scored against them in the Champions League earlier on this season.

Back then, it was suggested that Spurs were put off by the Serie A giants’ asking price but the report from the Sun recently claiming the club would have a lot more money to spend this summer might indeed change things. Who knows, really, but he’s exactly the kind of player Tottenham should be targetting.

That performance alone from Vecino may have been enough to encourage Tottenham to spend big on the 27-year-old this summer, given how much he could improve their midfield.

Whilst Moussa Sissoko has hit new heights this season, the likes of Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama have really failed to make an impact and hence could be leaving this summer. So, perhaps Vecino could be the man to line up alongside Sissoko in the middle of the park, with the perfect balance of attack and defence.

In what is bound to be a period of change for Tottenham, the capture of Matias Vecino could leave fans very happy, especially after seeing the season he has had. From the centre of midfield, he has played 37 times, scoring five goals and assisting a further four as well.

Tottenham’s engine room just needs a refresh and we can’t think of a player more suited to the project currently in play in North London.

In terms of contribution, it is clear to see that the Uruguay international could fit very nicely into Tottenham’s squad.

Spurs fans, would you back a move for Vecino? If not, why not? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Get in there! Loads of QPR fans react to appointment of Mark Warburton

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday afternoon, QPR announced that Mark Warburton will take over from caretaker boss John Eustace and the 56-year-old has a mammoth task on his hands to turn the club’s fortunes around.

The Hoops have lurched from disaster to disaster this season both on and off the pitch, although things have begun to look up in recent weeks, with the 2-1 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday a positive way to sign off for the season.

With the R’s having finished in a lowly 19th place this term, the Loftus Road faithful will be hoping that former Brentford boss Warburton can guide them to a much more respectable finish next campaign.

As another cracking Championship season draws to a close, check out the top 5 fan chants from 2018/19 in the video below…

With budget and resources likely to remain stringent, the appointment seems a smart one given the former right-back’s past successes despite similarly damning circumstances.

You can check out the best of the reaction on Twitter below, with some QPR fans “absolutely delighted” by the appointment on the whole…

Nicolas Pepe would complete Liverpool’s attack

Liverpool have been nothing short of sensational in the current campaign but this season won’t be remembered unless Jurgen Klopp manages to secure an elusive piece of silverware.

The Reds are set to take on FC Porto in the second leg of their Champions League tie later on tonight, with a two-goal advantage giving them the upper-hand.

However, it appears as if the Reds are eyeing a possible summer swoop at this moment in time, as according to Birmingham Mail (via The Kop Times), Liverpool are set to rival Wolves for the signing of Nicolas Pepe.

Indeed, the winger has been simply sensational over in France at current club LOSC Lille in the current campaign, having produced a whopping 20 goals and 14 assists in all competitions. He’s arguably one of the hottest topics in world football at this moment in time, so signing him in the summer would be brilliant for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp really would be crazy not to sign the winger as he’s already well on his way to becoming a superstar and he’s still only 23-years-old. Pepe even has more assists than both Sadio Mane (4) and Mohamed Salah (10) in the current campaign, so he could be the extra creative spark that’s been missing this season.

However, the Reds are reportedly (as per Bild, via HITC) ready to pay Julian Brandt’s £21.5 million release clause, which could put a potential deal for Nicolas Pepe in doubt.

FSG may have to pay more money to sign Pepe as he’s valued at £36 million (as per Transfermarkt), but he would definitely be worth the purchase.

Klopp should forget about signing his fellow countryman as he’s produced 13 less goals than Pepe and the same amount of assists, so it’s clear to see that the Ivory Coast international is the better option. And, he’s only one year older than Brandt so it’s not as if the German offers much more in terms of potential.

Luton Town: Hatters’ unbeaten run will end eventually, but it’s set the club for future success

A lot has happened since the 13th of October.

Manchester United have gone from laughing stock of the Premier League to underdogs for the Champions League under club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Zinedine Zidane returned to Real Madrid after Los Blancos were dumped out of Europe by Ajax, and Tottenham actually moved into their stadium after what seems like an eternity of waiting.

The 13th October is also the last time Luton Town lost a game of league football when the Hatters fell to a 3-2 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwood, sending the Tykes to third in the League One table and putting the London side 10th in the table.

Fast forward to now, and Luton are a beast the likes League One have not seen in years.

A 4-0 win against Doncaster Rovers on the weekend made it 28 games unbeaten for Mick Harford’s side and put Luton five points clear of second place Barnsley in the league table, and the Hatters are one of the favourites for automatic promotion to the Championship.

Successive promotions would cap-off a remarkable return to form for Luton, who were in non-league football as early as 2014, but for the fans the real question now is how far can this unbeaten run go on for?

28 games unbeaten is an extraordinary length to go in this era of the game, but Luton fans caught up in the fairytale must realise that one day this streak of no losing will eventually end, as most runs do.

That’s not to say the unbeaten run will signal the end of good times in Luton. If the club is able to secure promotion to the Championship 12 years away from the division it will be on the basis of the 28 games without losing.

This run has not only lifted spirits around the club and created a mythology for Luton fans that will live on for years to come, but it also raises the reputation of the Hatters around the country, meaning next season could see the team be surprise contenders in the Championship.

Luton fans, how long can this unbeaten run go on for?

Fulham: Timothy Fosu-Mensah must forget about his terrible time at Craven Cottage

Being loaned out as a youngster has become a rite of passage for Premier League players who are at the start of their careers.

With first-team football at the biggest of clubs hard to come by for the majority of teenage talents, they can find themselves being sent out to varying levels of England’s footballing pyramid depending on their abilities.

Whereas some players thrive in their new, albeit temporary surroundings, others can see their career dissipate due to a scarring spell away from their parents clubs if they let it affect them.

Unfortunately in the case of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, the latter could be applicable to his situation since joining Fulham on loan from Manchester United last summer.

The Dutch defender has experienced a torrid time at Craven Cottage this season and has been part of an outfit that has conceded a remarkable total of 70 goals in just 31 league games. His development as a player will have surely been hampered by the fact that he has played under three different managers who have all tried to implement different systems and formations.

Yet despite the fact that his footballing CV is about to include an ugly relegation from the Premier League with the Cottagers, Fosu-Mensah should not let it define him as a player as the problems he has experienced this season are relatively abnormal compared to a usual season.

The United academy graduate’s performances for Crystal Palace during the 2017/18 campaign outlined a great deal of promise for the 21-year-old and there is no reason why he cannot reach these levels again either with the Red Devils or elsewhere.

If there is one player that Fosu-Mensah could take inspiration from in the Premier League it would have to be Harry Kane. Before becoming arguably one of the world’s best strikers, the England forward experienced several difficult loan spells at the likes of Leyton Orient, Leicester City and Millwall. Yet through years of hard-work and dedication, Kane finally began to make his mark for Tottenham Hotspur and has developed into an exceptional marksman.

A single-disastrous campaign therefore for the Netherlands international should not shape what still could be a highly successful career for the defender.

What do you think Fulham fans? How well has Fosu-Mensah played this season? Is he still good enough for the Premier League? Get in touch below.
