Diedhiou can present West Brom with a new dynamic in attack

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The last couple of months have been an absolute rollercoaster for West Brom and it doesn’t look as though things will be slowing down.

After it was confirmed Dwight Gayle wouldn’t return, Albion were always going to have to be in the market for a forward but with Jay Rodriguez now looking as though he’s about to leave too, things have gone from bad to worse after failing to achieve promotion.

The appointment of Slaven Bilic and a new contract for Rekeem Harper had the potential to change the mood but after reports emerged regarding Rodriguez’s possible departure, their plans for the new campaign have taken another setback.

However, last week, the club were linked with Famara Diedhiou. The Bristol City striker scored 13 goals last term and although that is some way off the 22 Rodriguez netted in 2018/19, it could help to soften the blow.

In short, the forward can give the Baggies a completely new dynamic in attack.

Last season they relied on the more technically-gifted Gayle and Rodriguez, but Diedhiou is a different player.

The Robins striker is a more physical option, possessing phenomenal aerial prowess, standing at 6 foot 2.

Last season, he won a remarkable 5.6 aerial duels per game. To put that into context, Craig Dawson won only 4.3 for West Brom in the Championship last season which was the most of any Albion player.

In terms of their forwards, Rodriguez won the most but that was a measly 1.8 per game compared to Diedhiou’s supreme efforts.

The 26-year-old could significantly improve their ability to compete in the air and they could find themselves scoring more goals from crosses.

Nine of his 26 goals in the last two seasons have been from headers which provides plenty of evidence of how good he is in those types of situations.

In away games against Nottingham Forest and Preston last campaign, he won 12 aerial duels whilst he won a further 11 in the home fixture against the latter too.

If West Brom have desires of achieving promotion in 2019/20, they may have to take an alternative approach. Landing Diedhiou would certainly give them that and it could be game-changing in the way they attack.

£84m move for 27-year-old star is the big signing Manchester United simply have to make: Opinion

Manchester United’s summer transfer business is set to be the main focus of many press releases in the coming weeks you would imagine.

The Red Devils, led by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, are looking to rebuild following a terrible end to the season which saw plenty of question marks asked about the club yet again.

United have already allowed the likes of Ander Herrera to move on from the club, so it’s now a case of seeing just who the club can add, following on from the signing of Welsh winger Daniel James this past week.

Defence is going to be the big issue United need to resolve though, with the 54 goals conceded last season only second to West Ham in the top ten in the Premier League.

This weekend has seen the club reportedly make a massive £84m bid for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been in superb form for the Naples club over the last 12 months.

Koulibaly has been a dominant force in Serie A, with his impressive stats backing up his potential to take the Premier League by storm. Averages of 1.7 tackles per game, 1.1 interceptions per game, as well as getting in a block per game, all point to Koulibaly being the sort of defender who is nothing but all action in his work.

Speed too is something the Senegalese star brings to the table, and we have seen at the likes of Man City with the likes of Benjamin Mendy and Kyle Walker that having pace in the backline is something which can be a massive asset.

United have to make a stand this summer and propel themselves back into the limelight. While signing the likes of James is all well and good for the future, a marquee signing who can shore up the defence like Koulibaly can is just what the club needs.

Transfer Focus: Leeds’ interest in Delph surely means that Phillips is on his way

[ad_pod ]

According to reports in The Sun, Leeds United have shown an initial interest in bringing Fabian Delph back to the club, although a deal will prove too expensive for them.

The Man City midfielder spent eight years at the Yorkshire club from the age of 12, before being signed by Aston Villa in 2009.

What’s the story?

The paper are reporting that Delph will be available for £15 million as he is entering the final year of his contract.

The 29-year-old has won two Premier Leagues and earnt 18 England caps since leaving Elland Road, and as he reaches the back end of his career it may be time for him to give back to the club that gave him his big break.

He turns 30 in November and with the current project that Marcelo Bielsa is orchestrating at Leeds, he may indeed choose to go back and help his old team reclaim their place at the top table of English football.

Phillips going?

The fact that Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani are eyeing up such a deal may show that Kalvin Phillips is headed away from Elland Road for a reasonable price.

The report states that Delph would be too expensive for Leeds, and they’re right. There is no way that the Yorkshire club would be able to afford his reported £90,000 a week wages on top of the hefty transfer fee unless their most valuable player was headed elsewhere for a huge amount.

Delph would more than likely occupy the position that Phillips will leave open, and the £15 million that City are asking for will most likely be funded by the sale of the 23-year-old.

Whether this is a good thing for Leeds remains to be seen. Their current defensive midfielder works so well in Bielsa’s system, and it may be tough to get Delph motivated to do the same amount of running that Phillips does as he’s so used to playing at the very top level.

The Chalkboard: Rodgers needs to make Iheanacho his next big project

[ad_pod ]As Kelechi Iheanacho was presented with the ball inside the Manchester City penalty area last Monday evening, it looked for all the world as though he’d be about to put a huge dent in his former club’s title aspirations. But football is never that simple. The ball arrived at his feet and in one swift swing of his left boot, he fired miserably off target. It was a chance he’d have taken with aplomb at City. However, in the royal blue of Leicester, he missed. In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…The opportunity rather summed up his time in the Midlands. He’s been pretty shoddy back up for Jamie Vardy, but with Shinji Okazaki departing, now is the time for the Nigerian to step up.

On the chalkboard

If anyone can revive the career of Iheanacho, it can be Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman has worked wonders with young prodigies in the past and after a turbulent few years at the King Power, the young forward may finally have found someone capable of rejuvenating him.

The attacker was impressive for City, scoring 14 times in all competitions throughout the 2015/16 season despite rarely starting. This term, he’s found the net just once.

It’s a horrendous record and after his miss against his ex-employers, it didn’t look like it had any chance of getting better. The stick he received on social media after the game showed just how hated he’s become at the club.

But if Rodgers makes the 6 ft 1 striker his next major project, Leicester could discover the man capable of replacing Vardy in a few years. As such, supporters need to keep faith in him.

Rodgers seems to have a trend of taking promising strikers who perhaps haven’t done too well at big clubs and turning them into prolific forwards.

At Liverpool, he developed Daniel Sturridge into one of the most clinical forwards in the league after he’d failed to really impress at both Chelsea and Man City.

Then at Celtic, he took Moussa Dembele under his wing after he failed to make the grade at PSG.

Dembele is now the same age as Iheanacho, 22, and at one point it looked as though the latter could become one of the most dangerous finishers around.

Unfortunately for Leicester, that hasn’t come true, but with Rodgers at the helm, there’s a possibility of a huge improvement in the years to follow.

Pundit View: Top sports data analyst Nate Silver backs Aston Villa for play-off place

[ad_pod ]

Through his website FiveThirtyEight, leading sports data analyst Nate Silver has backed Dean Smith’s Aston Villa to clinch a place in the Sky Bet Championship play-off places.

What’s he predicted, then?

On a page predicting the outcome of the whole Championship table, Silver’s website has placed Villa in fifth with 71 points, 10 adrift of West Bromwich Albion above but safely in the play-offs.

They are above Bristol City in sixth and Middlesbrough in seventh on goal difference, while Sheffield United miss out on automatic promotion by finishing third below Leeds United, with Norwich City holding on for the title.

After a few teething problems, Smith has hauled the Midlanders back into the promotion running since taking over from Steve Bruce and the club are currently in that fifth place after 11 victories in 27 to begin the reign of the boyhood Villan.

All that data now makes sense

With the form Villa are currently in, it’s hard to argue with Silver on the prediction he’s made – all the data available has been used to create it, after all.

Villa have won five of their last six in the league, pulling themselves up into the play-off places and not just sixth either – into fifth, so it’s in their hands.

Unlike Bruce, Smith is showing all the signs that he’s got what it takes to deliver a second play-off finish in a row and who would back against him at this stage?

Pundit View: Kris Boyd launches harsh criticism at Borna Barisic

[ad_pod ]

Rangers’ season has withered away in the last few weeks, and club legend Kris Boyd has absolutely crucified the performances of Borna Barisic.

Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup at Ibrox last week, and the chances of silverware this campaign are looking very thin indeed.

A major meltdown would now be needed from Celtic for the Gers to overtake their arch-rivals.

While plenty of players have let themselves down since the turn of the year, Boyd has picked on Barisic in particular, who joined the club on a four-year deal last summer.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

What has he said?

In his column for The Scottish Sun, Boyd said: “I also look at the left-back, Borna Barisic, and see a player who doesn’t want to be at Rangers.

“Every time I see him he just goes through the motions and I don’t get it. Whenever the going gets tough he seems to be injured.

“The best left-back in the building is Lee Wallace and yet he can’t even get into any of the squads with midfielder Halliday the second choice.

“That whole episode just stinks.”

What’s the verdict?

With all due respect to Boyd, he couldn’t be farther from the truth on this one.

Barisic has not had a great first season in Glasgow, but he is an experienced Croatian international with a wonderful left-foot.

While he may not be perfect, he is not worse than Lee Wallace or Andy Halliday, who are quite simply not the standard required to challenge for titles and European campaigns.

Boyd’s criticism of director of football Mark Allen was completely fair, but to lash out at one player when 90 per cent of the squad is in poor form is absolutely ridiculous.

Hibernian: Respect for Clarke must stop at the end of the tunnel

Paul Heckingbottom has taken to Scottish football like a duck to water, overseeing a six-game unbeaten league run since becoming Hibs boss, and has only tasted defeat in a Scottish Cup tie against Celtic.

Taking 15 points from a possible 18, has quietly turned the Easter Road side from top half hopefuls to having an outside chance of snatching a Europa League spot.

It is an unlikely scenario for the Edinburgh side, but that it is possible at all, is a sign that the new manager has things moving in the right direction.

They take on Kilmarnock later, and a win, and helpful results elsewhere, possibly seeing them within three points of third.

It is clear that Heckingbottom has a lot of respect for his opposite number, Steve Clarke, but that has to be put aside as soon as they emerge from the tunnel.

Speaking to the Daily Record ahead of the game, the Hibs boss said: “I’ve come up against him in games and crossed paths with him on coaching courses.

“Steve is experienced and the level of players and clubs he has worked with is another reason why you’re not surprised where they are.

“He’s someone who has made it really clear what can be achieved in this league.

“Watching him and his team over a few weeks I can see why they’ve done it. There’s a lot of experience and Steve has them playing in a way where they’re all working for each other too.

“He has made good signings, he has a good squad of players. He’s a good manager with good coaches who set the team up in a way which suits them.”

But tomorrow night is not about Kilmarnock, or Steve Clarke. It is about Hibernian performing as they have done since Heckingbottom arrived, and maintaining their fine run.

When a manager arrives at a club after Christmas, it is always about consolidating and achieving small targets that you set throughout the remainder of the season, and get a gauge of what you need to do to improve things next season.

The response Heckingbottom has had from his players will give him plenty of heart ahead of the summer recruitment drive, and he is hoping that his players will continue to be tested in the last few games.

Three points against Killie tomorrow will be uppermost in his mings, with the Edinburgh derby arriving hot on its heels. And tough games are exactly what the manager is hoping for.

“If it goes how we want it to go, the games should just get tougher,” he told Edinburgh Live.

“In the short term, we wanted to get to the top six. That does look achievable now. That’s through the hard work of the players and the results we’ve got.

“But, if we get there, it gets even harder – because all we’re doing then is playing teams above us. And that’s what we want.”

It promises to be a big few days for Hibs, and if they can secure two wins from the two games, who knows where they will be sitting when the division splits?

What do you think of the job Paul Heckingbottom has done since his arrival, Hibs fans? Can you make it back into Europe? Let us know…
