Du Plessis, Chris Morris get South Africa T20 call-up

Faf du Plessis, the middle order batsman, has been has been named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the unofficial Twenty20 tri-series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe in June

Firdose Moonda30-May-2012Faf du Plessis, the middle order batsman, has been named in South Africa’s 15-man squad for the unofficial Twenty20 tri-series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in Zimbabwe in June, while Chris Morris, the Highveld Lions allrounder, has received a maiden call-up.The squad will be led by Johan Botha. AB de Villiers, allrounder Jacques Kallis and the fast-bowling pair of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel have been rested because all four played extensively during the recent IPL and will likely be needed in all three formats for the upcoming series against England.Du Plessis has played 21 ODIs for South Africa but has never been part of the Twenty20 squad. He staked a claim for a place in the shortest format after a successful stint with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2012. Du Plessis, who opened the batting and scored three half-centuries, held the orange cap for being the leading scorer in the tournament at one stage, although he finished 13th on the batting charts. In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, du Plessis said, “If I could pick where to bat in 20-over cricket, I would say I’d like to open. It suits my style of batting because I am someone who can hit the ball over the top and along the ground, and I’ve learned when to hold back and when to go for it.”Du Plessis has been tipped to open the batting with world-record holder Richard Levi, although that would probably come at the expense of limited-overs vice-captain Hashim Amla. While du Plessis’ inclusion in the national squad was expected, Morris’ came as a complete surprise to everyone, including himself.”One of my former provincial coaches, Lawrence Mahatlane called me up to say congratulations and I wasn’t sure what he was talking about,” Morris, who has also been picked in the South Africa A side to play Sri Lanka A, told ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t know what to do yet. I’m not sure if I should jump and down or what. I was just happy to be playing franchise cricket and I didn’t even think about the national side at all. I’ve come such a long way in such a short time, that definitely wasn’t in my thoughts.”Morris has just completed his first full season as a franchise cricketer, having been spotted by former Highveld Lions coach Gordon Parsons in Centurion in 2009.South Africa’s 15-man squad

Johan Botha (capt), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Marchant de Lange, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Dane Vilas (wk)

“Gordon saw me there and asked me if I wanted to go to trials at the Lions and I did,” he said. “Before that I was playing club cricket in Pretoria and to be honest, I didn’t really set the scene alight. But then I got offered to go to the Lions academy and the rest is history. The Lions have taught me everything I know about my game.”After playing in the amateur competition for a season, Morris was contracted to the Lions for the 2011-12 season. He scored two half-centuries and took 23 wickets at an average of 26.00 in the first-class competition and was the leading bowler overall in the MiWay T20 competition, with 21 wickets. It was his performances in the shortest format that earned him his national call-up.”He was also very effective as a lower order hitter and played a very significant role in getting the Lions to the final,” Cricket South Africa’s selection convenor, Andrew Hudson, said.Morris opened the bowling and stepped up to bowl at the death as well, two roles he has enjoyed. “I wanted that kind of responsibility because when I have that, then I focus more,” Morris said. While Morris has played club cricket in England before, he has never travelled as part of a tour, except at school, and has also never been to Zimbabwe. Most of the national squad are relative strangers to him as he has only met them as opponents occasionally in the past.”I’m really excited and really looking forward to it,” he said. “The more I can talk to people, the more I am going to learn.”The rest of the squad includes players who have been given opportunity in the past. Both Farhaan Behardien and Dane Vilas featured in South Africa’s XI for a one-off Twenty20 against India in March. Behardien has been a consistent performer for the Titans in the last few seasons and will bat in the middle-order, while Dane Vilas will don the wicketkeeping gloves.Botha continues as captain, after he also led the team in the match against India, an indication that he remains part of South Africa’s World Twenty20 plans. He will be released from his national contract after the ICC event in September to captain South Australia and will not participate in the South African domestic season.

Guptill, McCullum set up T20 sweep

The brothers McCullum ensured that New Zealand sealed their two-match Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe with a convincing win in the second game

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Oct-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBrendon McCullum set up New Zealand’s big total with a rapid half-century•AFPThe brothers McCullum ensured that New Zealand sealed their two-match Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe with a convincing win in the second game. Brendon scored 64 off 37 balls and Nathan took three key wickets with his offspin to wreck Zimbabwe’s hope of evening the series. The hosts were more competitive than they had been in the previous game; after an ordinary performance in the field they batted bravely, but the target was too tall for them.Chris Mpofu started well, with five, precise, back-of-a-length deliveries but indiscipline crept in when his sixth delivery was a legside wide that ended up costing five runs. Kyle Jarvis also had an impressive initial burst with his first ball resulting in a confident appeal for lbw against McCullum. The ball looked destined for middle and leg stump but the umpire did not think so. McCullum was on two at the time and went on to capitalise on his good fortune. The floodgates opened when he clipped Jarvis over mid-wicket for six in the same over.Another six, off an Mpofu slower ball took New Zealand to 28 without loss when rain interrupted play after three overs. The 20-minute break shaved four overs off the game, reducing it to 18 overs a side. It should also have given Zimbabwe’s bowlers enough time to rethink their strategies, but it served only to motivate McCullum and Guptill, who returned to the crease breathing fire. The better they batted, the worse Zimbabwe bowled. Jarvis could not find the right length; Prosper Utseya tossed it up too much and even Ray Price was guilty of dropping it too short. McCullum took a particular liking to Utseya, smacking him for two sixes in the ninth over to get to the brink of his half-century. His fifty came up, surprisingly, with a single off Elton Chigumbura.Just when it looked as though the rest of New Zealand’s batsmen might not get a chance to occupy the crease, Zimbabwe got a breakthrough with the first ball of Jarvis’ third over. McCullum tried the paddle scoop and missed. But the dismissal was a false dawn. Even as it sent one powerhitter back to the dressing room, it brought another one out. Jesse Ryder played carefully for the first few balls he was at the crease and then pulled Utseya over square leg for four to announce his arrival. With McCullum gone, Guptill took over and reached a fifty of his own, without taking many risks. He pummelled Mpofu in the 16th over, before falling to a big shot off Jarvis.Although the stats do not reflect it, Zimbabwe’s bowlers produced a number of good deliveries. Unfortunately for them, they also sent down at least one hittable delivery in every over. Mpofu finally got it right in the final over, when he bowled full and straight and was able to squeeze the New Zealand batsmen, but it was too little, too late.Zimbabwe will take heart from their chase, which started in promising fashion, was quickly pegged back with early two wickets but then took flight again. With moisture still hanging in the air, Hamilton Masakadza was undone by seam movement from Doug Bracewell and was caught behind. In the next over, Brendan Taylor was bowled by a slower ball from Aldridge.Instead of allowing the innings to unravel, Chamu Chibhabha and Elton Chigumbura took the fight to New Zealand. Chibhabha, a man known for his ability to hit the ball a long way in domestic cricket, tucked into debutant Graeme Aldridge, who bowled too full at first and too short later. Chigumbura dealt with changes in length and speed in the same fashion, by taking dispatching the deliveries over the boundary and Chibhabha did well to attack the spinners. Their third-wicket partnership of 57 threatened to give Zimbabwe an unlikely chance at victory but Nathan McCullum put an end to any thoughts of a win.He got rid of Chigumbura after reacting speedily to take a good return catch and dismissed Charles Coventry for a duck in the same fashion. Chibhabha continued to fight hard but, after reaching his highest score in this format, was undone by the two brothers: he was stumped by Brendon off Nathan. With Chibhabha gone, Zimbabwe’s chase fizzled out and came to an ignominious end with four wickets falling in four balls in the 17th over, two of them run-outs.

SLC angry over allegation against players

A potential dispute involving two leading cricketers, Sri Lanka Cricket and a state-owned channel appears to have been doused

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Mar-2011A potential dispute involving two leading cricketers, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and a state-owned channel appears to have been doused after the channel issued a clarification over remarks made by an anchor following Sri Lanka’s 11-run loss to Pakistan on Saturday.A commentary on Sunday on Sri Lanka’s state TV network, ITN, said a businessman had bet roughly $18,000 on a Pakistan victory and, according to an SLC release, implied “that our players might have been involved in match-fixing.”SLC condemned the comments and said it would be taking up the matter “with the relevant authorities of this channel, based on the fact that this channel has brought great distress to two of our national cricketers.” After Sri Lanka’s nine-wicket win over Kenya on Tuesday, a board official said that the matter would be discussed with lawyers and board authorities.Soon after the SLC release, ITN issued its own clarification. “It must be emphasised that our intention was purely not to embarrass” the players. “We wish to express our deep concern if the contents of the programme had hurt both of them or any other party. Today’s “Vimasuma” [the name of the show] was based on making further clarifications with regard to the earlier programme.”Sri Lanka’s team manager Anura Tennekoon denied there would be any inquiry from the SLC or from the International Cricket Council (ICC). “Knowing both [the players], we feel there is no necessity to investigate the matter and, as far as the ICC has concerned, they have the right to investigate but so far they have not brought anything on this,” Tennekoon said. “But we will discuss the matter with our lawyer as well.”

-Eu pretendo me firmar na equipe.

Warne questions move to axe Rajasthan Royals

Shane Warne, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals team for the first three seasons of the IPL, has questioned the league’s governing council’s move to remove his side ahead of the fourth edition of the tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Oct-2010Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain for the first three seasons of the IPL, has questioned the league’s governing council’s move to scrap his side ahead of the fourth edition. The IPL governing council had ejected the Rajasthan and Punjab franchises on charges of transgression of shareholding and ownership norms, but Warne asked whether there were other reasons behind the expulsion.”Is it [the ejection] because the franchises have done something wrong or is there something sinister behind it,” Warne wrote in his personal blog. “Is there an ulterior motive? To me the IPL must be transparent, open, honest, and, above all, fair to all teams! They need to treat them equally; no teacher’s pets!”All of the owners and investors showed a lot of faith and goodwill in the BCCI from the outset. They trusted them to deliver on the massive predictions that led to the franchises being sold at figures never heard of in cricket. With the IPL exceeding all expectations, on all fronts, I find it staggering that the IPL has decided to throw 2 teams out,” Warne wrote.Warne was also critical of the suggestion that Rajasthan did not have the best interests of the game in mind, citing examples of several of his team-mates who have gone on to represent their countries on the back of IPL success.
