Moussa Dembele: West Ham eye £30m swoop as Lyon prepare to sell Moyes target

West Ham United are reportedly eying the perfect January swoop in Olympique Lyonnais forward Moussa Dembele.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, David Moyes’ London Stadium natives are on red alert to Dembele’s situation, as the former Celtic striker is growing frustrated at the Groupama Stadium where manager Rudi Garcia has often left him on the bench this season.

Moyes is a big admirer of the 24-year-old, and could be afforded the chance of presenting Dembele with a second crack at English football after emerging through Fulham’s academy before moving to Parkhead.

Lyon are considering cashing in on Dembele come the January market but are expected to demand at least £30million, while also insisting on substantial add-on clauses for the sought-after Manchester United target.

West Ham are claimed to have money to spend in the winter after failing to buy a striker this summer, and Moyes intends to utilise his war chest to find a replacement for Sebastien Haller having been opposed to fielding the Manuel Pellegrini signing this term.

Backed for greatness

Moyes has so far only felt fit to start Haller in two Premier League fixtures this season, with both coming since losing Michail Antonio to a hamstring injury. The West Ham boss would be able to move on from the Irons’ £45m record signing by acquiring Dembele, though.

The Lyon ace is yet to open his scoring for the term in Ligue 1, having been restricted to four starts from nine with five further appearances from the bench, but struck home 24 times in 46 games across all competitions last season – including netting a game-winning brace over Manchester City in the Champions League Quarter-Final.

Dembele would also suit Moyes’ tactics far better than Haller, who the Scot believes does not bring the same energy to the sole-striker position in his formation that Antonio can offer.

Eintracht Frankfurt extracted the most from Haller when the forward was fielded alongside Luka Jovic and Ante Rebic, leading to 20 goals and 12 assists in the 2018/19 season. Dembele, meanwhile, may not be not considered the next Kylian Mbappe or Neymar, but is rather seen as the next Olivier Giroud for France through his ability both on and off the ball.

“Moussa has always been a complete player,” Laurent Bonadei, who coached Dembele while he was a rising star of Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, told Goal.

“He’s not a player who will dribble three players in a phone booth, like Mbappe or Neymar, but he can become Giroud’s successor in the French team, because he doesn’t hesitate to go into duels and work for the collective.”

Bonadei’s praise for Dembele was perfectly reflected by his efforts against Manchester City in last season’s Champions League Quarter-Final, when he came off the bench to flip the tie in the Ligue 1 outfit’s favour with a brace from two shots while attempting four duels in 15 minutes, per SofaScore.

Moyes would undoubtedly adore having a player of Dembele’s ilk at the London Stadium, it just remains to be seen if David Sullivan is willing to match Lyon’s minimum £30m valuation for a player tipped to succeed France’s second-best goalscorer of all-time.

AND in other news, West Ham have entered the £8m race to sign an in-demand sensation who “can do anything”.

Report: Spurs line up move for 25-goal ace

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Braga striker Paulinho, according to 90min.

Jose Mourinho’s side are in the market for a new striker in the summer as they look to provide support to Harry Kane.

Mourinho admitted earlier this week that he hopes to sign a forward before the transfer deadline in October.

And it appears that Paulinho has been targeted as a possible acquisition.

90min reports that the forward, who scored 25 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions last season, would cost less than £30m and is viewed as an attainable target.

Wolves were previously linked with a move for Paulinho but opted against it, instead signing Fabio Silva from Porto.

And that may have opened the door for Spurs to swoop as they look to finally bolster their forward line.

Spurs had opted against bids for both Callum Wilson and Ollie Watkins, the report states, and they instead joined Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively.

A bid could be forthcoming for Paulinho, though, especially after Mourinho addressed the situation in public earlier this week.

New blood is needed; the wait cannot go on.

Crystal Palace: Fans react as Sky Sports give transfer update on Eberechi Eze

Eberechi Eze, who plays for Queens Park Rangers, has been heavily linked with Crystal Palace over the last couple of weeks; and as speculation continues, many Eagles fans have been reacting to the latest update on the player.

According to Sky Sports, and tweeted out by Palace Xtra, the south London side are still negotiating with QPR over the transfer of Eze, and this is good news for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it shows that the club should hopefully go back in with another offer soon, and secondly because at the moment it seems that no other side has made official contact apart from Palace.

It is understandable to see why Palace, as well as fellow Premier League sides like West Ham and Newcastle, are interested in the player, as he scored 14 goals and provided eight assists for the R’s last season, per WhoScored. He has also managed on average 2.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.3 successful dribbles per game.

For many supporters of the Eagles, though, they are concerned about the deal taking too long. This worry is emphasised due to the fact that Wilfried Zaha wants to leave and, if you take Jordan Ayew’s nine goals out of the squad, their next top scorer is Zaha with only four.

Hopefully someone with as much attacking influence like Eze can come in and help the club produce more than the 31 goals they scored in the Premier League last season.

Here is what these Palace fans said following the latest report on Eze:

Everton: Fans fume as club release statement on Dixie Dean statue incident

Lots of Everton fans have been left fuming as their beloved statue of Dixie Dean outside Goodison Park was lit up with a red flare, as the Merseyside club have since released an official statement on the matter as per their official website.

As per the statement, the Toffees are assisting the Merseyside Police with enquiries into the incident and have urged anyone that knows anything about what happened to contact them as soon as possible.

On a more positive note, the Blues also confirmed that, following inspection and cleaning of the memorial and the site as a whole, no permanent damage has been done to the statue or the floral tributes laid on the foot of it.

The statue itself represents EFC’s greatest ever goalscorer, as Dean scored a quite incredible 60 goals in just 39 games for them in the 1927/28 season, and during the 1928 calendar year he netted a staggering 85 goals, according to the National Football Museum.

These supporters on Twitter were left fuming upon hearing the news of what happened, as Dean is a club legend and the statue and the memorials were a commemoration of both him and what he represented for Everton:

Leeds ace Helder Costa stole the show against Stoke

Just days after completing his permanent move to the club, Helder Costa showed exactly why Leeds spending around £16m on him may be great business both for now and for the future.

The former Wolves winger looked in imperious form against Stoke on Thursday, and in a thrilling team performance that saw the Whites thrash their opponents 5-0, it was arguably Costa who well and truly stood out from the pack.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Pablo Hernandez’s introduction at half-time gave Leeds some extra impetus no doubt (Marcelo Bielsa’s side scored four of their goals in the second half), but it was Costa who tormented Stoke’s back-line all game.

It was no surprise that as per Sofascore, his 8.7 match rating was the highest of any player on the pitch.

After helping to win the penalty for Leeds’ opener, Costa scored and later assisted for the Whites too, but his impact was more than just that.

He completed two of his three dribbles, provided a team-high four key passes, and lost possession just six times over the course of the 90 minutes – to put that in perspective, Hernandez, who came on at the break, conceded the ball on 14 separate occasions.

And speaking after the game, Leeds boss Bielsa waxed lyrical about Costa’s performance, saying: “He was balanced. He made a difference. He unbalanced individually. That makes the reach of the attack of one team.”

With just a few games left, and automatic promotion edging over close, having an in-form attacker in Costa may just be the final little push that Leeds need to get over the finishing line in the next couple of weeks.

Spurs fans left confused by Jose Mourinho’s team selection

Tottenham returned to Premier League action against Manchester United on Friday night – but some of their fans were left flabbergasted about one player who didn’t feature in their 1-1 draw against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Spurs went into their first game for more than three months trailing the top-four rivals by four points, although Jose Mourinho’s men looked on course to end a six-match winless run in all competitions when January signing Steven Bergwijn fired them into an early lead.

However, with just nine minutes remaining, Paul Pogba won United a penalty that Bruno Fernandes duly dispatched past Hugo Lloris to ensure a share of the spoils in north London.

Tottenham looked leggy in the latter stages, but Mourinho opted to use just two of his five substitutes – keeping record-signing Tanguy Ndombele on the bench, much to the displeasure of a number of Spurs fans on Twitter.

Some were angry, whilst others demanded the Portuguese to start the French midfielder against West Ham on Tuesday.

Glasgow Rangers: ‘Gers lead the way in terms of penalties in Scotland

As per the CIES Football Observatory, Glasgow Rangers have had more penalties than any other side in the Scottish Premiership during the last three seasons.

The study covered a number of Europe’s top-tier divisions, with complete stats provided for the entirety of the Premiership. The study revealed that the ‘Gers have had 23 penalties during the past three campaigns, which is three more than the next most rewarded club Hamilton Academical, whilst it is nine more than their fierce Glasgow rivals Celtic.

They don’t quite lead the way in terms of success rate, though, with Aberdeen having netted 88.9% of their spot-kicks compared to the Light Blues’ 87%, but that is still a strong completion rate.

Of course, given that Celtic have won the last nine league titles, this clearly doesn’t have too much of an effect on proceedings north of the border, but there is certainly some solace that Steven Gerrard can take. The large number of penalties at least shows that the ‘Gers are taking the game to their opponents and are putting sides under pressure in the final third.

As Gerrard looks to finally wrestle the Premiership title away from the Bhoys, this is a stat he can certainly build upon next season.

‘Gers fans, were you surprised to learn that the Light Blues have won more penalties than any other Premiership club since 2017? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

Wolves wing-back Adama Traore may have missed his one chance to impress for Spain

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Wolverhampton Wanderers wide man Adama Traore may have missed his one golden opportunity to cement his name amongst the Spanish national team, but it’s through no fault of his own with journalist and author Guillem Balague calling his injury a ‘real shame.’

What’s he said?

Last week, there was plenty of confusion over what country Traore had pledged his allegiance to as reports had claimed that the 23-year-old elected for the Africa nation over Spain.

But that soon changed when the 2010 World Cup winners called the winger up to their Euro 2020 qualifying squad to replace the injured Rodrigo Moreno.

However, Traore picked up a knock in Wolves’ last match, a 2-1 win over local rivals Aston Villa at Molineux, meaning he had to withdraw, forcing him to wait longer for his national team debut.

Spanish football journalist Balague took to Twitter to talk about the unfortunate circumstances, he said:

Opportunity missed

Spain are a national team that are rich in history – three European Championships and one World Cup – meaning they have always produced top-tier talent over the years.

Such achievements make it hard for players like Traore to fully break into the setup and embed their name amongst international folklore, so when an opportunity like this comes about, it simply cannot be missed.

But due to circumstances out of his control, the Wolves ace is now unable to take such chances.

This current international break is the last of the calendar year with no more games expected until March when those that have qualified for next summer’s Championships will embark on a series of friendlies to warm up in preparation.

Traore is going to have to keep performing at his current rate to now be considered for those matches -Â a tough task bearing in mind he only got into this squad originally through another player’s absence.

At least for now, he is on manager Robert Moreno’s mind, the fact that they were together at Barcelona at the same time should help his cause somewhat.
