Chandimal rules himself out of IPL

Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 captain Dinesh Chandimal has made himself unavailable for the IPL, and has instead planned an intensive training programme to prepare for the Champions Trophy, and a busy limited-overs schedule to follow for Sri Lanka. Chandimal will also take English lessons and media training in Sri Lanka during the next two months, having been named captain in Twenty20s, and vice-captain in the other formats in February.”Over the next two months, I’ll be doing a lot of training,” he said*. “I still have a few issues with my technique that need to be sorted out, so I will be working very hard with the national coaches to correct those issues, looking forward to a busy season. I’m also hoping to do some studies, and spend time with family as well.”Chandimal had been approached by at least one IPL franchise, who were seeking a replacement for an injured overseas player, but although no formal offer was made, he has decided to rule himself out of the tournament.Chandimal had gone unsold in the 2013 IPL auction, and if a franchise had signed him as a replacement, his contract would have been worth his base auction price of $100,000. He is unlikely to have regularly been in the playing XI however, and may have collected significantly less than that amount. Training opportunities may also have been limited during the tournament. In 2012, he was released by Rajasthan Royals midway through the IPL to allow him to return home to train ahead of the home series against Pakistan.”Chandimal hasn’t requested a no objection certificate (NOC), and so he won’t be playing in the IPL,” Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ajit Jayasekara said.Thirteen other Sri Lanka players have signed contracts for this year’s IPL, but will not play in Chennai, due to political upheaval over the treatment of Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu.Sri Lanka’s next international assignment is the Champions Trophy in June, after which they play a tri-series with India and West Indies, and a home limited-overs series against South Africa, in quick succession.* March 31, 2013 6.00pm GMT This story has been updated with Dinesh Chandimal quotes

Ram Slam fixing case: CSA's ACSU officer denies racial discrimination

Louis Cole gives testimony to SJN hearing after claims by several players banned over fixing scandal

Firdose Moonda25-Oct-2021There was no racial discrimination in the investigation and sanctioning of seven South African players for conspiring to fix matches in the 2015-16 Ram Slam, according to Louis Cole, the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) officer who headed the inquiry.Cole was testifying at CSA’s Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearing in response to claims made by Alviro Petersen, Ethy Mbhalati, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Thami Tsolekile, who agreed to bans of 2-12 years for their role in the fixing scandal. They told the SJN that they were targeted because of their race. Cole disputed that with details of their attempts to fix matches and their negotiations involving sums of money ranging from R30,000 (US$2,000) to R1,000,000 (US$68,000), after being recruited by Gulam Bodi.Related

Last year, Tsolekile and Petersen made similar claims on a national radio show, leading to CSA issuing a notice of its willingness to reinvestigate if players were racially discriminated against during in the investigation.Cole, whose testimony lasted for four hours, said there was no discrimination and that the inquiry was conducted in line with both the ICC’s Anti-Corruption guidelines and South Africa’s criminal investigatory proceedings.Bodi, Pumi Matshikweand Jean Symes, the three other players involved, have not appeared at the SJN. In 2019, Bodi was sentenced to five years in prison under the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act while Symes has appeared before South Africa’s specialist crimes unit, the Hawks, and Matshikwe has been approached by them.”The allegations that the players made before the SJN, based on the evidence that we uncovered and that I presented today, in my opinion, is a misrepresentation of the facts,” Cole said. “It is very unfortunate that they would have used this platform of the SJN, which I feel is very important for cricket in South Africa, and also for players.”As the ombudsman has alluded to, the terms of reference was to investigate discrimination against players within the game. For these players to use this platform, which could have been used to investigate and deal with players who had genuinely been discriminated against, is very unfortunate. We investigated this over a period of 20 months, where it really took its toll. I think that is very unfair.“Cole presented the SJN with video evidence from interviews conducted with the players during the investigation as well as one of a cellphone camera which documented Tsolekile’s meeting with a match fixer. Tsolekile could be heard telling the fixer about team selection and the players he could recruit.”At the moment, I am talking about the definites. It’s me and Lopsy,” Tsolekile is heard saying in the video. “And Pumi. Symes is in, but I don’t think he is going to play. If Pumi is fit he will play.”Thami Tsolekile claims he received a harsher punishment because of racial discrimination•PA Photos

The video also contained an interview which the ICC’s interim general manager of the Anti-Corruption Unit, Martin Vertigen, conducted with Manish Jain, one of the fixers Bodi was working with. Jain picked Tsolekile, Tsotsobe, Matshikwe and Petersen out of a photo board of players he had recruited to fix matches.Jain confirmed to Vertigen that he offered Tsolekile, Tsotsobe and Petersen R220,000 (US$15,000) for a fix that involved Tsotsobe conceding more than 10 runs in an over (the over number was going to be finalised before the match), while Tsolekile and Petersen were due to score slowly. The money would be paid to the players after the game between Lions and Dolphins on November 4, 2015, provided the fix took place. But, it didn’t.In a later part of the video, Bodi detailed how he collaborated with a different fixer, who made offers of R600,000 (US$40,800) to Tsolekile and R10,00,000 (US$68,000) to Tsolekile and Tsotsobe jointly for fixing. However, the only money that changed hands was an amount to secure the players’ availability for the fix.Cole confirmed that Bodi said Tsolekile received R75,000 (US$5100), Tsotsobe received R60,000 (US4000) and Matshikwe, Mbhalati and Symes got R30,000 each (US$3000), while there was no evidence that Petersen received any money. This despite him agreeing to R100,000 (US$6800) to confirm his involvement, only for him not arrive to collect it.The video evidence also corroborates CSA’s statement, made last year, that Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Craig Alexander rejected Bodi’s offer to fix and blew the whistle on his plans.Bodi confirmed to investigators that he had “a no” from both van Jaarsveld and Alexander, who were mentioned by Tsotsobe, in particular, as having not been investigated because of racial privilege. van Jaarsveld is white, while Alexander is coloured.Cole also explains why the seven players in the Ram Slam scandal received bans of several years when Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams, who were involved in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal of 2000, were sanctioned for just six months each. “There was no anti-corruption training and there was no ICC code at that time,” he said, while explaining the penalty was a “practical one”.SJN ombudsman Dumisa Ntsebeza, whose terms of reference do not include match-fixing, said Cole’s testimony has added to the complexities of his task in order to determine the extent of racial discrimination in South African cricket.”In as much as there may be an emphasis as to who became the victims of what happened in the past, there is a sense in which the irony becomes one where even the perpetrators are the victims in a sense, if what the victims are alleging turns out to be manifestly inaccurate or untrue,” he said. “Then the alleged perpetrators become the victims themselves of what has been said about them.”Which is why even within the strictures of time that this project has unfortunately been compelled to act within, an opportunity had to be provided for everyone, especially those who had been mentioned to their detriment to rebut allegations, to explain where allegations need to be explained and also to give me the opportunity to reflect, at the end of it all, what I make of the evidence.”

É a face do pé. Uma ruptura parcial. É um lugar de apoio, onde sente muita dor. Pode ser a repetição do esforço. Se fosse uma ruptura total seria melhor. Para a medicina, não há uma precisão (do tempo de retorno). Depende do dia a dia.

No facilities for uncontracted players – SLC proposal

Cricketers not contracted with Sri Lanka Cricket will no longer be allowed to use the board’s facilities, including medical assistance, the board’s executive committee has decided. SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga confirmed these details to ESPNcricinfo. The decision has so far met with a positive response. “I believe it’s fair enough,” Ken de Alwis, the spokesman of the Sri Lanka Cricketers Association told . “If a player signs a contract, then he becomes an employee of SLC. But if a player does not sign it, then SLC has no obligation to look after his interests.”The SLC will submit the contract proposals to the association.Fast bowler Lasith Malinga didn’t sign an SLC contract last year but received medical assistance from the board when he returned to Sri Lanka briefly for treatment during the current IPL season, in which he’s representing Mumbai Indians. Malinga plays for Sri Lanka in limited-overs internationals but has retired from Test cricket. Nishantha Ranatunga, at the time of Malinga’s treatment, had said: “Though he has no central contract, it is the SLC’s duty to look after the national players.” The latest proposal by the SLC, though, suggests a chance of stance.

Botha a 'natural-born leader' – Berry

South Australia’s coach Darren Berry has described the state’s new captain Johan Botha as a fierce, ruthless international competitor who will bring natural leadership qualities to the Redbacks. Botha will be released from his Cricket South Africa contract after the ICC World Twenty20 in September and will take up a two-year contract to lead South Australia, replacing Michael Klinger as captain. The move was unexpected after Klinger in February led the Redbacks to their first one-day title in 25 years, but South Australia hope Botha will bring a fresh approach to a team that has won only one Sheffield Shield match in the past two seasons. Klinger said he was fully supportive of the move, which would allow him to focus solely on his batting.”I loved every minute of captaining South Australia but I think for the betterment of South Australian cricket this decision will definitely help us go forward,” Klinger told reporters in Adelaide. “He’s a fantastic person, a disciplined character, which I think will be great for our group, and he’s a very skilful cricketer. For him to come in and be part of the leadership group and captain our side will help us move forward.”Botha impressed the South Australian hierarchy with his on-field and off-field work for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League in December and January. He is regarded by Berry as the kind of man who can help the state’s younger cricketers develop while holding down his own place in all formats with his offspin and solid batting.”We worked with Botha during the Adelaide Strikers series and he had a really good impact on our playing group with his attitude and his leadership,” Berry told ESPNcricinfo. “We were trying to secure him for next year for the Adelaide Strikers and as his one-day career with South Africa has probably tailed off in the last six weeks or so, an opportunity has come up.”We feel that it was a wonderful opportunity to get someone of his experience and class to add to our mix. To come in and take the reins as captain as a pure outsider could be just the tonic to really help us improve and achieve what we want to in four-day cricket.”Botha has led South Africa in 10 ODIs and 11 Twenty20 internationals and his teams lost only five of those 21 matches. His role in the side is expected to vary depending on the availability of Nathan Lyon and his position will be more like that of the allrounder Aaron O’Brien, who has not been offered a South Australia contract for next summer after playing only two Shield games in 2011-12.”We don’t expect him to be a massive matchwinner for us, but what he is is a quality, ruthless international competitor,” Berry said of Botha. “He’s a jet in the field, he’s more than adequate and solid with the bat, which we need in our middle order. He’ll add some steel to our middle order, which constantly falls over. And his bowling will do a really serviceable job.”The other good thing about it, and this is why Botha is such a good leader and good person, he’s made it quite clear he will fit into the team wherever we need him to fit in. That means that whenever Nathan Lyon is available, there is no question that Nathan Lyon is the No.1 spinner and Botha will play as a batsman in those games and be the second spinner.””He’s a cool head under pressure, he’s a super-fierce competitor. He’s captained his [South African] franchise, the Warriors. We played against him in two Champions League matches and were really impressed by his tactical nous and his knowledge of the game is first-class. When you talk cricket with him he’s one of those natural-born leaders.”While Botha might take the position of a younger spinner like Cameron Williams, who made his first-class in February, Berry said the benefit the state’s younger slow bowlers would benefit significantly from working with Botha. During 2011-12, the Redbacks used several spinners – Williams played one Shield game, O’Brien played two, Cullen Bailey played three and Lyon played two.”We have some talented youngsters but they are a fair way off the mark,” Berry said. “He’ll be a good role model for them and almost like an on-the-job coach who will be able to assist them. We’re getting him to assist on the field with the development side of our young players. We might play one of our young spinners alongside him so that he can lead them on the field as well. That was part of the appeal, the impact he will have on the younger players.”Berry said Botha’s presence would be a major boost for the state’s leadership on-field and off-field, with the development of a leadership group part of his plan with the squad. And Berry stressed that Klinger had done nothing wrong to prompt the move to Botha.”What I’m trying to create is a culture of a core leadership group rather than what cricket has notoriously been about with the one sole figure-head,” he said. “At South Australia we need a group of leaders if we’re going to move forward. What did Klinger do wrong? Absolutely nothing. What we’d like Klinger to do is play cricket for Australia and continue to be a wonderful role model around our group, which he is. There was no issue with Klinger. It was just an opportunity to add an international captain to our mix.”
