PCB employs vigilance officer for Champions Trophy

PCB have hired a vigilance officer and a security officer to help tighten security and prevent players from unsolicited approaches

Umar Farooq13-May-2013Pakistan’s tour to England in 2010 was embroiled in controversy as the spot-fixing debacle created waves around the cricket world. To protect players from unsolicited approaches and avoid a repeat of the affair, the PCB has decided to deploy a security officer and a vigilance officer who will monitor player activities, with the intention of protecting them from unwanted social contact and media interviews. This will be Pakistan’s first visit to England since that ill-fated tour. They will depart on Monday night and stop briefly in Scotland and Ireland to play two ODIs against both countries, before heading to England for the Champions Trophy.”It’s a very sensitive tour,” Naveed Akram Cheema, the team manager, told reporters at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. “All the players realise the importance of it, and they should maintain strict discipline as we don’t want a repeat of events. Players [have been] told to restrict their off-field movements and focus on the game.”Security has been increased in light of the spot-fixing controversy, which erupted during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s in 2010. Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, who were involved in the incident, were sentenced in November 2011 at Southwark Crown Court for conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat.”They are all spirited players and over the last two-three years have played as a unit. The tour is sensitive in that there are lots of people who could have vested interests, and we have to counter that,” Cheema said. “Psychologically, they are motivated and united.”Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was “optimistic” about the side’s chances in the Champions Trophy, but was wary that the team would face a dual test, both on and off the field, during the tournament.Dav Whatmore, Pakistan’s head coach, also expressed high hopes for the team. “We begin every series with an intent to win,” Whatmore said. “We feel we’ve got the best fifteen that we can possibly have at the moment. ICC events are slightly different to bilateral series as there is a requirement to win and finish in the top two. Our objective in all cases is to win tournaments.”

Nosworthy to leave Somerset

Somerset have announced that Dave Nosworthy is to leave his position as director of cricket at the end of the season, after less than two years in the job.Nosworthy was appointed in late 2012 as the successor to Brian Rose but the county were involved in a struggle against relegation for most of his first season, missed out on T20 Finals Day for the first time in five years and lost in the last four of the Yorkshire Bank 40.Although they topped Division One at the midway point this year, defeat against Warwickshire earlier this month effectively ended their hopes of a first title.Perhaps more damaging to Nosworthy’s case was the failure to get past the group stage in either the NatWest Blast or Royal London Cup. Under Rose, Somerset were four-times T20 finalists, winning the competition in 2005, twice runners-up in the 40-over cup and twice finished second in the Championship.”Both the club and Dave have mutually agreed that it is in the best interests of Somerset County Cricket Club to part company at the end of this season,” Guy Lavender, Somerset’s chief executive, said. “Dave will leave with our thanks for all he has done and our best wishes for the future.”We still have a critical part of the season remaining with Dave in charge and all of our immediate efforts are focused on beating Northamptonshire in our County Championship match which commences on Sunday. The process of recruiting Dave’s successor is underway and an announcement will be made in due course”.Ahead of the 2014 season, Nosworthy oversaw changes to the club’s coaching structure, with former Zimbabwe captain Dave Houghton appointed to work with Somerset’s batsmen and Jason Kerr put in charge of the bowlers. Andy Hurry, Somerset’s head coach under Rose, moved into a new position as high performance director.Nosworthy, 46, is to return with his family to South Africa, where he was previously coach of the Lions franchise. He has also worked with Titans and in New Zealand with Canterbury, as well as South Africa A and South Africa Under-19s.”I believe the time is now right for me to return home with my family for a number of personal and business reasons and for me to redirect my own personal energies and ambitions,” Nosworthy said. “With me being the type of character to always put the club and the team first, I believe I have done as much as I can and that the time is now right to step aside.”

O Bahia me acolheu muito bem, tanto o elenco quanto a comissão técnica.

Ficaram a amizade e a admiração. Não sabemos o dia de amanhã. Vamos ver.

Chief selector sees bright future for West Indies cricket

Clyde Butts, chairman of West Indies’ selection panel, has said West Indies A’s impressive show against India A in the unofficial Test series, which the hosts won 2-1, augurs well for the future of West Indies cricket.West Indies A, who made a weak start to the series by losing the first game by two wickets, outplayed India A in the two matches that followed, winning them by comfortable margins. Butts said a strong all-round performance helped the team. “They were exceptional in all departments and deserved to win,” Butts said.”We want to develop our players and see them move forward but we also want to develop a winning mindset. In the ‘Test’ matches the players showed that they are developing into a very competitive unit and it was really good to see the way they performed against more experienced opposition and won the series.”Butts said the WICB had placed greater emphasis on the A-team programme in recent years. “The WICB has set out a policy of development and where we want to go. This series win and some of the individual performance were steps in that direction and we are confident that we are on the right path.”We saw players stepping up and playing with confidence and assurance. Last year we also played some good cricket when the Bangladesh A Team came to the West Indies. The win in this series against India was a huge bonus.”West Indies A will now face India A in two Twenty20 matches on June 23 and 24 and three 50-overs games thereafter. Butts said the selectors picked the side for the T20 matches with an eye on the World Twenty20 in September. “We have the World T20 tournament in Sri Lanka coming in September, that’s just around the corner, so we have selected a number of players who have represented West Indies in this format and others who have done well in the regional competitions.”We had some players who featured in the ‘Tests’ but are not in the T20 side. We want to make it clear they have not been dropped or anything like that. This weekend we are focussing on the T20s and we have selected a few new faces to have a closer look at them against the Indians.”Edited by Carlyle Laurie

Trott and Pietersen provide hope for England

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Jonathan Trott ended day three 40 not out as he and Pietersen set a platform to provide England with hope of chasing 340 to win•Getty Images

Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott earned England an outside chance of a remarkable victory with a resolute partnership against Sri Lanka on the third day of the first Test in Galle.England, set a daunting 340 to win, reached 111 for the loss of both their openers before the close. Bearing in mind that England have been dismissed for under 260 in six of their last seven Test innings and have never successfully chased more than 332 to win a Test, the weight of history and logic is against them.Statistics at Galle also provide little comfort. No team has scored more than 253 in the fourth innings of any of the 18 previous Tests on this ground and the highest successful fourth-innings chase at the ground is just 96.England – and Trott and Pietersen in particular – had reduced the requirement to 229 by the close in an unbroken stand of 63, playing straight, using their feet and keeping their cool despite the pressure of the match situation. The pitch held no terrors, either. It has provided assistance to spinners, certainly, but it has not crumbled into the bowling paradise that some predicted. Not yet, anyway. The result, against an honest but modest attack, is not quite a foregone conclusion. If Sri Lanka did go on to win – and they still should – it would not only mark their first home success without Murali, but would mean England have lost four Tests in a row. For a side who retain, for now, the title of No. 1 Test side, that would represent an acute embarrassment. The title rings very hollow at present.Sri Lanka, by contrast, will have many reasons to thank their pair of unrelated Jayawardenes: Prasanna and Mahela. While it was the latter’s first-innings century that plotted the direction of this game it was the former’s second innings half-century that drove the defining nail into England’s coffin.Prasanna has kept impressively – his stumping of Trott in the first innings and neat take of Alastair Cook in England’s second were fine pieces of work – but equally valuable was the way he helped Sri Lanka eke out 87 runs from the final two wickets. He was watchful for the most part, but still took the opportunity to attack when appropriate, pulling sixes off James Anderson and Stuart Broad and driving Monty Panesar for another.Prasanna received admirably obdurate support from Chanaka Welegedara and Suranga Lakmal as England, hoping to wrap up the innings well before lunch, were kept in the field until the tea interval was in sight. In the end, it took a run-out to end the Sri Lankan innings and, understandably, England’s spirits and shoulders drooped just a little in the heat.Win or lose, England must reflect on their many missed opportunities in this game. Not only have their batsmen continued to underperform – to be bowled out within 47 overs was woeful on a day two Test surface – but they have also squandered several chances in the field. Mahela was reprieved four times during his century, while on the third day Broad made the sort of error that, in this era of professionalism, could reduce a bowling coach to tears of rage.Broad thought he had finished off the Sri Lankan innings on 168 when Prasanna Jayawardene top-edged a return catch to the bowler. But a review by umpire Rod Tucker showed that Broad had overstepped – his eighth no-ball of the game – and England’s bowlers were obliged to continue their efforts. No other bowler from either side has overstepped in the game.Perhaps Samit Patel, on the deep midwicket boundary, might also have done better with a chance offered to him by Jayawardene off Graeme Swann on 53. In attempting to parry the ball back into play, however, Patel’s momentum saw him tread on the boundary rope and concede six. While the incident may fuel the suggestion that Patel’s fitness remains an issue, it was a fiendishly tricky chance.Prasanna Jayawardene’s resilience took the gloss off a fine performance from Swann. The form of England’s off-spinner has been much debated of late with critics seeming to overlook the fact that he actually had the best strike-rate of any England bowler in the Test series against Pakistan in the UAE. Here, however, his performance brooked no argument: he gained drift from the breeze, turn from the pitch and produced the dip that renders him so dangerous. He comfortably outbowled Panesar and finished with 6 for 82. It was the 12th five-wicket haul of his Test career and his best of his eight five-wicket hauls outside England. How Andrew Strauss could do with a similarly uncompromising performance. Here England’s captain was drawn down the pitch by a flighted delivery and drove to mid-on – the idea was fine; the execution horrid – and now has one century in his last 48 Test innings and an average of 25.50 in the last calendar year. While England were winning that may be ignorable. Once they start losing, it becomes a major issue.Alastair Cook might consider himself unfortunate. Originally reprieved by the on-field umpire, Tucker, Cook was adjudged to have edged to Prasanna by third umpire Bruce Oxenford. Oxenford privately suggested that he could see a change of direction and so overruled Tucker: it was not all that obvious to television viewers. The rest of the day belonged to England. Trott, sweeping with rare command, survived a reviewed LBW decision on seven, but otherwise looked admirably solid, while Pietersen, on eight, cleared mid-off by inches as he miscued a lofted drive and was then dropped on 12 at leg slip by Kumar Sangakkara off Suraj Randiv. It was a hard chance but, in a game of full of errors, it may yet prove to have been a turning point.

Finn wants to stop carrying drinks

Steven Finn had to sit on the sidelines during the Test series but is ready to mark his mark in the one-dayers

You might expect a man on the fringes of a team – and a losing team at that – to point out the failings of his colleagues in an attempt to advance his own ambitions.Steven Finn, however, is not that sort. While he admits to frustration at having been 12th man throughout England’s Test series against Pakistan, he remains fiercely protective of his under fire colleagues, insisting this is not the time for knee-jerk reactions.Finn came within an ace of playing in both the first two Tests of the series against Pakistan in the UAE. On the first occasion he missed out to Chris Tremlett and on the second he missed out to Monty Panesar. Panesar’s subsequent success ended Finn’s hopes of selection for the third Test and he was a powerless onlooker as England, their batsmen bamboozled by Pakistan’s spin attack, succumbed to a 3-0 whitewash.”In terms of having to change personnel, I don’t think we need that kind of knee-jerk reactions at the moment,” Finn said. “The side has been very, very successful over the last two years with the personnel who played in this series. There’s no doubt we have the best people available in the country playing in the team, we just didn’t adapt to the conditions as quickly as we’d have hoped.”The bowlers did a fantastic job during this Test series. Obviously I wanted to play every game and I was disappointed that I didn’t, but that’s the way it goes.”I’m getting very good at mixing drinks for the boys. I’ve sort of got used to it over the last 12 months. But it’s not the sort of thing you enjoy getting used to.”The worry for England is that they have lost nine of their last ten international games. It is a run that extends back to the final Twenty20 international game against West Indies in September and includes the tour of India, the current tour of the UAE and all three formats of the game. While their Test form has been, until recently, good, their ODI form away from home has been wretched. They lost all five ODIs against India in October and have lost 14 of their last 20 ODIs outside England. There are few realistic grounds for optimism going into the ODI series against Pakistan. But Finn was one of the few successes of England’s limited-overs tour of India. Not only did he take the most wickets of any English bowler – eight – but he also proved the most economical, conceding 5.27 runs an overs. He bowled at a sharp pace and showed a newly acquired ability to reverse swing the ball. Aged just 22, he is one of England’s brightest prospects. Now he hopes that he can be part of a fresh injection of young talent into an England camp that is looking to the future and the World Cup in Australasia in particular. In Finn, along with new additions Jos Buttler (aged 21), Danny Briggs (aged 20), and the likes of recently capped Jonny Bairstow (aged 22), England hope they have the nucleus of a bright, young side that can lead the team to brighter times.”This one-day team is a very youthful, very exciting place to be,” Finn said. “The guys coming in, the fresh faces, are going to be very enthusiastic to show what they can do.”They’re very skilled players as well, so they’re going to be breathing down the necks of the guys in the team. I think this one-day series is going to be a great opportunity for us to put what’s gone under the carpet.”Finn also feels that Friday’s game against England Lions will present an excellent opportunity for young players to catch the eye of the England management. While Andy Flower, the England coach, has confirmed that Lions players will not be promoted to the senior squad irrespective of performances in the game, Finn knows from experience that such games can provide a useful ‘shop window.’It was in the same stadium in Abu Dhabi in February 2010 that Finn, along with Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb, were part of a Lions side that beat England. On the strength of that performance, Kieswetter and Lumb were selected as the opening partnership for the World Twenty20 while Finn wasn’t far behind in a call up.”Friday’s game is going to be important for everyone, on either of the two sides,” Finn said. “There’s great opportunity for people on both sides to push for places in every format of the game. If you look at Kieswetter and Lumb, they played against the England team over here two years ago, the next month they were opening the batting in the World Twenty20. I played in that game, too, and less than a month later, I was playing Test cricket.”Andy Flower and the management team are looking for people’s attitudes; they’re looking for things other than just performances – and games like this are a great opportunity for people on both sides to show everything they can give.”The Lions team will contain all the members of the senior England squad who do not make it into the main England side for Friday’s match.Meanwhile Andy Hurry, the first team coach at Somerset, has joined the England party to deputise for Richard Halsall, the fielding coach and Flower’s unofficial deputy, who has returned to England to be with his heavily pregnant wife.England are also looking into the possibility of some of their players – notably Ian Bell, who has been left out of the limited-overs squads – travelling to Sri Lanka ahead of the rest of the party to acclimatise to the pitches and conditions. It is possible that Bell will be able to represent a local side in Sri Lankan domestic competition, as have the likes of Varun Chopra and Moeen Ali in recent weeks.

Police expect delay in Roebuck inquest

The circumstances surrounding the death of Peter Roebuck, the well-known cricket journalist, will probably not be known for another month at the least, police have said, even as details emerged of Roebuck’s last few minutes. Roebuck, 55, committed suicide in Cape Town on Saturday night while being questioned by police over an alleged assault.Colonel Vishnu Naidu of the South African Police Services told Sydney’s paper the inquest could take “anything from six months to two or three years”. On Sunday, he’d told ESPNcricinfo a formal statement would be made after the inquest.”But what is critical here is to get the autopsy reports, or what we call the post-mortem report,” Naidu said. “We will be looking at that first and that can take four to six weeks, sometimes up to eight weeks. When we get that report, we can determine officially what his cause of death was.”There is no crime suspected as far as Mr Roebuck’s death is concerned. If someone dies of unnatural causes and there isn’t suspicion of a crime being committed, then we conduct an inquest.”Details have also emerged of Roebuck’s apparent mental turmoil in the minutes before he ended his life. Roebuck’s colleague Jim Maxwell, whom he had phoned from his hotel room during the questioning, told the – the paper Roebuck worked for – of the scene when he entered the room.Maxwell said he found two policemen in the room, and Roebuck stunned by news he’d been accused of sexual assault.”Peter was in a state of utter despair. He was sitting in a chair, near the window and I can tell you it takes five seconds to open that window,” Maxwell said. ”Given his state of mind, he just had a brain snap. That is all I can assume.”Maxwell was allowed to remain in the room for about two minutes, during which time Roebuck asked him to find a lawyer and contact the students he helps house in Pietermaritzburg, near Durban. Then police told Maxwell to leave.
