Man City ready to take £13m hit to sell star Pep called one of world’s best

Manchester City are reportedly willing to sell a current Etihad ace who Pep Guardiola has described as "one of the best players in the world".

Man City transfer news as Gundogan returns

The Premier League champions are still in the market for potential signings this week, prior to the summer transfer window slamming shut. There has been a significant development at the Etihad in recent days, with Ilkay Gundogan back at the club after a short spell at Barcelona.

The 33-year-old was such an influential figure during his first stint at City, most famously scoring the league-clinching goal at home to Aston Villa back in 2021/22, and while his very best days could arguably be behind him, many supporters will be delighted to see him back.

Away from the Gundogan news, the Cityzens are still being linked with possible additions in the next few days, with Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi perhaps emerging as a surprise target, being seen as a good foil for Erling Haaland in attack. Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer of the Japanese attacker.

Crystal Palace and England maestro Eberechi Eze has also been back to seal a summer move to City, with the Eagles hero a huge talent who could add creativity and end product in attacking areas. His current club will be desperate to keep hold of him, however, having already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich and with Marc Guehi a continued target for Newcastle United.

Man City happy to sell £53m midfielder

According to a fresh update from Football Insider, Manchester City are happy to sell midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer, following the return of Gundogan. The situation makes Nunes an expendable figure moving forward, and the Sky Blues are "willing to accept an offer" of £40m or a loan deal for the Portugal international despite spending £53m on his signature.

Selling Nunes does feel like the right decision by City now that Gundogan is back in the fold, with the former Wolves man struggling to set the world alight ever since joining. The £130,000-a-week ace is clearly a big talent, which is summed up by the fact that Guardiola called him "one of the best players in the world today" before he moved to the Etihad, having come up against him for Sporting CP in the Champions League.

Nunes has only featured for one minute of action in his side's first two Premier League matches this season, and with Gundogan now providing further competition for places, it is hard not to see him warming the substitutes' bench for much of the season.

Pep hit the jackpot with Man City star whose value has soared by 3,700%

The Cityzens have unearthed a star in the making with the young defender.

ByDan Emery Aug 26, 2024

The 25-year-old will surely feel that a move away would be beneficial to him, rather than wasting the best years of his career, so the best outcome for all parties would be to see an exit sealed before the end of deadline day on Friday, even if it's a loan switch to begin with.

'Strip him of the No.10!' – Ansu Fati brutally told his 'career is over already' as Barcelona confirm crushing new injury blow for attacker once dubbed 'the next Lionel Messi'

Fans have piled on Barcelona winger Ansu Fati following the news that he has suffered another injury blow in the latest setback to his career.

Ansu out with hamstring injuryWinger sidelined for a monthFans say his Barca career is overFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Ansu was tipped to become a hero at Barcelona after he graduated from the club's youth academy, breaking records as the team's youngest-ever scorer in La Liga at the age of 16. However, he missed almost the entirety of the 2020-21 season with an injury and has not been able to secure a place as a regular starter for the Spanish giants. He was sent out on loan to Brighton last season, where he started in just three of his 19 Premier League appearances.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Ansu's return to Barcelona has not gone to plan as he missed the first few weeks of the season with an injury and has been largely used as a substitute since, starting one La Liga match under Hansi Flick. The situation grew worse on Wednesday when the club confirmed he faces another four weeks out after sustaining a hamstring injury, prompting negative reactions from some.

WHAT FANS ARE SAYING

One social media user demanded Ansu be given a new shirt number, having inherited his from club icon Lionel Messi, saying: "Strip him off the number 10 ASAP."

"His career is over already," @mideszn029 wrote. "Time to wrap it up." Another supporter predicted: "This is probably his last ever season at Barca."

Gunnerssociety chimed in with: "Barcelona should let Ansu Fati leave the club immediately", and Kushy Blake added: "He should leave the football before the football leaves him. Calling him washed at this point is a disrespect to soap and water!"

Offer made: Spurs make move to sign "monster" Porro rival

After a few weeks of relative silence, Tottenham Hotspur made their first big splash in the transfer window this week.

Ange Postecoglou looks set to welcome Leeds United's highly-rated wonderkid Archie Gray in a £30m deal to become the club's first permanent signing of the window.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

However, there's no rest for the wicked, and based on recent reports, the latest player touted for a move to the club plays in a position Gray starred in last season and could be the perfect rival for Pedro Porro.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Italy, Tottenham are one of several clubs keen on Fiorentina's exciting young right-back, Michael Kayode, and have already seen an offer rejected.

Michael Kayode tussling with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

The report claims that Aston Villa have also made an unsuccessful bid for the 19-year-old talent.

The good news for the Lilywhites is that the Serie A side would supposedly listen to offers in the region of €25m, which converts to around £21m.

It wouldn't be a cheap transfer to get over the line, but given his age and the way he's spoken about, it's a transfer worth pursuing, especially as he could rival Porro for a place in the team.

Why Kayode would be a good rival to Porro

Now, at just 19 years old and with one full season of topflight football under his belt, it would be incredibly unfair to expect Kayode to come into the Spurs team and immediately dislodge Porro after an impressive season in which he returned 11 goals and assists in 37 games.

However, he could provide a challenge and, in turn, become Postecoglou's goto backup for the right-back position ahead of Emerson Royal – should he not leave, that is.

Moreover, respected data analyst Ben Mattinson described the youngster as a full-back who was "complete defensively" last year, suggesting that he could be the perfect complement to Porro's slightly more attacking and expressive nature when the club needs to defend a lead.

Mattinson goes on to expand on what makes the Italian such a "1v1 & duel monster," explaining that he "jockeys attackers to delay the threat & force a decision," which is an impressive skill to master for a player of his age.

With that said, how do his underlying numbers currently stack up to the Lilywhites' two right-back options?

Well, the clear winner is unsurprisingly the former Sporting CP ace, but in a positive sign, the Fiorentina star comes out ahead in several metrics, including progressive carries, crosses into the penalty area, and successful take-ons. He's also dispossessed the least and makes the fewest errors that lead to a shot, all per 90.

Moreover, when looking at his numbers in comparison to Royal's, he does come out on top in the majority of statistics, suggesting that he would, at the bare minimum, be an upgrade on the Brazilian.

Ultimately, signing youngsters from other leagues is always going to be a gamble, but with how he is spoken about and the impressive underlying numbers, Kayode looks like he'd be a great signing to come in and really push Porro over the coming years.

Australia and BBL players have been moved to NSW after border restrictions were imposed on South Australia

A mass airlift of Australia, Australia A and Big Bash League players into New South Wales has been successfully completed to avoid Cricket Australia having its summer plans severely disrupted by border restrictions imposed on South Australia due to a developing Covid-19 outbreak in the state. While the number of new cases in SA dipped promisingly to five on Tuesday after 14 on Monday that were traced to an outbreak in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, CA and the BBL clubs moved rapidly to ensure all players left the affected state and also Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania after all three state governments imposed quarantine restrictions on SA.These moves, including a charter flight specifically to transport all players and staff from the Adelaide Strikers to a training camp in Coffs Harbour, will allow for Australia players to prepare freely for the looming white-ball series against India, plus Australia A players preparing for warm-up games against Virat Kohli’s touring side and also the Strikers and other SA-based BBL players ahead the tournament’s scheduled early-December start in Hobart. This meant rushed farewells to family and friends for the likes of Test captain Tim Paine, Matthew Wade, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Cameron Green, but ensured smooth progression of the summer even if the SA outbreak continues to grow. SA’s border remains open to NSW and Victoria, and CA maintains that Adelaide Oval will host the first Test of the summer against India from December 17 onwards.”CA has taken a proactive approach and mobilised a number of people across the country over the past 24 hours to shore up our men’s domestic and international schedules,” CA’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley said. “I would like to thank the players and staff for their understanding regarding the changes to their travel schedules and for their commitment to ensuring the summer of cricket is a huge success.”I would also like to thank the various leadership groups across Australian cricket for coming together over the past 48 hours and taking quick, decisive action – made possible by thorough, cross-department contingency planning. CA will continue to monitor the situation in South Australia and the resulting border restrictions around the country.”As ever, we will remain agile in addressing the challenges presented by the pandemic and remain more confident than ever of hosting a safe and successful summer across all formats.”

Ibrahima Konate makes his feelings clear on Instagram after former club RB Leipzig honour Dominik Szoboszlai but not him before Liverpool clash

In Liverpool's narrow 1-0 win over RB Leipzig, Konate returned to his old stomping ground alongside Szoboszlai. However, while the Hungarian received a warm tribute from his former employers, the defender was conspicuously left out of any formal recognition.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Szoboszlai spent three seasons with the Bundesliga side before moving to Liverpool. His contribution to the team was marked with praise and a formal gesture that saw the club present him with a special memento – a symbolic Red Bull statue – in acknowledgement of his time with the club.

WHAT KONATE SAID

Meanwhile, Konate played a crucial role during his four seasons at RB Leipzig from 2017 to 2021. During his time with the German outfit, he helped the team to consistently secure top-three finishes in the Bundesliga and was part of the squad that reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, an accomplishment that remains one of the club’s most significant to date.

The fact that Konate spent more time at the club than Szoboszlai and played a key role in their defensive line made the absence of any recognition for him all the more surprising. Taking to social media, the French defender left a cryptic message in response to RB Leipzig's Instagram post celebrating Szoboszlai, simply writing ‘…’, a subtle yet telling response to being ignored by his former club.

"I’m hearing" – Fabrizio Romano shares new manager update out of Man Utd

Manchester United remain in managerial limbo with Erik ten Hag, but may be edging closer to a decision on that front ahead of the summer transfer window.

FA Cup win for Ten Hag gives Ratcliffe a headache

A 2-1 win over Manchester City at Wembley appears to have bought Ten Hag some time. Reports ahead of the showpiece claimed that the club were ready to sack the Dutchman in the wake of the game, but a surprise win has seemingly forced the hierarchy to reconsider since, and Ten Hag has remained in charge of the club.

It is still as yet unclear whether this was a permanent stay, or simply a stay of execution for the former Ajax boss following an awful Premier League season which saw them finish eighth, but Ten Hag was keen to stress that perhaps the Red Devils need him as much as the other way round.

"The team is progressing, and we are winning trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad. Three finals is not bad, but we have to keep going. I'm not satisfied with it", he explained after the game.

"We have to do better and if they don't want me anymore, then I'll go anywhere else to win trophies because that is what I have done my whole career."

His words may well have resonated with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, if the latest report is anything to go by.

The latest from Old Trafford

Now, reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the situation remains "quite open", with Manchester United still eyeing up alternative managers as they try to plot a course this summer, but as yet, not having decided to sack Ten Hag.

The Red Devils were thought to be among the clubs keen on Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna, but he has since signed a new contract at Portman Road to keep him at the East Anglian outfit this summer.

Beyond him, United have also been linked with moves for Roberto de Zerbi and Mauricio Pochettino, as well as England boss Gareth Southgate, though no progress has been made on deals for any of them.

As per Romano, though, talks continue behind the scenes, with the transfer guru explaining to GiveMeSport in the last 24 hours:

“The internal review is still ongoing, so Erik ten Hag is waiting for Manchester United to communicate their decision. Let's see as also in the last three to four days, I'm hearing that Manchester United had new conversations with some agents and representatives of other managers."

“So the situation remains quite open. I think they are assessing all the potential options in order to decide whether it's better to continue with Ten Hag or go for another manager.”

Hardly a show of faith in Ten Hag, the current situation appears to be one of hedging their bets, with United keen to court another manager but not lose their current boss in case they fail to lure another name into the Old Trafford hot seat this summer. However, with the summer transfer window opening soon, more clarity may be forthcoming on the situation in the days to come.

Paul Coughlin, Ned Eckersley share record-breaking stand for Durham

Paul Coughlin and Ned Eckersley shared a record-breaking stand for Durham on a frustrating rain-affected day for North Group leaders Derbyshire in the Bob Willis Trophy match at Emirates Riverside. The pair took their seventh-wicket stand to 157 in 49 overs, a Durham record against Derbyshire, before Matt Critchley bowled Coughlin for a career-best 90 from 146 balls. The leg-spinner then bowled Matty Potts two balls later but Eckersley was unbeaten on 78 with Durham 337 for 9 when rain arrived shortly after lunch, wiping out 57 overs from the day’s allocation.Derbyshire would have expected to restrict Durham to a lot less when the day began but their bowling lacked intensity and the second new ball failed to trouble Coughlin and Eckersley.Coughlin had set the tone by taking advantage of wide balls from Ben Aitchison to drive two fours, the second one taking him to his first 50 of the season and the eighth of his career from 75 balls.A lofted drive at Ed Barnes only just cleared a leaping Billy Godleman at mid off and Eckersley survived an lbw appeal on 40 when he played across the line at Sam Connors but there were few other alarms for the pair.Eckersley’s 50, his first of the summer, was a more sedate affair and contained only one four but it had helped shift the momentum Durham’s way after Derbyshire reduced them to 155 for 6 shortly after tea on day one.The previous highest seventh-wicket stand against Derbyshire of 130, which also featured Coughlin with Paul Collingwood three years ago, was comfortably passed and a century was beckoning for the all-rounder when Critchley was introduced two overs before lunch. His third ball tempted Coughlin into a cut but he played on and Potts went two balls later when Critchley turned one past his forward defensive push.Matthew Salisbury edged Barnes to first slip in the first over after lunch but Eckersley struck the seamer for two consecutive fours before the weather had the final say.
