Lancashire wrapped up a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Northamptonshire after just 16 balls and eight minutes of the final day of their Division Two match at Emirates Old Trafford.Needing 16 runs to win after they had bowled out Northamptonshire for 200 an over before close of play on the third day, the Red Rose made light work of the modest target with Haseeb Hameed and Keaton Jennings both left unbeaten when victory and 21 points were secured.Jennings, who scored 97 in Lancashire’s first innings, eased his way four runs while opening partner Hameed registered the only boundaries of the day with a crisp on drive off Josh Cobb’s first over before he twice hit Luke Procter to the fence in consecutive balls to seal the win and finish unbeaten on 13.The win, Lancashire’s first in Manchester since the final game of the 2017 season, means skipper Dane Villas’ side have claimed victories in their first two fixtures of the new campaign as they look for a quick return to Division One following relegation last season.Northamptonshire, who finish the game with three points, are yet to register a win in their first three games following draws in their opening two fixtures against Middlesex and Glamorgan.Lancashire face Worcestershire in another home game on Monday while Northamptonshire play Sussex at the County Ground.

Wants to quit: "Fantastic" Rangers player “really” looking to leave Ibrox

A "fantastic" Rangers player now reportedly wants to leave Ibrox before the end of the January transfer window, a fresh report has claimed.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have been linked with so many different players this month, as Philippe Clement looks to complete what could be some important transfer business come the end of the season.

In recent weeks, it has seemed abundantly clear that left-back is a key area of the pitch being targeted, potentially because both Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic have been backed to complete moves away from Ibrox in 2024. A host of players have emerged as possible additions on the left-hand side of Clement's defence, including Liverpool youngster Owen Beck, who has experience of the Scottish Premiership after enjoying a loan spell at Dundee earlier in the season.

The 21-year-old is far more Rangers' only potential target, however, with Bristol City left-back Cameron Pring and Hellas Verona ace Josh Doig also options to come in and freshen things, although the latter is close to a move to Sassuolo.

Other positions are also being looked at by the Gers, including in attack, where Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland is believed to be wanted, as he continues to enjoy an impressive season in Scotland.

Now, a key exit rumour has emerged at Rangers regarding one figure, as his time at the club threatens to come to an end in the coming weeks.

Ridvan Yilmaz wants Rangers exit

According to journalist Burhan Can Terzi [via Ibrox News], Ridvan Yilmaz is looking to leave Rangers in January, as he "really wants to come to Galatasaray."

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz.

It does feel highly likely that the 22-year-old will head off to pastures new before the end of the month, with too many reports linking him to a move away from the Gers.

He clearly feels as though he needs a fresh challenge, perhaps due to not being a regular starter, but given his age and long-term potential, it will be disappointing to see him go. This is someone who has been lauded as "fantastic" by This Is Ibrox podcast – they have also called him "superb" – so it would arguably be preferable to see him stay.

Assuming Yilmaz does move on, however, it is imperative that the right man comes in, so Clement will need to weigh up who represents the best option, whether it be the exciting youthfulness of Beck on loan, or a more established player like Pring, who has experience in English football, but is still only admittedly 25 years of age.

There is also the threat that Barisic leaves as well, of course, and should that happen, Rangers may have to bring in a couple of new faces at left-back, ensuring they have enough strong options there in the title race.

The Gers are still seeking attacking reinforcements.

Losing two established players in the same position could be a concern, though, threatening to disrupt the rhythm in Clement's squad, so the hope could be that Barisic remains at Ibrox until at least the end of the season.

Elriesa Theunissen-Fourie dies in road accident

Elriesa Theunissen-Fourie, the former South Africa women’s allrounder, died in a road accident on April 5.Theunissen-Fourie, who would have turned 26 on May 2, played three ODIs and one T20I for South Africa, all in 2013. She was part of South Africa’s squad for the Women’s World Cup in 2013, and made her ODI debut against Sri Lanka women in Cuttack. She last played for South Africa in a series against Bangladesh Women in September that year.In domestic cricket, she represented the North West Dragons and was described by Cricket South Africa as “very active at the grassroots level, coaching at the local community hub until she had to take maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child”.CSA said she died in a “motor car accident in Stilfontein, North West. The life of her child was also lost in the accident.””This is a dreadful tragedy in the true sense of that word,” CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe said. “This is devastating news for all of us. Elriesa did so much for the community in which she lived and gave excellent service both as a national player of note and in the work she did at grassroots level to help in the less fortunate communities.”On behalf of the CSA family I extend our deepest sympathy to her husband, Rudy, her family, friends and all her cricketing colleagues.”

Reeza Hendricks and Theunis de Bruyn handed South Africa contracts

Reeza Hendricks and Theunis de Bruyn have been given national contracts for the 2019-20 season by Cricket South Africa, while the retired AB de Villiers, JP Duminy,Imran Tahir and Chris Morris have been omitted from the list for different reasons.CSA named 16 men in the list, covering the 2019 50-over World Cup, men’s away tours to India – in October 2019 and March 2020 – the home series against England next year, and the white-ball series at home against Australia. For the women, 14 of whom have been contracted, the major events covered were the T20 World Cup in early 2020 as well as ICC Women’s Championship series against Pakistan at home and away in India and New Zealand.

Contracted players

Men: Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Reeza Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn
Women: Trisha Chetty, Mignon du Preez, Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Lizelle Lee, Sune Luus, Zintle Mali, Raisibe Ntozakhe, Tumi Sekhukhune, Chloe Tryon, Dane van Niekerk, Laura Wolvaardt.

Hendricks and de Bruyn were not previously awarded full contracts but, as a CSA statement said, they “were upgraded to a full contract after reaching the necessary threshold during the course of the current season”.”We have contracted 16 men’s players and 14 women’s players which we feel is the appropriate number to maintain our national squads across the various formats,” CSA CEO Thabang Moroe said. “This enables us to contract both our Test players as well as those who are limited overs specialists.”Of the men left out, in the case of the soon-to-be-40 Tahir, there’s a bit of a question mark over his long-term future in international cricket, with the legspinner likely to call time on his career after the World Cup.Duminy, 34, has had to deal with a series of injuries in recent times, and last played a competitive game back in October 2018, leading to some uncertainly over his presence in the national team. The left-hand batsman also underwent surgery to address an injury on his right shoulder late last year.As for 31-year-old allrounder Morris, while he has been playing for Titans in the South African domestic circuit and featured in South Africa’s home T20I series against Pakistan earlier this year, there are doubts about his form as well as fitness.Among the women, the list included Raisibe Ntozakhe, the 22-year-old offspinner who was suspended for an illegal bowling action prior to last year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Arsenal star who was "everywhere" vs Burnley was better than Trossard

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a dogged display against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta's side emerging 3-1 victors despite the visitors' valiant efforts.

Having fallen to defeat against Newcastle United on Tyneside last week, Arsenal secured three points today courtesy of goals from Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko, now level on points with league leaders Manchester City, who play Chelsea tomorrow.

In the absence of Gabriel Jesus, who has now missed the past three Premier League fixtures with a hamstring injury, Eddie Nketiah has deputised up front but was removed today after his "anonymous" presence against the Magpies, with Trossard given the nod instead.

Leandro Trossard's performance vs Burnley

Trossard's dynamism proved to be crucial in unlocking a disciplined Burnley backline, who stifled much of Arsenal's attacking advances in the first half before the Belgian found the back of the net right before the break with a brave-headed effort.

Adding to his strike with a fine assist after his looping corner met Saliba's head before the hour mark, Trossard has proved his worth once again and now boasts six goals and two assists from just seven starting appearances across all competitions this term.

Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard.

The 28-year-old also hit the woodwork, took 51 touches, completed 79% of his passes, created two key passes and won four duels, as per Sofascore.

In his post-match player ratings, football.london's Arsenal correspondent Kaya Kaynak handed the star an 8/10 score, writing: 'Seems to bring the best out of those around him when he plays up top. Martinelli looks more comfortable while his link with Saka is superb. Another goal and assist today.'

It was a stellar showing, but perhaps not the best of Arteta's men on the night; that award goes to Zinchenko, who was sensational in his all-encompassing work for the home side.

Oleksandr Zinchenko's stats vs Burnley

The Ukranian star signed for Arsenal from Manchester City in a £32m package last year, and while he has not always been fit, he has been integral in many of the club's resounding performances.

While the victory over the Clarets was not quite a trademark display, it was a testament to Arsenal's ability to get the job done and Zinchenko was the veritable engine charging the whole affair.

Remarked at being "everywhere today" by Gunners reporter Connor Humm, the £150k-per-week left-back scored a stunning goal to consolidate the victory after Saliba restored the lead in the second half.

But his exploits were so much more than just his goalscoring contribution, remarkably taking 116 touches, completing 87% of his passes, winning a staggering 14 duels, placing two key passes, succeeding with all seven of his long ball attempts, and getting stuck in with a whopping five tackles.

Kaynak was effusive in his praise for Trossard and matched his words for Zinchenko, stating: 'One superb flick to free space for Bukayo Saka in the first half. Showed equally superb technique when firing home Arsenal's third.'

As has often been the case for Burnley this season, they didn't actually play too badly but succumbed to defeat regardless, and had Zinchenko's omnipresence not been at Arteta's disposal the chances of success would undoubtedly have slimmed.

It was a formidable show of strength from the dynamic force, and Zinchenko has reminded the Premier League of his talent with a talismanic performance today.

Siddhesh Lad confident Mumbai can thrive on seaming pitches

With the Ranji Trophy clash between Mumbai and Baroda at the Wankhede Stadium ending in a draw, Mumbai’s stand-in captain Siddhesh Lad is now wishing for only two things: result-oriented seaming pitches, and the return of frontline quicks Dhawal Kulkarni – also captain – and Shardul Thakur. With Mumbai’s chances of making the knockouts hanging by a thread, Lad’s desperation was understandable. Currently on eight points from five matches, Mumbai need three outright wins to give themselves a chance of qualifying. While two of those matches, against Saurashtra and Chhattisgarh, are at the Wankhede, Mumbai have not been particularly prolific playing at home this season, only managing a high-scoring draw against Baroda after suffering a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of Gujarat. But despite that earlier loss, Lad is hopeful that the surfaces for the upcoming matches are more like the one against Gujarat, where the quicks took 26 off the 31 wickets that fell.”Our bowlers are back in form, they are bowling well, if we get a good seaming wicket in the next game we will definitely win,” Lad said.”It’s not in our hands because we have a neutral curator but we believe that at least the wicket like we had during the Mumbai-Gujarat game, if we have that, our bowlers are bowling really well now.”Lad should know the fate of his other wish over the next couple of days when the team for the Saurashtra clash is announced. Shardul had sustained a thigh injury during the second Test against West Indies which required him to undergo rehab for at least seven weeks, while Dhawal had injured his ankle, ruling him out of Mumbai’s previous two matches. That Dhawal rolled his arm over on the sidelines after day three against Baroda indicated that the swelling on his ankle had reduced, if not completely subsided.”I’m hoping that Dhawal and Shardul will be back in the next game or maybe in the Nagpur game,” Lad said.”The team will be selected maybe tomorrow or day after once we get the update from Dhawal, Shardul and Tushar (Deshpande), but Tushar might not be fit before the next game, mostly Nagpur.”

"I’m told" – Romano says Tottenham have eyes on an "interesting" £39m star

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared some Tottenham Hotspur transfer news as Spurs cast their eyes on an "interesting" £39m star

Spurs striker targets

The departure of star forward and club-record goalscorer Harry Kane has scarcely been noticed so far. Instead of suffering without their former talisman, Spurs have reinvented themselves as a more fluid attacking team, with new captain Son Heung-min thriving in a more central role. Tottenham, after their latest 2-1 win on Friday night, have extended their unbeaten run to 10 games; winning eight of them in a real statement to the rest of the Premier League.

New manager Ange Postecoglou is seemingly transforming the club, and things haven't looked better than this for quite a long time. However, despite thriving without a traditional number nine of Kane's ilk, there have been suggestions that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and incoming new transfer chief Johan Lange could still sign a new striker next year.

Tottenham are interested in Brentford's Ivan Toney, for instance, who looks set to become one of the hottest commodities in English football once he returns from his ban for alleged gambling breaches. Spurs are eyeing Feyenoord forward Santiago Gimenez as well, according to recent reports, with one agent even saying this week that Spurs are among the "closest" sides to getting him.

Gimenez really "interesting" Tottenham

Now, a very reliable transfer source in Romano has shared his own update on the matter. While he confirms that Gimenez is being watched by Spurs, things don't appear as advanced as previously suggested. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalis backs that he's a player really "interesting" Postecoglou's side. Romano also says that Gimenez could leave for just £39 million.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

“We know very well that many top clubs around Europe are keeping an eye on the boy,” said Romano.

“From what I’m hearing, something around €45million (£39million) could be the right fee to make it happen. Let’s see if (it’s) in the January window or in the summer window it depends on Feyenoord, more than on the player. The interest of many clubs is there. I think we saw Tottenham linked, because from what I’m told, Tottenham scouts have been following the player already last year.

“While they were following the manager (Slot) they saw that Santi Gimenez is absolutely a very good striker. So Santi Gimenez for sure is a player interesting for Tottenham, but also for many other clubs around Europe, and this is why decisions will be made in the next months. But at the moment, no statement from people close to the player and the only person (handling his transfer business) is the father.”

The 22-year-old has stood out as one of Europe's most in-form strikers this season. Scoring 13 goals and notching a further three assists, his tender age and pedigree could make his reported £39 million valuation a price really worth paying. Gimenez's departure from the Netherlands is surely one to watch as we head into 2024.

The Dutch manager emphasized the pivotal role of Old Trafford's unwavering support in propelling the team towards victory and securing a last-four berth at the expense of a high-flying Liverpool. Highlighting the historical dominance of United at home against Liverpool in the FA Cup, with no losses recorded for over a century, Ten Hag tried to instil confidence in the Red Devils' ability to triumph once again.

In his column for the matchday programme, United Review, Ten Hag wrote: "Just as we need our players on top form, the same is true of our fans. The challenge to you is to help us make the most of our home advantage in the last cup game to be played at Old Trafford this season. Cup games are do-or-die and we need the players and fans to give energy to each other if we are to progress to the semi-finals. The prizes on offer today are huge: a return to Wembley, a step closer to a major trophy and a win over our biggest rivals. To achieve those goals, everybody inside Old Trafford has a part to play, working as one big team. Together, we are a formidable force."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag also invoked the memorable 2-1 triumph in the previous Premier League season at Old Trafford to further boost the morale of his troops.

"This fixture always demands concentration, calm and confidence," he explained.

"Every player, whether in the starting XI or on the bench, has a job to do and has to take responsibility for doing it correctly.

"We also had incredible support from the stands when we beat Liverpool at Old Trafford last season and we know, from that experience and other big games, what a difference the fans can make when we really bring the noise.

"I don’t need to explain to anybody the significance and size of this game. We have the two greatest clubs in English football, with the greatest pedigree and the greatest rivalry, facing each other in a knockout tie in the world’s greatest cup competition. When you are a child watching football, these are the games that make you fall in love with the sport; how could anybody not be excited to be a part of this spectacle?"

Chelsea’s £75k-p/w gem who lost possession 20x today was Poch’s bright spark

Chelsea looked like they were making progress having secured some positive results throughout the previous few weeks, but they were shocked by Brentford this afternoon.

The Blues had secured seven points out of nine in the last three Premier League matches, but Thomas Frank’s men stood firm and grabbed a 2-0 victory, meaning the Bees have won all three trips to Stamford Bridge since being promoted to the top flight in 2021.

Chelsea fail to continue their unbeaten run

The first half saw Chelsea dominate possession while also taking eight more shots than the away side, and it looked as though it was only a matter of time before someone opened the scoring.

Brentford went ahead with just over 30 minutes remaining courtesy of an Ethan Pinnock header before Bryan Mbeumo doubled their advantage during the dying embers of the match.

Mauricio Pochettino gave starts to Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, yet the duo failed to get a shot on target during the match, while they made only two key passes combined, displaying a lack of cutting edge that the Argentinian would have been hoping for.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss also deployed Cole Palmer in his favoured position of attacking midfield, and he was certainly pulling the strings for the Blues this afternoon, despite the defeat.

Cole Palmer continues to impress for Chelsea

The youngster opened the scoring against Arsenal last weekend, and while dropping slightly deeper today, he was still able to exude his talents.

He ran the show during the first half, with Statman Dave stating he was a “tidy, tidy player” due to the fact he made 22 final third passes, played three key passes and created a big chance, which unfortunately didn’t result in a goal for the home side.

The £75k-per-week gem showed once again why Pochettino signed him from Manchester City during the summer transfer window, and he could be an integral part of the team this term.

His Sofascore rating of 8/10 was also the highest on the Chelsea side, and he was always looking to get involved, taking 99 touches during the match, while succeeding with five of his seven long ball attempts and making four key passes.

The defensive side to his game could do with some work, however, as he lost possession 20 times in total, yet nobody will fault him for taking chances and trying to make things happen. The youngster also won just 20% of his total duels, and it could take some time for him to develop into a physically opposing player.

The more he plays for Chelsea, the better he will become, and the 21-year-old has already made a fine start, registering four goal contributions across just eight games and the future looks extremely bright.

The Blues will need to start from square one again following their loss today, but with a talent such as Palmer controlling proceedings for large parts of the game, Pochettino will surely be buoyed for the future and what he could bring to the team over the coming weeks.
