Ten Hag must unleash Man Utd star who can run "Brighton ragged"

The 2023/24 season has been a very disappointing campaign for Manchester United, who are currently eighth in the Premier League. They can finish no higher than sixth place, which Chelsea occupy at the moment, although they would have to turn over an outrageous goal difference to do so.

The Red Devils currently have 57 points, equal to that of Newcastle United, who they beat 3-2 in their most recent game. If results go their way, the Old Trafford outfit can reach seventh place and qualify for the Europa Conference League – should they beat Brighton and Hove Albion.

It has also been something of a mixed-bag season for their biggest stars, too. Bruno Fernandes has had an impressive campaign, and has the most goal involvements by any United player this term, with 18 in the Premier League.

Youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have also had a strong time of things this season. 19-year-old Mainoo has played 28 games for the first team, scoring four times and registering one assist. Garnacho has featured in 48 games, getting on the scoresheet nine times and registering five assists.

The academy pair have shown up a fair few of their senior colleagues it's fair to say, but one high-profile star will be hoping to finish the season strongly against the Seagulls, alongside Fernandes and co.

Marcus Rashford's season in numbers

The player in question here is United and England winger, Marcus Rashford. The 26-year-old is one of the most destructive wingers in world football but has not found his feet in the 2023/24 season.

In 41 games in all competitions for United, Rashford has scored just eight goals, of which seven have come in the Premier League, and has just five assists. This is a far cry from his 2022/23 exploits when he scored 30 goals and registered ten assists in 56 games in all competitions.

Like many of his teammates, Rashford has struggled with an injury at the back end of the season. This has caused him to be unavailable for the past few United games, but he did make an appearance off the bench against Newcastle on Wednesday.

Interestingly, that was Rashford’s 400th appearance for the club, a span of games during which he has scored 131 goals and registered 64 assists.

After a spell on the sidelines recently, Erik ten Hag could well reinstate Rashford in the starting lineup for a game against one of his favourite opponents later today…

Rashford’s record against Brighton

United travel down to the South Coast to face Brighton at the Amex for their Premier League finale. Of course, it is not their last game of the season, with the FA Cup final against Manchester City the weekend after.

Indeed, Rashford’s record against Brighton is impressive. He has scored four goals in 12 Premier League appearances at the Seagulls. Arguably the best of the bunch came at the Amex, where he got on the end of a superb trivela pass from Fernandes, before cutting in from the left-hand side, chopping inside and away from two oncoming defenders before firing home.

United’s number ten certainly has the potential to hurt Roberto De Zerbi's side again this weekend, having previously run "Brighton ragged", as journalist Liam Canning described it, when the two sides met earlier this season. Whilst Rashford has not been at his best in 2023/24, there is no doubting his lethal ability when in full flow.

With the ball at his feet, the Englishman is deadly. According to FBref, per 90 minutes this season, Rashford averages 3.38 progressive carries which places him in the top 4%, 2.11 final third carries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 5%, and 2.45 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 2%. He is deadly with the ball at his feet, and could well provide United with a cutting edge driving in from the left-hand side.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

It makes sense for Rashford to start against Brighton. Not only does he have a good record against them, he will likely be a key player against City in the FA Cup final, so giving him a start at the Amex will help build match sharpness. The hope will be that he can once again wreak havoc alongside Fernandes, who also has four goals – and two assists – against the Seagulls to date.

Not only that, but Garnacho struggled last time out and has looked tired of late on the left flank, receiving just a 5/10 match rating from the Manchester Evening News in midweek; this is no surprise given he has started all of United's Premier League games since 11 November.

This certainly seems like the perfect game to reintroduce Rashford to the starting lineup, and Ten Hag will no doubt be hoping he can have his usual explosive impact against Brighton.

Ten Hag must ditch Eriksen & unleash Man Utd ace who “loves a goal”

After defeating Sheffield United 4-2 on Wednesday evening, Manchester United welcome their second relegation-threatened side to Old Trafford today.

The side attempting to defeat Erik ten Hag’s team is Vincent Kompany’s Burnley, who still have a very real chance of staying in the division amid a recent upturn in form.

Nonetheless, the expectation for the Red Devils will be to display another convincing performance to the one against the Blades, minus the goals conceded.

In order for that to occur, a similar team must be fielded, but one player has to replace Christian Eriksen, who struggled in the week.

Why Eriksen must drop out of the side

Eriksen’s involvement over the last few months has been minimal, with his first start since January coming on Wednesday.

Although it wasn’t a disastrous showing, his performance was that of a player who’d had very few minutes, with Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst handing him a 5/10 rating.

The Dane was as technically comfortable as always, but he lacked any real intensity both on the ball and off it, making just one key pass out of his 56 completed.

Eriksen also offered absolutely nothing from a defensive standpoint, winning just one out of three duels, making one tackle, and being dribbled past once.

The 32-year-old was withdrawn just after the hour mark, and his replacement on the evening should return to the team this afternoon.

Why McTominay has to be unleashed against Burnley

Scott McTominay is the definition of a Marmite player; you either love him or loathe him, but there’s no denying that he’s stepped up when needed this season.

The Scottish midfielder has only started 15 Premier League matches this season, despite making 28 appearances, but his influence on the side has been huge, especially from the bench.

The 27-year-old has had some injury issues in recent weeks that stemmed from a problem in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, hence why he didn’t start against the Blades last time out.

However, McTominay has the exact profile that’s needed against a team like Burnley, and he could be key to helping the Red Devils pick up three points today.

As you can see from his average statistics in the Premier League this season compared to Eriksen’s, he’s a completely different profile from the number 14.

The number 39 is far less likely to impact the game from a creativity standpoint and even in terms of control, but what could make him pivotal this weekend is his ability to influence the game in the final third.

United legend Rio Ferdinand said that McTominay is a player who “loves a goal,” and his record really does speak for itself, as he’s netted seven times in the league, the joint-third most in the squad.

McTominay has become a master of making late runs into the box and being in the right place at the right time, and against a low block like Burnley, his movement could be the game-changer.

Unlike every other United player, bar Harry Maguire, McTominay provides a huge threat in the air, which will make the hosts much more dangerous from set pieces and crosses, and with the majority of space inevitably being in wide zones, that’ll be particularly key.

Furthermore, the United academy graduate does provide more defensive support than Eriksen, which will in turn make Ten Hag’s side more defensively secure and prepared for counterattacks.

Overall, although McTominay is hardly an undroppable figure in the side, he’s perfect for a fixture like today’s, and therefore, he simply has to start.

Ten Hag’s “passenger” shouldn't play for Man Utd again after 5/10 display

The midfielder was subbed off early by Erik ten Hag.

'More important than signing Nico Williams' – Ronald Koeman blames Barcelona's downfall on treatment of legends 'like Lionel Messi, Xavi and me' but reveals dream of returning to Spanish club

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, the 61-year-old is unlikely to return to the Blaugrana while president Joan Laporta remains in charge of the club as it was under the current chief's tenure that Koeman was shown the door as Barcelona boss in 2021.

However, Koeman remains critical of the Camp Nou side and feels that their mistreatment of legends such as himself, Xavi and Lionel Messi is to blame for their recent struggles, suggesting changing that mentality is more important than pursuing top players, such as Spain star Nico Williams.

  • WHAT RONALD KOEMAN SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Dutch coach said: "I have a dream to return to Barcelona, but it won't be as a coach. I want to help players improve their technique. Barca's problem in recent years has been that people like Lionel Messi, Xavi and me have left. It is better to respect the club legends. That is more important than competing for players like Nico Williams."

FAQs – What happens if World Test Championship final ends in a draw or tie?

We get two winners. Here’s everything you need to know about the tournament that will bring new meaning and context to bilateral Test cricket

Nagraj Gollapudi29-Jul-2019What is this World Test Championship all about?Essentially, it is a league, like the zillions of T20 leagues out there, but this one is for Test cricket. It will be contested over two-year cycles, the first of which starts on August 1 with the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston. The group phase officially began on July 16, 2019 and will run until March 31, 2021 after which the top two teams will contest a final. How many teams will participate?Nine of the 12 Full Member countries will contest in 27 series during the window. The nine teams are: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhy has the WTC been brought in?For a long time, there have been attempts to bring additional context to Test cricket beyond the result of individual series. There are the Test rankings where the top team is anointed on April 1 each year, but that is just based a rolling table. The idea of the WTC is to have a Test ‘winner’ every two years – like the World Cups in other formats – creating something else to play for outside of the series result. It is also hoped that it will increase interest in all series within the WTC, regardless of who is playing, because it can have a knock-on effect on other team’s chances of reaching the final. How many series will each team play and do all series count? The teams will play three series each at home and away. Each series will comprise a minimum of two and maximum of five Test matches. Therefore, all the teams do not play each other in the WTC in the two-year cycle. There can also be series played outside the WTC – an example being the New Zealand v England in November which is part of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) but not the Championship.India go into the inaugural Test Championship as the world’s No. 1 team•Getty ImagesWho decided on which series will be played under the WTC?The competing countries. Some of the series already committed in the previous FTP will now be played as part of the WTC with each team playing against some higher-ranked opposition and some lower-ranked opposition. How are points allocated? This is where things get a little complicated because, well, cricket can be complicated. For every series under the WTC, there are 120 points available, distributed evenly over the number of Tests in the series. So, for example, in the Ashes, which is a five-match series, there will be 24 points for each win. In a two-Test series (such as Sri Lanka v New Zealand and West Indies v India which also start in August) there will be 60 points for a win. A draw is worth one-third of the points for a win: so eight in the Ashes scenario above and 20 in a two-Test series. A tie, just in case we need to know, is worth half the points for a win.Ishita Mazumder/ESPNcricinfo LtdAnything else about the points we need to know?Recently the ICC had announced that teams will be docked points in the WTC for slow over-rates. Two points will be deducted for every over a team is behind at the end of a match. How will the finalists be determined and when will it be played? The top two teams on the points table at the end of the league phase will play the final, which will be played from June 10-14, 2021. It will be hosted by the ECB.ALSO READ: ‘We want every game in the Test championship to count,’ says Geoff Allardice, ICC general manager of cricketWhat will happen if the final ends in a draw or is tied?If the final ends in a tie or a draw, the two teams will be joint champions. Although the playing conditions allow for a reserve day, it can only be used if net playing time is lost during the scheduled five days of the final. Net playing time for every Test amounts to 30 hours of play (six hours per day). The reserve day kicks in only if the time lost during regulation play on each day is not made up on the same day. For example, if you lose an hour of play due to rain and then make it up by the end of the same day, then that is zero net time lost. But if you lose an entire day’s play due to rain and then make up, say, only three hours over the remaining four days, then you are short of net playing time for the match. That is when the reserve day kicks in.What about the other three Test-playing nations?Zimbabwe and the two latest Test nations, Afghanistan and Ireland, are the three who will not be part of the inaugural WTC. Zimbabwe are currently suspended by the ICC till October for government interference into cricket affairs. However, Afghanistan and Ireland will play Test series as part of the FTP, points from which will be considered for the Test rankings, but not the Championship.
