Surrey batters turn the screw after Dan Worrall six-for floors Worcestershire

Lawrence, Burns, Smith, Clark half-centuries extend lead past 400 at The Oval

Leaders Surrey are in a strong position to claim their fourth win of the season in the Vitality County Championship after dominating the second day against Worcestershire at the Kia Oval.Dan Worrall wrapped up Worcestershire’s first innings by claiming the last three wickets in five balls to finish with 6 for 22 as Surrey took a lead of 85.Skipper Rory Burns laid the foundations with 70 at the start of Surrey’s second innings and although Worcestershire fought back after lunch with four wickets in eight overs, Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence, who was dropped on four, reasserted Surrey’s control with a fifth-wicket stand of 115 in 29 overs.Smith made 72 before Lawrence and Jordan Clark added further punishment with an unbroken sixth-wicket alliance of 108 as Surrey closed on 342 for 5, a lead of 427.Worrall now has 22 wickets in four games – with power to add in the second innings – after ending Worcestershire’s first innings during a high-class spell at the start of the day from the Vauxhall end.In his fourth over and having bowled a series of inswingers at Joe Leach, he moved one away and Ben Foakes dived in front of first slip to take the edge. Ben Gibbon lost his off bail when the next ball nipped back and although Yadvinder Singh survived the hat-trick he drove airily at his second delivery and Foakes snaffled his 300th first-class catch for Surrey. All out for 128, Worcestershire were up against it, but their seamers bowled with good control with the new ball and Burns and Sibley took no risks and settled for patient accumulation.Sibley’s first six runs came off 50 balls before he doubled his score by hoisting Gibbon off his pads and over the mid-wicket boundary. The partnership was worth 79 from 29 overs when Sibley nicked a fine ball from Singh on a fourth-stump line that left him off the pitch. In the next over Ollie Pope was superbly caught by the diving Nathan Smith at leg slip to reward Gibbon’s wholehearted endeavours and, having claimed his maiden first-class wicket, debutant Singh took his second in his fourth over when Burns, having passed 50 for the fourth time this season, nicked off and was well held low down at slip by Rob Jones.Surrey slipped to 115 for 4 in the 38th over after Foakes missed a straight one from Matthew Waite, but Waite was left shaking his head in frustration when Lawrence was put down on the mid-wicket boundary by Kashif Ali having made just three. It felt like a defining moment in the day and so it proved as the sun came out and Lawrence and Jamie Smith built the lead after tea in the best batting conditions of the match.Smith, playing with increasing freedom, hit 12 fours in a typically enterprising 72 from 109 balls before losing his off stump to Gibbon via an inside edge as he shaped to drive through the covers.Lawrence followed him to fifty – his second of the match – in the next over and the situation was perfect for Clark to go on the attack. He raced to his half-century off 42 balls, including a six over long-off off Ali, as the lead swelled beyond 400 with 160 runs added in the final session. Both will have their eyes on a century in the morning.

Vivianne Miedema leads the way with 100th international goal as Netherlands hand Wales harsh lesson in Euro 2025 opener

Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th international goal as the Netherlands beat European Championship debutants Wales 3-0 in their opening game of the tournament. Wales held out well in the first half until Manchester City striker Miedema broke their hearts in first-half stoppage time with a stunning strike from outside the box. Victoria Pelova doubled the Dutch lead just after half-time after a fine run and pass by Danielle van de Donk, before Esmee Brugts headed home a third goal. Wales had been soundly beaten, but there was still positivity to be found after a landmark day.

Wales began their major tournament debut with a spring in their step and showed their defensive resilience from the first minute. Goalkeeper Olivia Clark was forced into a smart stop from Jill Roord's effort within five minutes, with the Wales shot-stopper getting back to her feet to bravely palm the ball away after her initial save.

The Netherlands enjoyed the lion's share of early possession and territory as was to be expected, but Wales made a couple of rare early forays into Dutch territory just before the 15-minute mark, two dangerous crosses from either wing just eluding a red shirt in the penalty area. Further defending was needed at the other end, Netherlands danger Miedema kept out by one of several important blocks by the Welsh defence.

The woodwork would then keep out the Dutch on 35 minutes, Roord striking powerfully from 25 yards but seeing the ball rebound back off the upright, Clark well beaten. Wales ended the half strongly and were preparing for a positive half-time team talk, but Miedema had other ideas. The 28-year-old struck her landmark goal with just seconds until the break, curling home to break the Welsh resistance.

The lead would be doubled just three minutes after the break thanks to Pelova, before Roord almost sealed victory but saw her strike rebound off the woodwork for the second time, this time the crossbar. That same crossbar would keep out Jackie Groenen's long-range strike, before the Netherlands did add a third through Brugts' stooping header at the far post. The Welsh side went into a huddle in the aftermath of the goal, attempting to get a foothold after the game had slipped out of their grasp.

Roord continued to be thwarted as Clark kept out her fierce hit, before substitute Lineth Beerensteyn tormented the Welsh defence after her late introduction, forcing Clark into another smart save from close range before seeing a goal disallowed for offside from the tightest of angles. The full-time whistle would soon blow and the Netherlands had dealt Wales a harsh lesson, one which they will no doubt learn from as their Euro 2025 journey continues.

Miedema will get the headlines after her stunning strike helped her to an outstanding century of goals for her nation. The Netherlands legend's goal was pure class, as she twisted inside and out before curling into the far corner from outside the box to break the deadlock.

Captain Miedema almost got herself a sensational assist too, dummying to skip past an unsuspecting defender before playing a delicious pass with the outside of her boot through to Roord, who could only see her clipped strike rebound off the crossbar. What makes Miedema's contribution even more impressive is that this was only her second appearance in 11 weeks due to injury. The 28-year-old was replaced in the 71st minute and will hope to be well-rested for her nation's next match against England.

THE BIG LOSER

It feels unfair to single out any Wales player after a valiant display in their first-ever major tournament game. Welsh women's football has been through a lot down the years which led to this moment, including a 50-year ban on women's football in the country which was only lifted in 1970. The first official Wales women's team associated with the FAW was introduced in 1993, and they are now competing in a major European Championship finals just 32 years later. Manager Rhian Wilkinson has earnt legendary status in leading her side to qualification, and they were well in the game until a 15-minute spell either side of half-time sealed victory for the Netherlands. They will be disappointed, but equally proud and confident heading into their next group game.

The Netherlands face England next on Wednesday June 9, in what will be a crunch match for both sides. As for Wales, they face France the same day and will be hoping to get their first-ever major tournament points on the board.

Mikey Moore to the rescue! Spurs star scores late penalty as England kick off Under-19 European Championship with Norway draw

Tottenham ace Mikey Moore converted from the spot to give England U-19s a share of the spoils in their European Championship opener against Norway.

Three goals in frenetic first halfEngland dominated the ball, but Norway broke at paceMikey Moore penalty ties the game in 79th minuteFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱TELL ME MORE

The game set into an entertaining and frenetic pattern from the off. The young Three Lions dominated possession, and were occasionally able to break down a steadfast low block from the Norwegians. When England gave up possession, Norway broke both accurately and at pace.

England took the lead on the 11th minute, with Kadan Young striding through the Norway half before finding fellow winger Tom Watson open at the edge of the box. The Brighton youngster's low driven effort deflected past Daniel Gjerde Sætren and into the roof of the net.

It took Norway just seven minutes to respond, as Hamburg winger Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit drove at the England defence, skipping past two defenders and ploughing past Tommy Setford at the near post.

Both teams created decent chances for the remainder of the first 45. Norway in particular were unlucky not to take the lead when Setford produced a smart save from point-blank range, and Sondre Granaas struck the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Granaas had his moment, on the strike of halftime, when he coolly volleyed home a perfectly-weighted ball from Røssing-Lelesiit.

The pace slowed in the second half, as Norway seemed more content to soak up England's pressure without pushing for a third. Snatched opportunities from Watson, and captain Moore did little to trouble Gjerde Sætren, and England failed to capitalise on a number of dead-ball opportunities.

Just as England looked to be running out of ideas, they received a lifeline. Norway failed to clear their lines, Shumaira Mhueka broke onto a loose ball on the box and was tripped by Mathias Øren. Moore blasted the spot kick home in the 79th minute.

Norway will rue a missed opportunity in the final knockings, as a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Caleb Khorpa denied Jesper Reitan-Sunde a tap-in in the 89th minute. Worringly, Moore appeared to take a heavy fall over his right ankle in the final minutes of added on time.

AdvertisementDID YOU KNOW?

The ease with which Norway broke on the England defence will be a cause for concern. The Three Lions did not concede a single goal during their six qualification games for the tournament.

THE MVP

Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit: Unfortunately, a knock picked up in the first half prematurely called time on the winger's day, as he was pulled off the pitch in the 55th minute. He was clearly disappointed, and who could blame him? The Hamburg prospect had the measure of the England defence, displaying the ability to go down the line and cut in from his position on the left flank. Took his goal, and set up the second brilliantly.

Mathias Øren: The Norwegian centre half had a solid day at the office until giving away the penalty. It appeared the youngster lost his head following the decision, receiving a booking for dissent and getting the hook shortly thereafter.

Celtic in good position to sign playmaker who'd "love" to play for Hoops

Celtic are in a strong position to sign a new playmaker who is keen to make the move to Parkhead, according to a new report.

Rodgers looking to bounce back from Rangers defeat

Celtic remain firmly in charge in the race for the Scottish Premiership title, though their final game before the international break ended in tears with a defeat to bitter rivals Rangers.

The Gers soared into a 2-0 lead before Brendan Rodgers’ side bounced back to level the scores in the second half through goals from Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.

Just when it looked like they were about to complete an astonishing turnaround, Rangers’ Hamza Igamane hit a stunning winner in the 88th minute, thrashing the ball into the top corner from just outside the Celtic area.

Speaking after the defeat, Rodgers urged his side to bounce back and apologised to the club’s fans.

“Firstly, the message to the supporters is, we apologise because we always want to win games here and against our big rivals, so, for them, it’s not a great feeling,” he said. “In every facet of the game, we have to be much better, and if you’re going to be a champion this year, you’ve got to go and show that you’re a champion and you’ve got to earn it.”

He added: “So there are eight games to go, with 13 points, but we’ve got a lot of big games to play.”

Celtic in race to sign O'Sullivan

Even though Celtic will likely end the season as Scottish champions, Rodgers is still keen to bolster his side in the summer’s transfer market – even if it only means being able to avoid another defeat to their rivals next term.

And according to The Athletic, as relayed by the Nottingham Post, the Hoops are firmly in the running to sign Irish teenager Cathal O’Sullivan, who is also attracting interest from Nottingham Forest.

Cork City’s O’Sullivan only turned 18 in early March, but already has a wealth of experience under his belt, having made 30 appearances for Cork at senior level, and is also a regular for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-19s.

While The Athletic reports that it is Forest who are first in line to land the teenage attacker, O’Sullivan himself has suggested he one day would love to play at Parkhead.

In a recent interview with the Irish Examiner, O’Sullivan said: “Yeah, it’s definitely an ambition because obviously the link with Ireland and Celtic. It’s a huge club, massive club so yeah, I would love to go over and play for a club like Celtic.

“I love watching their games and how impressive their Champions League run was this year, and my dad is the same,” he added. “My dad supports Celtic if they’re on the TV. There’s a connection between Ireland and Celtic or Cork and Celtic, there’s a huge amount of fans over here.”

Liverpool begin pre-summer talks for defender with £30m bid being prepared

Liverpool are believed to have entered talks over the signing of a “complete” Premier League player this summer, a new report has claimed.

Liverpool preparing for huge PSG clash

The Reds beat Southampton 3-1 in relatively unconvincing fashion on Saturday, which coupled with Arsenal’s 1-1 draw away to Manchester United further increased Arne Slot’s side’s stranglehold on the Premier League title.

Next up for Liverpool is their crucial Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, following last week’s smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at the Parc des Princes. Huge improvements will be needed by the Merseysiders, in terms of performance level, or their European dream could easily end.

Harvey Elliott celebrates for Liverpool

In terms of Reds-related transfer news, Marcus Thuram has been mentioned as a target for the summer, with the Inter Milan striker reportedly watched by Liverpool scouts during his side’s Champions League clash with Feyenoord last week, in which he opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory in the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman has also been linked with a move to Anfield at the end of the season, being seen as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz, should the Colombian leave. The 28-year-old has registered four goals and assists apiece in the Bundesliga in 2024/25 to date, but has been limited to just 11 starts in the competition.

Liverpool in talks to sign "complete" Bournemouth star Huijsen

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool have “initiated talks” to sign Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen in the summer transfer window and are one of several teams preparing a bid worth up to £30m.

The 19-year-old is a wanted man, following an outstanding season at the heart of the Cherries’ defence, with Arsenal and Tottenham also in the race, though they may all have to up their offers given he has a £55m release clause.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' Jean-Ricner Bellegarde in action with AFC Bournemouth's DeanHuijsen

Huijsen looks like a wonderful prospect, taking to the Premier League like a duck to water following his permanent move to Bournemouth from Juventus last summer.

The Spain Under-21 international has played a big role in the Cherries’ success throughout the campaign, averaging 5.3 clearances and 2.1 aerial duel wins per game in the league, and football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him both “complete” and “one of the most talented” teenage centre-backs in Europe currently.

A new central defender is needed at Liverpool this summer, in order to give Slot more options at the back, and bringing in a player with the long-term potential of Huijsen is a no-brainer.
