O’Neil must unleash "aggressive" Wolves gem who’d make Cunha better

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil is a man under pressure. The 2-2 draw against Brighton last week proved that the Old Gold have the fight in them to finally secure a Premier League win.

A clash against Crystal Palace awaits them this weekend. Oliver Glasner’s men aren’t exactly enjoying the best of seasons either, but they did beat Tottenham Hotspur last week to move up to 17th place in the top flight.

O’Neil will have to unleash his strongest team on Saturday evening at Molineux, with Matheus Cunha being the key figure in the side.

Matheus Cunha’s season in numbers

The Brazilian was arguably O’Neil’s most consistent performer last term, top-scoring with 14 goals across all competitions.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Despite Wolves’ poor start to 2024/25, Cunha appears to be carrying the form he demonstrated last term into the current campaign, already notching four league goals.

Not content with scoring goals, the former Atlético Madrid star has also created five big chances in the Premier League, averaging 1.7 key passes per game and 1.7 successful dribbles per match.

If he maintains this form, Cunha could score more than 14 goals this season. Giving him that freedom in an attacking midfield slot will be crucial over the next few weeks as the club looks to move away from the relegation places.

Could this see O’Neil make a few tweaks to his system? Perhaps bringing in someone who could dominate the midfield and offer plenty of defensive support?

If so, bringing Andre into the starting XI for the clash against the Eagles, after he was a substitute against Brighton last time out, could work wonders for both Cunha and Wolves.

Andre must be unleashed for Wolves

The summer signing arrived to much hype and fanfare, having made nearly 200 appearances for Fluminense, winning the Copa Libertadores during his time with the Brazilian side.

The midfielder may have only started five Premier League games for Wolves, but during his appearances, the 23-year-old has averaged a pass success rate of 95% along with recovering 3.6 balls, making 1.4 tackles, and winning three total duels per game – a success rate of 66% – for the Old Gold.

These statistics demonstrate that the youngster can circulate the ball well while being able to contribute effectively from a defensive point of view.

Having a player like Andre playing behind him, moving the ball around the pitch, and stopping any potential attacks could give Cunha more freedom to push forward whenever possible.

Analyst Ben Mattinson hailed Andre in 2023, saying: “We can’t talk about André without talking about his physicality. At 5’9” you’d think he’s not the most physically imposing but that’s far from the truth. André is a typical South American midfield dog. He loves to get stuck in and is very strong & aggressive in duels.”

If he can bring this sort of tenacity to the table against Palace, then Wolves may just win the midfield battle. This will give Cunha more opportunities to create chances and score a goal or two.

West Brom’s "special" loan star has seen his value soar 2316% since leaving

The international break could well have come at the perfect time for Carlos Corberan’s West Bromwich Albion, who had been stuttering as of late in the Championship.

Before the break got underway, however, the Baggies did just about get the better of Hull City on their travels, as both Josh Maja and Karlan Grant delivered the goods in a slender 2-1 away win, but that was West Brom’s first victory in nine games.

There was a lot of worry in the air that the wheels had already come off their campaign, therefore, but Corberan is a safe pair of hands and he should be able to get his team out of this sticky patch.

West Brom didn’t really utilise the loan market this summer to improve their squad, away from adding in the likes of Lewis Dobbin who have barely featured, with the West Midlands side striking gold in the past when adding in some top-quality loanees.

Memorable West Brom loanees

The first player that will immediately pop into a West Brom fan’s head is Romelu Lukaku, as the potent Belgian striker called the Hawthorns home for one season right at the start of his fledging playing days.

The well-travelled centre-forward would bag a mightily impressive 17 goals from 38 clashes for the Baggies during the 2012/13 campaign, going down as a fantastic loan purchase for the then Premier League outfit subsequently.

Lukaku isn’t the only household name that can thank West Brom for gifting them a platform to shine so early on into their career, with Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher also on the books of the Baggies once upon a time, alongside the likes of defensive rock Tosin Adarabioyo before he signed for Chelsea.

But, there is another loan star who has come on significant leaps and bounds this season for his Premier League side, who had also established himself as a firm fan’s favourite during a short but sweet spell in the West Midlands.

Harvey Barnes' career since leaving West Brom

Harvey Barnes, before going on to become an important part of the jigsaw under Eddie Howe at Newcastle United, was transported out on loan to West Brom, away from his parent employers Leicester City.

Already fresh off a formative loan stint at Barnsley in the EFL, the “special” winger – as he was once labelled by analyst Statman Dave – took the Championship by storm donning his new Baggies kit, with nine goals and eight assists coming his way from 28 outings.

As a result of firing home sublime strikes like this one during his stint at the Hawthorns, Barnes would eventually go on to make a name for himself back at the Foxes, with 77 goal contributions tallied up from 187 total games before Newcastle swooped in to land him last year.

The Magpies must feel quite smug with themselves that they decided to pick up Barnes now, capitalising on Leicester’s relegation down to the Championship in the process, when you consider his sparkling output so far this season.

Looking at the table above, Barnes has been an effective weapon for Howe and Co to rely on, with the ex-Leicester man firing home four goals and picking up one assist from 11 league games, despite only averaging 46 minutes per clash.

Howe even described his qualities as “unbounded” after an audacious strike versus Wolverhampton Wanderers in September, with Barnes’ transfer value now all the way up at £29m – according to Transfermarkt – when his price tag only stood at a low £1.2m during his loan stint, representing a rise of 2316%.

West Brom fans will hope their team can take on Barnes’ side next season, but only if their promotion dreams finally become a reality, with their team’s wobbly form having to be corrected.

Man Utd considering £63m Bundesliga star as possible Gyokeres alternative

Manchester United have an interest in Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, according to a recent report, but there is another rising talent on their list of attacking targets. Ruben Amorim was named the new United boss last week, and since that news the Premier League side have been linked with plenty of new additions, several of which come from his current club.

Amorim now backs Man Utd's pursuit of £84m gem who could replace Rashford

Amorim has his eye on a possible replacement for Rashford.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 5, 2024 Man Utd may have advantage in Gyokeres race

Gyokeres has been a standout performer since moving to Portugal, netting 66 goals in 67 games in all competitions for Sporting. That form has earned him links to the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, but it was reported last week that United may have an advantage.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed that United appointing Amorim may give them an edge in the race to sign Gyokeres. The Swedish international moved to Lisbon in 2023, and it is expected that he will be on the move once more at the end of this season. The forward has a £83 million release clause, but it has been claimed that he could be allowed to leave for around £50 million in the summer.

Gyokeres bagged yet another hat-trick on Tuesday night, as Sporting eased by City 4-1 in the Champions League, and after the game, Amorin was asked about taking Gyokeres to Old Trafford with him: “I respect Sporting. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season… and then maybe go somewhere else. I won’t make any joke about it; I respect this club, and this is my city.”

Gyokeres may be on Amorim’s radar, but he is not the only striker the Red Devils are looking at, as they also have their eye on another European sensation.

Man Utd eyeing Benjamin Sesko as possible Gyokeres alternative

According to Christian Falk, Manchester United are interested in signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. The Slovenia international joined the Bundesliga side in the 2023 summer transfer window, and he had a memorable first campaign at the club, as he scored 18 goals in all competitions.

The 21-year-old was linked with a move away during the summer transfer window but instead remained at Leipzig and signed a new contract. It has been reported that the new deal now includes a £63 million release clause, so a transfer away from the German side is still very much a possibility.

Falk states that Bayern Munich are interested in signing Sesko, but they face competition from United, who he confirms are also interested in Gyokeres. Sesko, who has been described as “fantastic” by Football Talent scout Jacek Kulig, was linked with a move to United during the summer, and it appears as though he has remained on their transfer radar.

Sesko is under contract at Leipzig until 2029, but his release clause makes him an affordable option for a team like United. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils are genuinely interested, but he could be another option should a deal for Gyokeres not work out.

Ipswich let a "great" player leave for £0, now he’s outscoring Szmodics

Ipswich Town will know that their chances of staying up in the Premier League this campaign are somewhat slim, but Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys have always thrived when being an underdog under the manager’s stellar tenure to date.

Ipswich managed to achieve back-to-back promotions to the top-flight against heavy odds, and minus their humbling 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out on the road haven’t looked completely out of their depth dining at the elite table.

It will be a long and gruelling campaign ahead though that will test his side’s resolve, which will be made even harder if McKenna can’t manage to get a tune out of more of his attackers, away from Liam Delap’s heroics up top.

Szmodics and Chaplin's form this season

Whilst Delap has been an instant rip-roaring success in Suffolk, with the £20m summer recruit hammering home an impressive four strikes from seven games for his new relegation-threatened outfit, Sammie Szmodics has struggled to nail down a starting spot since his major move from Blackburn Rovers.

The current Championship golden boot holder has averaged only 44 minutes of action per game in the Premier League, with his showing against Southampton last month a real concern, as the Republic of Ireland international only managed to make a dire seven accurate passes alongside only being able to register one shot on target at Aaron Ramsdale’s shaky goal.

Of course, the ex-Peterborough United star did manage to score away at Manchester City to send the Tractor Boys away faithful into raptures back in August, but it’s been extremely stop-start since with no more goals coming his way.

It’s a similar story for Conor Chaplin too in McKenna’s current ranks, who has only managed to make the first-team from the get-go once this season in the top-flight, despite being crucial to Ipswich’s automatic promotion heroics last campaign.

The ex-Barnsley man does have one goal next to his name like Szmodics, but that was on a far less glamorous stage than his counterpart, with Chaplin firing home a strike in an EFL Cup tie versus League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon.

Registering 13 goals and eight assists in second-tier action throughout 2023/24, the 27-year-old will just pray his campaign this time around is a slow burner and he can eventually acclimatise to the pressures of the Premier League.

McKenna will hope these two can come good over time, with one ex-Tractor Boys player currently outperforming the out-of-sorts duo away from Suffolk.

How Dobra is performing after leaving Ipswich

The player in question is Chesterfield star Armando Dobra, who is a firm fan favourite to those with associations with the Spireites.

Funnily enough, the tricky Albania U21 international has come into his own at Chesterfield under the guidance of ex-Ipswich manager Paul Cook, with Dobra now a top performer for his team all the way down in League Two.

Only managing to make 30 forgettable first-team appearances at Portman Road before exiting in 2022 on a free transfer, there must be some anguish now that Ipswich didn’t persist more with the 23-year-old, who constantly gets fans out of their seats at Chesterfield with entertaining displays.

Last campaign, Dobra amassed a stunning 20 goal contributions as his team finally returned to the EFL, with Spireites coach Danny Webb labelling the explosive number 17 as a “great” talent right after he penned a new deal to stay put with this side on the rise until 2026.

He has taken to being back in the EFL well too, with three strikes managed in all competitions from 12 games this campaign so far, surpassing both Szmodics and Chaplin’s goal tallies in the process.

Of course, the gulf in quality is huge between League Two and the very pinnacle of the English game, but there will still be some regrets at the end of the Tractor Boys all the same about potentially ditching Dobra too prematurely.

McKenna and Co won’t actively lose too much sleep over this situation, however, as Dobra continues to shine in the fourth tier, whilst Ipswich aim to stay put in the top flight.

Alex Carey praised for his calmness but T20 captaincy remains up for grabs

Matthew Wade could stand in for the injured Aaron Finch during the series in Bangladesh

Andrew McGlashan28-Jul-2021Alex Carey’s calm leadership was lauded by Australia coach Justin Langer after the 2-1 ODI series win over West Indies but he appears unlikely to retain the captaincy for the T20I series against Bangladesh.Australia need to decide on a stand-in for the injured Aaron Finch who missed the ODIs in the Caribbean and was then ruled out of the Bangladesh leg due to a knee problem that is likely to require surgery.Carey is much less secure of his place in the T20I set-up – he made 22 runs in three innings against West Indies after being recalled to the middle order – and it could be that Matthew Wade takes the captaincy against Bangladesh having previously stepped in for Finch against India last year.Australia fly to Dhaka on a charter flight on Wednesday and a final decision will be taken over the next few days by Langer in consultation with selectors Trevor Hohns and George Bailey.Related

“We’ll work through that,” Langer said. “We want to be consistent with those decisions, hopefully we’ve shown over a period now that we’re very consistent with how we’re selecting teams and selecting leaders, and no doubt that, that’ll be shown again when we get to the T20s in Bangladesh.”However, Carey’s first stint in the role – having lost his position as shared vice-captaincy last year – will have done his credentials no harm when future captains are being assessed. Finch has previously said he would like to continue through to the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.”I thought Alex’s captaincy was outstanding,” Langer said. “He’s so calm and you can see it in his face when he bats. We’ve seen it through his career, but we saw it in that hundred he scored with Glenn Maxwell in England last year, to win when we were really under pressure, and even the way that he batted last night he just seemed so calm under pressure.”As we know he’s the ultimate professional, so therefore he’s easy to work with as a captain because you know that he will tick every box. He’ll make sure that all his due diligence is done on the opposition and he’ll know how our players are travelling. So he was great to work with, I loved his calmness, loved his composure, I love what he brings on and off the field so he did a really really good job. He’s very impressive in that role.”Alex Carey played key hands with the bat•AFPCarey could get another chance in the T20I middle order against Bangladesh with Australia’s batting resources stretched due to Finch’s absence and doubts over Ben McDermott after he injured his ankle diving into a boundary board in the second ODI. Due to travel difficulties and biosecure arrangements, replacements can’t be called up.Moises Henriques had a tough time with the bat in the West Indies but there is limited room for manoeuvre given both the travelling replacements, the uncapped Nathan Ellis and Tanveer Sangha, only provide bowling cover. Dan Christian and Ashton Turner did not feature in the last T20I against West Indies and will come back into the frame. With five matches in the space of seven days it is likely the fast bowlers will be rotated.Australia will be looking to improve on their 4-1 loss against West Indies which included throwing away a winning position in the opening game and then they could not get on the board until the series was gone.Mitchell Marsh was the biggest success in that series with 219 runs and eight wickets to push himself firmly into contention for the T20 World Cup even when the absent players are available again.”Certainly Mitch Marsh has put his hand up. That No. 3 position is really interesting depending on how Steve Smith comes up with his elbow injury,” Langer said. “That adds real depth to our play. I also thought the way Ashton Agar batted yesterday, [he] is certainly up there as a spin bowler and he’s like a leopard in the field. I also liked the fact that he, Matthew Wade, and Alex Carey, the left handers in the middle…we thought moving into the World Cup we might be a bit short on left-hand batsman. But the way those guys have stood up is a huge bonus for us moving forward.”

Dermot Gallagher changes his tune about Declan Rice’s red card for Arsenal

Arsenal fans may well have been proved right about their feeling that Declan Rice was hard done by to receive a red card in their Premier League draw against Brighton, according to Sky Sports' Ref Watch.

Gunners denied vital points against Brighton

Arsenal seemed on course for maximum points heading into the international break as Mikel Arteta's side took a 1-0 lead into half-time against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium.

They’re looking to make “significant” progress on this during the international break.

But just five minutes into the second half, the Gunners were controversially reduced to ten men when Chris Kavanagh sent off Declan Rice for a second bookable offence, tapping the ball away before being cleaned out by Joel Veltman, which the referee deemed to be delaying the restart.

Brighton scored minutes later, and the game finished 1-1 with Arsenal holding onto a point rather than the three that they had initially set out for.

After the game, both Mikel Arteta and Bukayo Saka bemoaned the lack of consistency in the decision to send Rice off, with Joao Pedro having escaped a yellow for kicking the ball away in the first half, while Gunners fans all over social media fumed at how rarely such offences are actually punished.

Sky Sports' ref watch proves Arsenal's point

Speaking in the wake of the game, Sky Sport's in-studio referee Dermot Gallagher backed up the decision made by the referee.

"The players were told at the start of the season that if you delay the restart, you run the risk [of a booking], it was quite clear", the former Premier League official explained. "You think someone else should've got a yellow card, but that doesn't exonerate what he did.

"Two things don't help him. He knows what he's doing, and secondly the touchline – people say he didn't knock it very far, but he knocks it off the field and so they definitely can't restart play. Chris Kavanagh has got nowhere to go. The second yellow is mandatory."

But Arsenal fans have a reputation for being detectives on social media, and have switched their focus from tracking transfer targets' planes to finding precedent for Rice's red card. Now, they have found just that.

Looking at an eerily similar incident from 2021 involving former Arsenal academy man Henri Lansbury, a previous episode of Sky's ref watch saw the entire studio – Gallagher included – fail to even mention whether the man kicked should be booked, but rather discuss why a red card was not brandished for the offender (Veltman in Saturday's case), with Gallagher himself admitting: "I just don't understand why it isn't a red card."

Maybe Arteta and Arsenal fans have a point about the lack of consistency after all…
