Havertz answer: Arsenal must rue losing "goal machine" who’s like Marmoush

This season has felt like a real slog for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side have had to deal with a drop in form, questionable officiating, and a mountain of injuries, which have eviscerated their frontline.

Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are all out injured, with the last two not set to return until next season, which makes the decision not to sign anyone last month look utterly absurd.

Following the loss of Havertz earlier this month, we reckon the manager would love to have one of his former forward options back in the squad, especially as he’s won comparisons to Manchester City’s new addition, Omar Marmoush.

Havertz's pre-injury form

It would be fair to say that Havertz is a centre-forward who divides opinion.

After all, the former Chelsea ace was initially signed as a midfielder to replace Granit Xhaka in the summer of 2023.

However, while the criticisms of his finishing ability certainly hold true, as evidenced by Understat revealing he’s underperformed his expected goals by 2.76 this season, he’s been more effective than people have perhaps given him credit for this year.

For example, in 34 appearances before his injury, totalling 2776 minutes, the 25-year-old “monster,” as dubbed by writer Jake Entwistle, managed to rack up a pretty decent haul of 15 goals and five assists.

That means the Aachen-born forward was averaging a goal involvement every 1.7 games, or every 138.8 minutes, which not only makes him the Gunners’ top scorer this year but also demonstrates why his absence from the starting lineup for the rest of the campaign is such a significant concern.

It’s a problem that Arteta will have to find a solution for as soon as possible, and while he likely will, we can’t help thinking about how useful it’d be to have one of his former stars back in the team, especially as they’ve won comparisons to Marmoush of all people this year.

The former Arsenal star compared to Marmoush

Arsenal have had some brilliant strikers play for them in recent history, such as Olivier Giroud and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but perhaps one of their most underrated number nines in the modern era was Alexandre Lacazette.

The French poacher joined the Gunners in the window before Aubameyang arrived, so his efforts in attack were often, understandably, underappreciated, as while he could be profligate and even sluggish at times, the Lyon-born star had a pretty decent record.

When he left the Emirates for free in the summer of 2023, the 33-year-old did so with 71 goals and 32 assists to his name in 206 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every other game, and considering he’s since racked up a haul of 63 goals and 12 assists in 103 appearances for Lyon, it would be fair to say he would’ve been the ideal solution to Havertz’s recent injury.

On top of his raw output, the French “goal machine,” as former teammate Sokratis described him, has been likened to one of the most exciting players in Europe this season: Marmoush.

The comparison stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and in this instance, has concluded that the Egyptian is the second most similar forward to the Lyon star.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, progressive passes received, penalty kicks, goals per shot, expected assists, passing accuracy, passes into the final third and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, there can be no doubt over the fact that following Havertz’s injury, Arsenal are in the midst of a crisis in attack, and while moving Lacazette on over two years ago was probably the right move, we can’t help but imagine Arteta would be feeling much better about the situation with him in his squad.

"World-class" Arsenal player in pre-summer talks to leave with deal close

The transfer window has concluded in disappointing fashion for Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta, who did not get a single outfield signing through the door and failed in their pursuit of a much-needed striker.

The Spaniard, despite links to an array of high-profile centre-forwards, couldn’t get a new frontman to ease the pressure on Kai Havertz. Arsenal made a late bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, and were tipped to target the likes of Juventus star Dušan Vlahović, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, Tottenham loanee Mathys Tel, Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres and Wolves’ Matheus Cunha throughout the winter window.

Arteta says Arsenal are disappointed to not have got a single squad upgrade through the door before Monday’s deadline, but also says that they were disciplined enough not to panic buy either.

“We had a clear intention, which is always there is a window open to explore opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s January window.

“We haven’t achieved it so we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring in certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that as well, and I think that we were.”

It was also an uneventful window in terms of exits, despite a few squad members attracting interest. Left-back Kieran Tierney was attracting serious interest from Celtic, but he’ll have to wait until summer to park his move back to Parkhead.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jorginho has also been subject to serious interest from Brazilian sides, with his contract expiring at the end of this season.

Jorginho in pre-summer talks to join Flamengo from Arsenal with deal close

Flamengo appear to be leading the pack to sign him on a pre-contract, and are in negotiations to do so right now.

That is according to GOAL Brasil, who state that an authorised intermediary of Jorginho is in talks with Flamengo on the player’s behalf. The outlet reports that Flamengo want to seal a pre-contract agreement with Jorginho “in the coming days”, and they’re convinced that they’re close to an agreement with the Italy international.

The Brazilian transfer window is actually still open, and will be until February 28th, but Flamengo concede that a deal for Jorginho is unlikely to happen until the summer.

The 33-year-old has been a useful utility player for Arteta this season, so Arsenal’s manager won’t be keen on losing him midway through the campaign.

“I know him a lot, so for me it is nice to play with him he knows me well,” said Kai Havertz last season. “It makes life easy for me, he is a world-class player.”

'He was with the team in an official capacity' – SLC to bear Gunathilaka's legal fees

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) says it is paying for Danushka Gunathilaka’s legal defence in Australia because the charges of sexual intercourse without consent were laid on him while he was on national duty at the T20 World Cup.Related

  • Danushka Gunathilaka granted bail in case of alleged sexual assault

  • Police facts sheet: Gunathilaka's alleged victim was 'choked repeatedly without consent'

  • Gunathilaka charged for alleged sexual assault, arrested in Sydney

  • Danushka Gunathilaka denied bail, suspended by SLC from 'all forms of cricket'

It is also not yet clear whether Gunathilaka breached SLC’s own protocol by going on a date during an active tour, something the board CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo was prohibited. Six days after the alleged incident, SLC says it is yet to figure out whether Gunathilaka broke curfew on Wednesday, November 2, the night to which the charges relate.SLC has no contractual obligation to assist Gunathilaka’s defence, and is doing so voluntarily. De Silva insists, however, that it will recover the legal costs eventually, either by asking Gunathilaka to pay the board back, or by docking payments the board owes him.”This wasn’t a private visit,” de Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “He was with the team in an official capacity, so we felt we should pay the legal fees, on the condition that we can recover them from him later, whatever the results of the case.”His parents probably aren’t able to do that [cover the legal costs],” De Silva said further. Gunathilaka has been a regular part of Sri Lanka’s limited-overs teams since mid 2017, playing 47 ODIs and 46 T20Is, in addition to eight Tests. He has appeared in at least three franchise T20 tournaments and also has local sponsorship deals.De Silva equated SLC’s backing of Kusal Perera in the first six months of 2016, to their support of Gunathilaka now. “Just like we recovered the cost of that case, after Kusal Perera was cleared, we will do so here as well.”Perera’s case, however, was not criminal in nature and there is no previous instance of SLC providing official support to a player facing criminal charges.Gunathilaka had been ruled out of the T20 World Cup on October 19 with a hamstring injury but had remained with the squad in Australia as “a stand-by player” when the alleged incident occurred.Asked whether SLC’s own reputation is tarnished by its support of a player facing such serious charges, de Silva said the board should offer its support “to someone who has fallen into such a situation”.Whether Gunathilaka breached the team’s own touring codes – something that would normally warrant internal censure – de Silva was not sure yet. SLC has appointed a three-member probe to make an “independent inquiry”, and de Silva said the team manager is in touch with the ICC’s security personnel to ascertain whether Gunathilaka breached curfew that evening.SLC also denied an allegation from a senior journalist that politicians had instructed the board to bear Gunathilaka’s legal costs. The board did this via a statement issued on Tuesday, which said that “Sri Lanka Cricket has in no way been influenced by a ‘third party’ in carrying out the obligatory actions required to be taken to allow Mr. Danushka Gunathilaka to pursue any legal rights available to him”.Later in the same release, SLC said it had been “in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the consular officials” in taking steps to pursue Gunathilaka’s legal rights.Gunathilaka was arrested on the morning of November by Sydney police, and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent, and was later denied bail. According to de Silva, apart from a five-minute period around the arrest during which Gunathilaka spoke to the team manager, SLC staff has not been in direct contact with the player.

Brendon McCullum told you there'd be days like these

Big Picture

Has England’s B… B… bubble burst? At this point, and despite recent evidence, it’s safe to say, no. And Brendon McCullum will no doubt be saying, “I told you so.”McCullum, England’s head coach, did warn that his side’s new risk-versus-reward Test style would bring ups and downs. In facing a quality South Africa side – leading the World Test Championship table and boasting a fierce pace attack featuring Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, who did the most damage during the visitors’ innings victory at Lord’s – the hosts were down after some pretty heady highs earlier in the summer. So it’s also safe to say they won’t be changing their ways vastly.Nor will South Africa, who hit on a winning formula with Rabada and Nortje sharing 13 wickets for the match, well backed up by Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi and spinner Keshav Maharaj. While only Sarel Erwee reached a half-century for them, eight other batters made it into double-figures, with Jansen and Maharaj sharing a crucial 72-run stand for the seventh wicket. With the prospect of chasing taken away at the toss, England were forced to find another way and failed, which will not have escaped the attention of South Africa captain, Dean Elgar. That said, the England squad arrived in Manchester on Tuesday, having attended the premier of the moving documentary the previous evening, determined to rally round their talismanic captain, who delved deeper into the personal and mental health issues he has faced. That, combined with coming off such a heavy defeat, could further galvanise the home side. For South Africa’s part, however, they’ll know they have the chance to take an unassailable lead in the series, albeit at a ground where they have struggled to beat England, and confidence will be high. So there you have it, we’ve made it this far with a few “B” words but not “Bazball” – oops!

In the spotlight

Fourteen innings without passing fifty – amongst all that, seven single-figure scores and two ducks – leave Zak Crawley facing yet more questions over his spot at the top of the order. His century against West Indies in Antigua in March and half-century during the Sydney Ashes Test went some way to answering similar queries. But, even taking the arrival of England’s new coaching and captaincy regime as a starting point, two knocks in the 40s haven’t had the same effect and nor has a Test average of 20.06 – make that 16.40 this summer. McCullum’s assertion that Crawley’s “skill set is not to be a consistent cricketer”, like it’s a good thing, raised eyebrows. The best thing Crawley can do is to raise eyebrows himself by either laying a solid foundation or producing the match-winning knock McCullum says he wants him for.It emerged after the first Test that Kyle Verreynne had batted in the most difficult circumstances, coming in at No. 7 after his grandfather became seriously ill in the stands at Lord’s. He managed 11 during a 31-minute stay in the middle after Jansen was sent in ahead of him and made an impressive 48. Having gone five innings since his unbeaten century against New Zealand in Christchurch and not passed 40 since, he will be seeking runs. Verreynne took three crucial catches in England’s second innings to remove opener Alex Lees, the dangerous Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes for a duck as the home side crumbled inside 38 overs and, after an excellent performance behind the stumps at Lord’s, he was practising his glovework with a vengence at Old Trafford on Wednesday.Kyle Verreynne walks back to the pavilion after losing his wicket on day two of the first Test at Lord’s•AFP via Getty Images

Team news

England have made one change to their XI, bringing in Ollie Robinson for Matthew Potts, who took 2 for 79 in the first Test. It will be Robinson’s first match for England in more than seven months, since England’s fifth-Test defeat at the hands of Australia in Hobart, where back spasms limited his involvement, leading to bowling coach Jon Lewis calling on him to work harder. More back issues, dental problems and a bout of Covid severely curtailed Robinson’s English summer, although his five wickets for the match as England Lions romped to victory in the warm-up for this series signalled his readiness to return.England: 1 Alex Lees, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James AndersonDespite Ryan Rickelton spending a lengthy time batting in the nets on Tuesday, South Africa have stuck with the same squad for the second Test, leaving them with a choice between four seamers and two spinners. If they go spin-heavy, it could come down to a choice between Ngidi and Simon Harmer, who was 12th man at Lord’s.South Africa (possible): 1 Dean Elgar (capt), 2 Sarel Erwee, 3 Keegan Petersen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 Kyle Verreynne (wk), 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Lungi Ngidi/Simon Harmer

Pitch and conditions

A covering of green grass two days out appeared to be diminishing 24 hours before play. After rain during the week and with more forecast through the night on match eve, finer conditions are expected along with temperatures in the low 20s Celsius for the duration of the match.

Stats and trivia

  • England have a good record against South Africa in Manchester. Of the nine times they have played, England have won four, drawn four and lost just once, in 1955.
  • Elgar and Erwee have five fifty-plus stands in just nine innings and average 53.55 for their opening partnership.
  • Of Joe Root’s 10 Test innings against South Africa in England, his first score of 190 at Lord’s in 2017 is by far the highest. His next best is 78, scored in the following match.
  • Elgar needs 89 runs to reach the 5,000 milestone in Tests.

Quotes

“What we’ve learned from ourselves is that you can’t always go out there and perform how you want to perform. But it’s not something that we’re going to take backward steps from. South Africa were better than us in that Test match and that’s fine. Sport’s set up for someone to be a winner and someone to be a loser and we’re going to be focusing on this game.”
“What happened in the first Test was something amazing. We played really solid, sound cricket. Our hunger was up there. And our hunger is still here. We want to play a brand of cricket that everyone loves back home. We know it’s going to be a lot tougher. England were hurt and I know they are coming back. I hope we can play another solid game of cricket. We know we have to start again.”

'Have enough to get over the line' – ESPN FC host Kay Murray on Harry Kane and Bayern Munich's Bundesliga ambitions, 'undeniable talent' of Gio Reyna, and Ballon d'Or race without 'a standout contender'

Mic'd Up: The ESPN FC host hails Bayern Munich's improvement, takes stock of Gio Reyna's struggles, and makes Ballon d'Or prediction

Kay Murray is as knowledgeable as anyone when it comes to European football. The English broadcaster and studio host has covered a bit of everything in her time as an on-air and sideline talent. These days, she's in the studio for ESPN FC, covering the madness of soccer on the continent, but focusing on the Bundesliga. It's an interesting year for her, with Bayern Munich returning to the top of the league.

"I find Bayern very interesting, and I feel that there's a lot more calm around them this season," she tells GOAL.

Part of the appeal, Murray says, has been the influence of Vincent Kompany. The manager wasn't among the favorites to take the job last summer, but has got the Bavarians back to winning ways in no time.

"It's crazy that this is somebody who wasn't even on the top five of the wish list to come in as Bayern coach," she says. "But I don't feel like we're really talking about that anymore, and I think that's a testament and credit to him. It kept getting mentioned in the beginning, but everything he's done to essentially steady the ship – because there's been a bit of chaos around Bayern – has put them in that light."

His credentials will be tested this weekend, though, when Bayern take on Borussia Dortmund in the latest iteration of Der Klassiker, with Bayern's Harry Kane continuing his quest for silverware. The match begins at 12:25 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN+, Disney+ and ESPN Deportes.

Dortmund are struggling this season, and will hope to rebound after a comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. They may be playing for pride, but there is no way they will roll over for their biggest rivals.

"I wouldn't say for sure that Bayern will win this one. But then there's part of it that thinks if they do win it, it will be a blowout. That's the thing. It goes back to that Dortmund thing, but I think there might be a little bit of life in the old dog yet with Borussia Dortmund," she says.

Either way, it will make for a fascinating watch. Murray talked German football, Gio Reyna, Ballon d'Or and more in Mic'd Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspective of broadcasters, analysts, and other pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and abroad.

Getty ImagesON BAYERN MUNICH

GOAL: What do you make of Bayern Munich this season?

MURRAY: I find Bayern very interesting, and I feel that there's a lot more calm around them this season, and that has to be because of Vincent Kompany coming in. It's crazy that this is somebody who wasn't even on the top five of the wish list to come in as Bayern coach. But I don't feel like we're really talking about that anymore, and I think that's a testament and credit to him. It kept getting mentioned in the beginning, but everything he's done to essentially steady the ship – because there's been a bit of chaos around Bayern – has put them in that light.

It's a weird thing with Bayern at the moment where you want to give them credit. They've got a six-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga, but there are still some times this season where you feel as though they've got away with a few things. And there's been some questions and some concerns. I remember the first time they had a big test this season. There was like a run of games where they were going to play Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Barcelona. It wasn't always convincing in those games, but they still seemed to come through, and they've kept that unity, and you can tell that something's much tighter there than it had been. So it's going to be interesting to see the tests that they've got ahead.

GOAL: Will they get over the line in the Bundesliga?

MURRAY: Without a doubt. I feel that strongly about it. I can still make a case on air if I need to about where it could go wrong, but it would have to go wrong. No team has ever thrown away this big of an advantage in the Bundesliga at this stage of a season. So why would Bayern do it now when they have been steadier and a lot more convincing than Leverkusen behind them? And so I think, if I'm honest, it's pretty much already dead. However, there are some tests still ahead that could derail things a little bit, so we'll see what happens in the Champions League. It's obviously not great all the injuries they've got at the moment, but I do feel, to your point, that they'll have enough to get over the line.

AdvertisementAFPON HARRY KANE

GOAL: It looks like Harry Kane is finally going to break his career long trophy drought. What does that mean for him, do you think?

MURRAY: Everybody loves that narrative. It is interesting with the situations he's been in, but I really hope it happens for him. And this is not a bias of him being an England striker. I think it's hard not to like Harry Kane. He's such a top professional. He's a world-class striker. He does everything that's asked of him as a professional. Last season, it wasn't Bayern's season, and he's still getting the numbers and the individual accolades that would be expected of somebody of his caliber. I think it's hard not to be happy for him, and he's played a huge part in that trophy coming their way, if and when it does.

GOAL: He may as well just win something at this point. It seems it's like one of those cool things.

MURRAY: That first season, he comes and Bayer Leverkusen, against all the odds, win the title that year, and you're thinking, "Oh my goodness, is it going to happen for him?" But I think that if you looked at it and you looked at it properly, you'd think, "Well, if he's in the right place now for it to happen." So, OK, it didn't happen in the first season, but it is going to happen for him now.

GettyON GIO REYNA

GOAL: The American consciousness is fascinated by Gio Reyna. What does Gio need to do? Does he need to go? Is it time? So many managers, injuries. What's your what's your opinion?

MURRAY: It's really hard to know what to say with Gio Reyna, because he's still so young as well that he feels like he's been around forever. The injuries haven't helped him either. And then he went through this period of I remember coming on and making a difference, and then those moments go I just feel like he just needs something to go his way, somewhere, with a manager to really bank on him, and him to bank on himself. The talent is undeniable.

By extension there's this fascination with him and Borussia Dortmund. My co-host Ale Moreno gets so annoyed all the time by Dortmund because he just can't trust them, but there's this fascination around them all the time. It won't go away, because just when you think they're down and out, they'll do something that you think, "Oh, my goodness. How have they done that? Why aren't they showing that all the time?"

We had a bit of back and forth on air about it, because they've got this massive week coming up where they've got Bayern away from home. I can't say for sure that they won't take something away, against Bayern. That's the fascination around Dortmund, we never know what we're going to get from them. That's why you can't trust them. I agree with Ale Marino on that, you can't trust them – but you also can't count them out, because time and time again, they've proved that they'll do something that you're not expecting.

Getty ImagesON DER KLASSIKER

GOAL: You mentioned you wouldn't be surprised if Dortmund win, but do you have a prediction? Is this the day that Bayern put the nail in the coffin and win the title?

MURRAY: It could be, but I think there might be a little twist, because they held them in the reverse fixture. And granted, Harry Kane goes out injured in that fixture. But Jamal Musiala was the one who salvaged the point in the reverse fixture, and now they don't have him. We're really gonna need to see Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller, which is so interesting – he's going at the end of the season, and now they might just be heavily relying on him for the last phase. Leroy Sane is really going to have to step up, not just in this game, but in the games that follow without Musiala.

And then they have defensive injuries. It is really not a good time for them. It's this time of the season when you see players dropping like flies, when they've had such a packed schedule. And I just don't know how that's going to factor in. I think they're going to have enough to go over the line, but I wouldn't say for sure that Bayern will win this one. But then there's part of it that thinks if they do win it, it will be a blowout. That's the thing. It goes back to that Dortmund thing, but I think there might be a little bit of life in the old dog yet with Borussia Dortmund this weekend against Bayern.

GOAL: The footballing world always seems drawn to, El Clasico, or in England, Liverpool-United, the Manchester Derby. How significant is Der Klassiker?

MURRAY: It's really significant. And regardless of what's going on, which is what we find ourselves in this season, Dortmund have just found their way back into the top half of the table. That's how bad it's been, and I think it was last season was the first time we saw a Klassiker without at least one of the teams being at the top of the table. So it's a strange time for it. But you just still see that intense rivalry that goes deep, that goes through history over all those years, with some massive name players that have been involved with it.

Regardless of what's going on and how bad or good those teams are doing, it doesn't seem to change how they feel, and it doesn't seem to change the appeal for this game overall. You could be looking at other teams that are in the top four at the moment, and they'll be facing either a Bayern or a Leverkusen. And because we're involved in the Bundesliga, we're like, "OK, this is great. This is going to be an amazing matchup this week, because these two teams are facing each other." But as a whole, if you were to put that out to a broader audience, they're much more interested in seeing a rivalry and a game between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

As his stock continues to rise with standout performances for Fulham, Antonee Robinson has become a player to watch across Europe. Known for his off-pitch talents – like playing the piano and rapidly solving a Rubik's Cube – the USMNT left-back recently revealed another surprising skill.

On Fulham’s official podcast , Robinson shared that he’s one of the top chess players in the squad – and he believes the game sharpens his football IQ.

“I’ve genuinely said this—I do think playing chess helps you play better football,” Robinson explained. “It’s not that quick and exact, but I see decision-making on the pitch kind of like chess. You’ve got so many options on the board, just like in a match, and you’re trying to pick the best move each time. It’s really the same thing, just faster.”

He elaborated further: “Say you’ve got three passes on – you're asking yourself which one’s best, which one’s safest. Passing to a guy who’s tightly marked usually leads nowhere. In chess, you don’t want to make a move that leads nowhere either. It’s the same concept.”

Robinson also discussed the evolution of the full-back role and made it clear he prefers a more traditional approach.

“Since I’ve been a professional, our system has suited me – very dynamic, lots of running, joining the attack,” he said. “But the role’s changing. There are more inverted left-backs now, kind of playing like second midfielders. I’ve only done that a few times – once recently for the U.S. against Jamaica – and it’s not really my game. I’m more vertical, more straight lines.”

  • WHAT ANTONEE ROBINSON SAID

The former Wigan Athletic full-back also revealed that he did have a conversation with AC Milan icon Paolo Maldini ahead of a failed move to during his time with and that the Italian legend believed in Robinson’s potential.

“He [Paolo Maldini] said 'Look, I see a lot of potential in you and I’m really looking forward to working with you and helping develop you as a player.' Which to hear that from him is an unreal feeling,” Robinson added. “Every now and then it re-affirms to me to just be confident in myself because if someone like that can see the potential in me then obviously something is there.”

Beyond that, Robinson also talked about his hopes for the 2026 World Cup and what the USMNT could potentially do at the tournament.

“Ideally we wanna go and win it. I think in general the World Cup is going to be probably the biggest sporting event potentially ever as an event. So, to be on that stage, representing our country and the team we have, you know it’s obviously next year but lads who are kind of going under the radar at the minute could fly unaware and surprise people, you never know and that goes for any country but that goes for us specifically.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 27-year-old full-back has been an integral part of Fulham this season, playing in every league game for as they attempt to challenge for a European place. They sit eighth on the league table with 48 points but are only four points behind sixth-place Manchester City and five points behind fifth-place Newcastle United with seven games left to go.

£15k-p/w Leeds ace Farke called "class" will leave Elland Road this month

One member of Daniel Farke’s Leeds United squad is set to depart Elland Road this January, it has emerged, as he seeks opportunities elsewhere.

Leeds slip up in Championship

Costly errors from goalkeeper Illan Meslier meant that Leeds were held to a 3-3 draw by Hull City in their most recent outing, allowing Burnley and Sheffield United to close the gap at the top of the Championship to just a single point.

Like last season, it is proving to be a tight affair at the top of England’s second tier, with at least one of the three mentioned sides certain to miss out on automatic promotion come the end of the campaign, a fate that Leeds suffered last season.

However, Farke’s side look better equipped for promotion this season despite their firesale over the summer, with the Whites boasting the third-best defence in the division as well as the best attack.

Despite this, Farke was adamant that his side could not just “cruise” through the Championship for the remainder of the campaign.

“Overall you have to say it’s a sign of what we are – we are not the finished product which cruises through this league. We are one of the youngest sides in the league and we don’t play without making mistakes.

“A more experienced side at 3-1 up would have kept the ball and maybe scored a fourth goal but we allowed ourselves to not be switched on.”

With the January transfer window now here, Farke and the 49ers can add new blood to their ranks if they see fit, but a departure seems the most likely deal to be completed first.

Forward to leave Leeds this January

That comes as journalist Darren Witcoop claimed that forward Joe Gelhardt will be leaving Leeds this month, at least temporarily. The 22-year-old has featured just twice in the Championship so far this campaign, with Joel Piroe, Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford all preferred to the youngster by Farke.

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

He has not even been a part of a matchday squad since October, and his two substitute appearances have totalled just nine minutes of action, leaving a move away inevitable.

According to the report, he “will leave Leeds on loan this month”, with Gelhardt still having two and a half years left to run on his £15,000 a week deal at Elland Road.

He has been praised by Farke this season despite his lack of opportunities, with the Leeds boss explaining that he is “a really top-class human being and he’s a quality player”.

Though set to leave, where he will head remains unclear, with Witcoop adding that “several Championship clubs have registered an interest”, while there have been “enquiries also from overseas” in his services.

For his part, Gelhardt is reportedly “weighing his future up” as he looks for regular first-team opportunities in a bid to ignite his career.

Mohammad Abbas raises Hampshire's stakes, before Mohammad Amir rips back initiative for Gloucestershire

Pakistani quicks star on compelling day of action at the Ageas Bowl

ECB Reporters Network06-May-2022Mohammad Abbas celebrated his first LV= Insurance County Championship five-wicket haul of the season but Gloucestershire’s ripsnorting evening session snatched the momentum from Hampshire.Hampshire looked set for a first-innings lead in excess of 200 after Abbas ripped through the visitors with a textbook showcase of line and length bowling with 6 for 45. But Ajeet Singh Dale and Jared Warner added 55 for the last wicket to reduce the deficit to 163.And then Mohammad Amir continued the Pakistani bowling dominance with 3 for 22, with Ryan Higgins also pilfering a scalp, to leave Hampshire 28 for 4, with their lead 191.To start the day, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott had failed to reach the bonus point for 350 runs despite a spirited morning effort, with Graeme van Buuren pinning Abbott lbw and Dawson flailing to deep extra cover – Hampshire all out for 342.Abbas came into his own with an incredible seven-over spell of 4 for 16. Abbas’ second over was an Ageas Bowl classic. Marcus Harris left the first ball and pumped the second for three before the overseas signing found George Scott’s tentative outside-edge behind. James Bracey was shelled at third slip first ball, played and missed the second before he finally tickled behind – Abbas coming over, around and then over the wicket again, a plan hatched by Keith Barker during their meeting last year.Hampshire were now in the box seat and relentlessly hunted down further wickets. Miles Hammond was the next to feather Abbas to keeper Ben Brown before van Buuren was leg before on the cusp of lunch.Abbas’ spell initiated murmurs in the Hampshire dressing room that it had produced more heat than other efforts in recent weeks due to compatriots Amir and Naseem Shah watching on.Marcus Harris ended the procession to Abbas by loosely driving Abbott to second slip and Tom Lace had his off stump left lopsided by James Fuller.Ryan Higgins countered with an entertaining 46 in conjunction with Dom Goodman before taking on Felix Organ one too many times to top-edge to deep midwicket. Abbas then completed his five-wicket haul with a short ball into Goodman’s ribs, which was gloved through to Brown. Amir followed two balls later with a sharp edge to second slip – Abbas celebrating by running down to his friend and laying his hands on his shoulder in a consolidatory manner. The hosts debated whether to enforce the follow-on or not at the fall of that ninth wicket, only for Dale and Warner to put on 55 – the highest partnership of the innings. Dale, against his former county, laughed at his No.11 billing with a brisk 36. Organ eventually got Warner to push to short leg to bowl Gloucestershire out for 179.Gloucestershire’s glee was increased as, in 11 evening overs, Amir had Organ jabbing to the cordon second ball, before Ian Holland fell in the following over – caught behind attempting to leave Higgins.Abbott and Abbas were lbw in successive balls to Amir coming around the wicket, as Hampshire saw their openers and tail disappear in a little over 45 minutes of havoc.
