Everton fans react as club agrees compensation fee with Watford for Marco Silva

[ad_pod ]

According to The Telegraph, Everton have agreed a £4m compensation fee with Watford for Marco Silva, whom the Toffees appointed as their manager in the summer.

Hertfordshire outfit Watford were furious with their fellow Premier League club after attempts were made to bring the Portuguese north in November 2017 following the sacking of then-boss Ronald Koeman, although, now that an agreement has been reached, this is surely the end of the matter.

The former Hornets boss filled the vacant role left by Sam Allardyce at the Goodison Park helm prior to the start of the 18/19 season but has had far from an enjoyable time on Merseyside so far.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Silva’s side have largely underperformed and, despite their respectable position in the standings, will surely feel that they should be doing better. They have lost five of their last six games in all competitions and are in desperate need of a result against Cardiff, who they face on Tuesday.

Here’s how the Evertonians reacted on Twitter…

Celtic: Jota out for ‘a few weeks’

Celtic winger Jota is set to be missing for ‘a few weeks’ with a hamstring issue, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Jota’s form

Jota has been in brilliant form in recent months after settling into Parkhead life following a summer switch from Benfica.

The 22-year-old, who the Hoops have the option to sign permanently, has been involved in 14 goals in 18 appearances in green and white.

However, he went off injured against Hearts at the beginning of the month and missed the 3-0 win over Dundee United on Sunday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-17/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Four-game absence?

As reported by John McGinley, Postecoglou – who has called Jota ‘outstanding’ – revealed prior to the win at Tannadice that the Portuguese winger will ‘miss a few weeks’ with his hamstring problem.

Should that prove to be two weeks, the 22-year-old could miss up to four games for the Hoops, including the League Cup final against Hibernian on December 19.

The Verdict: Injury issues continue…

Jota wasn’t the only absentee against Dundee United on Sunday. Anthony Ralston and Stephen Welsh also picked up injuries against Hearts and missed the game, while Christopher Jullien is still yet to feature under Postecoglou.

Giorgos Giakoumakis is out with a knee issue and youngster Karamoko Dembele has also been missing since pre-season, and even though Greg Taylor made a return on the weekend, Postecoglou can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to injuries.

Hopefully the New Year will bring better luck on the injury front, but Postecoglou will be without Jota for a while and may have to rely on Mikey Johnston against Real Betis on Thursday.

Jonathan David open to joining West Ham

As per Calciomercato, it appears that yet another player is now keen to join West Ham United as news emerges on Lille star Jonathan David.

The Lowdown: Targets eye Irons move?

According to numerous claims, it seems that a fair few transfer targets are quite keen on the idea of joining the Hammers and are open to a move to east London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard has apparently ‘made it clear’ to West Ham that he wants to join, as per a recent update by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee.

Meanwhile, another reliable source in Evening Standard reporter Jack Rosser revealed earlier this month that Burnley defender James Tarkowski would also be interested.

Eurosport journalist Dean Jones lifted the lid on Manchester City defender Nathan Ake’s stance as well, claiming that the Netherlands international is ‘keen on the prospect’ of joining the Irons if his club will allow it.

As per a claim from Italy, yet another player is open to a London Stadium move.

The Latest: David’s stance is clear…

According to Calciomercato, in-form Lille striker David ‘likes’ the idea of joining either West Ham or Barcelona as the January transfer window looms.

The Canada international has been in fine form, scoring 14 goals in all competitions already this season, including three in the Champions League (Transfermarkt).

The Verdict: Tremendous coup?

David is one of the hottest forward prospects in Europe right now and has also been dazzling on the international stage, with a very impressive 18 goals in 24 caps.

His national team coach, John Herdman, even described the starlet as ‘fearless’ – with the praise hardly ending there.

Writing for The Guardian, French football expert Adam White raved over the 21-year-old’s exploits in a detailed piece and explained how he is transforming into an ‘elite striker’ in Ligue 1, even likening his style to Luis Suarez and Wissam Ben Yedder.

Valued at around £45m by Transfermarkt, his current deal at Lille runs until 2025, putting his club in a strong negotiating stance when it comes to a potential transfer.

For this reason, while David would undoubtedly be a phenomenal signing for West Ham, we believe this could be far too difficult to pull off.

Aaronson could be Leeds’ new Saiz

Leeds United have long lacked a Samuel Saiz-like presence in midfield, but that could soon change.

Last month, the Sunday People reported that the Yorkshire outfit were tracking RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson ahead of a potential move this January transfer window.

It’s thought that the USMNT international fits the athletic profile required to play under Marcelo Bielsa and he has impressed throughout his breakthrough in Austria.

Since then, further fuel has been added to the fire by journalist Pete O’Rourke, who delivered a fresh update to GIVEMESPORT this very week.

“With Aaronson at RB Salzburg, I know Leeds scouts have been watching him,” he revealed.

Of course, the priority at Elland Road appears to be in finding a new central midfielder before deadline day, and there’s a lot to like about the American dynamo.

Signed by Victor Orta in 2017, Saiz soon became a hit with supporters after scoring a hat-trick on his debut for the club. His tenacity and creativity in the engine room made him a very exciting talent but things just did not pan out.

He left after ten goals and 12 assists across 58 appearances (via Transfermarkt) and has never truly been replaced.

Enter Aaronson.

The Salzburg sensation, who former USA legend DeMarcus Beasley dubbed “silky”, has proven to be a major influence for both club and country. From midfield, he’s bagged five goals in only 15 caps, whilst in 51 appearances for the Austrian champions, he has delivered ten goals and 12 assists.

Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, Aaronson has also been lauded as “young” and “exciting” by O’Rourke, and he could offer Leeds some valuable experience in the engine room, having featured in the Champions League numerous times now.

In his six appearances in the competition this season, the 21-year-old averaged two tackles, 1.3 dribbles, 1.2 shots and one key pass per game (via WhoScored), proving to be a major influence at either end of the pitch.

Also likened to Lionel Messi, Aaronsen has been dubbed the “future” of the American game by talent scout Jacek Kulig, who also touted him as “highly talented”.

On the above evidence, Orta could well discover his next Saiz with a move for the Salzburg sensation this month. It’s surely a deal that many around Elland Road would love to see happen, so he must get it done sooner rather than later.

West Ham: ExWHUEmployee drops Phillips update

West Ham United have been handed a boost in their chase to sign Liverpool defender Nat Phillips in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that the Hammers have got their sights set on the centre-back, and ExWHUEmployee has now revealed that David Moyes’ side are “weighing up” a move in this final week of the window.

He said: “Nathan Philips has reportedly told Liverpool that he would like to leave this window and his price is expected to be around £14m. He is another target and someone whose dad shares a good relationship with David Moyes. The club will be weighing up this option against other targets.”

Big boost for Moyes

For all the success West Ham have enjoyed this season in the Premier League – they currently lie in fifth place in the table and just one point off fourth-placed Manchester United – injuries have already played a big part in decimating Moyes’ side.

Centre-back has been the area most impacted through injuries with Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma in particular suffering extended spells out, leaving the Hammers desperately short of options in the middle, so much so that Craig Dawson has had to play through issues of his own.

Speaking earlier this month, Ex said: “Craig Dawson has had some unfair stick in our minds these last few weeks – especially when he has been struggling with injury himself in recent weeks but has played due to our lack of other options (this has not been widely reported elsewhere).”

The fact it’s now being claimed that one of the club’s main targets to improve their options in Phillips, is keen to leave Liverpool and that the Hammers have the added advantage of his dad having a “good relationship” with Moyes, leaves them in good stead in this final week of the transfer window.

If they can get a deal over the line for the centre-back, West Ham fans will surely be buzzing.

Meanwhile, West Ham have made their “first offer” for this Ligue 1 striker…

Everton transfer news Digne, Delph, Tosun

Many Everton fans have been left flocking to some transfer news on Lucas Digne, Fabian Delph and Cenk Tosun.

As per football journalist and transfer expert Santi Aouna, the Goodison Park faithful would ‘like to get rid’ of all three players in the January transfer window.

The latter two are no surprise really, given that Delph is 32 years of age and has struggled with injury problems at the Merseyside club, while Tosun has simply not scored enough goals for the Toffees, and being 30, now is the optimum time to sell.

A lot of Blues supporters seem happy for them to leave, but it is different with Digne. After a reported row with Rafa Benitez, he has missed their last three games in the Premier League, and so could now be sold.

However, he still remains the only senior left-back in the squad, and so selling him over a row that can be patched seems silly business.

Liverpool fans flock to Ronald Araujo claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have erupted with their verdicts as a transfer claim emerged involving Barcelona gem Ronald Araujo.

The 22-year-old, who is currently a regular in the Catalans’ backline, has already impressed his new boss Xavi with his ‘excellent character’ and positivity in training (Heavy).

Indeed, Araujo’s form over this past year has also garnered praise from club legends like Gerard Pique, with the World Cup-winning defender saying that the Barcelona youngster will be a top centre-half for the next ’10 or 15 years’.

Steadily earning a name for himself in La Liga, his performances have also attracted attention from some of the Premier League’s biggest names, including Liverpool. According to ESPN correspondents Moisés Llorens and Samuel Marsden, the Reds and FSG have sent representatives in an approach to the player amid his contract dispute at the Camp Nou.

His current deal expires in 2023 and Barcelona apparently see Araujo as ‘key to the future’ of their club, but they are aware the ‘greats of the Premier League’ pose a real transfer threat. This is where Liverpool and Chelsea come in, with both clubs said to be ‘on the prowl’.

Liverpool fans erupt…

As FSG make their first move for Aruajo by sending emissaries to Catalonia, it’s little wonder this news has prompted many Liverpool fans to erupt on Twitter.

The Uruguay international, who Pique also called ‘physically strong, fast and powerful’, is a valuable commodity with plenty of sell-on value and a winding-down contract.

Liverpool’s stance in potential negotiations is strengthened by his precarious situation, and Barca could feasibly be put under a bit of pressure to sell if he continues to delay a renewal.

Lauded as a centre-back who ‘has everything’ by Pique, Araujo would surely strengthen Liverpool’s backline.

Rangers talks to sign beast "progressing"

A teasing update has emerged on Rangers and their efforts to fast track John Souttar’s arrival at Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

Edinburgh News journalist Barry Anderson has claimed that the Gers are working to agree a deal to sign the centre-back this month.

He Tweeted: “Rangers’ talks with Hearts over John Souttar are progressing but no transfer agreed yet. Seems a matter of time. Will be surprised if he plays for #HMFC again. Not involved at Auchinleck Talbot today.”

Excitement

This teasing claim will surely get Rangers fans excited as it suggests that the club are well on their way to bringing Souttar to Ibrox this month. Whilst Gio van Bronckhorst can rest easy with the knowledge that he is guaranteed to come in the summer, it could be a major boost in the short term to have him arrive six months earlier.

Bringing the central defender to Glasgow this month could improve the Gers’ chances of achieving success domestically and in Europe as he could be an upgrade to the starting XI.

Souttar has averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.44 across his 19 Premiership starts. He has won 70% of his individual duels and made 4.3 clearances per game, showing off his defensive quality at this level.

Former Hearts boss Craig Levein once hailed the defender as one of the best in the division, saying:

“I’ve known him since he was 12 years old and he’s just got better and better. When he came here from Dundee Utd, we just needed to give him time. He’s grown into the player that I hoped he would be and for me he’s the best centre back in Scotland.

“Just for the fact that he can do wonderful things. His passing of the ball Saturday was fantastic, but he is also now capable physically of competing with any centre forward. His pace is very, very good and he’s strong, focused and aggressive.”

Meanwhile, no Rangers player outside of James Tavernier (7.80) has managed a higher rating than Souttar in the league. Connor Goldson’s score of 7.15 is the highest of any centre-back in the squad, suggesting that the Hearts man has been head and shoulders above any of van Bronckhorst’s current options.

Therefore, bringing the 25-year-old in this month could be a huge move by Ross Wilson and the Dutch head coach and fans will surely be excited by the prospect of him lining up for the club this season. That is why they will be delighted with this latest update on the pursuit by Anderson.

Newcastle transfer news on Osimhen

This forms part of our Transfer Watch series, where The Transfer Tavern analyse whether a club should sign a transfer target based on a recent performance.

The Lowdown: Newcastle lurking for Osimhen

It has been widely reported that Newcastle will now look to battle a number of big European clubs to try and sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli in the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, St James’ Park is not thought to be his preferred destination in the Premier League, and with the likes of top-four chasers Tottenham Hotspur reportedly joining the race, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) may face an uphill battle to try and bring the Nigeria striker to Tyneside.

The Latest: Great individual performance from Osimhen

Even though Napoli lost 3-2 at home to Fiorentina in Serie A on Sunday afternoon, Osimhen put in a great individual performance, scoring one goal and supplying an assist as he ranked as their best player on SofaScore.

The Nigeria international won five of his individual duels, bettered only by two of his team-mates, while he also completed one successful dribble and a team-high three key passes (SofaScore).

The Verdict: Sign him

Given Callum Wilson’s injury problems this season, and the fact that Chris Wood has only managed two goals since arriving from Burnley in the January transfer window, the Magpies should be looking to bring in an elite forward to complete their attack for next term.

Described as a ‘perfect’ striker by journalist Aaron West after Sunday’s display, Osimhen would bring Newcastle’s attack to another level. After all, he has now scored 16 goals and provided five assists in total so far this season (Transfermarkt).

Also, he is still only 23 years of age, so he coukd spearhead Eddie Howe’s side for many years to come.

Richarlison ‘certain’ to leave Everton

Everton are having a nightmare season currently embroiled in a difficult relegation battle with manager Frank Lampard hoping his team can pull themselves into safety and secure Premier League football next season by picking up points over the next few months, but it could be too little too late for some of the players who may have had enough.

What’s the word?

Speaking to Football FanCast, popular transfer insider, Dean Jones, has revealed three players that could potentially leave the club this summer, with one player in particular nailed on to leave Goodison Park when the season ends.

“I think Richarlison is certain to go, Calvert-Lewin might follow him out the door, we’ll have to see about Pickford.”

Richarlison has already been linked over the last week with a move to Manchester United according to Goal.

Another Everton disaster

Everton have been out of luck all season, with injury problems plaguing the team, a managerial sacking and experienced players like Lucas Digne and James Rodriguez leaving the club during the campaign, so the idea that three of the most important players at the club could leave this summer would be a further daunting prospect for the Toffees.

Richarlison has become a key component in the attacking threat for Everton, scoring 47 goals and supplying 12 assists to his team-mates during his time at the club, and losing a player who has become a fan favourite at the club, would not put the owners or the board in the good books at Goodison Park as the relationship between Moshiri and the fans is already extremely fragile.

The pressure is on for Frank Lampard to deliver and secure top-flight football next season for the Merseyside club, and it seems that the pressure could intensify further if the rumours that Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin could follow the £110k-per-week Brazilian striker out of the door should he choose to leave this summer.

Everton are now three points clear of the relegation zone but they are not out of the woods yet, and the former Chelsea boss will be hoping that his team will be fresh, well-rested and ready to go as they make the final push over the next few weeks to avoid relegation this season from the Premier League.
