Wolves transfer update on Mosquera

Many Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Yerson Mosquera.

As per the official website of the Midlands club, the central defender is their first signing of the summer window, subject to a medical and work permit.

He will sign on a deal for five years, and as technical director Scott Sellars has claimed, had ‘a lot of interest’ from other teams across Europe.

Sellars also described Mosquera as a player who is ‘very athletic, very aggressive, very competitive’ and ‘has a great attitude to defending’.

These are certainly qualities that should assure that the Colombian will be able to cope with both the physical and aerial demands of the Premier League, and at just 20 years of age, he clearly has a lot of potential that can be fulfilled while at Molineux.

Gattuso could rock Spurs’ mercenaries

A surprising new name has emerged in Tottenham Hotspur’s manager search this week…

What’s the word?

According to Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato, Daniel Levy has put Gennaro Gattuso on his list of potential candidates, as it’s widely expected that the 43-year-old will leave Napoli this season.

Speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (via CalcioNapoli24), he said: “Gattuso will not be the Napoli coach from Monday, the Napoli players have known for months that Rino will no longer be the Napoli coach. Lazio and Juventus are on Gattuso, but the news of the day is that Tottenham have put Gattuso on the list of candidates for the next coach.

“The English club have been dealing with [Antonio] Conte for a month but now also like Gattuso. Tottenham president Daniel Levy has seen many Napoli matches and has watched Gattuso closely. He was impressed by the quality of the game and the quality of the ideas, seeing the matches against Milan and Roma.”

Watch out Spurs stars

Spurs have been linked with plenty of candidates since the sacking of Jose Mourinho just over a month ago and this one certainly comes out of left-field.

Most recently, The Athletic suggested that there were four names on the shortlist – Graham Potter (Brighton), Erik ten Hag (Ajax), Roberto Martinez (Belgium), and Ralf Rangnick (unemployed) – whilst the reliable Alasdair Gold has suggested that strong new names are emerging all the time.

Could Gattuso be one of those?

Many in North London will know all about the former AC Milan midfielder, as he was involved in a controversial incident during a Champions League tie in 2011. The skipper headbutted Harry Redknapp’s assistant Joe Jordan on the sidelines following a 1-0 win for Spurs at the San Siro.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-managerial-latest-update-transfer-rumours-gossip” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, managerial gossip, transfer rumours and more!”]

“Gattuso had a flare-up with Joe Jordan. I don’t know why,” claimed the former Spurs manager, via The Guardian. “He obviously hadn’t done his homework. He could’ve picked a fight with somebody else. Putting his head into Joe’s face, it was crazy. He lost his head.”

This sort of attitude has hardly changed as he’s transitioned into a coaching career. Back in November, Corriere dello Sport (via Daily Mail) reported that the Italian had clashed with his Gli Azzurri squad.

“I’ve been talking about this for months now. I see an attitude I don’t like and it hurts me. We need to sort this aspect out as soon as possible,” Gattuso fumed.

It was thought that this remark left the players furious and that’s hardly a surprise given his previous comments on the ‘modern-day footballer,’ once claiming: “When I lost a match I broke down in frustration. Today players lose, take a selfie and put it on the Internet. They make me sick.”

His record is actually quite respectable, but it has mostly been his time in Naples which has drawn success, clinching the Coppa Italia last season and registering a 58.75% win rate in charge.

In fact, former Milan superstar Kaka described him as “a phenomenon”, as he demands the best from his teams in training and tries to motivate them with the same sort of energy his displayed on the pitch, as per Football Italia.

What is clear, though, is that his potential appointment could certainly fire a rocket right through this Spurs squad – players like Dele Alli, who was dubbed “lazy” by Jose Mourinho, and Erik Lamela, who has done very little in the eight years he’s been here, should be worried if Gattuso gets the gig.

The same players who let Mauricio Pochettino down in those fateful few months after their Champions League heartbreak in 2019 are pretty much the ones which saw Jose Mourinho face a premature departure from north London.

If there isn’t much of a squad overhaul in the coming months, then Gattuso could be the man to get Spurs back on the straight and narrow.

Leicester linked to Boubakary Soumare

Leicester City have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

What’s the story?

The Foxes proposed deal for the 22-year-old powerhouse could be completed earlier than expected after France’s Under-21’s were surprisingly knocked out of the Euro’s by the Netherlands.

A Myron Boadu double saw off Sylvain Ripoll’s side in the quarter-final stage despite several star names such as Dayot Upemecano, Ibrahima Konate and Houssem Aouar making the France starting XI.

Rodgers will be delighted

Previous reports have revealed that an £18 million fee has been agreed between Lille and the FA Cup holders for Soumare, although contract details were expected to be completed after this summer’s tournament.

With France boasting an embarrassment of riches, they were expected to go all the way in the U21 Euros, delaying the youngster’s arrival at the King Power Stadium, but that will no longer be an issue.

The news will have delighted Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, who is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of another top-four push in 2021/22 and now, if the signing can be completed in the near future, he should be able teo spend more time with Soumare in pre-season, which will obviously be hugely adventageous.

Just a single point separated the Midlands outfit and fourth-placed Chelsea in the recently concluded campaign, meaning Rodgers’ men missed out on a Champions League qualification spot by the narrowest of margins.

It’s the second consecutive season that that’s happened to the 2016 Premier League champions and a host of potential summer additions have been muted as their Northern Irish manager’s aims to break into the top-flight’s upper echelons at the third time of asking.

The addition of Soumare could have a potentially dramatic effect upon Leicester’s chances of doing just that, with the box-to-box midfielder continuously impressing throughout his 112 appearances for Les Dogues.

Marc Ingla, Lille’s former CEO, described him as “a powerful and technical player who can evolve to several positions in the field” upon his arrival at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy four years ago, and he’s had no trouble living up to those expectations.

The Paris Saint-Germain academy graduate made 32 league appearances as Christophe Galtier’s side ended the capital club’s three-year dominance of French football, and Rodgers will be hoping Soumare can contribute to another giant-killing next season.

Newcastle interested in Lille’s Boubakary Soumare

Newcastle United could sign a perfect alternative to Arsenal star Joe Willock with a move for Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

What’s the story?

After another difficult season in the Premier League this year, the Magpies will be keen to turn their attentions towards the summer transfer window and how best to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.

And, according to The Daily Mail, Steve Bruce’s side will have their work cut out to sign the £21m-rated Soumare, with Leicester now having opened talks to sign the young French starlet.

The report adds that Newcastle have long held an interest in the Lille ace, with Bruce confirming earlier this year that the Magpies even had a big-money bid rejected for him. Now, it seems that the Foxes, and the likes of Everton and Leeds have all entered the race too.

Alternative to Joe Willock

While trying to sign Willock on a permanent deal will surely be one of Bruce’s transfer priorities this summer – the Magpies boss has repeatedly said he wants to start negotiations with the Gunners to that effect – as a young, talented English midfielder, he will surely come at a premium, even in this deflated market.

In Soumare, Bruce could land a potentially cheaper alternative, given the financial struggles being endured by French sides this season. And, the 22-year-old isn’t a mug on the pitch either.

Lille president Gerard Lopez has previously raved about about the Frenchman, saying: “He’s one of the very best at his job. He’s technical, with incredible physical power and wins a great deal of possession. He’s a modern No.6 or 8. We’ll see him in the France team very soon. He’s a clear vision of where he wants to go and he’s working very hard to get there.”

And, his teammate at Lille, Renato Sanches, said: “He’s a great player. He’s so young and a great talent – a happy and humble guy. I don’t know when he’s going. It’s not my business. But he will be a good player in the future. Even better than now. He’s athletic. He’s fast. He’s strong. He has technique. He’s prepared for the Premier League.”

If Willock does prove to be too expensive and out of reach for the Magpies, then Newcastle must absolutely look to tie up a deal for Soumare, especially after reports they were in for him before too.

Meanwhile, Bruce must avoid an unforgivable Newcastle howler this summer…

Stewart urges Spurs to not appoint Conte

Tottenham Hotspur are still yet to appoint a new manager after parting ways with Jose Mourinho in April but Paul Stewart, who was signed by Spurs as a striker but later reverted to a holding midfielder, has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Spurs should look to someone other than Antonio Conte.

Conte has recently just won the Serie A title with Inter Milan, the club’s first league title in 11 years and during his two years in England, he managed to guide Chelsea to a Premier League crown title as well as an FA Cup victory despite the club finishing 10th the season before he took over.

The Italian has been linked with a sensational return to England with Chelsea’s rivals, Spurs, as Daniel Levy continues to whittle down his shortlist of candidates until he finds what he believes to be the perfect manager – reports suggest Levy has been in talks with Conte for the last month.

Despite his links to Chelsea, that would not prove to be a barrier if he did come to Spurs but they should be looking for someone else, that’s according to Stewart, who spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern:

“Something wasn’t quite right between him and the players at Chelsea despite winning trophies, but for me, I’d probably look elsewhere and try to rebuild the club.

“They’ve got to bring a manager in that they trust will be able to build over a few years, because Spurs need to look at a different way in which they employ managers because it has to be about bringing players through for the long term.”

Spurs lost the chance to have their Europa League destiny in their own hands following their surprise 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa earlier this week, which saw Sergio Reguilon score a stunning own goal.

Ryan Mason’s side did guarantee a spot in the European Conference League following their 4-2 win against Leicester City on Sunday.

Martyn backs Leeds’ Van Aanholt move

Patrick van Aanholt would be a good signing for Leeds United this summer, according to former Whites goalkeeper Nigel Martyn.

Marcelo Bielsa is likely to be on the lookout for a new left-back at the end of the season, with Ezgjan Alioski set to move on to pastures new.

It may be that an experienced head comes in and Crystal Palace stalwart Van Aanholt has been linked with a move to Elland Road.

The 30-year-old’s current deal at Selhurst Park expires in the summer, so Leeds could snap the Dutchman up on a free transfer.

Martyn discusses potential Van Aanholt move

Speaking to LeedsUnited.News, Martyn believes Van Aanholt would be a shrewd addition by Bielsa, even though he hasn’t always always been impressed by him:

“I have seen him play for Palace really well – but against Everton he was average. But I have seen him play really well for Palace, he scores the odd goal and links up well with [Wilfried] Zaha. He is looking to move from Palace.

“That is a possibility, if Alioski – he’s been entertaining if nothing else, and does quite well on occasion. But he wants his contract to run out and get a good pay day somewhere, you can’t blame him.

“Van Aanholt is not a bad full-back, but I wasn’t impressed with him against Everton. They’ll have watched him – he will certainly prefer playing at Elland Road than Selhurst Park, to play football. Bobbly surface!”

Transfer Tavern take

Van Aanholt may be not an earth-shattering transfer that will drastically improve the Leeds side, but bringing him in for free in place of Alioski makes perfect sense.

The defender, who earns £55,000 per week currently, has a huge amount of experience in the Premier League, having played for Palace and Sunderland in the division over the past seven years.

Granted, Van Aanholt only has one assist this season, but he would likely be given more attacking freedom under Bielsa than Roy Hodgson, and his attacking play has often been his best asset, scoring at least two goals in six of his seven full top flight campaigns.

Two fixtures involving Villa have been rescheduled due to broadcast rights, with the club confirming the alterations on their official Twitter page on Wednesday afternoon.

Dean Smith’s side will now take on Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, May 1 at 8pm, with the game available to watch on BT Sport.

Villa’s next fixture against Manchester United will take place eight days later on Sunday, May 9 at 2:05pm, broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Villa’s home clash against Everton is still yet to be rescheduled after being postponed back in January due to health protocol issues at Villa Park.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Semenyo links

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been giving their thoughts on social media to the club’s interest in Bristol City forward Antoine Semenyo.

According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, the Eagles are thought to be leading the race for the 21-year-old this summer.

Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is believed to be a huge fan of Semenyo, who also has admirers from Brighton, Newcastle, Norwich, Sheffield United, Southampton, Watford and West Ham.

Semenyo is seen as a perfect addition to Palace’s squad, with comparisons made to former winger Yannick Bolasie, who also joined from the Robins way back in 2012.

The London-born forward has played on the wing and through the middle this season, scoring five times and registering seven assists.

Palace fans react

It didn’t take long for Palace’s interest in Semenyo to make its way onto social media, with @cpfc_xtra sharing TEAMtalk’s report.

This is what some supporters had to say in reply, with many excited at the links and one describing him as ‘class’.

Tottenham make Dybala enquiry

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur have made an enquiry to Juventus over Serie A star Paulo Dybala – with the report touting a possible swap deal between the two clubs.

Dybala, who has missed a fair amount of matches this season through injury (Transfermarkt), is reportedly back on Tottenham’s radar as links continue to emerge over these recent weeks.

Spurs make Dybala enquiry

Providing the latest, Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claim Spurs have made an enquiry for the £225,000-per-week Argentine but any proposed agreement would have to come in the form of a swap.

Indeed, the Old Lady are allegedly fully aware that they will not be receiving ‘cash only’ offers amid the financial uncertainty caused by coronavirus – with this report touting a possible swap deal as a solution.

Corriere don’t state who could make way from Spurs to bring Dybala to north London, but a swap ‘could arrange the situations both in the bank accounts and on the pitch’.

Transfer Tavern take

While Spurs very publicly tried to sign Dybala in 2019, with the transfer falling through due to a complicated image rights issue, we believe that a move for him now could be illogical from a financial perspective.

Even if a swap could be arranged, the 27-year-old’s sky high reported wages could turn chairman Daniel Levy off.

There is still no doubting his ability despite the absences over 2020/2021 , with the forward still averaging an impressive 2.5 shots and 1.6 key passes per 90 over eight Serie A starts this season (WhoScored).

Italian footballing icon Alessandro Del Piero has lauded him as ‘extraordinary’ (talkSPORT), meanwhile fellow former international Daniele Adani very recently claimed Dybala is still Juve’s ‘most important player’ (Sky Sports via TuttoJuve).

However, amid these circumstances and with the need to invest wisely more paramount than ever, Tottenham signing a much needed leader at the back arguably takes precedent.

Hojbjerg misses Zagreb clash for Spurs

When asked about the latest Tottenham Hotspur team news, manager Jose Mourinho confirmed the latest to football.london – with Spurs star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set to miss the Europa League clash tonight against Dinamo Zagreb through suspension.

The Dane, who will not feature tonight, joins the likes of Son Heung-min (injury) and Joe Rodon (ineligible) on the list of players unable to take part this afternoon.

Jose Mourinho confirms Tottenham team news

Hojbjerg, who signed for Tottenham in the summer, has debatably been one of their best signings of that window alongside Sergio Reguilon – and he could be a miss.

Mourinho is predicted by reliable Lilywhites correspondent Alasdair Gold to play both Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks in midfield as a replacement for the Dane while Erik Lamela, Dele Alli and Steven Bergwijn play further in front of him.

Tottenham hold a solid 2-0 advantage over the Croatian giants heading into tonight’s second leg, courtesy of a brace from Harry Kane in north London, and Mourinho has also confirmed that the Englishman is set to start this afternoon.

Giovani Lo Celso, who has been sidelined for months, is also ‘back to the squad’ according to Mourinho.

As Hojbjerg is set to miss the Zagreb clash, with Mourinho previously hailing him as a ‘phenomenal player’, it remains to be seen how Tottenham line up in midfield.

In other news: Daniel Levy will be offered this ‘extraordinary’ star, find out more here.
