Sunderland team news on Nathan Broadhead

Sunderland have revealed a positive three-word update on Nathan Broadhead ahead of their game at Wigan Athletic in League One this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Missing in action

Broadhead has not played for the Black Cats since scoring against Arsenal in the 5-1 loss in the Carabao Cup in revealed that the 23-year-old was back in training with the squad on Thursday as he aims to step up his recovery from a hamstring injury.

It does not seem likely that the Welsh striker will play any part in the match against the Latics, but Neil will be hoping that he can now slowly ease him back in ahead of a busy end to the season.

The Latest: Broadhead update

Sunderland’s social media channels offered a teasing glimpse as to whether Broadhead might figure at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Taking to Twitter, the club posted a three-word update on the 23-year-old, with a picture of him walking through the doors at the ground wearing a beaming smile along with the caption: “Back on Wearside”.

The Verdict: Positive

It is certainly promising to see that Broadhead is back on his feet as the Black Cats aim to get back on track in their hunt for promotion to the Championship.

The reality is that they have only won three of their last 12 games without the Everton loanee, and no wins in their last six (Transfermarkt) highlights Broadhead’s importance to the team.

He still remains their second-top scorer this season with seven goals, and Ross Stewart certainly needs help in that area if Sunderland are going to fire their way up the table. Nonetheless, at least Broadhead’s return to training is positive to hear after their tough start to 2022.

Leeds United eye Montreal’s Djordje Mihailovic

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch is already making movements behind-the-scenes, with the club already lining up a potential transfer target for the summer…

What’s the story?

According to journalist Manuel Veth, the new Whites manager is considering making Montreal forward Djordje Mihailovic his first signing at Elland Road.

Imagine him and Raphinha

A versatile attacker who predominantly plays off the left flank, the 23-year-old Mihailovic is the kind of exciting winger that would make for a very dynamic wing tandem with Raphinha.

Mihailovic has also come in for some rave reviews from some of the greats of the game, with his former teammate at Chicago Fire, Bastian Schweinsteiger, saying: “You can see he is a football player, he is technical, clear, he was not always passing the ball to the first option, but also the second option.

“He was moving more fluid and not so mechanical. He was also actually confident about himself, that he was better than one or the other. It’s a thing that was good to see, because he knows his strengths. But you also need to have patience as a young player and be willing to learn every day… The most important thing for me is that he’s always ready to learn.”

His performances in the MLS last year were a testament to just how much he has grown as a player, averaging an impressive 2.3 key passes per game, creating 18 official big chances, and chipping in with a whopping 14 assists too – it’s no surprise then that journalist Chris Smith hailed him as a “gorgeous passer” of the ball.

When you compare some of his key stats to Raphinha, it’s arguably even more exciting than Raphinha.

The USA U23 international averages a better successful dribble rate (60% compared to Raphinha’s 44%), wins a better proportion of his total duels, wins back possession more, provides more key passes and crosses, and boasts a far better passing accuracy too.

Mihailovic seems to be the perfect Leeds winger in that not only is he a real dynamic threat going forward with his ability to take players on and deliver an end product, but also has the defensive mind and work ethic to work hard and press from the front.

It’s clear that Marsch is already beginning to make some exciting transfer moves at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star could explode under Jesse Marsch…

Spurs still paying price over Walker exit

Tottenham Hotspur are still paying the price for one of chairman Daniel Levy’s key decisions.

In July 2017, the Spurs supremo sanctioned the exit of right-back Kyle Walker to Premier League rivals Manchester City, a move that saw the north London outfit earn around £53m with add-ons included.

It means the Lilywhites brought in a return in their investment of at least 430% after the England international joined the club in a double deal alongside Kyle Naughton from Sheffield United for around £10m.

Spurs had just finished runners-up to title-winners Chelsea in the season earlier and were very close to becoming champions themselves under Mauricio Pochettino a season earlier with Walker a key part of the squad.

Since then, the right-back role has been something of a nightmare for every manager since – ranging from Jose Mourinho and Nuno Santo to now Conte, who arguably values the position higher than most due to his system utilising wing-backs as key attacking components.

Serge Aurier, academy product Kyle Walker-Peters, Matt Doherty and now Emerson Royal have all failed to convince the man in the dugout that they should be the long-term option in the role…

The latter two remain the Italian’s only two current senior options and it’s rather damning that he wanted to find a replacement during the January transfer window, something that he did not receive.

Indeed, as per The Times, Conte is unconvinced by the pair, especially in the final third, where he needs his wing-back to contribute creatively. As such, Adama Traore emerged as a key target but he instead opted for boyhood club Barcelona.

It’s something that the 52-year-old and sporting director Fabio Paratici can only rectify in the summer and that’s if Conte hasn’t walked by then.

After a disappointing defeat to Burnley in the Premier League last month, he questioned his own future at the club. Yes, emotions were high but there have always been lingering doubts that he could walk if not sufficiently backed and it is the tough-negotiating Levy in charge after all.

Walker, now valued at just £22.5m due to his age (31), has gone on win three Premier League titles and an FA Cup. His performances at Euro 2020 also saw Mourinho laud him as an “absolute animal” as England made the final, where they lost on penalties to Italy.

Spurs’ world-class boss is evidently not happy and it’s easy to see why when they have failed to replace key areas of the squad with sufficient quality for many, many years.

Ultimately, that decision nearly five years ago is still causing an effect today and that’s a worrying situation.

AND in other news, “Shocking” Spurs star who lost the ball 24x badly let Conte down again at Middlesbrough…

Telles proves he’s not good enough vs Spurs

Manchester United stole a much needed three points from Tottenham Hotspur yesterday at Old Trafford, putting them back into the top four ahead of Arsenal’s game against Leicester City this afternoon.

The performance was generally pretty equal between the two teams overall, with the home team actually having less possession (44%) of the ball over the course of the game, however, they had an advantage in the form of the ever inevitable Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese goal machine bagged a hat-trick in a record-breaking performance against Antonio Conte’s side, as his goals in the game yesterday added to the huge tally of career strikes that now makes him the highest-scoring men’s footballer in the history of the game.

Despite the outstanding performance from Ronaldo, the defensive play was questionable yet again from Manchester United, with Harry Maguire gifting Tottenham an own goal in the 72nd minute to level the score-line, although luckily Ronaldo gave his team the lifeline they needed when he found the back of the net for the third time in the 81st minute.

One player in particular who wasn’t up to scratch in the back line was Alex Telles, and his performance for the team certainly did not reflect the final score.

According to SofaScore, the £78k-per-week Brazilian full-back was given the joint lowest rating on the pitch (6.2) and it’s no surprise considering he gave away a penalty in the first half.

However, his statistics also make for a pretty grim read. He lost possession of the ball in every three of his 65 touches, made no interceptions, lost 100% of his aerial duels and lost the majority of his ground duels too (55%). Although he bagged an assist for his corner whipped in for Ronaldo’s third goal, overall the defender was more of a hindrance than a help for his team defensively.

Ralf Rangnick does have another option for the left-back position in Luke Shaw, and it will be interesting to see if the German coach switches up the defensive line yet again for their important Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The game at Old Trafford will be one of, if not the most important of the season for Rangnick’s side, so he must make the right choices on selection to avoid a disaster.

Leeds confident of Ayling extension

Leeds United are ‘confident’ that they will be able to strike a deal with the representatives of right-back Luke Ayling regarding an extension of the 30-year-old’s contract, which is set to expire in 2023.

What’s the story?

According to a source speaking to Football Insider, the Yorkshire club are ‘confident’ of extending the Englishman’s deal at Elland Road by at least one year with his current deal due to expire next summer.

Ayling is currently in his sixth season as a Leeds player having signed from Bristol City for around £200k in August 2016 and has worked his way up to cult hero status amongst Whites supporters.

After what’s been a tricky campaign for the Yorkshire outfit, the right-back produced his best moment of the season on Friday night by scoring the decisive goal to complete a vital 3-2 comeback victory against Wolves at Molineux.

Jesse Marsch’s side are now seven points clear of the relegation zone, but the likes of Everton, Burnley (three), Watford and Brentford (one) all have games in hand.

Supporters will be over the moon

Whilst being a Leeds player, Ayling has certainly seen highs and lows with managerial changes, near misses with promotion before finally securing a long-awaited return to the top-flight in 2020.

The right-back has impressively improved his standard to ensure of a place in the Premier League for Leeds and certainly deserves a new deal.

However, despite the Englishman’s popularity at Elland Road, his age does have to come into question regarding a contract extension, with the 30-year-old set to be two months shy of his 32nd birthday when his current deal expires.

The Yorkshire club will certainly be keen to progress, particularly under Marsch with the American manager signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at Elland Road when replacing Marcelo Bielsa earlier this month.

Therefore, regularly relying on a right-back who is likely to decline won’t be a long-term solution. It is, though, deserved and something that will go down well with supporters given his popularity.

When available, Ayling has played this term, making 21 appearances thus far in the top-flight this season either side of a knee injury that ruled the Englishman out for two months between September and November.

In the league, the right-back has averaged 77 touches per game this season as well as a 79% passing accuracy. Moreover, his contribution defensively is particularly impressive, producing 2.6 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per game.

However, as is expected with the sometimes kamikaze defending of Leeds, the 30-year-old hasn’t yet kept a clean sheet this term.

The right-back position is certainly Ayling’s with Stuart Dallas the only other player recognised as a fully capable fit on that side of the defence, with the Northern Ireland international regularly playing at either left-back or in midfield.

Although Leeds may look elsewhere for a new first-choice right-back in the coming seasons, having a figure as popular as Ayling in the squad will certainly be shrewd and, for his services to the club, the Englishman certainly deserves a contract extension.

Tottenham transfer news on Singo

Antonio Conte reportedly now ‘wants’ to sign Wilfried Singo for Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Lowdown: Defenders wanted

It is no secret that Conte is looking to upgrade his defence, with the likes of Pau Torres and Juan Cuadrado being linked in recent days.

They have conceded 36 times in 29 games in the Premier League so far this season, and having scored more goals than their North London rivals Arsenal, they have conceded five more and suffered two more defeats, which seems to be holding them back for that precious fourth spot at the moment.

The Latest: Singo wanted

As per Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), Conte now ‘wants’ to sign Singo from Torino in the summer, and ‘especially’ likes the player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, his current deal at the Serie A club does not expire until 2023, and there is an option to extend it for a further year.

The Verdict: Big upgrade

Singo, who can play as a right wing-back, would seemingly be a big upgrade on both Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, at least from an attacking sense.

He is currently averaging more shots, dribbles and successful long balls per game in their respective domestic leagues this term (WhoScored), and his three goals and four assists just show how much of an attacking threat he can be.

With ‘own goals’ being the third-most potent source of goals for Spurs this campaign, behind Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, they could really do with more help in other areas of the pitch, and Singo would certainly provide that.

Nonetheless, at just 21 years of age, the Ivory Coast international is only going to get better, and could well be the long-term solution for Conte at right wing-back.

Aston Villa set to land Rory Wilson

Aston Villa look set to pip Liverpool to the signing of Rangers forward Rory Wilson, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Academy additions at Villa

Despite winning a first FA Youth Cup since 2002 last year, Villa have continued to bolster their academy ranks with a number of signings.

Kerr Smith, Finley Thorndike, Finn Azaz, Caleb Chukwuemeka, Declan Frith and Tim Iroegbunam have all made the move to Bodymoor Heath in the last 12 months.

Iroegbunam has been the standout youngster to catch Steven Gerrard’s eye, with the midfielder now regarded as a first-team player after signing a new deal.

The Latest: Wilson next for Villa?

The Scottish Sun shared a story on Monday morning, revealing that Villa look set to pip Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in the race for Wilson’s services.

The 16-year-old has been labelled a goal machine, with Villa needing to pay a compensation fee to Rangers, believed to be in the region of £300,000.

The Verdict: Exciting move

Wilson looks like he could be a star in the making, going by the widespread interest that he is receiving from elite clibs.

Therefore, he looks set to be another exciting addition for Villa’s academy, with Rangers now resigned to losing the youngster despite offering him professional terms and Gerrard set to cause frustration for his former club Liverpool.

Crystal Palace: McArthur returns from injury

Crystal Palace have been given a huge boost ahead of their match with Arsenal as £1.3m-rated midfielder James McArthur is expected to return from injury.

The Scotsman was out for 12 weeks earlier this season after he suffered a hamstring tear, before picking up another injury when returning in February.

He has been a key player for the Eagles since he joined from Wigan in 2014 for £7.9m. The 34-year old has made 242 appearances in a Palace shirt and is the vice-captain at Selhurst Park.

His return will be huge for the dressing room, especially considering Palace are without their star forwards Michael Olise and Wilfried Zaha who picked up injuries of their own whilst on international duty.

McArthur’s leadership qualities will be useful against a strong Arsenal side with Vieira describing him as “valuable” and “a warrior” when being interviewed earlier in the season.

The Eagles will be looking to better the result in the reverse fixtures at the Emirates Stadium where it finished 2-2. McArthur featured in that game but was lucky not to be shown a red card after ‘channelling his inner Vieira’ in a crunch tackle on Bukayo Saka.

His defensive attributes can be pivotal in stopping the Gunners, with the veteran midfielder ranking inside the top 10% in the past year across Europe’s top five league for blocks, clearances and recovering loose balls.

While Palace supporters are full of praise for McArthur’s impact, he is one of those players that go under the radar for those who aren’t followers of the club.

He may not be the most entertaining, but he fights and does the work that perhaps some other players are reluctant to.

Despite not featuring much this campaign, his impact has shown he is a player who picks up the ball a lot and has tallied 511 touches in the Palace midfield third, which is higher than Cheikhou Kouyaté who has featured a lot in his place.

Whether he will start in tonight’s game remains to be seen, he might only be partly fit, but as soon as Vieira can use him he should.

He could play a key part in making sure Palace finish as high as possible in the Premier League, meaning his manager will be delighted to have him back fit and firing.

Man Utd have a teen Mainoo replacement who can be a "beast" under Amorim

In a dour few seasons for Manchester United, the key moments have often centred around Kobbie Mainoo, from his last-gasp winner at Molineux, that FA Cup final clincher, or last season’s remarkable equaliser at Lyon.

While Harry Maguire may have secured the winner on that bonkers April night, the relief and frenzy were perhaps even more palpable when Mainoo converted in the last knockings of extra-time, sparking scenes at Old Trafford that arguably haven’t been seen in a generation.

A cynic would say that such a game, such a moment, mattered little as United went on to lose in the Europa League showpiece, but it was hard not to be swept up in the chaos and the joy.

From Ruben Amorim’s smile, to the 20-year-old’s own Joshua Zirkzee-inspired celebration, the Theatre of Dreams has had few more memorable evenings.

The hope was that such a vital goal could help to kickstart Mainoo’s journey under the new regime, yet over six months later, a 2026 exit now appears the most likely outcome.

The latest on Kobbie Mainoo's Man Utd future

Amorim, speaking after the recent draw with West Ham United, appeared somewhat irked at the repeated questions regarding his treatment of the Stockport-born star, having almost scoffed at suggestions that Mainoo could have been a more attack-minded change.

The 40-year-old went on the defensive again in the pre-match press conference ahead of Bournemouth, also pointing to the ‘struggles’ of the likes of Toby Collyer, Chido Obi and Harry Amass this season as a possible justification for his use of the academy ranks.

That young trio, with a combined 28 United appearances between them, are indeed relatively unproven, but in the case of Mainoo, supporters have seen the brilliance that he can bring to the table.

A “generational talent”, in the view of ex-teammate Rasmus Hojlund, the £25k-per-week midfielder has failed to start a single Premier League game in 2025/26, with Amorim instead leaning on the experienced pairing of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

With the Brazilian suspended for the upcoming trip to Villa Park, Mainoo might have a route to increased game time, although it will take a lot to quieten the speculation over his future, amid reports that he is keen on joining Hojlund and co at Napoli.

A loan move to the Serie A side has been touted, while a string of Premier League clubs are also in the mix for his signature, with the Euro 2024 star seeking a more prominent role in this vital World Cup year.

As much as it would be depressing to see Mainoo depart, his relationship with Amorim appears to be heading in only one direction.

At least, however, there are those at Carrington for the United boss to call upon as potential replacements.

Man Utd already have Mainoo's replacement brewing at Carrington

Unlike last term, which saw Obi, Amass and Tyler Fredricson all promoted into the first-team set-up, no academy player has debuted under Amorim in 2025/26, even with 18-year-old Shea Lacey a regular fixture on the bench in recent weeks.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Perhaps, with Casemiro sidelined and Manuel Ugarte also looking destined for his own exit, that situation might change before too long, with Carrington boasting a handful of exciting midfield talents worthy of closer inspection.

Homegrown stars like Jim Thwaites and Jack Fletcher have regularly been seen in first-team training, although it is 2024 arrival, Sekou Kone, who might be closest to a senior appearance, even while still stepping up his recovery from injury.

It was suggested over the summer that United weren’t looking to loan out the 19-year-old, as he was viewed as the fifth-choice option in central midfield, behind Fernandes, Casemiro, Mainoo and Ugarte.

Signed from Malian side FC Guidars on a £1m deal 18 months ago, the teenager was notably included in the matchday squad on three occasions in the Premier League last season, memorably forming part of a youthful bench in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur back in February.

As a true defensive-minded midfielder, the towering gem appears to have the attributes to slot in nicely into Amorim’s midfield unit, with scout Antonio Mango among those suggesting that he can be a “beast” in the first-team ranks.

The Mali youth international has actually only made two appearances at youth level this season, after fracturing his eye socket, yet with the first-team facing a hectic festive schedule, it would be no surprise to see him parachuted in over the coming weeks.

Lauded as a “box-to-box midfielder who’s extremely efficient at both ends of the pitch”, in the view of Mango, the “hidden gem” talent could well save INEOS from having to dip into the market for a replacement, should Mainoo be allowed to head off to pastures new.

Crystal Palace eye January move for Man City star amid Brennan Johnson roadblock

Crystal Palace are now targeting a Man City sensation after being dealt a roadblock in their pursuit of Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson, according to a new report.

Amid the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future and murmurs that he won’t be signing a new deal, manager Oliver Glasner is still prioritising attacking reinforcements next month after a good start to the campaign.

Crystal Palace manager OliverGlasnerbefore the match

The south Londoners are still well in contention for a European place, but they quite simply need more options if they’re to maintain that charge, with Ismaila Sarr’s AFCON departure leaving them even more exposed.

The Eagles are particularly light out wide, as only Sarr, Yeremy Pino and Romain Esse are viewed as natural options in those positions, though Eddie Nketiah has also been deployed on the flanks in recent weeks out of necessity.

Crystal Palace learn Brennan Johnson stance on January transfer from Tottenham

The Wales international is a key target heading into the winter.

ByEmilio Galantini

Recent reports suggest that Palace are eyeing Johnson as a serious option ahead of the winter window, with credible media sources believing that the 24-year-old could leave next month after falling out of favour under Thomas Frank.

Steve Parish and co are also apparently more advanced than other suitors, but reportedly face stiff competition from the likes of Aston Villa.

Make no mistake, Palace’s primary attacking target is Johnson, but the Welsh international’s £50 million price tag also represents a significant ‘stumbling block’ for Glasner’s side.

That is according to talkSPORT, who report that Palace do have an alternative to the Spurs winger.

Crystal Palace eye January move for Oscar Bobb

Indeed, Man City’s Oscar Bobb has emerged as a potentially more viable plan B option should Palace fail to secure their top target, with the 22-year-old also attracting interest from Fulham and La Liga side Sevilla.

The versatile winger can operate comfortably on either flank and would add unpredictability, pace and technical quality to Glasner’s attacking options.

Bobb’s potential availability in January hinges entirely on whether City complete their pursuit of Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout attacking talents this season.

The Ghana international favours a move to the Etihad Stadium despite interest from several other top-flight clubs, and his release clause of £65 million must be triggered within the first 10 days of the January transfer window.

City are understood to be open to offers for Bobb next month, either on a permanent basis or a loan, having previously considered selling the player last summer before ultimately deciding to retain him.

The Norwegian has struggled for prominence this season, despite returning from the serious leg fracture that derailed his entire 24/25 campaign and kept him sidelined until April.

Bobb has managed nine Premier League appearances totaling 467 minutes with just one assist this term, which came against Wolves on the opening day, and the recent promotion of Rayan Cherki to the starting lineup has further limited his chances.

Since making his debut in September 2023, Bobb has managed 47 senior appearances for City, contributing three goals and four assists across all competitions, with Guardiola recently calling him a ‘machine’.

However, both player and club had hoped his appearance tally would be significantly higher by this stage, with the unfortunate injury on the eve of last season ruining those development plans.

Now, a fresh start could be mutually beneficial to both Bobb and Palace.
