Newcastle man who Gary Neville loves agrees terms to leave St James’ Park

It's been a season full of frustration for Newcastle United, who made such significant progress in the previous campaign by qualifying for the Champions League. After a summer of transfers to forget, followed by a limited winter window, they could now see their misery compiled by the potential exit of a vital cog in the St James' Park machine.

Newcastle exit news

Throughout the January transfer window, the likes of Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier were among the players to be linked with moves away from Newcastle, who found themselves walking a profit and sustainability tightrope due to their reported £155m in losses over the last three seasons. Despite that figure, however, Eddie Howe kept hold of his stars.

It remains to be seen whether that will be the case during the summer though, with Joelinton potentially one to keep an eye on. The Brazilian's contract runs out in the summer of 2025 and Howe admitted that he could yet leave, saying via BBC Sport: "He has 18 months left on his contract so it's a possibility he'll be sold in the summer."

Newcastle now winning the race to sign “wonderful” in-demand gem for Howe

This would be some coup…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 14, 2024

Making matters worse, it's not just those on the pitch that the Magpies have to worry about. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Dan Ashworth has agreed terms with Manchester United to become their first-ever sporting director. Ashworth – currently the sporting director at Newcastle – would take a lengthy period of gardening leave before completing his Old Trafford switch to join up with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

It would be some blow for Newcastle, given how vital Ashworth's been to their project since 2022, building a squad capable of reaching the Premier League's top four. Just who they get in to replace the former Brighton & Hove Albion man is not yet clear, but Luke Edwards has claimed that former Liverpool man Michael Edwards is a name which has crept up in conversations.

Major blow for Newcastle

One of the most impressive in his role, Ashworth's exit, should it occur, could leave Newcastle's project under PIF in tatters. Meanwhile, Manchester United would be getting the perfect sporting director to finally start to organise the chaos of Old Trafford.

Gary Neville has already given his seal of approval when it comes to Ashworth too, posting on X back in November of last year:

At a time when Newcastle have been left more frustrated than ever off the pitch under PIF, Ashworth's exit would be coming at the worst time possible ahead of a vital summer transfer window. Not only will the Magpies have to think about incomings to improve Howe's side, but also restructuring away from St James' Park, potentially forced to replace their sporting director.

Bellingham joins England leadership groupThree Lions boss Southgate explains decisionPreparing to face Serbia in Euro 2024 openerWHAT HAPPENED?

Southgate revealed that the 20-year-old has been promoted to a select group of leaders, namely captain Harry Kane, Kyle Walker and Declan Rice. The England boss wants them to gauge the mood of the squad and use them as a conduit to speak to him about any concerns they have – and in Bellingham's case, especially the younger ones.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT GARETH SOUTHGATE SAID

He said: “I think we have a very open relationship with all of the players. We’ve put a small leadership group together for this tournament now with Harry, Kyle Walker, Declan Rice, and Jude Bellingham because there is a different dynamic to this group, there’s a lot of younger players.

“I want to make sure the voices of the younger players, that I’m really in touch with that as well. I don’t want to leave here with any stone unturned, I don’t want to have missed anything. It’s always important to know what the players are thinking, they have good views, they have good experiences.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham has been magnificent for Real Madrid this season and the fact that the Champions League and La Liga winner is being trusted to be part of this leadership group shows how highly Southgate rates the midfielder. Only Kobbie Mainoo, 19, and Adam Wharton, 20, are younger than the former Borussia Dortmund man in the England squad.

Manager who West Ham have wanted for a long time is open to English move

West Ham United have been eyeing one "creative" manager for a long time, and it is believed that he's open to making a move to England.

West Ham exploring Moyes alternatives amid dwindling contract

Current head coach David Moyes finds himself under fire once again, following a winless start to 2024 which has seen the Hammers slide further down the league table.

The Irons are said to really want him.

Heavy defeats to the likes of Arsenal and Man United certainly haven't helped Moyes' case either, with the Scotsman front and centre to backlash from some supporters who believe he's taken them as far as they can.

West Ham won their first major trophy in nearly 40 years under Moyes last term, lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League title in Prague, but flirted with relegation to the Championship domestically.

Their league form hasn't been great since the summer of 2022, with Moyes also nearly getting sacked by West Ham last year as well. As the 60-year-old's contract looks set to expire at the end of this season as things stand, it is widely reported that West Ham are considering alternative managerial options to Moyes.

“I can confirm that the club are looking at alternative options,” stated club insider ExWHUemployee this week.

"Tim Steidten is the man heavily involved and leading the potential drive to replace Moyes, should he depart. There have been various names mentioned in the press, however at this stage its very early, with the club still hoping David Moyes turns the situation around. The club though are, and rightly so, planning ahead should the manager depart.”

A few names have been linked with the potentially vacant post already, but one standout name is Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel, who is now confirmed to be leaving this summer after the Bundesliga club's announcement.

The 50-year-old, who won a Champions League title as head coach of Chelsea in 2021, hasn't exactly had the best time in Bavaria as they fall far behind Bayer Leverkusen in the race for a Bundesliga title.

If Tuchel's side miss out on the German top-flight crown, it will be for the first time since Borussia Dortmund pipped them to the title in 2012.

Tuchel open to English move as West Ham hold "long-standing" interest

According to The Daily Mail and journalist Sami Mokbel this week, West Ham hold a "long-standing" interest in Tuchel, and it is believed the German is open to making a move back to England.

However, the Hammers may not be the only side in pursuit of a new head coach this summer, with the likes of Liverpool also named as potential contenders for Tuchel.

The former PSG boss is an elite name, and Man City's Pep Guardiola has previously lavished him with praise.

"He’s so creative with good build-up and connection, good runners and players who are good in the spaces," said Guardiola on Tuchel before their Champions League final clash in 2021.

“Both [Tuchel and Nagelsmann] are so creative with the shape they play."

According to negotiations between Chelsea and Boca Juniors are progressing well, with both clubs moving toward a final agreement. Although a deal has not yet been officially concluded, the discussions have reached an advanced stage, and personal terms are reportedly not expected to pose any significant hurdles. The Brazilian is set to sign a six-year contract that will tie him to Chelsea until 2030.

Strasbourg, who have been integrated into Chelsea’s multi-club ownership model, serve as an essential platform for developing young talent. Players like Angelo Gabriel and Andrey Santos have benefited from loan spells at the French club, gaining valuable experience and honing their skills. Anselmino is expected to follow in their footsteps as he will also be loaned to the side to facilitate his transition into European football, providing him with the competitive match experience needed to thrive at Chelsea in the future.

DID YOU KNOW?

Chelsea's interest in Anselmino is part of a larger trend within the club's recruitment strategy, which focuses on acquiring top-tier talent from South America. Earlier this month, Chelsea confirmed the €57m (£48m/$61m) signing of Palmeiras winger Willian Estevao. The 17-year-old Brazilian will join the squad next summer once he turns 18, further underscoring Chelsea's commitment to investing in young prospects.

Sulakshan Kulkarni turns down Mumbai coach offer, Vinayak Samant reappointed

Sulakshan Kulkarni was supposed to take charge until an ad-hoc committee decided to change the terms of his contract, leading him to decline

Vishal Dikshit27-Aug-2019Mumbai have reappointed Vinayak Samant as their coach in controversial circumstances just before the start of the upcoming domestic season. Samant was retained after former Mumbai coach Sulakshan Kulkarni, who served them from 2011 to 2014, turned the offer down following disagreements with the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) ad-hoc committee, primarily over the remuneration offered to him.Kulkarni claims that when he was initially interviewed in May for the post by Dilip Vengsarkar, chairman of the MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC), he was offered a remuneration of INR 24 lakh for one year, from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020, as posted on the MCA website. However, Kulkarni says, the MCA delayed his appointment and sent him a contract in mid-August with an offer of INR 14 lakh, valid from September 2019 to March 2020, which he turned down.”I told them I won’t accept the contract like this if you reduce the amount from 24 to 14 lakh, there’s no chance” Kulkarni told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s not my mistake because I was ready to take up the job on 1st June. The delay was from their side.”Kulkarni was also unhappy that the MCA made this and other changes in the contract without consulting the CIC. Karsan Ghavri, a member of the CIC, said this was unacceptable.”The ad-hoc committee [of the MCA] cannot overrule a decision which has already been made by the CIC,” Ghavri told . “They should have had a meeting with the CIC to discuss the issue [after Kulkarni did not agree to MCA’s contract terms]. If this is how MCA is going to function by taking their own cricketing decisions, then I don’t wish to be on the CIC. I am going to resign in a couple of days.”We [CIC] held several meetings, each lasting for nearly five hours, to interview coaches and support staff for the junior and senior teams. [By appointing Samant] they have not just treated CIC badly, but also the coaches and support staff.”Kulkarni said there were more changes in the contract he was eventually offered, which didn’t make sense to him.”When I was the Mumbai coach in 2011, the daily match allowance was INR 10,000,” he said. “Now, nearly 10 years later, they are offering only INR 5,000 per day. The amount should have actually gone up, there is no common sense in this.”According to Kulkarni, the MCA also reduced the number of leaves offered from 60 to 15 per year and changed “many other” terms and conditions which he “was not ready for”. Kulkarni said he turned the offer down on August 20.Last week, the MCA then went back to Samant, who had also applied for the post in May as he had been appointed only for the 2018-19 season last year. In that season, he helped Mumbai lift the Vijay Hazare Trophy but they then went downhill and failed to qualify for the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals, and couldn’t make the final in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.”Among the main drawbacks last season was that we didn’t have many pace bowlers and established spinners,” Samant told ESPNcricinfo. “We were banking on only a couple of bowlers out of whom Tushar Deshpande was unfit in the second match. To win matches outright, you need to take 20 wickets. And if you don’t have the bowlers to pick up those wickets, then you’re going to suffer. Then that adds further pressure to the batting which was not up to the mark.”Samant started working with the team in Mumbai on Tuesday and will travel with them to Nagpur on September 4 with a 15-man squad for the Bapuna Cup, a pre-season tournament for which they are trying several fringe players. They have named Suryakumar Yadav captain for the tournament as they want to groom him as a leader for whenever regular captain Shreyas Iyer is unavailable because of national duty. Mumbai are also going to try out 19-year-old Arjun Tendulkar, a left-arm quick, before the domestic season begins.”We want to try him and see how effective he is. I saw Arjun at the MPL (Mumbai Premier League), he bowls very well. He bowls quick and is very accurate,” Samant said.”We’re looking to make Surya the captain in Shreyas’ absence. He’s a very good captain. Surya has had some issues in the past but we’re backing him again and grooming him for captaincy.”

'I'm going to feel 21 again' – Temba Bavuma awaits dream T20I debut

South Africa batsman said although he was “surprised” by the T20I call-up, he always had his mind set on playing in the shorter formats

Going to be a tough task for us against India – Bavuma

Having established himself as a red-ball player over the years, South Africa batsman Temba Bavuma said he was “surprised” by his call-up to the T20I side to play India later this week.In a post World Cup shake-up, South Africa had made a number of changes to their squad for this tour, including appointing Quinton de Kock as captain, keeping next year’s T20 World Cup in mind. Bavuma, who will function as Faf du Plessis’ deputy when the Test series begins on October 2, is extremely keen to showcase his white-ball credentials as well.”I was surprised to be honest,” he said at a press conference in Dharamsala. “Back home there’s a perception that I’m a red-ball player. I knew at the back of my mind that white-ball cricket was something I wanted to play. Fortunately from my good performances in the past season this opportunity has come. It has come a bit earlier than I thought. I’m here now and I’d like to do the most I can.”I’m 29 at the moment. I’m sure when I get the debut I’m going to feel I’m 21 again. I think it’s just another opportunity to contribute to the team’s winning cause.”Bavuma’s selection has come as a result of his recent success in domestic T20s. Since the start of 2018, he has made 491 runs in 19 games. Although he had a poor run in in the Mzansi Super League, where he made just five runs in three innings, he finished the third highest scorer in the CSA T20 challenge earlier this year with 326 runs at an average of 46.57. His maiden T20 hundred came in the final, where he led Lions to a win against Warriors.”Last year I made a conscious effort to improve my white-ball game,” Bavuma said. “I tried to play as many as T20 games as I could in amateur cricket and all the other competitions there. Even in our domestic cricket. And these were the goals that I set. Things that I wanted to achieve and not what other people are saying. You only want to be listening to the voice between your ears as an international player and not all the noise out there.”He also said he wasn’t bogged down by all the perceptions people had on him, especially one being that he was best suited only for the longer formats. “As a player you are put through a lot of challenges. There’s lot of pressure as an international player. People are quick to label you as certain type of player and that could be a good and a bad thing. Proving people wrong is always an extra bit of motivation.”

The main tactic Oliver Glasner will now "assert" at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have officially appointed former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner to succeed Roy Hodgson, and it is believed he will "assert" himself with a clear approach right from the get-go.

Palace announce Glasner appointment

On Monday evening, Palace confirmed the appointment of Glasner in a move which has excited certain sections of the fan base.

While there have been warnings sent to Palace over Glasner's no-nonsense attitude when it comes to control, which could cause issues with chairman Steve Parish, the Austrian's reputation still brings plenty of anticipation over his tenure.

Glasner has a real job on his hands with the Eagles fully in a relegation battle as things stand. They squandered a 1-0 lead away to Everton, conceding a late equaliser from Amadou Onana, and are among the division's lowest-scoring sides.

"I'm delighted to welcome Oliver to the club," said Parish.

"He has an outstanding record, and we believe he is the right manager to take the club forward at this pivotal stage. Wherever Oliver has gone so far in his managerial journey, success has been quick to follow, and we believe his ambition, as well as his exciting and attacking approach is the perfect fit for getting the most from our talented young squad in the remainder of this Premier League season and beyond."

Glasner won the Europa League with Eintracht and also boasts an Austrian second-division title, with the 49-year-old preferring a 3-4-2-1 formation.

"He’s very structured, very well organised, meticulous, observes the opposition very closely and prepares the team very well for them,” said former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac to the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung (via Bundesliga).

“He doesn’t just let Eintracht run their boots off. He adjusts tactics, tries to simulate the opponent during the week in training. Oliver has transferred his ideas of football well to his team because he works methodically, because there’s no chopping and changing.”

Now, journalist Dean Jones has provided further insight into what Glasner will bring to Selhurst Park.

Glasner will "assert" physicality at Crystal Palace

According to the reporter, speaking to GiveMeSport, Glasner will "assert himself" right from the off and introduce physicality at Crystal Palace. Jones also shared a pretty exciting claim from his German sources, who fully expect the tactician to prove successful in south London.

"I think Glasner will assert himself by bringing a sense of physicality to Crystal Palace and also probably more of a modern approach to their attacking set-up than they perhaps had recently," said Jones.

"That won't come overnight. This squad isn't really capable of changing too much in the short term, but it'll get funded in the summer. Judging by what he's done so far in Germany, and judging by what he's capable of from a coaching perspective from people I've spoken to over there, they seem to think that actually, this is a really good appointment for Crystal Palace. After all of the protests from fans and accusations of them lacking ambition, this could actually prove to be a good appointment."

Alyssa Healy's rapid century secures record-breaking Australia victory

Chamari Atapattu made her fifth ODI hundred but it wasn’t enough to challenge Australia

The Report by Andrew McGlashan09-Oct-2019Alyssa Healy continued her prolific run-scoring form by plundering a 71-ball hundred on her way to an unbeaten 76-ball 112 as Australia surged to a record-breaking 18th ODI victory in a row with a nine-wicket hammering of Sri Lanka.Chamari Atapattu’s 103, her fifth ODI hundred and her second century of the tour following her T20I ton in Sydney, anchored Sri Lanka’s effort but the next-best score was 24 and they could still only post 8 for 195, which proved way short of giving Australia a challenge. A 3-0 series result was nothing less than expected, but Australia’s ruthlessness was impressive.Healy and Rachael Haynes, who backed up her maiden ODI century with 63 to take her tally to 237 runs in the series, cruised towards the target – although both were dropped in the same over off Achini Kulasuriya – before Haynes was out sweeping with 37 runs needed.Healy raced off the blocks in the chase and Australia’s fifty came up in the sixth over. She should have been dismissed on 68 but the chance was spilled at deep midwicket and Haynes was then given a life on 39, but even if held it’s unlikely the result would have differed.Healy’s third ODI hundred, which have all come in the last two years during which time she has averaged 57.15, came with captain Meg Lanning alongside her and a match-winning six was a fitting way for Australia to set their new record, surpassing the 17 wins in a row they managed between 1997 and 1999 under the captaincy of Belinda Clark. For the first time in the series, Sri Lanka were able to set a target and there was a promising foundation at 1 for 68 before Harshitha Madavi was smartly run out by Healy’s direct hit as she ran around from behind the stumps after a badly misjudged single. They slumped to 5 for 87 as Georgia Wareham struck twice, but Atapattu held firm. She added 49 with Ama Kanchana and 47 with Oshadi Ranasinghe, bringing up an impressive hundred off 120 deliveries, to put a seal on a tour where she has been head and shoulders above the rest of Sri Lanka’s batting.

Ange told £15m forward may decide to join Tottenham as reason shared

Tottenham have been told that an in-form forward with eight goals and six assists in his league could decide to join Ange Postecoglou, with Spurs apparently in pole position to sign him as things stand.

The Lilywhites, according to reliable media sources in the past week, are keen to add a new forward as their major signing for the summer window.

Indeed, journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent wrote very recently that Tottenham have their eyes on Pedro Neto and Eberechi Eze as targets in this regard, with other noteworthy reporters like Fabrizio Romano backing interest in the former.

While Postecoglou has an abundance of wingers at his disposal, namely Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min, Manor Solomon, Bryan Gil and Timo Werner, there are concerns the latter won't be able to add a consistent goalscoring threat.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham.

The German was on target for the first time in his Tottenham career against Crystal Palace at the weekend, scoring his only goal for the club so far, but also missed a gaping chance to open the scoring when Sam Johnstone thwarted Werner's attempt to round him.

It is currently unclear whether Tottenham will activate the buy-option in his contract, but the rumours surrounding a new star winger this summer is perhaps an indicator they're weighing alternatives.

Another in-form wide forward to be linked is Hull City star Jaden Philogene.

The Englishman, who's been terrific form for the Tigers this season, boasts 14 Championship goal contributions – and it is believed that Tottenham are current favourites to sign Philogene.

Alan Hutton says Philogene may decide to join Tottenham

Speaking to Aston Villa News, commenting on the 22-year-old's future, former Tottenham defender and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has suggested Philogene may decide to join Spurs – despite Villa holding the advantage of a £15 million buy-back clause.

“Fair play to him, he’s left and gone to Hull and done really well and now other teams are looking and he might feel as though he doesn’t want to go back, he’ll want to move forward in his career and try something else.

“Obviously, Tottenham under Ange have been a breath of fresh air so that might be something that he may feel suits him better than going backwards.”

Jaden Philogene-Bidace

Philogene is rated very highly by those around Hull City, like podcaster Ant Northgraves, who has tipped the young attacker for England one day and believes he is simply "astonishing".

“I think Jaden Philogene definitely has the ability and the confidence to step up to a Premier League team regularly," said Northgraves to Football League World.
