Christian Pulisic and AC Milan's band of ex-Chelsea stars are putting the Blues to shame

San Siro has proven a safe haven for former Blues fleeing the worst-run club in football – and Captain America in particular

In the grand scheme of things, Christian Pulisic’s opener in AC Milan’s predictably facile win over Lecce on Saturday may not have meant much. The Rossoneri have no hope of winning Serie A. Truth be told, with Champions League qualification almost effectively wrapped up, their primary objective at this stage of the domestic season is ensuring that their hated city rivals, Inter, don’t win the league in the derby April 22.

But Pulisic’s goal at the Giuseppe Meazza was nonetheless met by spirited celebrations, by Milan’s players, coaching staff and supporters. Why? Because it was symbolic of his incredible improvement and increased importance as a player since arriving at San Siro last summer. The club’s kit man, Hesham Hassan, even took to social media after the game to point out that the hugely popular Pulisic had once again scored with his ‘weaker’ left foot.

The 25-year-old posted a rapid reply: “Hahaha I always listen!” And who could possibly disagree? After all, Pulisic wouldn’t be enjoying the most satisfying spell of his club career right now if he weren’t such a good listener…

Getty Images'Attitude shone through'

Stefano Pioli has done a lot of video calls with prospective signings over the years. Few have ever gone as well as last summer's chat with Pulisic. He was already aware of the American's attributes as a player but, when they spoke, he "sensed something very positive" about his personality too.

"He didn't talk very much, but it was his attitude that shone through," Pioli explained. "He was very eager, curious, and interested in everything I had to say." Pioli had absolutely no doubts that he was dealing with "an exemplary professional", "a hard worker" that would make Milan "stronger".

The call was also key from Pulisic's perspective. He already knew that he had to leave Chelsea to revive a flagging career; leaving the circus at Stamford Bridge was "a no-brainer". The only question was where to go.

Lyon were interested – and offering Chelsea more money – but Pulisic was drawn to Milan. Firstly, there was the club's incredible history. The Rossoneri may have fallen on hard times during the tail end of – and immediately after – Silvio Berlusconi's reign, but they remain one of the biggest clubs in world football. Pulisic was also enamoured with the idea of playing at San Siro, La Scala del Calcio.

Thirdly, and most importantly of all, some familiar faces were urging the versatile attacker to join them in Milan.

Olivier Giroud started the San Siro sales pitch before the 2022-23 campaign had even concluded. He described his former Chelsea team-mate as a "happy kid, good vibes, always smiling". It was about more than having another good character in the dressing room, though. The French forward wanted to be reunited with a player with whom he had flourished on the field.

"My understanding with him was top, a bit like Eden [Hazard], even if I played less with Christian," Giroud told . "He's that kind of player who is very skilful. He can dribble, play the one-two. He knew how to use me on the pitch and vice versa.

"We had good times together and I hope he can get rid of the injuries, get better and get more consistency and more games, because he's a very, very talented player… I think people here would love [if he came to Milan]. He would help us a lot."

Getty ImagesAgent Tomori

Giroud wasn't the only former Blue trying to convince Pulisic to move to Milan either. As the winger's father, Mark, revealed in an interview with the , Fikayo Tomori also "helped Christian a lot" when it came to making up his mind where to go after Chelsea.

Tomori's enthusiasm was also unsurprising. Unlike Giroud, he hadn't played much alongside Pulisic – the centre-back had spent the majority of his time on Chelsea's books out on loan – but he knew all about the benefits of swapping Stamford Bridge for San Siro.

Tomori remains inexplicably underrated by England manager Gareth Southgate – the fact that Harry Maguire will travel to Germany for this summer's Euros ahead of him is a total farce – but he is hugely admired in Milan.

The defender, who was born in Canada but raised in England by his Nigerian parents, initially arrived on loan in January 2021, but his stay was made permanent just six months later for £25 million ($32m). It proved an absolute bargain, with Tomori earning inclusion in the Serie A Team of the Year after playing a pivotal role in Milan ending their 11-year Scudetto drought in his first full season in Italy.

Getty'He said wonderful things about Milan'

It was inevitable, then, Tomori's transformation not only served as a source of inspiration to Pulisic, but also Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Like Tomori, Loftus-Cheek had come through the youth-team ranks at Chelsea and he had shown serious signs of promise during Maurizio Sarri's spell in charge. However, just like Pulisic, the midfielder's progress was checked by the subsequent – and constant – upheaval at Stamford Bridge, as well as a succession of injuries. Tomori told them both, though, that they could kick-start their careers in Milan.

"When the situation started to evolve, I talked a lot with Fikayo," Loftus-Cheek said. "He said wonderful things about the environment: the team, the city, the fans. Tomori assured me that I'd be at my best in Milan." He wasn't wrong.

Lionel Messi's magic brings the crowds, but evergreen Luis Suarez is Inter Miami's 2024 MVP so far

The Uruguayan has stepped up during his first months in Florida, silencing any doubters in trademark style

Lionel Messi commands the spotlight everywhere he goes and, if you don't understand how or why, you probably haven't followed this sport very closely. Few people in sporting history have been the subject of more attention. No matter what Messi does, the world watches.

Throughout his career, though, Messi has had plenty of sidekicks to help carry that spotlight, and none have been better than Luis Suarez. If Messi was the lead singer of the Barcelona band, Suarez was the drummer behind him, the man smashing the snares and hi-hats with brute force while also ensuring the group's rhythm never fell apart.

Messi has built himself a familiar band in Miami. It features Sergio Busquets, the midfield tone-setter, and Jordi Alba, the dynamic fullback whose solo efforts create some of Messi's best moments of magic. It's Suarez, though, that has been the standout. Yes, even more so than Messi. Even in the twilight of his career, Suarez continues to set the tone, for better or worse.

Generally, Miami has seen the 'better' part of Suarez so far this season. The Uruguayan is leading from the front, picking up the slack during Messi's recent absence. And, because of that, it's Suarez, not Messi, who has emerged as Miami's key player. The Uruguayan icon, therefore, may be the player most likely to determine this team's success or failure by the time all is said and done.

Watch Inter Miami with the MLS Season PassStream nowGettyInitial concerns

When Suarez arrived, there were major doubts, and it was easy to see why. The man himself said his knees were gone. By signing up to play in a league as rough on the body as MLS, the 37-year-old forward was taking a massive, massive risk.

You could understand why he would do it, though, as it was a chance to play with his friends as part of a fun project. Messi and Suarez have been close for years, and so laying alongside him while enjoying everything Miami has to offer? How could he say no?

That's largely the off-field part of this, though. How Suarez fared on the field would dictate how he his Miami career was measured. He shown few signs of slowing down at previous club Gremio, scoring 29 goals in 54 games for the Brazilian outfit. But could he do it in MLS, where turf fields, short turnarounds and long flights were the norm?

In hindsight, it was crazy to doubt him. This was Suarez, after all.

AdvertisementGettyTurning back the clock

Busquets was fighting the good fight back in January. Long before Suarez even stepped on the field for Inter Miami, his longtime Barca teammate was backing him to score boatloads of goals in MLS.

“We're very excited," Busquets said earlier this year. "He's very excited. We know what to expect from him. He has scored goals his entire career. He just won the best player of the Brazilian League, which is very challenging and tough league. He scored many goals, many assists and hopefully he's coming here to continue with that streak.”

Well, Busquets was right. Suarez has already scored many goals, provided a few assists and, most importantly, helped Inter Miami survive without Messi in the matches the Argentine missed.

In just eight MLS games, six of which were starts, Suarez has already scored six goals while providing three assists. That's a goal contribution every 60 minutes or so. As a striker, you'll absolutely take that. You can add two goals and two assists from Miami's CONCACAF Champions Cup run, too, even if that ended prematurely.

Making it all the more impressive is that Suarez has shone in the moments Messi has been gone. He was brought in to be the finisher to Messi's creator, but oftentimes, Suarez has had to do both. He scored three goals in the games Messi missed, helping keep Miami afloat during that stretch.

"We know it's a long season, we have a lot of injuries, but we have a big team and we have a lot of really good players that can replace the others," Suarez said of Messi's absence. "Play continues, if the team stays together and keeps going forward that's the focus."

Miami, of course, are at their best when Messi is involved. Suarez, though, has been just as important this season.

Getty ImagesFiring back at the critics

Oftentimes, footballers say they don't pay attention to the doubters or the critics. And, oftentimes, they're lying. Athletes at that level are acutely aware of what's going on around them, even if they say they aren't. Suarez, though, isn't shy about saying it. No, he's glad to be proving his doubters wrong.

“From an individual standpoint, I am happy to be able to help the team," he said after scoring in a 5-0 rout of Orlando City in March. "A striker and professional soccer player has to be accustomed to living with daily criticism. People in soccer do not have memory, so in that sense I am very used to it. I have been playing professional soccer for almost 20 years, so I do not worry about things that people might be saying.”

Suarez's new teammate Julian Gressel says that Suarez has used the criticism as fire, helping him rediscover his old self rather early in the season.

“It was perfect because look at him now," Gressel said. "He’s getting more comfortable. I think it's something that you can't just write off, in a sense, where you can't just be coming into a new team and a new club, a new city for the family, everything. It takes a little bit of time and that happened for him, that happened for me, those things just are just normal.

"And for him to be called out a little bit, I think helped him to kind of get that edge where now he's clinical and he's the Suarez we’ve known, so he can come in and change the game like he did for us.”

That edge has certainly shown itself. There have been plenty of moments that have felt like vintage Suarez, the good and the bad.

GettySame old Suarez

If you thought Suarez would mellow out a bit as he aged, think again. No, the Suarez that has arrived in Miami comes with the same fervor and chaos as the one that dazzled in Liverpool and Barcelona. He may know how to walk the line a little bit better but, boy, does he walk it.

It's what makes Suarez one of the most polarizing players of a generation, if not the sport's history. Where he goes, controversy follows. Some see Suarez as a player with an unmatched will to win, no matter the cost. Others see him as an unsportsmanlike figure who will be remembered as much for the controversies he created as the goals he scored.

Thus far, there have been no real controversies, but there have been a few close calls. Suarez remains as physical as ever, and as irritable, too. Opponents and referees have felt his wrath. Monterrey's Victor Guzman was lucky not to have his arm broken by Suarez as the clock ticked away on Inter Miami's CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign. Officials have heard plenty from the Uruguayan, too, dating all the way back to his debut against Al-Hilal during preseason.

He's only earned two yellow cards this season, surprisingly enough, but Miami will take whatever tradeoff comes from Suarez finding that side of himself. When in that kind of mood, Saurez has always been unplayable, and it's clear that he cares enough to discover it during his time in Miami.

'I was buying meat for a braai' – How Anrich Nortje scorched his way to an IPL deal

South Africa’s little-known IPL pick has built a big reputation with his exploits in the Mzansi League

Liam Brickhill21-Dec-2018There were a couple of familiar names in the South African contingent of the IPL auction in December: Colin Ingram is an increasingly sought-after T20 freelancer, while Heinrich Klaasen is also no stranger to the IPL, and Hardus Viljoen is a County regular. But not as many will have heard of the fourth South African picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders earlier this week.Anrich Nortje, a 25-year-old fast bowler from Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape, turned enough heads in three Mzansi Super League games to pop up on the IPL radar. Playing for the Cape Town Blitz, Nortje caught the attention of KKR coach Jacques Kallis, himself a Cape Town local, scoring a INR 20 lakh (R400,000) contract, despite currently being sidelined by minor surgery on his ankle.”I didn’t really expect to get picked up, but I thought, well, definitely give it a shot. When I get on the shortlist I was quite happy. I was in Struisbaai, [a picturesque coastal town of a few thousand people] in the Western Cape, just in a shopping centre when someone phoned me and I heard,” Nortje explained. “I was busy getting meat for a braai that night.”While he has been a cricketer – and bowled fast – since childhood, Nortje’s recent rise has been rapid. Having made his first class debut in 2013, and his franchise debut in 2016, in the 2017-18 season he averaged a modest 35 with the ball in the four-day domestic competition for Warriors but, he says, he “changed one or two things during the winter, and just sort of clicked”.Nortje was selected for South Africa A’s tour of India in August, playing in two matches and dismissing Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari – for 148 – in the second unofficial Test against India A. The tour meant Nortje went into the 2018-19 domestic season match-fit and bowling with rhythm, and in five first class games for Warriors he picked up 24 wickets at 21.04, including figures of 5 for 51 and 6 for 66 in back-to-back games against Knights.”It started with getting selected for SA A, and then just bowling straight through the winter. I had a lot of cricket, a lot of prep, a lot of bowling. It’s been very busy and very exciting. Getting selected for the MSL was also a great thing. It got people looking my way a little bit. It would have been nice to play a little more, but it was still a great opportunity.”Even before the Mzansi Super League kicked off, word of Nortje’s pace started to get around. “Just watching Nortje bowling, he bowled at the speed of lightning, that was pretty scary,” said Dawid Malan after one of the warm-ups. While those games obviously weren’t televised, it was reported that Nortje touched 150km/h. “He’s got raw pace,” his team-mate Dale Steyn summed it up, simply. Blitz coach Ashwell Prince went as far as saying: “I have no doubt he will go on to play successfully at Test match level.””I was also a little bit surprised to see the speeds,” admitted Nortje. “I did change one or two things and I could feel it’s a little bit quicker, and there’s a little bit more power at the crease. But to see the pace was nice.”

I was just in a shopping centre when someone phoned me and I heard. I was busy getting meat for a braai that night

“I definitely think there was one four-day game at Centurion, that I could definitely feel it was quicker. Quicker than what I bowled at MSL. But that was just one spell that I bowled. This season, compared to previous seasons, has definitely been the quickest.”In that Centurion game, Nortje collected the wickets of Aiden Markram and Farhaan Behardien on his way to 4 for 67. He knocked over big names in the MSL as well, dismissing Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma (first ball) on his way to 4 for 32 against Durban Heat, and then cut through Jozi Stars with 3 for 30. While he was just doing what he had been doing domestically all season, this was televised. The exposure clearly helped.”Without that [Mzansi], I wouldn’t have been picked up. It was my first big T20 tournament, I’d like to get more exposure from here on, and IPL would definitely help that.”Nortje credited the various coaches and trainers who have helped to shape his career thus far, including age-group coach Andre du Plessis, provincial coach Piet Botha, his Warriors fitness trainer and Warriors coach Rivash Gobind, who “sort of just freed us up, the whole team. Those guys really had an influence on me getting to where I am at this stage”.While Nortje’s MSL adventure was cut short by bone fragments in his left ankle that required surgery and put him out of cricket until the new year, with an IPL contract and plenty of buzz around him, he’s actually in a pretty good place right now.”I’m just excited to be playing [in the IPL]. If I can get a game, that would probably be the most exciting thing for me. It doesn’t really bother me who I’m bowling to or whatever. I just want to play and just do my thing.”Playing for the Proteas is an obvious goal for Nortje, but even before that he will have a chance to bowl at some of the best players in the world at the IPL. Including, perhaps, the greatest of them all.”Bowling to Virat? Wow, I don’t know,” he laughs. “He’s an unbelievable player. I’ll have to assess it on the day, assess the wicket, and just go according to the plan of what the coach and the team wants.””I’d definitely like to play for the Proteas. I’d play any time, any format, it doesn’t matter what it is. I just want to get into the green and gold and play for South Africa.”

Rangers have chance to sign "great player" who has starred alongside Salah

Rangers are believed to be one of numerous clubs in the mix to sign an experienced defender who has starred at a high level in both club and international football, according to a fresh transfer update.

Rangers' January transfer business

The Gers have suffered an unpredictable season to date, starting with a disappointing spell under Michael Beale, who was eventually dismissed after a string of below-par performances and results. Philippe Clement arrived at Ibrox in the Englishman's place, and while the positives have outweighed the negatives with him so far, improvements are still required, as highlighted by the 1-1 draws against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership and Aris on Thursday evening.

Some new signings in January will clearly help in that respect, aiding Rangers' title push up against Celtic in the process, and they have been linked with numerous players in recent weeks. Ben Godfrey and Lennon Miller are two players who have been backed to move to Ibrox, with the pair currently representing Everton and Motherwell respectively, and former Sunderland youngster Mason Cotcher is another who could head there.

While Rangers' finances are likely to determine how much business can be done next month, it would be a surprise, and a disappointment, if no new faces came in to boost the options at Clement's disposal in the second half of the season.

Rangers offered chance to sign Hegazi

According to a fresh transfer update from TEAMtalk, Rangers have been given the opportunity to sign Ahmed Hegazi in January, although that also applies to a number of other clubs.

"Hegazi could be allowed to leave on a free transfer, and a number of clubs in the UK are keeping a close eye on the situation. TEAMtalk understands that Burnley, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough and Cardiff are amongst those looking at the situation.

"Both Rangers and Celtic have also been offered the chance to the sign the Egyptian international. The centre-back’s current contract at Al Ittihad runs until 2026 but he has been left out of their Saudi Pro League squad and can’t feature for the side before the end of the year."

Hegazi could be an intriguing signing by Rangers in January, with the 32-year-old not necessarily representing the future, but someone with huge experience who could make a difference at the back for Clement.

The Gers transfer target has won an impressive 82 caps for Egypt, including starring at the 2018 World Cup alongside Mohamed Salah. In the Premier League, he has appeared 68 times during his spell with West Brom, while former Tottenham midfielder and ex-Baggies teammate Nacer Chadli heaped praise on Hegazi, saying:

"Ahmed is a great player. He is very strong in the air, and he has good skills. He is intelligent and can be very dangerous and can score goals."

Bringing in a player who has performed at a high level for such a long time could be shrewd business by Rangers, and the fact that he can't play for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad for the remainder of the year could only heighten the chance of him moving to Ibrox.

There is clearly plenty of potential interest in him, however, and a return to English football could appeal, but Clement would be wise to chance his arm and bring in the Egyptian veteran.

West Ham have already enquired about "pacy" January target from PL rivals

West Ham United have gone from relegation contenders to Europa Conference League champions and a side comfortably sitting in mid-table all in the space of a year. And this is all whilst losing star man Declan Rice during the summer window. David Moyes' side have so far enjoyed an impressive campaign despite some inconistent performances, having qualified out of their Europa League group and risen to ninth in the Premier League.

They won't want to just simply sit back and rest on their laurels now that they're back to their best, however. Instead, reports suggest that they've already turned their attention towards one particular January target.

West Ham transfer news

Those at the London Stadium spent the Rice money incredibly well during the summer transfer window. James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus have continued to impress throughout the current campaign to make their former golden boy's exit somewhat of an afterthought. If West Ham can qualify for European football once again, meanwhile, then Rice's exit may even be looked back on as a blessing in disguise.

The Hammers will reportedly look to repeat their transfer genius in January to land even more upgrades. According to Rudy Galetti, West Ham are considering an attempt to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea in January and have already asked their London rivals for information about their left-back.

Maatsen's current Chelsea deal is due to run out in the summer of 2025, meaning that the Blues have just over a year to cash in before facing the risk of losing the reported West Ham target on a free deal.

"Pacy" Maatsen needs minutes

Maatsen's stats expose just how desperately he needs a move during the January transfer window. The young Dutchman is yet to start a single Premier League game and has played just 106 minutes – the same as just over one full game. Even when Ben Chilwell has been unavailable, it has been Marc Cucurella who has been given the role, perhaps leaving Maatsen to wonder what more he has to do to break into Mauricio Pochettino's side.

West Ham could offer the full-back the minutes he so desperately needs though. Maatsen would be left competing with former Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri, but would also have the chance to feature in Europe – something that Chelsea cannot currently offer.

At his best, Maatsen has been at the centre of praise, including from Burnley boss Vincent Kompany upon the start of his loan move at the Clarets last season. Kompany told the club's official website: “We’re pleased to add Ian to our team, he’s a talented, energetic and pacy player, who can defend and get forward well. Ian will be a great addition to our team on and off the pitch.”

Top four fighting 'fire with fire' cost Bangladesh – Neil McKenzie

The Bangladesh batting consultant blamed the ‘overconfidence’ of Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan, all of whom got out pulling the short ball

Mohammad Isam in Sylhet17-Dec-2018Both sides went full tilt with aggression, but it was West Indies who came out on top against Bangladesh in Sylhet. Player of the match Sheldon Cottrell, whose four-wicket haul set up West Indies’ eight-wicket win in the first T20I, said that they tried to be aggressive with every ball. Bangladesh’s batting consultant Neil McKenzie said that the batsmen shouldn’t have tried to fight “fire with fire” against their bowling, rather just use that pace to score runs.”I don’t think we learned quick enough,” McKenzie said. “There was extra pace with Cottrell and Thomas opening the innings. We knew they were going to hit the deck hard. Shakib [Al Hasan] showed that we could have used the pace a little bit more. I think we just tried to be too aggressive, trying to hit the ball in front of square when we could have used the pace.”If you look at those three dismissals, you have Liton Das coming down the track at a guy bowling 140kph. It takes a lot of guts, heart and belief in yourself. Tamim [Iqbal] has been in great form. He is trying to hit it way in front of square. Soumya [Sarkar] also tried to do the same thing. I just think that it is just the nature of the game that you try to match aggression with aggression. I am not worried about the way they played the short ball. I think it was overconfidence, trying to fight fire with fire. Sometimes you have to deflect more than attack.”McKenzie said that rather than trying to meet the short balls early, as Tamim, Liton, Soumya and Shakib did, they should have played it slightly later, and place it past the square-leg umpire. All four got caught trying to pull the ball.”Looking to stay on top of the ball, trying to hit it the square-leg umpire and behind, using the pace, was a better shot on that surface. There was extra bounce in that wicket,” he said.McKenzie said that they needed another batsman, preferably in the top order, to get a score similar to Shakib’s 61 off 43 balls, for Bangladesh to have a bigger total than 129. “It wasn’t our day. We have to come up with solid individual game plans. We have to ensure that the individual guy make that huge contribution.”Shakib batted well for his 60-odd. We pride on our top three getting a 60 or 70. It would have taken us a reasonable score to defend,” he said.

Chelsea could finally replace Antonio Rudiger by making £25m January move

On Wednesday night, Chelsea conceded an xG of 4.07 against Manchester United which was the second-highest xG a team have managed in a Premier League game this season, second only to the Blues' 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur back in November.

However, Spurs had ten men for little over a half-hour and ended the match with nine players. Meanwhile, Chelsea had their full eleven out at Old Trafford in midweek as United peppered 28 shots at Robert Sanchez. The 2-1 scoreline potentially flattered the visitors.

The London outfit looked wide open at the back and Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly in the market for a new centre-back to rectify his team's defensive woes this winter.

Chelsea transfer news – Jonathan Tah

According to BILD reporter Christian Falk, Chelsea are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jonathan Tah this season, having been excellent for Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, with the German outfit rushing to the top of the Bundesliga.

The journalist is claiming that the Blues are eyeing up the Germany international as a replacement for veteran Thiago Silva.

Falk also reports that the 27-year-old centre-half has a release clause in his contract, although Leverkusen's sporting director Simon Rolfes revealed during the summer that Tah's £17m buyout clause had expired, allowing the side to negotiate their own asking price. The CIES Football Observatory has valued Tah at £25m which isn't too far off his original release clause.

Silva has been a tremendous servant for the Blues, having joined the club three-and-a-half years ago at the ripe age of 35. Former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter even admitted that the Brazilian's football brain is "above everybody" else.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, a few months before his 40th birthday, Chelsea need to start looking at replacements and Tah could be the perfect choice.

Jonathan Tah's stats this season

During his early days with Leverkusen, former teammate Christoph Kramer described the centre-back as a "defensive battleship", but it is actually his stats in possession of the ball that make the German stand out. Tah is ranking very highly when compared to all other central defenders from Europe's top-five leagues this term in a host of possession-based metrics.

What would also make Tah a useful addition to Chelsea's squad is that, like Silva, he has played predominantly as the central centre-back in a three-man defensive line in and out of possession for Leverkusen under head coach Xabi Alonso. The Blues used the 3-4-2-1 system to great success under Thomas Tuchel during the team's run to European glory two years ago.

The idea from Tuchel was for the three centre-backs and two central midfielders to play short passes between themselves to entice the opposition's midfield to press, leaving gaps in behind. One player who was integral to the side's success under the current Bayern Munich boss was Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger became a Chelsea player in 2017 for £29m during Antonio Conte's spell in charge and operated as both the middle centre-back and left-sided central defender. His displays at Stamford Bridge led Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand to call him "immense".

Real Madrid's Antonio Rudiger

The former Roma star left Chelsea in 2022 on a free transfer but the Blues never quite replaced the sheer quality Rudiger brought to the backline.

Nevertheless, Tah could finally be the man to replace Rudiger and Silva and is statistically outperforming the duo in a number of defensive areas this term.

Leverkusen are cruising at the top of the Bundesliga so perhaps Tah may not want to leave for a club who are going through somewhat of a crisis on the pitch at the moment. However, Chelsea would be getting a tremendous defender, should they manage to secure his services, and a player who would instantly improve their backline.
