Tottenham plotting to replace Son Heung-min with "ambitious" £45m forward

Tottenham Hotspur insiders have made the club’s feelings known about out-of-form star Son Heung-min behind-the-scenes, and it is believed Ange Postecoglou’s side could turn to a £45 million star as a long-term replacement.

Son Heung-min criticised for recent form at Tottenham

The Lilywhites secured their captain’s future for another campaign by activating the one-year extension clause in his contract, as it was previously set to expire at the end of this Premier League campaign.

Son was a key player for Postecoglou last season – bagging 17 goals and 10 assists in all competitions as Tottenham finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League – but the South Korean’s form has dwindled in recent months.

During what was a torrid time for Tottenham in terms of player availability, and a period where Postecoglou needed the very best from his big-name star, Son managed just one goal and an assist in the top flight from late December to now – with the forward attracting some criticism as a result.

“I’ve been taking so much stick from South Korea fans. I’ve been getting loads of stick 24/7 on my Instagram because I said Son’s not a captain, not a leader, and we have to start looking at a replacement for him,” said pundit Jamie O’Hara on talkSPORT (via Tottenham News).

“He has been an unbelievable servant to the football club, and he’s a top player. He’s been world-class, but he isn’t anymore. He has lost a yard of pace. He doesn’t go past anyone. He doesn’t really make anything happen.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

“Sometimes age gets the better of you, and you’ve got to start looking elsewhere. I think we’ve got to find someone else. I don’t think Son should be captain anymore. He shouldn’t be captain for Tottenham.”

Reports suggest that Tottenham have made contact with Antonio Cordero’s representatives ahead of a potential free summer transfer (The Boot Room), with the Malaga winger seemingly among Spurs’ candidates to succeed Son in the coming years. However, Postecoglou’s side could also look for solutions internally.

What Tottenham are feeling about Son with Mathys Tel tipped to replace him

According to a report by GiveMeSport this week, Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel, who Spurs have an option to buy permanently for around £45 million, could be Son’s long-term heir in north London.

The news outlet states that Tottenham are increasingly concerned about Son’s form, and the versatile Tel, who can play both out wide and as a striker, is seen as someone who can step into the South Korea international star’s shoes.

Tel has already agreed terms on a six-year Spurs contract, for if the club decide to trigger his buy-option and the Frenchman ultimately decides he wants to stay at N17 indefinitely.

The 19-year-old scored his first goal for Spurs in an FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa, and has shown flashes of brilliance since deciding to take up Postecoglou’s offer to join the club.

He could be an adept successor for Son, and GMS report that, when Dominic Solanke returns to the fold, there is a real possibility Tottenham’s legendary winger could be dropped to the bench.

“He is very ambitious,” said Postecoglou on Tel. “He has a great self-belief and confidence. He feels he can reach the top of the game and he has chosen us which is great vindication of what we are doing.”

A lot of people have devoted their lives to make this happen – Porterfield

The Ireland captain chose the eve of their maiden Test match to reflect on the efforts of everyone who had worked towards this moment

Adam Collins10-May-2018A moment in time that 11 players will never forget, but on behalf of the so many more that came before them who never had the chance. That is the message from Ireland captain William Porterfield ahead of his country’s first ever men’s Test Match beginning on Friday.Winning a Test cap at 33 years of age would usually be a story in itself, but in the XI that will turn out at Malahide on Friday, Porterfield is one of a handful of anything-but-green players who will be debuting. Instead, he used his pre-Test media conference to deflect the attention away from his charges.”It would be remiss if we didn’t talk about everything that has gone before,” he said as the finishing touches were being put on the Dublin ground. “Every cricketer who has played for Ireland. On and off the pitch, administrators, a lot of people have devoted a lot of their lives to make this happen, culminating with us being lucky enough at the time of our careers.”After what promises to be the game’s longest cap presentation, the veteran captain is under no illusion about the nervous energy that comes with this new territory and the attention that will follow. “I am sure there will be a lot of different emotions that will flow through everyone over the next 24 hours but excitement is the main one.”It’s obviously been a long journey but in some ways a pretty quick journey as well. In my career personally, we have gone from not having ODI status to having ODI status and everything else, then now tomorrow going out there and playing the first Test match for Ireland. So yes, it has been a long banging of the drum and it is going to be a pretty special occasion.”There is an acceptance from Porterfield that the white-ball formats are more important to the progress of Irish cricket, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of having the chance to turn out in the whites.Where Full-Member status will have the biggest effect, Porterfield believes, is delivering a pipeline of international top-flight fixtures that administrators can plan for years into the future, especially the financial opportunities it opens up to invest to grow the game and bolster Ireland’s fledgling domestic first-class competition.”This week is all about Test cricket but the financial aspect that opens up with being a Full Member allows us to grow the game within Ireland and make it more sustainable and allows us to get more fixtures,” he continued. “That is probably the biggest thing it brings from Cricket Ireland’s point of view and Test cricket comes along with that and we are fortunate.”Turning to the task ahead, Porterfield lamented about a side strain that will prevent 22-year old Nathan Smith from making his debut. “You’ve gotta feel for the lad, probably going from the best moment in his career to the worst in the space of 48 hours.” Craig Young, a 28-year old with 28 international starts to his name, has been called up as the replacement, but Porterfield stopped short of naming his side. That will come at the toss. The composition of the seam attack is all-important for the hosts, with Porterfield nominating lateral movement as vital if they are to knock off the more fancied visitors. He hopes the weather forecast might help as well: “It might be at best in double figures. So, all those little factors only add to giving us a better chance of winning.”With Ireland’s modest international record of late, expectations of them stunning Pakistan are suitably measured. “But we’ve as much chance as anyone,” Porterfield said. “If we do the basics right, in our own conditions we will give ourselves a very good chance. There is a lot of experience in our line-up, exciting youth as well. So don’t see any reason why not.”

Shocked Langer says Australia 'can't have had a worse day'

He also went on to liken England’s top order to Australia’s all-conquering top three of Hayden, Gilchrist and Ponting

Melinda Farrell at Trent Bridge20-Jun-20181:37

Australia’s new ODI low

Justin Langer described Australia’s record loss to England as “brutal” and “a shock” and said his players could not have had a worse day as they slumped to a third straight loss, handing the five-match ODI series to England.A year out from the World Cup, Australia are ranked sixth, their lowest ranking since 1984, and the 242-run thumping at Trent Bridge was a harsh reality check for the reigning champions.”It’s a shock,” said Langer after the game at Trent Bridge. “That is literally England at its best. It’s no fluke that they are No.1 in the world.”I’ve never seen nothing like that today. I was in Johannesburg when Australia got 400 [434 for 4] and South Africa then got it, but that was just brutal. Hopefully our young guys can learn from it. It doesn’t get harder than that.”None of Australia’s bowlers – and Tim Paine used eight in total – escaped the caning handed out by England’s top order, although Ashton Agar conceded a comparably ‘frugal’ seven runs per over. Andrew Tye suffered the worst punishment, his nine wicketless overs going for 100 runs.”He’s probably one of the best people I have ever met in the game of cricket,” said Langer. “He’ll stay up but what I’ve said to him, like our batters, he’s got to learn how to bowl at the first 10 overs, the second 10 overs, and at the death.”After a match where England scored 481, smashing the previous highest total by 37 runs, Langer compared England’s batting line-up to the Australian side that won the 2003 and 2007 World Cups, led by Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting.”I’ve got massive respect for England and the way they are playing their cricket,” said Langer. “Their top three are brutal. The way they are playing is reminiscent of how we used to play in our day with Gilly, Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting at the top.”They have the England Test captain Joe Root batting at four and Eoin Morgan, England’s highest ever one-day scorer coming in at five, Jos Buttler who is as dynamic as anyone at the moment and Moeen Ali who is beating us with the bat and the ball – well maybe not so much the ball, but he gives them some depth. It’s a pretty sad dressing room there because you expect to win.”In his first series as national coach, a job handed to him in the wake of an enormous upheaval that has shaken Australia on and off the field, Langer says his first job is to help the team rebuild.”I’ve known what the task is before this game, it’s to build a team and to get better,” said Langer. “One thing I will say is that I have been impressed by their camaraderie and preparation. I mean they are young and we recognise that.”What I do know is that you can work hard to gain at confidence. It’s a bit like working hard to gain respect. To do that we are going to have to go through some tough days like this.”With the series lost, the remaining two games give Australia the chance to experiment further. Langer indicated he may look to bring Nathan Lyon into the side and consider playing Alex Carey as a specialist batsman. Australia have yet to bat out their 50 overs in the series so far, and while they will regain significant strike power with the return of Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, their top six looks far from settled, in terms of personnel and batting order.”We’ve got to bat against the top and against spin,” said Langer. “We need to have more rounded players. In 20-overs cricket you can get away with it as it’s more condensed, but in 50 overs you have a lot more time in the game than you think.”For us to get bowled out in the 37th over on the best batting track in the world – there were huge missed opportunities there for some of our batters.”Can’t have had a worse day.”But for Langer, the immediate challenge is to take a group of young men, clearly hurting and low on confidence after such a massive defeat, pick them up, dust them off and send them out again at Chester-le-Street for the fourth ODI.”I have to look after them all,” said Langer. “These are the days when you are like a dad, not a headmaster. We’ll look after them. It was a tough day but we’ll keep chipping away at it tomorrow.”

Sunderland: Mowbray must finally unleash his "exciting" 5 ft 11 maestro

Tony Mowbray's Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light this evening as they take on Watford in the Championship in search of back-to-back wins.

The Black Cats head into this match off the back of a comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday away from home last time out, a game in which they had bounced back from a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City.

What's the latest Sunderland team news?

Mowbray has confirmed that Bradley Dack and Pierre Ekwah will remain unavailable for selection as they recover from their respective injury issues. They are both expected to step up their recoveries, alongside left-back Dennis Cirkin, during the upcoming international break.

Aji Alese and Eliezer Mayenda are also back in training on the grass but there is no current timeline on their potential returns to first-team action.

The Sunderland head coach could look to make some changes to his XI for tonight's game with the aim of avoiding further injury issues as his side play three times within the space of a week.

After their win over Sheffield Wednesday, the Black Cats now face Watford before a local clash with Middlesbrough in the early kick-off on Saturday.

With this in mind, Mowbray must finally unleash central midfielder Adil Aouchiche from the start against the Hornets in place of the experienced Alex Pritchard.

Will Adil Aouchiche start against Watford?

30-year-old Pritchard, who missed nine matches throughout the 2022/23 campaign, has been rotated in and out of the XI so far this season, with three starts and six substitute appearances in the Championship.

Sunderland's Tony Mowbray and Alex Pritchard.

He has been carefully managed and that is why the ex-Blackburn Rovers tactician must rest him for this match in order to keep him fresh for the clash with Boro on Saturday.

This will then open the door for Mowbray to start Aouchiche, who came off the bench to replace Pritchard during the win at Hillsborough, for the first time since his move from Lorient during the summer window.

The 21-year-old has made four appearances off the bench for the Black Cats since his switch to the Stadium of Light and tonight could be an opportunity for him to make his full debut.

Pritchard has registered zero goals and two assists in 432 minutes of league football so far this season, whilst Aouchiche has recorded one assist in 80 minutes of Championship game time and scored once in 70 minutes of U21 football for the Sunderland academy.

Former Lorient midfielder Adil Aouchiche.

The French talent, who was described as an "exciting" player by journalist Josh Bunting, previously showcased his creative qualities at Ligue 1 level during the 2020/21 campaign for Saint-Etienne.

Aourchiche scored two goals and created an eye-catching 12 'big chances' in 34 appearances in the French top flight that season as a teenager.

This suggests that the potential is there for him to be an excellent stand-in for Pritchard, who created 11 'big chances' for his teammates in 40 Championship outings last season.

The former Lorient ace has already showcased his eye for a pass with an assist against QPR and his statistics with Saint-Etienne indicate that Mowbray could unearth an outstanding creative threat to rival Pritchard if he can get the youngster back to his best.

Hopefully, a start tonight against Watford can provide the 5 foot 11 gem with an opportunity to showcase the best of his abilities in possession.

Southampton: Martin could unearth Walcott 2.0 in 17 y/o Staplewood talent

Southampton have a rich history of producing and developing exciting young talents through their academy system over the years at Staplewood.

The likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, James Ward-Prowse, Luke Shaw, and Alan Shearer are just a few of the many talented gems to have been nurtured on the south coast.

Current first-team head coach Russell Martin is now tasked with bringing through the next wonderkid through the youth set-up and has given opportunities to the likes of Will Smallbone and Samuel Edozie this season.

Southampton's most valuable former academy players

The Saints currently have an exciting crop of U21 players who could make a first-team breakthrough in the future and one of them is 17-year-old ace Tyler Dibling, who the Scottish boss could develop into the next Walcott at St. Mary's.

How old was Walcott when he made his Southampton debut?

A record was broken when the English forward became the youngster player in the club's history at the age of 16 years and 143 days against Wolves in 2005.

Walcott went on to score five goals in 23 first-team matches for the club in all competitions throughout the 2005/06 campaign and that led to a transfer to Arsenal at the end of the season.

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

The former England international then racked up 108 goals and 80 assists in 397 outings for the Gunners before a spell with Everton, which then led to his return to the Saints in 2020 before his retirement earlier this year.

How many goals has Dibling scored for Southampton?

Dibling, who spent two months at Chelsea before returning to the Saints earlier this year, has scored 18 goals at U21 and U18 level combined for the Saints.

The 17-year-old gem, who was once hailed as one of the club's "shining" youth prospects by ex-boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, made his first-team bow against Gillingham in the EFL Cup earlier this season.

This suggests that Martin has seen potential in the teenage ace and believes that the quality is there for him to contribute at senior level, albeit in a cameo at this stage in his career.

Dibling's impressive form at U21 level so far this term indicates that the scope is there for him to develop into an exciting attacking option for the club if he can translate his performances to the first-team.

Southampton forward Tyler Dibling.

The England U18 international, who predominantly plays out wide on the right, has racked up three goals and two assists in six Premier League 2 appearances.

There is no guarantee that Dibling will be able to score and assist goals at a similar rate for Martin's team but there was no guarantee that Walcott would do the same when he made his emergence in 2005.

Southampton's manager may have to be bold and unleash the 17-year-old wizard at Championship level over the coming weeks and months to see if he is ready to make the step up.

If Dibling can rise to that challenge then he could emerge as Walcott 2.0 for the Saints as another goalscoring right winger from the academy making an impact as a teenager.

Chelsea consider Nico Williams moveAthletic Club star may cost £43mQuestion marks over Sterling & Mudryk futuresGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

According to The Telegraph, the 21-year-old has a release clause of approximately £43 million ($54.6m) but it is believed the winger earns upwards of £100,000-a-week after tax in Spain – which would make him one of the Blues' top earners.

While Chelsea arguably need an out-and-out striker, with Napoli's Victor Osimhen and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko among their top targets, Williams has impressed the west London outfit following his six goals and 11 assists this season. However, if he did sign for the Blues, this could place question marks around the futures of fellow widemen Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk. Moreover, with profit and sustainability rules, Chelsea may have to sell before they can buy this summer.

Williams – who has a contract with Athletic Club until 2027 – has made 11 appearances for Spain, scoring two goals in the process. Arsenal are reportedly among the list of admirers for the youngster, who has been at Bilbao since 2013.

The Red Dragons have, on the back of capturing the National League crown in record-breaking style last season, positioned themselves among the fourth tier frontrunners in 2023-24. With just nine games left to take in, Phil Parkinson’s side sit second in the table – two points adrift of leaders Mansfield and just three ahead of MK Dons in fifth.

AdvertisementWHAT WRIGHT SAID

Former Red Dragons star Akil Wright, who is now targeting a top-three finish with Stockport, has said of a thrilling race past the post: “It is brilliant. That is what you play football for, to be part of something like this. We are getting to the best part of the season now and every game is important. From the top to MK Dons, the gap is so small and the pressure is on everybody. We were top of the league for so long and now we are chasing for the top spot. But it has been exciting these last few months and I can’t really see anybody running away with it as such. I just looking forward to the challenge. You just want to make sure you do your part first and win games, and then look at the other results and hopefully other teams do us favours.”

Wright, who took in close to 100 appearances for Wrexham after initially joining them on loan in 2017, added on seeing the Red Dragons flying high: “At the start of the season I thought Wrexham would be up there fighting for promotion. Obviously a lot has changed since I was at the club but even though they are a rival now, it is good to see the club on the up and doing well for themselves. I have been lucky to play for Wrexham and Stockport, two big clubs. I am enjoying where I am now and hopefully I can be part of success this season.”

Man United: Ten Hag must drop "dreadful" dud who flopped vs Sheffield United

Erik ten Hag will be hoping that Manchester United's last two matches hint at an extended turnaround in form to come.

The Red Devils beat both Brentford and Sheffield United 2-1 recently in the Premier League to stop a run of losses, but they still find themselves in a disappointing 8th position.

One of those losses came in the second Champions League group stage match for ten Hag's men, Galatasaray mounting a terrific comeback on the night at Old Trafford to win 3-2 courtesy of a late Mauro Icardi strike.

Manchester United manager EriktenHag

It makes their task to get out of the group stages ever more difficult, also falling victim to a defeat in their first match of the Champions League campaign to Bayern Munich – Man United on the wrong end of a 4-3 scoreline, an action-packed match in Munich with the Red Devils heading back to England with nothing to show for their troubles.

Therefore, it is paramount that the Red Devils put the confidence gained from recent wins in the league into their performances on Europe's biggest stage versus Kobenhavn.

Winning this one could give ten Hag's team the upper hand over their Danish opponents, who only have a singular point next to their name currently.

Tough decisions in terms of selection will have to be made therefore, but one decision should be straightforward for the Dutch manager with Antony.

He lost possession 14 times and failed to create a single chance at Bramall Lane last time out, which could have cost his side if his teammates had not produced the goods.

How has Antony played for Man United this season?

Antony has not set the world alight in a Man United strip this season or at all since joining the club from Ajax last year, the showboating Brazilian has yet to contribute to a goal this campaign with zero goals and assists to his name.

In total, he has an underwhelming eight goals for the Red Devils from 51 appearances with a subpar three assists also tallied up.

Antony

It has led to many calling out and questioning Antony's performances, the £82m winger labelled as "dreadful" by chief sports writer for the Manchester Evening News Samuel Luckhurst at the height of the many falling outs experienced in the Red Devils camp.

His overall Sofascore rating for the Red Devils from the last 12 months suggests that Antony has not blossomed into the skillful, high-octane winger Man United wanted after purchasing him from the Eredivisie, coming in at an average 6.89 rating and failing to excite the expectant masses.

Who could replace Antony?

Ten Hag could well look to Alejandro Garnarcho to replace Antony for this Champions League tie, the Argentine winger substituted on for the 23-year-old versus Sheffield United and went on to make an instant impact despite only playing for 26 minutes.

He would come away with an admirable 7.1 Sofascore rating, helping his side off the bench.

The 19-year-old winger was on the pitch when Diego Dalot's screamer hit the back of the net, the right-back sparing Ten Hag's blushes to give the Red Devils a narrow win versus the Blades, who remain rooted to the bottom of the league.

Alejandro Garnacho

The young winger – who scored three times last season in the Premier League – could be unleashed versus Kobenhavn as an ace up Ten Hag's sleeve.

Garnacho has only played 31 minutes of Champions League football in those two Man United defeats, but with Antony failing to impress, the youthfulness of Man United's highly thought of prospect could work against Copenhagen to start the game on the front foot and hopefully result in their first victory of Group A.
