England star Mary Earps more important than ever to Lionesses as Ellie Roebuck and Hannah Hampton’s struggles create goalkeeper chaos

With shot-stoppers on the benches of Man City and Chelsea, Sarina Wiegman and the reigning European champions have a problem

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has had a few selection issues to deal with in her incredibly successful two-year tenure. At the European Championships in 2022, she guided the Lionesses to glory despite playing a striker in defence. At the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Dutchwoman’s decision to change formation mid-tournament helped her team reach the final for the first time. Now, as England’s next cycle comes around, there is another issue brewing.

Six months ago, Wiegman couldn’t have envisaged a problem in the goalkeeping department. Three of the five shot-stoppers she'd called up in the past year were first-choice at club level, and the other two were seeing a decent amount of action in regularly rotated roles. But, at this moment, only one of those remains the undisputed No.1 at their club and one has even switched allegiances to another national team.

Fortunately for England, that No.1 is also their No.1 and, in Mary Earps, it’s also one of the best goalkeepers on the planet. Football is unpredictable, though, and should the Manchester United shot-stopper suffer a drop-off in form, pick up a suspension or something worse, there’s no obvious replacement primed and ready to pick up the baton.

Earps has been one of the Lionesses’ key players for a while now, such has been her incredible form since Wiegman took over. But as the October international break approaches, with the team in need of good results after defeat in their second UEFA Women’s Nations League group-stage game against the Netherlands, there might not be anyone more important to this England side right now.

GettyOptions dwindle

Why do England find themselves in this situation? Well, each individual has seen their own set of circumstances change.

Hannah Hampton, part of the Euros and World Cup squads, opted to leave Aston Villa to join Chelsea this summer, a transfer which puzzled many because of the large goalkeeper group the Blues already had. Ann-Katrin Berger and Zecira Musovic had been sharing duties in between the sticks, while Belgium’s Nicky Evrard was already set to join ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Adding Hampton meant adding a fourth senior international shot-stopper and, so far, she is the only one yet to see action this campaign, with Berger and Musovic again splitting the starting role while Evrard gets minutes on loan at Brighton.

Meanwhile, the rise of teenager Khiara Keating saw another two of England’s options, in Ellie Roebuck and Sandy MacIver, usurped at Manchester City, the 19-year-old starting all of the club’s league games this season.

MacIver, who featured ahead of Roebuck in City’s only cup fixture so far, has also now switched allegiances to represent Scotland, having won just one cap in four years of Lionesses call-ups.

With Everton boss Brian Sorensen opting to rotate between England prospect Emily Ramsey and Ireland star Courtney Brosnan in his line-ups, it leaves Earps as the only first-choice goalkeeper of the five Wiegman has called up in the past 12 months.

AdvertisementGetty Images‘A little bit complicated’

For the games with Belgium in October, Wiegman has picked four goalkeepers: Earps, Roebuck, Hampton and Keating. It is a first senior call-up for the latter, one of two uncapped players set to be involved this month along with Grace Clinton, the Manchester United midfielder on loan at Tottenham.

She praised the form of both youngsters, telling reporters: “I think they showed good performances and what I want to see from them is how they come into camps, how they relate to the other players in the squad and what they can do.”

When asked about the problems with the goalkeepers and their game time, though, the coach admitted that it is “a little bit complicated”.

“We want players to play because when they play, we can see them and their performances make us pick them,” she said. “[Roebuck and Hampton] have built a little bit of credit with us because they have been with our team for a long period of time and done well in training sessions, shown up all the time.

“I think they still are among the best goalkeepers in the country and I just hope in the future they do get minutes. That makes it a little bit complicated, but I did pick them because I still think they are the best in the country.”

GettyWill things change?

The big question is, will they get those minutes in the future? Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, for example, is noted for how she gives players time to settle, and though one might associate that more with outfield players because of their increased involvement in a new style of play, it appears that is what she is doing with Hampton, too.

“Where the game is going, goalkeepers have to be almost extra outfield players,” she said on podcast shortly after Hampton’s arrival at the club. “The ability with her feet is second-to-none and I think, with an infectious playing style, is the future. I think she’s got a lot of work to do to get there, but she knows that. She understands that and she’s certainly looking forward to the challenge of competing.” How much time will it take for her to be closer to a starting role, though? It’s impossible to predict.

In Manchester, meanwhile, City head coach Gareth Taylor seems relatively happy with the impact Keating has had on his team in goal. The 19-year-old has kept three clean sheets in four games and taken to increased minutes in the WSL like a duck to water.

Given the form she is in, it’s tough to see her losing her place any time soon. That said, Taylor hasn’t been afraid to rotate that position during his tenure and the door is certainly open for Roebuck to reclaim her spot.

“We've got three good goalkeepers and they all bring different things,” Taylor said earlier this month. “The competition for places is really high. We've been working with Sandy and Khiara quite a bit in pre-season because we had them for a little bit longer. Obviously, Ellie was away with England. It's about trying to get players up to speed as much as we possibly can, but each one of those three are really well thought of and really valued by us.”

GettyA teenager on the rise

Keating’s form has been one of the stories of this early part of the season, the teenager asserting herself in Man City’s starting line-up after making eight sporadic appearances since earning her debut at the age of 17.

It was her performance against Chelsea in a huge clash of title contenders earlier this month that really caught the eye. To be trusted in such a fixture was one thing, but the way she justified her selection was exemplary. Her distribution, her confidence in collecting crosses and the saves she made almost secured nine-player City a victory against all odds.

“She was great. She's very, very good to work with,” Taylor said after the game. “She makes saves, she comes for crosses, she's got safe hands, she's good with her distribution – both short and long. She was top today and you know when you go down to nine players that the goalkeeper is going to be busy. She was quick off the line and slowed the game down when she needed to.

“She's young so she's going to make some mistakes, some errors, and can get a bit excited at times, but she's great to work with and I thought her performance was brilliant.”

Keating’s emergence as a genuine contender for City’s No.1 spot might not be great news for Roebuck in terms of her own minutes, but it brings a very promising talent into the England picture, and to gain experience around the senior team while still so young will do wonders for her development.

Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney told he 'hasn't earned' Birmingham City job with Tom Brady & Co making a 'mistake' ditching John Eustace for a 'marquee name'

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has insisted that Wayne Rooney didn't "earn" his job as Birmingham City head coach.

Pennant slammed Brady for appointing RooneySays he hasn't earned Birmingham jobLost four out of first five matches in chargeWHAT HAPPENED?

Pennant has questioned Birmingham co-owner and NFL legend Tom Brady for firing John Eustace, who was dismissed in October despite guiding the club to sixth position in the Championship.

Since replacing Eustace in mid-October, Rooney has managed the club in five Championship matches, losing four and drawing once. The Blues are now languishing in the bottom half of the table, eight points above the relegation zone.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pennant went on to claim that the former Manchester United striker has not "earned the right" to manage a club of Birmingham's stature and advised Brady not to treat English club football as an American sport.

Recently, former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair warned the former NFL star against following the same path as the Glazer family, who have been extremely unpopular since taking over at Manchester United. Instead, Sinclair advised him to follow the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney model that has served Wrexham so well on the lower leagues.

WHAT PENNANT SAID

Speaking to , former Birmingham star Pennant said: "It's sad to see what's happening at Birmingham. John Eustace will be sitting there with a cigar and a cup of tea at home. Birmingham were sitting pretty in sixth, but they're now 18th and eight points off relegation. That's a catastrophe and a massive blunder. There was no reason to look at Wayne Rooney or any other manager considering what they did last season. I know it's early days, but it doesn't look as if it's going anywhere. Wayne Rooney hasn't earned the right to be given a job like this, but I thought the American owners saw him as a marquee name. They need to understand it doesn't work like that. It's not American football or basketball, it's English football, and you need a manager who knows how to win games."

He went on to insist that Brady and the rest of the boardroom officials at Birmingham should take responsibility for weakening the team. "It was definitely a mistake to sack Eustace. You can see why the fans are so upset," Pennant added. "They've taken the team from sixth to 18th in a space of a month – it’s barmy! The owners should be admitting the mistakes they've made and not talking about their visions for the future. They're almost fighting relegation. Getting into the Premier League is the vision – it's a really weird one. Birmingham fans must be seething to watch this. It's not only the results, it's the performances. They were hard to beat before, but now they're losing comfortably. A lot of the plight has to be down to Rooney and his staff. The club were sixth before and they were getting results under Eustace with the same players. Rooney took over a good team, and now they're 18th. Either the tactics, formation, and selections aren't working, and you have to look at that. Whatever the staff are doing is not working."

‘England’s next superstar!’ – Meet Grace Clinton, the Lionesses’ breakthrough talent impressing Sarina Wiegman & earning Ella Toone comparisons

The 20-year-old is thriving on loan at Spurs from Manchester United and she is the talk of the town after marking her international debut with a goal

It took Robert Vilahamn, the Tottenham boss, just one competitive match to believe that Grace Clinton could be England’s next “superstar”. His comments might have seemed bold at the time but, after the 20-year-old’s incredible start to her Lionesses career this past week, they have aged like a fine wine.

Granted her senior international debut by Sarina Wiegman last Friday, Clinton made an already memorable day even more so when she marked it with her first goal for the Lionesses. Four days later, Wiegman gave her another opportunity and she grasped it just as firmly, shining in a different midfield role as England thrashed Italy.

Perhaps it is because she is playing for a mid-table Women’s Super League side, on loan at Spurs from Manchester United, that her performances this season have gone under the radar. But Wiegman has certainly noticed and her trust in the youngster has thrust her into the spotlight almost overnight.

For those who have been aware of the hype simmering around Clinton for the last few years, the events of this past week might not have been a huge surprise. But for many more, it has been an introduction to a player who, in Vilahamn’s words, will be England’s next No.10.

GettyPromising talent

Born in Liverpool, Clinton was first spotted by then-Everton boss Andy Spence when she was just 10 years old. However, despite being offered a trial for the club’s regional talent centre, she continued to play for her school and Old Xavs, the boys' team that her father helped to set up. "He wanted me to carry on playing in the boys’ team in grassroots football because they were stronger than me," Clinton explained in a column for in October.

A few years later, though, she took up the invitation and it was through Everton’s youth set-up that she would continue to progress, sitting on the fringes of the first-team from around the age of 17 before putting pen-to-paper on a professional contract a few months later.

“She is an enormous talent and has come on leaps and bounds this season,” Willie Kirk, Everton’s head coach at the time, said when the news was announced. “Technically, she is fantastic and her tactical knowledge is already at a good level. She has improved her physical conditioning and professionalism and if this improvement continues, who knows how good she can be. She has got the right character to get to the top.”

AdvertisementGettyStruggling to break through

But despite the belief in her talent from Kirk, Clinton struggled to break into Everton’s first-team on a consistent basis, with him citing the competition in midfield as one reason at the time.

“She was a great kid first of all but she was a little bit frustrating because she was a little bit lazy out of possession," he said in an interview with in October. "I remember, it was in my last game at Everton, she scored a fantastic goal against Manchester City. It was a top, top goal and everyone was talking about it saying, 'That's why she should be playing more'. But everyone forgot she didn't track back for [Caroline] Weir's goal which put us 1-0 down. She was righting her wrongs!”

With her still so young and still needing to refine areas of her game, a summer switch from Everton to Manchester United in 2022 raised a few eyebrows as it hardly felt like there was an easier path to the first-team there. With an injury to the midfielder also playing a part, head coach Marc Skinner took some time to decide the best course of action for her development and, in January of last year, sent Clinton on loan to Bristol City in the Championship.

Shining as a starter

That switch was the start of a really impressive and exciting 12 months or so for Clinton. Marking her debut at Bristol with a late goal that helped her new team come from 2-1 down to win 3-2 in stoppage time, head coach Lauren Smith didn’t hold back with her praise for the then-19-year-old in her post-match interview. “She's got something special,” she said.

Scoring six goals and registering one assist in 10 Championship starts, Clinton helped Bristol win promotion to the WSL during her four-month stint and it was clear that she was ready to make that step up, whether with the Robins, Man Utd or someone else. In the end, it was the latter, with Spurs securing her services for the 2023-24 season, and it did not take her long to show the top-flight what she was all about.

GettyUp another level

Spurs had a tough opening fixture in this WSL season, travelling to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, the reigning champions. But in the end, the north London side were unlucky to make the short trip home empty-handed after a particularly impressive second-half display, in which Clinton was one of their stand-out individuals. The 20-year-old was only denied a wonder-goal by an excellent Zecira Musovic stop and it was her saved shot that led to Martha Thomas pulling one back in an eventual 2-1 defeat.

“She’s only 20 years old and she was so dominant in this game,” Spurs boss Vilahamn said afterwards. “She will be the next superstar in this country if you ask me. I think she’s brilliant and has the potential to be so good.”

It was a case of Clinton setting the tone for her time with the club because she has only got better since that opening weekend. No one in the WSL has completed more dribbles than the youngster, who has been thriving in a wider role, racking up four goals and two assists in 13 appearances for a team that sits bang in the middle of the table, in sixth place.

It's a different position for Clinton, who has played in the holding midfield, box-to-box, No.10 and No.9 roles throughout her young career. But Vilahamn has got good results with his strategy so far, even if he believes her future will be in a different area of the pitch.

“She’s a No.10, absolutely. In the future, she’s going to start as a No.10 in the national team, I’m quite sure of that,” he said earlier this season, making a prediction that would come true only a few months later. “Sometimes when you’re young and you want to be on the ball, and you don’t want to lose it in the risky moments, taking a step out to the left like she’s doing now is a good way because then she can go into the space with the ball, instead of starting in the space. Then she’s also finding her way into that pocket and taking a shot. For me, she will be a No.10, but right now, she’s doing a good job for me as a left-winger, so she will probably end up in both positions.”

Conte must stick with killer Kulu v Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to build on their derby day triumph in midweek as they welcome Burnley to north London for today’s lunchtime kickoff in the Premier League.

After thrashing arch-rivals Arsenal 3-0 on Thursday night, Antonio Conte’s side moved to within one point of a place in the top four but the Clarets, who also need a win to bolster their survival chances in what is surely a huge game at either end of the table.

The Italian head coach is left with plenty to ponder in terms of team selection and he could well be tempted to remain unchanged – some of his in-game decisions against the Gunners certainly suggested that as both Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski were withdrawn prematurely.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

And the latter is an interesting dilemma, having already been dropped from the starting XI once in recent weeks, despite a red-hot start to life in the English captial.

Since his move from Juventus in January, the Sweden international has delivered three goals and eight assists across 18 appearances, including two assists from the bench against Leicester City, where he was initially amongst the substitutes for nearly an hour.

Conte may have felt he was in need of a rest but it does show that he’s not completely undroppable, with both Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn as alternative options.

Tired or not, Kulusevski must start against the Lancashire outfit today.

The £31.5m-rated winger, described as “explosive” by former Aston Villa man Marcus Allback, has all the attributes to destroy a struggling team like Burnley.

As per FBRef, Kulusevski ranks amongst the top 2% of all his positional peers across Europe’s ‘big five’ divisions for assists per 90 (0.46), amongst the top 4% for pressures (23.96 per 90) and amongst the top 6% for interceptions (1.69 per 90).

It’s no wonder he has quickly cemented himself as first-choice under Conte as he clearly defends from the front, often forcing the opposition into a mistake or handing the possession back to Spurs.

Elsewhere, the Juve loanee is third to only Son and Harry Kane for shots (1.4 per game) and second to the South Korean for key chances created (1.4 per game), via WhoScored.

The Clarets are expected to be without their first-choice central defensive pairing of Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, so Kulusevski could quite easily wreak havoc at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon.

Said to be in “ridiculous” form by football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, the persistence with the Swedish machine out wide could seriously bolster the Whites’ top-four chances.

He must be unleashed once more today.

AND in other news, Conte demands Spurs to sign £25m-rated “revelation”, he’s miles better than Emerson…

Spurs: Interest increasing in Reguilon

Interest in Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon is increasing ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), who claim that Barcelona are targeting the signing of a new left-sided defender at the end of the current campaign, and that the 25-year-old Spurs full-back is one of the players on Xavi’s list of potential targets.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report goes on to state that, while the Catalan side are looking for a relatively cheap option in the position, they could look to include a player of their own in an approach to Spurs for the Spain international, while it is also suggested that Reguilon’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has a good relationship with the LaLiga side – something that could help to facilitate a switch.

Paratici must axe Reguilon

Following his £32m move to Tottenham back in September of 2020, the argument that Reguilon has not lived up to this rather hefty price tag is a relatively easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 27 Premier League appearances during his debut campaign in north London, the £25.2m-rated left-back offered very little going forwards, scoring no goals, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of just 0.6 key passes, taking 0.7 shots and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the 25-year-old average a disappointing SofaScore match rating of a mere 6.74, ranking him as Spurs’ tenth-worst performer in the English top flight.

It has been a similar case over the Spaniard’s 25 league fixtures this season, with the £68k-per-week full-back scoring two goals, registering three assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.2 key passes, 0.8 shots and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player who Gary Neville claimed is “nowhere near good enough” for Antonio Conte’s system average a SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Tottenham’s 12th-worst player in the Premier League in the current campaign.

Indeed, while these returns are far from disastrous for a typical full-back, with Conte deploying a system that utilises wing-backs, much more is expected going forwards from the players who operate in these positions – something that the Italian has reportedly stated as one of the main arguments for Tottenham moving Reguilon on this summer.

As such, considering all of the above, it would indeed appear a very wise move for Fabio Paratici to cash in on the defender while the interest is there, as it would very much seem as if Reguilon and Conte are far from a match made in heaven.
